The last of the King Crimson influenced albums.......2007-07-22

The World became the World (1974) is the English language version of the album L'Isola di niente, with the addition of a re-worked version of Impressione di Settembre (which was originally included on Storia di un Minuto (1972) and an instrumental track (Have Your Cake and Beat It). Is my Face on Straight was also presented in English on the original album. Shades of 1969-1970 period King Crimson are present, which is also a good thing in my book. Just like the remarkable Photos of Ghosts (1973), the King Crimson link is further stressed by the association with lyricist Pete Sinfield. This would be last of the proggy PFM albums that wore the King Crimson influences on their sleeve however. Starting with the excellent, yet transitional Chocolate Kings (1976), PFM would move into the realm of jazz rock (especially on Jet Lag, 1977), then progressive pop with Passpartu (1978).

The lineup on The World became the World showed some slight changes from the classic lineup on Photos of Ghosts and included Flavio Premoli (synthesizers, piano, Hammond organ, mellotron, and vocals); Franz Di Cioccio (drums and vocals); new bassist Ian Patrick Djivas (Gibson "ripper" bass guitar and vocals); the incredible Franco Mussida (electric and acoustic guitars, vocals); and Mauro Pagani (violin, flute, and vocals). All of the band members are sensational musicians and the individual playing and intricate ensemble work is breathtaking. The vocals are in English with a heavy accent - I do not find it the least bit distracting although some folks may have problems with it. The new bassist is phenomenal and his playing on the instrumental track Have your Cake and Beat It is simply jaw-dropping.

The six tracks on The World Became the World range in length from 4'00" to 10'44". In general, the music is soft and contemplative, yet also includes the at times overwhelming ensemble virtuosity and stunning musicianship that characterizes PFM and makes them one of the finest bands to emerge out of the Italian prog scene. The Mountain is a wonderful track that opens with a very interesting-sounding and lengthy choir section. At 10'44 it is the longest piece on the album. The instrumental workout Have your Cake and Beat It juxtaposes mind-numbingly complex ensemble work with a very stately closing section played on churchy sounding Hammond organ. This sharp transitioning between sections that are extremely different in texture and dynamics was characteristic of the 1972-1974 period, and is in place on this album. There are some soft acoustic pieces (Just Look Away) and haunting sections that feature heavy mellotron use scattered throughout the album. Overall, this is some incredible music. I do have a few problems with some of Pete Sinfield's lyrics though, but then again, his over the top lyrics add to the charm of this album.

This is a remarkable PFM album that finds them at a creative peak. As such, it is very highly recommended along with the debut Storia di un Minuto (1972); Photos of Ghosts (1973); and Chocolate Kings (1976). Absolutely wonderful stuff from beginning to end that should be considered an integral part of the progressive rock collection.

Worthy Successor to Photos of Ghosts.......2006-08-29

With this second major English-language release, PFM takes greater risks than with its predecessor Photos of Ghosts (1973). But if The World Became The World is arguably somewhat uneven by comparison, its strengths are breathtaking. The irrepressible energy of these musicians--quite evident in their live performances--infuses this bravura 1974 effort, and the heavy mellotron-backed chorus of the title track and the anthemic closing figure of the final cut are welcome examples of traditional progressive conventions.

But above all, PFM's Italian ethos is apparent in the arpeggiation of synthesizer and violin in "Four Holes in the Ground" and the whimsical tempo shifts of "Is My Face On Straight." In particular, "The Mountain" leads off with a lengthy sequence of block chords by a massed choir that is answered with a burst of instrumentation and a forceful lead vocal from Franco Mussida before segueing into a delicate Neapolitan mandoline fadeout. (Interestingly, the lyric to this ten-minute tone poem and the disc's cover art recall the synthesized eruption that closes "River of Life" on Photos of Ghosts; the presence of Vesuvius seems to haunt the band's compositions.)

With the eventual release of the live PFM Cook in 1975, the band's modest reputation in the US would be consolidated and, for all intents and purposes, brought to a flamboyant but lamentable end.

English remake of L'Isola di Niente.......2003-08-27

PFM is an Italian band that had very limited English skills. Their first three albums were in Italian. This is an English remake of PFM's third album, L'Isola di Niente. It has an added track and the cover background color was changed from green to blue. The original LP cover had a cut out in the center and the island mountain was printed on the inner sleeve.

PFM is sort of mellow in the studio. In concert, they are a jamming band. Their live albums are fantastic. Seek out Live in the USA (also called Cook), the boxset 10 Anni Live, or the recent Live In Japan.

There is a French band, called Mona Lisa, that is very similar to PFM in structure and sound. But like almost all things French, it is inferior to the Italian.

this is a magnificent album specialy trac no. 1 if you love italian prog. and dont have it buy it it's a must. now if you want pfm best album consider chocolat king it is much more aggresive.

Bassist Patrick Djivas had just joined the band, and joined with drummer Franz Di Cioccio to give it a more propulsive sound than on "Photos of Ghosts". The band's music, arrangements, and production were at an all-time high, resulting in classics like "Four Holes in the Ground", with its complex yet hummable melody leading to a blazing unison passage the Dixie Dregs would envy, and the title song, a ballad with a memorable synthesizer instrumental as its chorus. (The title cut is an English version of "Impressioni di Settembre" from the earlier "Storia di un Minuto" album, and is not available on the Italian version of the album, "L'Isola di Niente".) A flute processed through a wah-wah pedal leads into the stunning final chorus of "Is My Face on Straight?", one of prog-rock's greatest moments. Do the Supersuckers have what it takes to back up their rather ballsy claim that they are world's best rock & roll band? Depends how you take your rock. If you're looking for introspective lyrics, sweeping guitar artistry, original arrangements, and topnotch production values, keep your REMs, Smashing Pumpkins and Radioheads to yourself. But if you're a whiskey-fueled, tattooed, Satan-worshiping, cowboy-hat-wearing hellion, then the Supersuckers are your kings and this is the greatest album of all time. These are 27 prime cuts from the 'Suckers catalog, from the prescient "Coattail Rider" to such classics as "How to Maximize Your Kill Count," "She's My Bitch," "Ron's Got the Cocaine," and a cover of Willie Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" (complete with Willie contributing voice and a blistering acoustic guitar lead). So the question still remains: Are the Supersuckers the greatest rock & roll band in the world? Think you'd find Willie on a Radiohead album? Hell no. We can only pray that someday America will awaken from its cultural slumber and realize that the Supersuckers and Rocket From the Crypt were two of the best yet criminally underrated rock bands of the 1990s (and early 00s). Both brought punk back to its rock 'n' roll roots with tongue firmly lodged in cheek, and in an era shoe-gazing whiny emo rockers they put on a damn good live show. The Supersuckers' Sacrlicious Sounds Of .. . and their "country" album, Must've Been High, are classics waiting to be rediscovered, so go out and get them now so you can lie to all your lame-ass hipster friends and tell them you were way into the Supersuckers way back when. Or get this one, which includes most of the best songs from those two albums plus their earlier punk stuff and the ironic genius of their cover of "Dead Homiez."

Shout bamalama.......2003-04-01

Lugging an obnoxiously long declaration for a title "How the Supersuckers Became the Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" is a compilation of some of the Supersuckers' finest moments. The term "finest moments" may lack any objective relevance though. The Supersuckers excel at a sort of tongue-in-cheek bamalama, a hammering hybrid of garage punk and Motorhead metal, that can quite easily make it hard to distinguish one sonic assault from another. The exceptions, predictably, are the standouts. Versions of Ice Cube's "Dead Homiez" and Willie Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" drastically change the sonic palate. Steve Earle joins the band for a version of "Before They Make Me Run" that cuts the Stones to shreds. The tracks off their "country" album ("Must've Been High") also help break up the one dimensional rockin'. But overall, if it's high octane, no-frills rawk you're seeking, you could do far worse.

Not a big fan of greatest hits - would have liked an all-out live album more, there is really no excuse for not having each album individually. A supersuckers greatest hits is really rather redundant, they've been great for years. I saw em live a while back though, and it does look like they could use the extra money.
