Do not waste your time and money on this one. Not even worth hanging from your rear-view mirror. The first ablum shook my world, this one shook my faith in Otten

5 out of 5 stars Joyful Album!!!!!!.......2004-01-11

I am so thrilled that Thomas Otten made Portraits as I find his voice mesmerizing. After reading some negative reviews I had my doubts about his new release and was unsure after sampling some of the songs on Amazon. Later I visited Thomas Otten's web site (The English site is still under development but the French site is ready and you don't have to speak French to download.) where I was able to download 80 sec clips of ALL of the songs on his new album. From that point on I was hooked and returned to Amazon to place my order. About "Portraits", no, it doesn't sound like "Close to Silence" and thank goodness. If it did he could have just made the previous album a 2 cd set and been done with it. I love the new feelings that this album evokes in me. I feel transported to some open fields perhaps in Spain on a warm sunny day. There were a couple of songs that did not strike a chord with me right away as they were unexpected styles, but just like new foods one has to sample them 3 times to either develop a taste for it or truly learn that you don't like it. After several plays I was able to appreciate these new forays and applaud Thomas for taking chances. Had I not taken a chance I would never have been able to grow musically. On top of this are some beautiful songs ("Voices", "Feel Low") that just send me straight to Heaven. There are NO guarantees in life, take a chance!!!

1 out of 5 stars I don't rate this cd because it doesn't deserve a rate.......2003-10-01

I awaited a long time for the release of the Thomas Otten second cd. The first cd is a wonderfull cd, it is a work like no one I have ever heard before.
This second work is a totally mess, a waist of time.
I wonder if it was written, composed and sung by the same people of the first one.
Don't buy it if you liked Close To Silence.
Don't buy it at all!

1 out of 5 stars So-o-o-o-o Disappointed.......2003-08-14

After being brought to my knees,(literally) by Thomas Otten's first album, Close to Silence, I could barely wait until his next release. I found Portraits to be extremely disappointing. I felt much of his vocals on this release were forced and I kept getting the feeling throughout the CD that this was rushed to press. I don't feel this CD came from the same place/space as his first. Hopefully his future endeavors will be able to "capture" the message I clearly heard/felt in his first.

5 out of 5 stars "Otten's vocal style is mesmerizing, overwhelming & amazing".......2003-05-27

Higher Octave takes the reins as we journey through the catacombs of Opera, High/Mass Chants and blends of New Age thus we have "Portraits", featuring Thomas Otten who is so overwhelming that the hair on the back of your neck will stand on end. I'm a purist when it comes to some music and this certainly fits the bill ~ his amazing voice takes on another realm of music categories, that even the most educated individual in this field would be stymied.

The entire album is priceless (all eleven tracks), his delivery is impeccable and right on the money. Looking forward to future projects from this one-of-kind artists ~ he hits every note without looking back ~ that is the sign of a well-trained singer/performer. Hats off to Higher Octave for releasing this album and to our favorite vocalist ~ THOMAS OTTEN!

4 out of 5 stars Unique approach of expected heaviness versus unexpected elements.......2006-03-22

The Good
"Cancer of the Industry" starts off with pounding drums and Eastern influenced wind instruments. It doesn't take long before the calm turns into a thunderstorm of driving riffs and furious vocals. "Monkey Tail" focuses more on mellow structures with woodwind instrumentation and subtle guitar. Yakuza may paint a peaceful scene at first, but in the fevering final minutes, they really drive it home. "Dishonor" comes at you with mighty riffs, blood-thirsty vocals, and devastating drum work from start to finish.

Thoughts of being lost in a dark, scary jungle is what will ring through you brain when you hear "20 Bucks." The vocals are haunting and echoed when they're not filled with rage and intensity. The nine minute epic "Back to the Mountain" is bay far the best track on the album. Not only is it true to the hardcore form, but the Eastern influence adds texture and grander appeal to the track.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Samsara is defined by its unique blend of progressive elements and kick ass metal. The group's unique approach of expected heaviness versus unexpected elements is quite refreshing.

For his post-Zippers debut, former Squirrel Nut frontman Tom Maxwell shows great skill at mixing musical languages. For starters, he opens with a sona solo (that's a Chinese reed instrument, natch). Then he kicks in with a pair of horn-heavy rave-ups--"Sixes and Sevens to Me" and "The Uptown Stomp." What stands out in the swing department is Maxwell's more cabaret-touched approach, less about Setzerian flash and more about energetic detail and drama. Just as a sona solo opens the album, so too two other Buddhist numbers appear: "Some Born Singing" and the title track, both sung by Holly Harding Baddour. She has a voice that peaks and wavers on these Asian-tinged numbers and then swaggers on "If I Had You," a sultry cabaret swinger. Maxwell moves in other directions, too: "Flame in My Heart" is a George Jones tune, faithfully rendered, "Three Fire Blues" is Maxwell as a solo guitar bluesman, and "You Always Get What's Coming" has the leader duetting with Tom Loncaric on pipe organ. Samsara's an ambitious outing, as big in scope maybe as are Maxwell's spiritual notions. This is also an immense creative success. --Andrew Bartlett

I want to keep this short. I bought SNZ's Bedlam Ballroom not knowing there were changes in the group, when I discovered the missing element was Tom Maxwell I bought this cd as well. This is the one I still listen to a year later. PLEASE GIVE US MORE TOM!

5 out of 5 stars Record of the year for me!.......2001-08-02

Leaving to do his own thing I think opened him up in some way to make music I wish folks still made more of. I have friends that find there own favorite songs, but feeling satisfied with a lot of lot. First, there was never any sousaphone playing on any Zippers album that I remember, which was a beautiful old, classic touch. Then, you wish you had a lot more time to find all these influences that come out in his music (like Waller). His blues and country song are genuine, his addition of amazing Holly Harding is tremendous, the singing quartet does two completely original songs great and he seems to have a way that critics never seem smart or educated enough to come off intelligently in their "reviews." If you just love music, this is the album. You can hear his missing presence (and Ken Mosher's) in the new Zippers and you can see its soul re-figuring itself and rebirthing here with Maxwell's visionary and roots respecting music. If I had more room I'd say more (like you couldn't tell). Amen to him and what he does.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and diverse CD!!!.......2001-06-12

Samsara under the leadership of previous band member Tom Maxwell of the group Squirrel Nut Zippers has lots of elements that one can expect from genres of jazz such as New Orleans Jazz and Classical Jazz. According to my opinion this CD can even beat any SNZ album. I like SNZ very much and thanks to SNZ as I have had come to know Tom Maxwell and other gifted musician of today like Andrew Bird, Katharine Whalen, Kevin O'Donnel etc. when I have collected my first SNZ CD a few years back.

This CD has also introduced me to the melodious voice of Holly Harding Baddour. The pieces If "You Had Me" and "Samsara" shows that she is equally competent to any female jazz vocalist. Tom Maxwell is a musical genius and there is no doubt about that. He can play not only lots of instruments, but also can sing with sheer confidence. His vocal in "The Uptown Stomp", "Don't Give Me Runaround", "No Body Likes Me" just proves that. His solo gitar "Three Fires Blues" is one of the best solo gitar blues that I have heard. This CD is for mature music lover, but it can also be a great introduction for novice who wants to taste the great jazz music of the old days. This CD is extremely diverse. Flame in My Heart sounds like country music and Some Born Singing by Holly Harding Baddour reminds me as if I am listening to Radio Peking. It is very Chinese indeed.

I thank every musician who has contributed to this album, especially my cordial thanks again goes to the producer of this CD Mr. Mike Napolitano who previously have produced some of the most brilliant albums that I have ever listened and he is still keeping that promise. As a jazz enthusiast, I consider this CD to be a gem in my collection. If I had the opportunity, than I could give this CD six stars. Buy this CD NOW and I promise you will never regret for that.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best .......2007-06-27

I think Samsara is one of the best film ever made. In my opinion, a good movie is one that teach you something, helps your human beeing in evolution, helps you THINKING! And Samsara have a lot of teachings! It is not only about buddhism, it is about life, about the choices we have to make, and more than that, about the way we deal with the effects of our choices. It is always about the big choice : the hard way or the easy way, buth sometimes, it is difficult to know what is good or what is bad for your beeing. Are you strong enough to choose the hard way? No? Than find a way to get stronger, because if you dont do that, samsara (the cycle of reincarnations)is waiting for you!
And the hole movie is fully completed with the original music from Tibet. Most of the music made by a bulgarian born in Paris (:-)) ), played by a bulgarian orchestra, but it is tibetan music! So, if you saw the movie, you will want to have this original soundtrack, and if you buy the music, you will want to buy the movie too. Buy both, there is no price for what you will feel!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely score that works well apart from the film.......2007-05-05

Like the film for which it is written, French composer Cyril Morin's score to Samsara is delicate and beautiful, a subtle aural companion to a story of love and the search for truth. It was Morin's first score for a major feature film, the one that took his career to the next stage after many years composing for European television. Coincidentally, Morin wrote his first score for short film, 1991's Khajuraho, for Indian director Pan Nalin, who 10 years later commissioned the score for Samsara, which was also Nalin's first directorial feature.

Together the two crafted something quite amazing, a Buddhist love story about a monk named Tashi, who leaves the order for Pema, a village girl with whom he settles down to raise a family, only to discover years later that perhaps he should have stayed in the monastery. Titled after the Buddhist word for the world in which we live, the world of the physical and the sensual, Samsara is the story of how we all struggle for enlightenment.

Filmed in India's northeastern Buddhist region of Ladak, the score features many of the sounds and instruments native to that region, including chanting, Tibetan bowls, bansuri, duduk, ney, and Mongolian and Tibetan violins woven into and accentuating the orchestral work, performed here by the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. Morin's Samsara is one of those unique soundtracks that could exist on its own quite apart from the film for which it was written, a lovely score that rewards close listening, or which can be played unobtrusively in the background.

dont just pass this off as an electronic or techno album with a world feel, no theirs something different, every song has the lusciousness of a real band that actually listens and can flow all over and constantelly challenge new rythems not just in the album but to everysong piece by pierce. almost every song features Alan Kushan on the indian santuri box (like dulcimer), and fumio playing i thing all bass. Electric and acoustic guitar, tablas, vocals, flutes, and electronic beats fill the sound pool. Im framilliar with shehab and im sure he and eraldo bernocchi are responsible for some of the beats, some are straight electro some have a sampledtribal drum to make the actual kit, and some are electro samples. Maybe those other sounds are some of shehabs samples from his taptop. i hear faint acordian harmonium to complete the persian egyptian feel. Product Description

Telefuzz presents its second full-length album, 'The Financiers of Samsara'. This collection of songs represents the most complete fusion of Don Verbrilli's influences to date. It is also a significant progression along the paths of both production and songwriting. The songs meld together cohesively as an album, but each piece in isolation also offers something unique and memorable. Released on Vancouver's Upstairs Recordings label, the album continues the label's efforts at providing lasting, quality music for thoughtful listeners. It is sincerely hoped that you enjoy the album - its varied rhythms and textures, and rich environments.

One of my favorite albums to listen to on my ipod while relaxing or working. Also love "Sleep", their other CD.
