I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!

Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.

Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05

I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.

Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. Fabulous!.......2002-07-05

I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.

I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.

This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

Ball of Design is a record full of anger and hope. Much darker, more epic, and undoubtedly more political than their last album, 1:3:1, Ball of Design features a more focused Dufus—both figuratively and literally. Dufus has gone from fifteen members to a fit five: Strictly Beats on drums, Rick on guitar, Marko on bass, Lucas Crane phd on analog arts (probably the best tape deck-ist in the universe) and mastermind Seth Faergolzia on vocals and guitar. This is hippie death metal that is changing the world.

On Ball of Design, Dufus choose to eschew some of their more wacky leanings—no jocks carrying dildos or more girl cops. Nope, this time you, the listener, are asked to forget all you think you know, about music, about your life, to "set aside your idiot for a minute" and pay attention to a great rock record.

Spirited jamming rock for open minds.......2005-03-26

Powerful ideas meld with street-level jamming. Big and chaotic, but still coherent and tribal-intimate. In other words, a fine balance of elements. The epic "Freedom" takes awhile to get off the ground before wielding and sustaining that power, but I take that as a metaphor for the title subject.

Seth Faergolzia is in the lead for this band of brothers, musical rainbow warriors lifting the discourse about what is worth fighting for.

All players bring a powerful presense to the noisiness = This is not randomly-made sound. Choices are made as they open up the performances and themselves to exciting possibilities beyond the performers' control. Sometimes what's beyond their control may at first seem to some ears as noise, but they limit -- or control, if you will -- the amount of what is beyond their control.

To sum up "Ball of Design": Universal themes are given unique expression. The album is like a fine home-brewed spirit that is all the more amazing for not having been mellowed for the larger marketplace.

I'd liken Dufus to what Polyphonic Spree would sound like if they were making a bloody, balls-out and ultimately beautiful racket.

Enhancing the musical experience, be prepared to encounter oddly-spelled words among the lyrics provided: If they were just misspelled, I'd be screaming bloody murder, but they're so persistent they provide a side stained window into Seth Faergolzia's mind. More insight at dufus.tv. And something I almost never experience, I fell in love with the inscrutable cartoons peppered in the album graphics.

For the Love of Art and the Making is the third Beyond Twilight album written, produced, and recorded by mastermind Finn Zierler and Jacob Hansen (with some help by Tommy Hansen). The lineup is the same except that Zierler's chosen a new singer for the album (the first two discs had different vocalists as well). Bjorn Jansson from Tears of Anger is the new singer who you will undoubtedly compare to previous guys Jorn Lande and Kelly Sundown Carpenter, especially during the heavier parts where he opts for some serious throaty vocals that sound amazing.

That said, the vocals are no where near as out front as on the previous releases this time around. On the contrary, they are slightly behind Zierler's dazzling keyboard work and Tomas Freden's pummeling drums. This, however, is definitely a conscious effort on both Zierler and Hansen's parts, as the vocal mix has a deep purpose to it. My understanding is that Zierler wanted to keep the vocals as just part of the songs, rather than the songs themselves, and therefore wrote some of the pieces emphasizing his diverse keyboard and piano sections (by far his most diverse to date) and left more space for heavy guitar runs. Yes, this album is a lot heavier than the earlier discs; its raw sound, crunchy guitar drive and impeccable rhythmic anchor make for one hell of a listen. The disc is divided into 43 sections (with three hidden cuts) and is reminiscent of Edge of Sanity - Crimson II in this aspect. However, all tracks smoothly bleed into each other, making a one-track album that clocks in at nearly 40 minutes.

Guesting two members from Circus Maximus (speaking of which, have you heard Circus Maximus' 2005 debut yet?), Truls Haugen and Michael Eriksen, For the Love of Art and the Making is the most complex album Finn Zierler has ever written. The album boasts passages laced with intricate instrumentation, where innumerable threads of melodies and riff-based textures are interwoven and embark on some of the most vivid and unorthodox keyboard lines and sequenced sections you'll hear. Zierler has really turned into a keyboard wizard here: the album is packed with blinding synth leads (and the guy solos like a madman!), atmospheric undercurrents, and waves of experimental soundscapes. The dark, cinematic aura that permeated the previous album Section X is readily available here as well, but the music also focuses on amazing guitar work, which seems to alternate between sparse yet effective riffery to terrific leads as on "Temptations" and hard-rocking cuts such as "Dark Wild Rage", a song that boasts huge drum beats, weird sound effects that almost border on industrial, hypnotic synth layerings, and vocals that are as aggressive as they get.

I stopped worrying about Zierler's choice of singers ever since he won me over with Kelly Sundown Carpenter doing a great job filling Jorn Lande's shoes. Bjorn Jansson is no exception. He proves to be a dangerously wicked singer, delivering each piece with utmost emotion on pieces like "The Perfect Heart" where we sings passionately over Zierler's solo piano during the intro before the duo are joined by a cool mutiple vocal arrangement; or the very Lande-inspired singing on "The Black Widow"; as well as the amazing "Purity", a track that combines his powerful voice with shredding guitars and moody synths; or on the simply courageous amalgamation of female choirs, blasbeat-type drums that would fit any death metal band, and excellent harmony vocals with the Circus Maximus guys. One other piece that immediately catches your attention is the second part of "Past the Magic", which is basically a composition made of rhythmic laughter and eerily recalls Jon Oliva to these ears. Moreover, there are so many recurrent themes in the album, as you will discover how many times the great melody and lyrics of the first piece are repeated in different parts through the course of the album.

Lyrically the album is equally intense and, while I've yet to sit and fully decipher the concept, it seems to deal with themes like life, death, love, dishonesty, lies, and so on. Reading the lyrics of the piece called "Sleeping Beauty" evoked words that mourned the loss of innocence to me, but other listeners may interpret them differently. Another thing about this album is that you may want to shuffle and observe how many new doors the experience may open for you. Depending on the order in which you listen to it, your perception of what Finn Zierler really tried to accomplish with this disc may become clearer and For the Love of Art and the Making may end up becoming one of your favourite discs of the year.

This album is a like puzzle where each section reinforces the other only to complicate the process. Still, I have to very highly recommend it to any fan of keyboard-infused dark prog metal with excellent vocals and lyrics.
