Live at the Royal Festival Hall [Live]

Sometimes you can take the party home with you, and by the sound of it, Baaba Maal's gig at London's Royal Festival Hall wasn't just a helluva party, it was also a great musical event. With a band as tight as any James Brown led, Maal and his ensemble strike irresistible grooves where the percussion percolates hotter than anything Starbucks could brew. On "Koni" master guitarist Ernest Ranglin joins the fray--he made his last album with Maal's band--and takes it all in a slightly different, but no less wonderful, direction, before Maal himself sweeps back for the epic, explosive finale of "Douwayra." If you thought soul music was dead, listen to this; it's the African soul. Once you've joined this party, you won't want it to end. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Sit down, buckle up........2006-12-07

This was my earliest exposure to John McL, together with Apocalypse by Mahavishnu Orchestra. A friend loaned me a couple of cassette tapes during my student days. It's everything the folks here have written about and more. Reading a review would do it 0.2% justice. You have to listen to it.

There's nothing that can describe what you feel when you hear Mother Tongues and Blues for LW. Their absolutely incredible raw energy, phrasing and musicality knocked me flat like nothing else I'd heard. When I got a job and started earning, this was among the first CD's I bought.

I listened to this yesterday, 15 years after I first heard it, and it still knocks me flat like nothing else. If you are even remotely interested in jazz of any sort, you owe it to yourself to listen to this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-01-27

Amazing! Certainly one of the best albums I own. I can't imagine anyone not finding something thrilling on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius and Inspired Musical Chemistry!.......2004-12-15

What a breath of fresh air this disc was when it first came out and still is to this very day! After the disastrous resurrection of the Mahavishnu name in the 80's (with NONE of the brilliance), Johnny Mac regrouped and set off on a new course, armed with a customized acoustic axe (w/ midi) and the combined innovativve brilliance of percussionist Trilok Gurtu and a rotating cast of soulful bassists (here, it's Kai Eckhardt).

The end result was nothing short of beautiful, where nuance, beauty and detail combine with ferocity and mystery.

Energized by an appreciative audience, our heroes unfurl Miles Davis' "Blue In Green" which takes on a whole new set of colors in McLaughlin's capable hands as Gurtu and Eckhardt lend empathetic support and Eckhardt turning ina very soulful bass solo as well. "Just Ideas/Jozy" gets downright funky and then leads into the fiery reworking of "Florianapolis" from "Adventures in Radioland". Here, the melody really comes to the fore even as the tempo is DANGEROUSLY high, yet the fearsome threesome keep it together, turning in melodious ideas and never letting the high-velocity get in the way of them. This version absolutely DESTROYS the original (I sure don't miss the shrill high-tech overkill of the 80's Mahavishnu at all here). "Pasha's Love" is a Trilok Gurtu piece that features raga-like exchanges alternating with beautifully yearning segments.

The real piece de resistance is "Mother Tongues", which builds slowly with McLaughlin's tasteful use of guitar-synth and the rhythm section's inventive slow smoldering swing, things get more fiery and then, the big feature, Trilok's percussion extravaganza as McLaughlin and Eckhardt receded quietly into the background. Trilok begins very quietly with all kinds of forest sounds and builds to a monstrous climax, something like a huge steam locomotive pulling out of the station and gathering speed, eventually coming to rest with a beautiful mysterious close.

For an encore, there's "Blues For LW" featuring a feisty vocal-jamming section with all 3 musicians and before long, the crowd roars its approval as our heroes exit triumphantly.

The next best thing to being there.

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2004-09-22

Having been lucky enough to be at the Royal Festival Hall for this recording I can heartily reccomend. McLaughlin, Eckhardt and Gurtu held the audience absolutely spellbound for the entire duration. The focus and intensity of their complex interplay was simply astounding. When this is coupled with the originality of their soundscapes and the emotional depth of the music then you have a truly exceptional recording. I bought it on vinyl when it first came out, now I've got it on CD. I urge you to do so.

5 out of 5 stars I Thought He Was Done!.......2003-03-04

When this CD came out in 1990, I did not expect it to be as wonderful and creative as it is! John had spend the 80's playing more straight up jazz stuff. Honestly, he was boring then. This record brought fusion back, even though it is not a fusion record. This also exposed me to Trilok Gurtu for the first time. He is astounding and John is focused and alive on this recording. This is fusion but it is not at the same time. Intelligent playing and arranging, I can not believe that it was live... but it is! Fantastic spin!

One thing you've got to say about the Moody Blues: unlike the remainder of their grittier Brit Invasion peers, middle age seems to suit them just fine--better than youth, in fact. Albums from the band's late '60s/early '70s commercial heyday pretty much fixed the Blues boys' stance. Having forsaken the modest charms of their initial R&B-influenced recordings, they forged a haughty amalgamation of MOR rock, bombastic symphonic ornamentation, and proto-New Age lyricism--hardly the stuff of restless youth. This live set finds Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Graeme Edge, and Ray Thomas performing their hits ("Tuesday Afternoon," "Nights in White Satin," "Ride My See-Saw," and so on) live with backing from the World Festival, recalling, of course, the band's '67 breakthrough, Days of Future Passed. Roll over Beethoven and tell Mantovani the news. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Moodies still got it........2007-06-01

My dear Moodies may be a little older and a lot grayer but these fabulously talented men can STILL play the living daylights out of their instruments and rock it like no one else! Justin and John's voices have aged well and their chemistry with each other and their audience is one-of-a-kind. Great CD and the DVD is well worth getting as well. Rock on 40 more years Moodies!!

5 out of 5 stars MOODY BLUES LIVE.......2007-05-07

EXCELENT CD SOUNDING BETTER THAN THEY DO ON STUDIO RECORDINGS THIS WAS THE LAST TIME RAY THOMAS PERFORMED WITH THE BAND.
THE ORCHESTRA COMES OVER REALY WELL & MAKE THE WHOLE PERFORMANCE
SOUND GREAT.

5 out of 5 stars Superb blend of orchestra & band.......2007-03-10

I believe that my DVD of the live performance mentioned that the conductor had done the arrangements. Regardless, they are absolutely flawless. You seldom see such integrated and sophisticated collusions
of pop and orchestra that don't sound artificial - these don't - it
makes you believe that Justin was writing for just such an environment.
I've just about worn out my DVD so I thought I should get the CD
and put some of the songs into my playlists. I can't imagine a complete playlist without at least In Your Wildest Dreams, English Sunset, Tuesday Afternoon and a few others. It wouldn't be complete.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay, but there's room for improvement.......2006-07-27

This Moodies live recording with a full orchestra is a bit more subdued and mellow (and so is the audience) than their "Red Rocks" release from 8 years earlier. Three new songs from their 1999 studio release "Strange Times" are performed here. Hayward's uptempo "English Sunset" and John Lodge's "Words You Say" are performed well, but Hayward's vocals on the poignant "Haunted" are extremely strained, shaky and sometimes flat. It's enough to make one cringe. In perhaps one of Ray Thomas' last performances before retiring from the group, he delivers an extremely short version of his classic "Legend Of A Mind" with a flute solo that lasts maybe 30 seconds. In past live performances, an extended version of this song may run from 9 to 12 minutes. The rest of the Moodies classics here are well performed by these legendary "veteran cosmic rockers". My overall opinion is "Hall of Fame" is not as strong a performance as "Red Rocks" from 1992, and judging by the album title, this may be the band's subtle method of focusing attention on them to be rightly voted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, an honor which they richly deserve. This album is worthy of 3 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars They must be the best........2006-07-05

In the 60's/70's I enjoyed listening to the Moody Blues - as the years carried on I had my taste in music that varied, forgetting the Moody Blues ever existed until I began to listen to their songs again. I was so impressed, I had started buying their CD's and class them my favourite group. They are number one playing live on stage and their concert at the Albert Hall was astounding. Hoping they record more live shows. they are the best.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not essential but tight.......1999-04-01

This album offers nothing new or particularly interesting for fans of Baaba's music or African music in general. However, it serves as a nice (and cheap) slice of his recent shows, a 40-minute distillation of his modern sounds: the incorporation of a soul-funk sensibility as heard on the opening track, and the "return to the roots" with Ernest Ranglin. All the musicians play with discipline and spirit, and "African Woman" stands out with its Latin American flavor.

5 out of 5 stars Another triumphant release for Baaba Maal........1999-03-22

Baaba Maal and band are simply terrific on this live recording. Funky, tight, soulful and still melodic, they engage in extended work-outs of some of Baaba's more recent songs. The results are satisying in every respect. The highlight is unquestionably the tender rendition of "Koni", with the great Earnest Ranglin accompanying. The next step for me is to see the real deal,in person and in concert. I can't wait.

The United Nations Orchestra was created by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie to "showcase the varied influences that he considers valuable to the development of jazz." The 15-member ensemble, comprised of famous Latin and black American musicians, is a true all-star orchestra, 10 of its members being bandleaders in their own right. On this 1990 recording, the orchestra was on its last date of a European tour, and it pulls out all the stops on this fiery big-band blowout. All the soloists--saxophonists Paquito D'Rivera and James Moody, trumpeters Arturo Sandoval and Claudio Rodit, trombonists Slide Hampton and Steve Turre-- attempt to keep up with Gillespie and the turbulent percussive undercurrent. This leads to a lot of passionate soloing, along with some requisite grandstanding, but even that seems to fit into the all-star concept of the band. This is extroverted, aggressively confident big-band music meant to dazzle and delight. The driving rhythm section is given center stage on Gillespie's "Tanga," whereby a lengthy section of solos by drummer Ignacio Berroa, master percussionist Airto Moreira, and ace conga man Giovanni Hidalgo brings the house down once again. --Wally Shoup

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Super Orchestra...Great Performances.......2004-07-25

One of my favorite CDs of all time. Dizzy with an all star orchestra in front of a very appreciative audience. How appreciative? The performance received a ten minute standing ovation at the end.

"Tin Tin Deo" brings to mind Chano Pozo with Dizzy and his orchestra in the 40's (Still available on CD). An incredible performance for arrangement, solos, and the pure fire of the orchestra. The ominious percussion intro of Manenguito, Airto, and Ignacio Berroa are particularly effective. The alto solo by Paquito D'Rivera is hair-raisingly gorgeous. Danilo Perez doesn't solo but his piano is crucial, driving the solos and the orchestra with explosive chording.

This is followed by a wonderful display of clarinet mastery by Paquito on the waltz "Seresta" and one of his best compositions: "Samba for Carmen (McRae)".

Flora Purim, one of the best jazz vocalists, is in fine form on "Tanga", as is James Moody on "Kush". He plays a particularly exciting solo here and on "Night in Tunisia". Also of note are the contributions of Slide Hamption, Steve Turre (complete with conch shells), Arturo Sandoval and Claudio Roditi. I highly recommend this CD, but I must say a few solos drift off mike but are audible. I would turn up the volume, just to get the experience. Trust me, it's worth the effort.

Also, the concert can occasionally be seen on the "BET on Jazz" cable channel on it's "Classic Concerts" program. Here, those off-miked solos are clearly audible, so it's worth a look to get the full concert experience (and, of course, to see Flora).

1 out of 5 stars Anything but Royal.......2003-06-26

This was a very disappointing CD on several counts: 1) The recording was very weak--equivalent to an AM broadcast: 2) The All-World band seemed to sleep-walk their way through an unispiring performance; and 3) Arturo Sandoval (the reason I purchased the CD in the first place) had a very minor role and his brilliance could not save this boring self-indugent effort on the part of the band. The only thing worse than purchasing this CD would be to have been in Royal festival Hall on that fateful night.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest jazz CDs.......2003-01-29

This is one of the best jazz CDs I own. It's amazing to listen to Diz play. Also, Arturo Sandoval's work on this album is amazing. He demonstrates his four octave range! Definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Gillespie, Sandoval, D'Rivera... what more could you ask?.......2002-06-14

This CD was recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall, London, in the late 80's. It also exists, I believe, as a DVD and a VHS Video. Having seen the concert at which it was recorded, I would certainly recommend the visuals as well as the music.

The quality of the CD recording is excellent throughout, except for a couple of moments at the end of "A Night in Tunisia" where Sandoval is slightly "off mike". That said, engineering is crisp - this album has all of the benefits of a live recording, with none of the detriments. Enjoyably, the producer has chosen to keep Gillespie's bridges from song to song in place, rather than edit each track into one neatly digestible package.

Gillespie's playing on this album is typical of the maestro in his later years, and is a pleasure to listen to. However, the real star of this album is Arturo Sandoval, who was at his stratospheric best when this album was recorded. The exchanges between Gillespie and Sandoval on "And then She Stopped" are worth the price of the Album alone, as is the wonderfully arranged "Tin Tin Deo". James Moody and Paquito D'Rivera provide a wonderful reed section, and D'Rivera in particular plays with real fire.

It's hard to pick out a particular track which is best; they each have their own character. However, the rhythm section plays with extraordinary warmth and attention to detail throughout, and the real joy of the music shines throuhg. If you like later Gillespie, are a Sandoval fan, or just like great modern big band music, this album is a must.
