great for travel.......2007-07-28
the CD has great music on it - I love Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy so listen to this CD as I travel in my car.
Fast shipment - great product!.......2007-07-12
Thank you for having such a great cd. This item was a gift, and they loved it!
When I'm Calling You: I have heard better collections.......2006-08-19
A bit disappointing. This collection of 22 recordings by the great Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy features only four duets. The rest are all solos. "Wanting You" and "Song of Love" are missing, as well as other memorable duets. Two arias (Waltz Song from "Romeo et Juliette" and Toreador's Song from "Carmen") show Jeanette and Nelson could do a respectable job with opera. The sound is sometimes muddy, e.g., "Vilja." But the old favorites--"Indian Love Call," "Will You Remember?" "Ah, Sweet Mystery," "Rose Marie," and others--redeem the collection.
Making very old recordings into modern CDs.......2006-03-18
Making very old recordings into modern CDs does not bring the quality up to today's standards, but it was probably handled here about as well as it could have been.
A pure delight!.......2002-10-19
This is a remarkable collection of Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald classics. Considering the masters of these monaural recordings are over 60 years old, the sound quality is as good as it gets!

pure enjoyment.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD for my husband who loves classical and the "old sounds of music". He has thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD (constantly I might add) which has clear, pure sound. I think it is one of the best surprises I have bought for him and he thinks I am brilliant for finding it!
I had forgotten.............2006-04-01
I just reintroduced myself to this wonderful musical team. I have all their films on VHS and i'm hoping that someday someone will have enough sense to put them on DVD. As far as this CD goes it is wonderful. I've written reviews on most their films. I saw them all as a child at a festival many years ago. I'm not in their era, i'm really a product of the 60's but their music was like none other and if you think about it, it paved the way for such operatta's like Les Mis, Phanton, Miss Siagon. I'm still in awe of Jeanette and Nelson. What beautiful voices and perfect pitch. I think my favorite song if i could really pick one would be "Lover Come Back to Me." The emotion is overpowering as it is with most of their duets. Refresh yourself by buying this great CD and let your mind fall in love all over again.
Great Album.......2002-08-25
I was pleased with the clarity of the album. I have always liked Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald but this is the first recording I have had. It is over an hour of his songs and very good selection. Most of the songs are the same on Sweethearts but there are about 6 different ones. I have enjoyed both recording very much and am sure anyone that likes their music will be pleased.
CLASSIC!.......2001-03-14
It's pretty sad that I'm the first one writing a review about this classic recording. Kids today get so swept up in Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys that they forget what their grandparents listened to. This starts you off with Indian Love Call, which is perfectly fitting. Other highlights include Auf Wiederseh'n, Senorita, and Italian Street Song. My favorite track is Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life. It's wonderously beautiful. And of course, the great Rose Marie, the theme song from the fabulous movie. It closes out with Will You Remember, a song that I know I will personally remember always. Fantastic, go buy it now!

Customer Reviews:
Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11
This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.
Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.
It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.
Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

Queen of Songs.......2007-07-29
I received this CD 'San Fracisco and other Jeanette MacDonald Favorites' a few days ago and have listened to it carefully several times. She is about a generation before my time; so far I have seen only two pictures of her: 'San Francisco' and 'The Merry Widow'. In San Francisco, I discovered she can also sing opera successfully to some degree As for The Merry Widow, I much prefer the later version performed by Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas although Turner didn't sing by herself in the film and Lamas is a lot more convincing than Maurice Chevalier as a Casanova type beau; to be truthful, I can't stand grandpa Chevalier. I beleive I also saw another of her movie which she played quite late in her career because she played mother to Jane Powell, this one I saw in the theater in my teenage days, for your information, I saw almost every MGM musicals in those heyday years. Unfortunately though, I don't quite remember the story of it, but I do remember vaguely that MacDonald sang Un bel di from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and when she sang she formed her mouth so beautifully that one could forget it if she didn't sing well.
One thing I can assert with confidence is that MacDonald is a very beautiful lady oozes with glamour, and is very classy. Classiness was a very prominent and widespread quality of female stars in that era, Lana Turner who played the wealthy merry widow was just one case. If I were to make a list it would occupy a full page, nowadays, it would be impossible to name just three or four female stars with class, no offense, please. Now let me come back to the main subject that is MacDonald's art of singing. Well, she certainly has good vocal technigue, her high note is firm to the very top and she is able to sustain it for a considerable duration as she has displayed quite often in this disc. The voice itself is delicate and sweet, just like her person. However, she tends to sing with monotone which make her singing sounds bland, like no. 4, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, may be if she move a notch down the scale it would sound more pleasant. Songs My Mother Taught Me is just about the only song she successfully sings with feelings. Here, I would like to point out that a few songs are worth repeated listenings: Ciribiribin, The Donkey Serenade, Italian Street Song, and of course, Songs My Mother Taught Me.
Songs no. 16 to 22, I'm sorry to say that they are not up to my standard, I have been listening to opera singing for over thirty years you know. I must mention here that MacDonald's French seems very good, I don't know French though, nevertheless, I can tell just by listening
Queen of Songs is a title crowned her by the Chinese people in that time, she was indeed highly esteemed.
Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

nothing new here.......2006-04-25
If you don't already have an album by these two, get this one. however, if you have several and are looking for something you haven't heard, keep looking. particularly there are a number of Nelson Eddy songs not released here, or any place else, as far as I can tell, and I'd love to have them. he did a whole collection of old hymns, none of which appear to have been re-issued, plus other items. This album is yet another re-packaging of the usual Eddy/McDonald songs you can find anywhere--good ones, yes, and in fine fettle for their age, but nothing different.
VERY ROMANTIC AND BEAUTIFUL SONGS FOR EVERYONE!!.......2002-02-09
I LOVED this CD and have listened to it most of the day! Obviously, the tracks were reproduced from old recordings and hence are just a bit scratchy, but that only adds to their charm. Had the scratches been TOTALLY removed, sound quality would have been lost. It's a BEAUTIFUL ALBUM...and wonderful listening for anyone. I especially recommend it for lovers..both young and old. Jeanette had the voice of an angel, and I've never heard any female singer that can equal her. If you just buy ONE romantic CD, this is the ONE for you!!

Customer Reviews:
extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21
I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.
While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.
An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29
This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).
For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.
For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.
I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!
I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!
I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!
Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30
It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

Customer Reviews:
Satisfied fan!.......2002-01-06
I thoroughly enjoy this CD. This CD has half solos by Jeanette MacDonald and half by Nelson Eddy. There are no duets, but I wanted to have a CD that had some songs which I haven't heard before. Nothing will ever top the voices of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy dueting together, but this CD rounds out the collection of any fan.
