Product Description
The debut album 'Equiibria' from hotly tipped Rio singer-songwriter Sabrina Malheiros brings with it a sublime mix of bossas and sambas with touches of hip-hop, r 'n' b and electronica, 'Equilibria' combines timeless Brazilian song writing with contemporary electronics and beats to produce this years hottest Brazilian debut.

The daughter of Alex Malheiros from the legendary Brazilian group Azymuth, Sabrina wrote the majority of the tracks at home with her father giving 'Equilibria' a warm, intimate vibe. The combination of Sabrina's youthful exuberance and Alex's 30 years of song-writing experience make for an accomplished debut.

As the name suggests, 'Equilibria', is the perfect mix - classic Brazilian song writing combined with contemporary production, guaranteeing this album appeal for both established Far Out fans as well as those people into the sound of 'Nu-Brazilâ'. "I think that this is the first contemporary Brazilian album of the last 15 years that measures up to the classic Brazilian albums of the past", adds producer Venom. We think you'll agree with him!

5 out of 5 stars Superb!!!!!!!.......2007-06-02

Yes, this is a fantastic debut CD for the lovely Sabrina. I'd like to say that I sort grew up as the #1 fan of her father's super group, Axymuth. Sabrina has picked up where Axymuth left off, plus a hefty amount of today's brazilian sound. I was so excited to listen to this debut, even before recieving it. And I must say that once played it for the first time I got goose bumps. Everything as far as the arrangement, composition and lyrics came as no surprise to me that Alex Malheiros played a major role aside from being the proud father. I just hope she will eventually tour in the U.S. I barely know your music Sabrina, but I love you!

4 out of 5 stars Nice listening but a little uneven.......2007-01-04

A very nice addition to my Brazilian collection. More Cibelle than Maria Rita. Compares with Rosalie De Souza and Bebel Gilberto but a little more club-like in the sound. A number of the songs are simply excellent. A couple are less so.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-02-07

This album had me completely speechless. This is like finding a rare pearl. I found this in a Ferndale record store and I knew I was buying this as soon as I heard the first song. Incredible music is all that I can say about this album. Beautiful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Debut!.......2005-08-11

As already stated, Sabrina Malheiros is the daughter of Azymuth's Alex Malheiros. Knowing this you can figure that she's had a very diverse and unique musical up-bringing, from fusion to traditional. This is her debut album and it's on the Far Out Records label, where Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Troubleman, Seu Jorge and countless others have released stunning albums. Far Out Records to me is one of the best labels out there. I've never been disappointed with the works I've picked up from them and what's better, they release loads of tremendous tunes on 12" with great remixes and takes. Kudos Far-Out!

This CD starts out well with "Terra De Ninguem", a nice little bossa nova influenced cut that dances and glides with a light flute and arrangement. "Love Sorte" kicks with a bit of bossa and percussion while giving a hint of Berimbau in it (as did a few others). "Vibrasom" is where you get a hint of the hip-hop/R&B influences that influenced her - cute song altough I'll wonder how time-less it'll be; always the risk with random added grunts, etc. "Passa" is another one that's similar but it's got a good groove to it although I prefer the remixes on the 12". Other cuts that I enjoyed were the original take to the cut given an explosive remix by Kenny Dope (available on 12" too), "Estacao Verao", and the VERY fitting remake to an old Ana Mazzotti classic, "Eu Sous Mais Eu". That one shouldn't be too surprising - Azymuth had a heavy hand in Ana Mazzotti's album back in the mid seventies and with them working with Sabrina here, they managed to capture much of that same magic that existed then. Then there are other cuts here that I enjoyed but don't want to mention them ALL.

I certainly recommend this! It's got an interesting vibe to it and Sabrina's voice is adorable to me. The album wasn't without a misstep or two - "Equilibria" wasn't one that grabbed me, for example. But there's enough strong songs here to carry it through and make me REALLY look forward to her next album and future 12" that she'll inevitably feature on with other Far-Out musicians and groups. If you dig this, you should definitely check out other Far Out artist as mentioned before along with Incognito's works, Rosalia De Souza's "Garota Moderna", Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo" (that one was more experimental to me), A Bossa Eletrica and a little group called 'Vertente' that's also off of the Far Out catalogue.

NEO-BRAZILIAN, JAZZY, SOULFUL ETC. IT WORKS FOR ME. THIS CD GETS BONUS POINTS FOR HAVING THE ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS TO THE TRACKS IN THE LINER NOTES. HER VOICE IS FRESH AND THE LYRICS ARE INCITEFUL....HOPEFULLY, THE FUTURE OF BRAZILIAN SOUL FOR NIGHTLIFE AND SATELLITE RADIO STATIONS. DONT WORRY ABOUT THE IMPORT PRICING, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
