Product Description
A superb 19 track compilation by the late '60s French pop chanteuse who's music career skyrocketed in 1969 with 'Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus', a duet with her lover & mentor at the time, Serge Gainsbourg. The saucy song, her most popular, was banned from airplay. This set is comprised almost entirely of Gainsbourg compositions, with two exceptions, a duet with Brett Anderson of Suede entitled 'Les Yeux Fermes' & 'La Gadoue' with Les Negresses Vertes. Philips. 1996.

Birkin has a limited voice. Gainsbourgh was a troubled man. When they worked together it produced unqualified magic. He was brilliant and she was patient. Thier work is touching and ethereal. Don't expect fireworks...just sit back and appreciate his poetry and her earnest effort to express it.

I could have sworn I had this one, so I went to look for it because I wanted to hear somehing on it (since I thought I had it) again before passing judgement on it. Didn't find it. Amazon's records say I have four ( count 'em: 4) of hers, and this isn't one of them--and I can find all four and Amazon is right! And I have on my four, among other things: Je t'aime, ni moi non plus; Fuir Le Bonheur de Peur Que; Ballade de Johnny Jane; and Ex-Fan des Sixties, all of which are on this one, and I'm not getting this one too. These just mentioned, however, and many others, I personally think she can sing well enough so that, as what they are in the first place, they're fine. However, on what I do have (which has Love for Sale, for example), she can be terrible in English--as to all of: the choice of song, how she presents herself and her delivery and entire style of singing, right down to and including the arrangement. Also, another one, she absolutely cannot sing which is NOT on the above track listings, and which I have on more than one, is La DecadanSe (don't you understand the song? either? ). Also, there is a limit to how much I can take (eternally? no, thank God) of HIS songs, for which reason A La Legere is very refreshing (and has several I like, notably: Les Avalanches, Les Cles Du Paradis, Si Tout Etait Faux, and Trouble, none of which were written by him, all of which are done well enough by her and everyone involved. Also, lets face it, unless you are glamourizing people with problems to such an extent that you are glamourizing their problems (or are doing that anyway for other reasons) you know or should know that: 1. drinking yourself into the grave at any age is to be avoided 2. ditto smoking 3. ditto drugs). The fact that someone with such problems (especially the first and the third, although the second will kill ya' too) accomplishes something, whether creatively or otherwise, doesn't make those problems acceptable. Same goes for "womanizing"--it's neither glamourous nor acceptable. (Sorry.) This kind of stuff, therefore, has limited appeal--but it's definitely not no appeal. That said, for something new and different, and just possibly better, and at least "now", of Jane Birkin, I'd try A la Legere.

1 out of 5 stars Oh, come on!.......2000-09-17

I will never be able to figure out how it is that someone with the musical instinct of Serge Gainsbourg would ever get into his head that this woman should be encouraged to sing. She was lovely to look upon, and a very good breather, I grant you, but a singer she most certainly is not.

      4 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasures.......2001-03-31

There are those albums that see the head, heart, and political correctness, effortlessly corralled in agreement. Then there are those that are, as the rock-snob game would have it, guilty pleasures. These are those albums that remind us of a certain date, or that saved us as teengaers from despair, or that simply look and sound a lot like sex must have in 1968. This is the latter. Certainly 'The Velvet Underground and Nico' is a great album, so too the first Viloent Femmes, P J Harvey's 'Dry', but what the hell is so wrong with sex in Paris in 1968 ?

Now it is possible to play the 'Serge Gainsbourg was a great artist' game, and God knows I have in my time. And so much of this rather odd best-of is Serge's work - 'Babe Alone in Babylon', 'Di Doo Dah', the iconic 'Je t'aime (Moi Non Plus)' are all brilliant examples of the way he chewed up American jazz and rock, and English Pop, music traditions, to spit them out all gauloise-y. Certainly he had his tongue in his cheek, and in Birkin's, Bardot's and Deneuve's, among others, when he wrote his endlessly French celebrations of sex, beauty, suicidal despair and death, though not necessarily in that order. The 'Serge'game, a favourite of rocksnobs, does rather miss the point, though. These songs are bizarre, sexy, unnerving, at times stupid, often funny, but it does not ultimately matter. They are all sung by Birkin.

And Birkin, as beautiful as she was, and is, and as fine an actress when faced with a challenge, could not sing. Hers was a fragile English schoolgirl voice, her French was always schoolgirl French, her phrasing was erratic, her breath-control eccentric, her ability to carry a tune dubious, but none of this matters. Birkin, like France Gall, Brigitte Bardot, Claudine Longet, and, ultimately her own daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, along with Vanessa Paradis and Alizee, more recently, are jailbait pop for those who like their gaols to be the Bastille.

Her 'best' album is probably 'Babe Alone In Babylon', while the two French Master Serie volumes are probably the best of 'Best of's, but this is a good retrospective, featuring some of the more recent of her work, as well as much of the earlier. And that earlier work is still, well, breathless, vulnerable, sexy, sometimes sensual, with her voice making a nice contrast with Gainsbourg's limousine-oaked death-rattle.

Jane's appeal, I would argue, is largely other than musical. Charm, in its most English of forms, charmant, in its most French, Birkin ultimately offers pleasure much more than guilt.
