From the Label
Classical flute music from India that is both devotional and romantic. The divine playing of Hariprasad with tabla master Zakir Hussain moves mountains of emotion.
This historic concert took place in 1974 at the Stone House (literally a large granite room) in Fairfax, California, and was a youthful collaboration between two true geniuses of Indian classical music.

Exploring the connections between early music and what we know as folksong, Joel Cohen and his very adventurous and competent band of musicians not only show us where many familiar tunes come from, they also give us fresh and illuminating renditions of songs from the 10th century to the middle of the 20th century. Besides the recording's obvious educational value, its primary purpose, according to Cohen, is "to give pleasure." That it does, often in amusing ways, as when a song with religious origins is transformed into a ribald descendant. It's also fun to see how widespread some songs are, with different versions common to many countries. Cohen demonstrates how songs that came from Renaissance forms were preserved by common folk long after the "elite" classes abandoned them. The songs are enhanced by excellent instrumental playing and well-conceived arrangements. --David Vernier

Charming, simple & striking. Full of delightful surprises!.......2002-11-29
Many early music groups these days explain cross-cultural musical influences in their program notes, and proceed to play their selections accordingly. Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata take it the logical step further by actually performing the "root" pieces side by side with the later music that reflects their particular influence. The result is inspired, thought-provoking groupings of related tunes and texts that span not only centuries but continents. The Boston Camerata is primarily a vocal ensemble, with a sound that is spare, pure and direct. Some of their renditions are performed a cappella, while others are accompanied by light, period instrumentation. If you've ever heard this group live in concert, you may recall the surreal effect of sitting in a theater that is pin-drop quiet, waiting for one or two musicians at a time to step forward and break the silence with a clarity and presence that holds the entire audience spellbound from first note to last. The effect of listening to this recording is much the same. My favorites on this release are the groupings of different versions of the same ballad--"Three Ravens", "Gypsy Davy", and "Barbara Allen", for example. The pairing of the Appalacian song "Betty Anne" with its exact harmonic match--a 16th century ricercada for viols by Diego Ortiz--is also quite striking, and I also enjoyed the "shape-note" and "Fa-sol-la" singing-school selections representative of early American music. In the insert, director Joel Cohen explains: "This unorthodox recording, an intentionally provocative mix of early art song and modern folksong, is meant first of all to give pleasure - but it is also a meditation on history, on archetypes, and on the transmission of human culture." The Boston Camerata succeeds admirably here on both counts!
Tour de Force of American Musical Roots!.......2001-01-05
Prepare to go on an amazing, haunting musical tour when you put this disc on your player. Joel Cohen (bless him) has once again assembled a group of musicians and singers who are up to the task of taking themselves, and you the listener, back through the mists of musical time. This disc contains songs that span hundreds of years, many of which actually originate in other lands. Yet, these songs would find their way into the early diverse fabric of colonial America, and go on to inspire much of emerging folk music in this country. Some of these songs are secular, but others have a distinctly religious flavor (as in the first piece on Judgment Day and the "stars falling"). Others are merry, dance-like tunes, and remind one of what might have been performed in medieval courts in Europe. Some are sung in english, others in different languages. The range of musical style and vocal interpretation is incredible. This wonderful diversity reminds the listener that America always had diverse roots, and even in colonial times, we were a nation that drew its strength and inspiration from many cultural sources. I like to listen to this disc during the bleak nights of winter, but it is wonderful music for any occasion. If you really are intrigued by the historical development of American music -- or any music -- then this disc is a "must" for your collection. Also recommended: "The World Turned Upside Down" (Barry Philips), "A Land of Pure Delight" (His Majestie's Clerkes), and "Simple Gifts: Shaker Cbants and Spirituals" (Joel Cohen and Boston Camerata).
Astonishing.......2000-03-25
The album is astonishing. It is rare to find a continuous line of musical thought from the turn of the previous millenium to its end. This album demonstrates the evolution of music over about a thousand year period and includes some very early versions of what we would call modern songs.
It is worth the price of the CD several times over and is one of my favorites in my CD collection.

Rare glimpse of Melba unfettered by the acoustic horn. .......2007-04-15
Several of these selections give modern opera lovers their only clear vocal image of Melba. Collectors of ancient opera recordings are, through years of familiarity, capable of making allowances for the sounds on the acoustic records. However; most listeners cannot: because of this the few electrical recordings on this CD offer the only viable chance for most of us to hear Melba in something like her natural sound. Of special interest is her haunting singing of the Willow Song - Melba's style founded on the Marchesi method of breath support gives a supernatural quality, an eerie and haunting other-worldliness to this most affecting of simple melodies. People claimed Melba was not a great actress but this gives the lie to that. Listen in particular to the non-pareil pianissimo, the beautiful tone projected and sustained without any apparent effort. No one living can sing like this. Moreover, Melba achieves her effects on a listener through a living melody rather than the declamatory or push and pull vocalism we hear today from even our best vocalists. Melba's extraordinary aliveness, kept on leash and which she flaunts like a Goddess snapping off bolts of lightning, suggests an undaunted will and irrepresible energy . She was certainly a true Queen of Opera.
The Naxos issue is the fourth and last in a series, the others are all from acoustic horns, and should be purchased only by knowledgeable collectors. Melba was born the year the American Civil War began - thus these recordings made in the twenties when she was in her sixties offer further proof of just how remarkably well-schooled a singer she was.
Fare thee well!.......2004-07-07
Thanks to splendid reissues such as this, Dame Nellie Melba, once the most celebrated soprano in the world, is still a presence for C21st century listeners.
Collected here, and completing the Naxos series reissuing her EMI recordings, is everything she recorded between 1921 and 1926. As is well known, the opportunity was taken, soon after the introduction of the electrical recording process, to record her farewell appearance at Covent Garden in June 1926. Two acts of "La Boheme"and the last act of "Otello" were performed. Of the many 78 sides made on location that proved to be technically acceptable, Melba would allow only three to be issued in her lifetime - one of which was her farewell speech. Well, they are all assembled here, allowing us to hear her with some of her younger compatriot Australians whose careers she promoted.
Six months later, she initiated a final recording session to help forward the career of one of them, the 26 year old baritone John Brownlee. "It was for her a trying afternoon," wrote producer Fred Gaiberg in his memoirs.
These final four sides are here too, Melba's only studio electrically recorded items, two of them in duet with John Brownlee. I urge all readers, even those who might have written Melba off as a famous singer stunning in performance but luckless in recording studios to go first to Track 17 on this CD. Hear the voice, rock steady, still able to provide dynamic contrasts and with an occasional gleam on it, in perfect ensemble with John Brownlee, and unimpeded by fierce surface hiss. For some reason the other three items from this final recording session are not nearly as vivid.
Restoration engineer Ward Marston, with help from various sources, compiled this invaluable 70 minute CD.

Ahir Bhairav, the morning raga is just the beginning !.......2005-01-04
The raag Ahir Bhairav sounds the best when played by the bansuri. One can picture early morning (dawn) instantly as the raag begins. Zakir Hussain and Hariprasad Chaurasiya have performed some of the best Indian Classical music. Considering this album was recorded in the 70s the recording may not have the best sound quality. But one can see the beginings of a beautiful relationship between the two artists in this album. These two artists seem to know each other so well while performing, their concerts are always in unison.
I would recommend looking for music in which these two are performing. My favorite is a 3 CD series called "Possession", recorded in the late 90s so the sound quality is excellent.( it is hard to find this album on the web.) The three raags they play are, Puriya Kalyan, Kalaranjani and Hamsadhwani. Here they show so much discipline and conformity that the audience can't help express their excitement. There are moments where it appears that Hariji is playing the tabla on his bansuri and Zakirji is making bansuri notes on the bayan ! It is truely beautiful.
All three CDs are from a live recording and they are distinctly marked by the sound of the cicadas through out the recording ...... perhaps the gods came down in this form to listen to this music.
Don't worry about the cicadas, once you start listening you won't even notice them.
An Inspiring Performance.......2003-11-03
Raga Ahir Bhairav is my favorite Indian raga. It is meant to be heard early in the morning, around six. Hariprasad exhales a haunting, peaceful, erotic and at times frightening improvisation through the bansuri (bamboo flute)accompamnied by Zakir Hussain's tabla. The two tracks are actually one long raga (song). The raga starts extremely slowly as Hariprasad improvises the first notes. The music begins to take shape in track two building shocking rythm and a breathtaking climax.
Good -- but not the best.......2001-08-15
First, I must say I am a great fan of Hariprasad-ji. There is simply no other bansuri player with such divine tone and magnificent phrasing -- and few musicians of any kind with such depth and expressiveness. That being said, this is not among my favorite recordings of Hariprasad-ji. Don't get me wrong -- it is beautiful, and the playing is excellent, but I would expect no less from these two artists. However, I prefer the recordings that he did for the Nimbus label. "Four Dhuns" is the easiest to get [...]; "Rag Bhimpalasi" is also available. Made much more recently, the Nimbus recordings showcase a more mature artist, with greater subtlety and more inspired -- and inspirational -- melodies.
Also, while another reviewer praised the acoustics and ambiance of this recording, I would have to disagree. Yes, the natural reverb of the Stone House is good, but there are a few places where it sounds as if there are people talking in the background, and there is the occasional pop or click, as if something was dropped or a mic was tapped. Given the entrancing nature of this music, I found that very jarring. The timbre of the bansuri also sounds, to me, more harsh than it does in some of the later recordings.
Don't get me wrong -- these are comparatively minor, nit-picky details, and how can you not like a CD by two such masters? However, for a first recording of Hariprasad-ji's work, I would point towards "Four Dhuns" or "Rag Bhimpalasi." If you want to hear a more current pairing between these two artists, you might like the first Remember Shakti CD, which is also live. I can hear the purists cringing now -- it is a fusion CD -- but it is among the finest of the genre.
sublime!.......2000-06-20
What Zakir Hussain and Hari Prasad Chaurasia have recorded here is nothing short of sublime. For those unfamiliar to music of this kind, this recording is an excellent introduction. Brilliant virtuosity and outstanding musicianship are enhanced by an unique acoustical setting and tasteful recording methods to render this one of the best recordings under the Rykodisc label. The warmth of tone and expressful phrasing of Hari Prasad are only accompianied by the droning tambura on the first half and later joined by the mastery of Zakir Hussain on the tabla in the second half. The energetic nature of this music surprisingly brings one to stillness...a stillness that is well suited for pre- or post-meditation listening. Listen and you'll see. OM Shanthi, Peace.
Stunning!.......1999-12-27
One of the great recordings. Both masters at their finest. Recommended to anyone interested in classical Indian music.
