The Celtic Fiddle Of Liz Knowles

Kentucky-born violinist Liz Knowles's accomplishments include membership in the touring Riverdance ensemble, a soloist's role on the Michael Collins soundtrack, and recording credits with artists ranging from Paula Cole and the Sirius String Quartet to jazz pianist Marcus Roberts and Steve Reich. Her specialty and passion is Celtic fiddling, a talent nurtured by her grandmother (whose violin Knowles uses today) and her bagpipe-playing mother. Her debut album features 11 handsome acoustic instrumental tracks--three original compositions and eight traditional pieces Knowles arranged. While a full album of fiddle music could become a wearying, monochromatic affair, Knowles smartly varies textures, tempos, and supplemental instrumentation (Chris Cunningham on guitar, pipe-player Jerry O'Sullivan on one track, accordion whiz John Whelan on another, et al.) to deliver a winning, largely upbeat package. Knowles's selections reveal a fondness for works with modest starts and spirited, reeling endings. Noteworthy: her surging, sparkling interpretation of "The Crooked Road"; the momentum-building, near-hoedowns of "The Kinyons" (a splendid original) and "The Blacksmith"; the yearning ballardry of "The Gift of Falling"; and the unexpected "Laz," a fiery, percussion-heavy traditional Turkish number executed in demanding 7/8 time. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Liz Knowles "The Celtic Fiddle".......2005-07-06

Although a good CD, this is not a current representation of Liz Knowles' accomplished playing and maturity on her fiddle. We need to hear more current recordings from you, Liz!

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful CD!.......1999-08-09

Now THIS is Celtic fiddle playing

5 out of 5 stars Liz Knowles rules!.......1999-07-24

When I saw her in Riverdance, I was blown away, but her CD is even better than I anticipated! Highly recomended!

5 out of 5 stars A great cup of tea.......1999-05-02

This is Irish-style fiddling by a virtuoso. The first track is an explosively lively piece composed by Liz Knowles herself. Most of the rest of the album consists of tunes that will be familiar, maybe too familiar, to people that are into this genre. But she plays them radiantly. Accompaniment and production are polished and very good. Predominantly, we have the fiddle front and center, and guitar and percussive instruments, not too loud, happening in the background. Boxes and flutes appear on a minority of the tracks. This is Liz Knowles' first album. Although it includes a couple of bits that I find boring, I will certainly be buying any more albums that come out from her.

5 out of 5 stars She Plays Your Heart Strings As Well As Her Fiddle!!!.......1998-12-08

The energy is sweeping and uplifting and you will wear out your CD if that is possible. Better than Coffee to get you going. Her slower tunes were excellent as well. You will be pleased! I found myself dancing around the house...with a smile on my face.
