Just a few years ago, Omar Faruk Tekbilek could be found playing for belly dancers with his group, the Sultans. But with One Truth, he further establishes himself as an artist to be reckoned with in his own right. The Turkish-born Tekbilek has been working a Middle Eastern fusion since his Suleyman the Magnificent soundtrack with producer-composer Brian Keane. One Truth follows the trail blazed by the ensuing albums, such as Beyond the Sky, upping the rhythmic ante with some deeply layered percussion tracks and letting Faruk cut loose with ecstatic Sufi wails. But this is a mostly instrumental affair. Tekbilek plays just about every Turkish instrument you can think of, including the ney, darbouka, oud, def, and bendir. And that's just on one track. On "I Love You," he carves gorgeous melodies on the ney flute as lush arrangements from producer-keyboardist Ron Yuval surround him. Flamenco guitarist Adam Del Monte rips across the throbbing percussion of "Red Skies," and "ARA'ya" strikes a more contemplative mood with a deep and low ney flute over drones and birds. If there is One Truth, this album gets close to it. --John Diliberto

Watch the stars descend..........2007-07-09
It opens with "My Radio," which opens with what sounds like a sitar, but quickly swallows itself into a sparkly little drum-synth pop song. "It's hard to remember days/Mornings lost in a chronic haze/Breath is fast and the trains are slow/I barely feel it though," Torquil Campbell murmurs. "That crimson dress too thin/All winter up her woods/I touched it, it felt good..."
It follows up with a mellow electropoppy cover of the Smiths' "This Charming Man," demo of "When" -- very funk-techno, with a dancey beat. It's a very basic song: the guy wants the girl back, and doesn't have the strength to stay broken up because of his love for her. "Tried to do the friend thing/And ended up sending/My last goodbye/Through Wednesdays mail/But my heart's so frail/That by Thursday, I wrote again..."
Then comes the two live tracks, which are well produced enough that only a slight echo betrays them: the mellow "On Peak Hill" and vaguely ominous "Going Going Gone," apparently with Emily Haines crooning, "Love's just another rhyme." And the EP ends with the beautiful "Theme From the Stars," a delicate piano ballad shrouded in synth.
The Stars don't really sound like this anymore -- they're more acoustic in recent albums, as opposed to the electropoppy sound of this EP and the following "Nightsongs." But though they were only starting out in this EP, they turned out some pretty good music, with solid lyrics and instrumentation.
The instrumentation was pretty bare-bones at the time, since there were only two regular band members at the time-- mostly it's swirling poppy synth and some drum machines, but they weave in some delicate piano and acoustic guitar in the last song. In fact, that last song is what really elevates the EP from "good" to "excellent" -- it's a truly exquisite little song.
And Torquil Campbell writes unashamedly sensual lyrics -- the colour of a dress, the starlight during a kiss, desolate hills, and the devastating pain of finding out that your love has found someone else. "He speaks in a voice I know/Sounds like sound when the tide is low/We kiss to the voice each night/Bathed in pale reactor light..."
"A Lot of Little Lies For the Sake Of One Big Truth" is a big name for a little EP, bu a solid one that shows the Stars' skills at the very start of their careers.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Reaching for a different sound.......2007-06-30
Each of the tunes is attempting to play with the textures, some of the synth work is very distinctive and I've never heard anything like it since. Overall, the writing is great, "Love and Understanding" notwithstanding (pun intended and necessary-- this tune is pandering to pop at its worst... guess they were trying to get some airplay with that one... whew!).
The set winds up with McL actually getting political-- "The Unknown Dissident" (with a nice alto cameo by then-NY Session grandmaster David Sanborn) has a message behind the stated theme: the injustice in the world when those who dissent with the popular mindset are abused (and in this case, shot) for their beliefs. It is a rare nod to the notion of freedom, something that McL has never gotten across in this way before or since, but something essential to his art, and the work of every true artist in any medium.
This effort is to be applauded for its different tack... but the group had no commercial potential and didn't make it through the year. Before long, John was moving in yet another direction.

Album Description
This three volume compilation is tribute to the genius of three uniquely talented men--a philosopher, a composer, and a pianist-musicologist. These works began with the philosophical searchings of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff, an Armenian intellectual at the turn of the 20th century. His homeland was the crossroad for the diverse cultures that ringed the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. His fascination with the human spirit and his searching for the truth took him on vast journeys through India, Tibet and China. A keen observer, Gurdjieff, began to accumulate bits and pieces of musical traditions. These he combined with his provocatively inspired visions as a universal symbol of his philosophical beliefs. Gurdjieff, however, did not have the musical ability to transform his abstractions into reality. Fortunately, one of his disciples was a gifted and successful composer in St. Petersburg, Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann, whom he met in 1917. As a fellow searcher for the truth, de Hartmann was eager to transform the raw musical utterances of Gurdjieff into sophisticated piano compositions. Those scores, sadly, were left in a state of disarray in the estate of de Hartmann. Decades later, musicologist, professor, and pianist Cecil Lytle, became the final element of the equation. In the mid 1980s, he and a team of researchers began a three year quest, scrupulously studying the scattered files of de Hartmann's scores, assembling the first truly accurate arrangements of the Gurdjieff/de Hartmann legacy. A man in touch with the philosophical, as well, as the musical nature of the works, Lytle performs them with deep emotion and unsurpassed skill. The three volumes vary in their nature. Seekers of the Truth presents the reflective, ceremonial music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann's majestic suites. Reading of a Sacred Book contains some of their dance and character pieces of a more lively nature. Words for a Hymn to the Sun completes the trilogy with the final works of the great spiritual teacher, Georges Gurdjieff. Truly, these dramatic piano performances serve as the highest praise to three remarkable individuals.Customer Reviews:

The first volume of my favorite "Gurdjieff" set........2005-05-28
This set, by Cecil Lytle, is one of the first "compete" sets. Lytle plays the "Janus Edition" of these works, which were originally prepared and superivsed for private distribution by DeHartmann himself.
I have several "complete sets" of the Gurdjieff/DeHartmann music, and this is the one that I listen to most often. The other "complete" set (some might say more complete) can be found in the "classical" section of amazon.com; this other set follows the new "Schott Music" edition, the only sheet music readily available. While this Cecil Lytle set is by far my favorite, I also highly recommend the "other" complete set on the Wergo label, usually found under the "classical" music department.
