One Truth

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Just a few years ago, Omar Faruk Tekbilek could be found playing for belly dancers with his group, the Sultans. But with One Truth, he further establishes himself as an artist to be reckoned with in his own right. The Turkish-born Tekbilek has been working a Middle Eastern fusion since his Suleyman the Magnificent soundtrack with producer-composer Brian Keane. One Truth follows the trail blazed by the ensuing albums, such as Beyond the Sky, upping the rhythmic ante with some deeply layered percussion tracks and letting Faruk cut loose with ecstatic Sufi wails. But this is a mostly instrumental affair. Tekbilek plays just about every Turkish instrument you can think of, including the ney, darbouka, oud, def, and bendir. And that's just on one track. On "I Love You," he carves gorgeous melodies on the ney flute as lush arrangements from producer-keyboardist Ron Yuval surround him. Flamenco guitarist Adam Del Monte rips across the throbbing percussion of "Red Skies," and "ARA'ya" strikes a more contemplative mood with a deep and low ney flute over drones and birds. If there is One Truth, this album gets close to it. --John Diliberto

Every indie fan knows about Stars by now. But in 2001, the Canadian band put out a little EP of jumbled stuff from their then-forthcoming full-length debut. Two live tracks, a demo, and a B-side -- it's a solid little sampling of their music, and a little gem for the collector of all things Stars.

It opens with "My Radio," which opens with what sounds like a sitar, but quickly swallows itself into a sparkly little drum-synth pop song. "It's hard to remember days/Mornings lost in a chronic haze/Breath is fast and the trains are slow/I barely feel it though," Torquil Campbell murmurs. "That crimson dress too thin/All winter up her woods/I touched it, it felt good..."

It follows up with a mellow electropoppy cover of the Smiths' "This Charming Man," demo of "When" -- very funk-techno, with a dancey beat. It's a very basic song: the guy wants the girl back, and doesn't have the strength to stay broken up because of his love for her. "Tried to do the friend thing/And ended up sending/My last goodbye/Through Wednesdays mail/But my heart's so frail/That by Thursday, I wrote again..."

Then comes the two live tracks, which are well produced enough that only a slight echo betrays them: the mellow "On Peak Hill" and vaguely ominous "Going Going Gone," apparently with Emily Haines crooning, "Love's just another rhyme." And the EP ends with the beautiful "Theme From the Stars," a delicate piano ballad shrouded in synth.

The Stars don't really sound like this anymore -- they're more acoustic in recent albums, as opposed to the electropoppy sound of this EP and the following "Nightsongs." But though they were only starting out in this EP, they turned out some pretty good music, with solid lyrics and instrumentation.

The instrumentation was pretty bare-bones at the time, since there were only two regular band members at the time-- mostly it's swirling poppy synth and some drum machines, but they weave in some delicate piano and acoustic guitar in the last song. In fact, that last song is what really elevates the EP from "good" to "excellent" -- it's a truly exquisite little song.

And Torquil Campbell writes unashamedly sensual lyrics -- the colour of a dress, the starlight during a kiss, desolate hills, and the devastating pain of finding out that your love has found someone else. "He speaks in a voice I know/Sounds like sound when the tide is low/We kiss to the voice each night/Bathed in pale reactor light..."

"A Lot of Little Lies For the Sake Of One Big Truth" is a big name for a little EP, bu a solid one that shows the Stars' skills at the very start of their careers.

If you've got "Nightsongs", then you've got the first two tracks already. The next three are different versions of songs from that album. But it's the last song, "Theme From the Stars" that really makes this thing worthwhile. It's still the best song they've written, and unavailable elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

4 out of 5 stars Reaching for a different sound.......2007-06-30

This was amazing music then... and now. This was a short-lived and overlooked ensemble. I saw them live while a student at Syracuse University and the power of the music was amazing... that transfers well to this recording. John is trying to find a new sound, while relating to his past accomplishments. The two tribute tunes to his mentor-- "Dark Prince" and "Miles Davis"-- are giving a nod to his tenure with the master, and the writing evokes Jack Johnson days, but with a current twist. Fernando Saunders was a fantastic choice to succeed Ralph Armstrong and Tony Smith has to be one of the most underrated drummers (where are you now, bud?)and was also a fantastic successor to Cobham and Walden-- a more jazz and funk rooted stylist who had monster chops and his own sound. Speaking of sound, the recording is not separated nor mixed well and the overall effect suffers: the drums get lost, but those of us who are drummers can hear what Tony is doing-- some of the polyrhythmic patterns represent the most innovative level of playing in the "fusion" realm. Watching it live gave me an appreciation of what Tony was pulling off; this recording is the only documentation of his efforts. Unfortunately, what also doesn't help is how loud Alyrio Lima is in the mix, thus confusing Tony's percussive efforts (enough with the sleigh bells, ok, Alyrio??!! They drown out the nuances in the compositions.)

Each of the tunes is attempting to play with the textures, some of the synth work is very distinctive and I've never heard anything like it since. Overall, the writing is great, "Love and Understanding" notwithstanding (pun intended and necessary-- this tune is pandering to pop at its worst... guess they were trying to get some airplay with that one... whew!).

The set winds up with McL actually getting political-- "The Unknown Dissident" (with a nice alto cameo by then-NY Session grandmaster David Sanborn) has a message behind the stated theme: the injustice in the world when those who dissent with the popular mindset are abused (and in this case, shot) for their beliefs. It is a rare nod to the notion of freedom, something that McL has never gotten across in this way before or since, but something essential to his art, and the work of every true artist in any medium.

This effort is to be applauded for its different tack... but the group had no commercial potential and didn't make it through the year. Before long, John was moving in yet another direction.

Album Description

This three volume compilation is tribute to the genius of three uniquely talented men--a philosopher, a composer, and a pianist-musicologist. These works began with the philosophical searchings of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff, an Armenian intellectual at the turn of the 20th century. His homeland was the crossroad for the diverse cultures that ringed the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. His fascination with the human spirit and his searching for the truth took him on vast journeys through India, Tibet and China. A keen observer, Gurdjieff, began to accumulate bits and pieces of musical traditions. These he combined with his provocatively inspired visions as a universal symbol of his philosophical beliefs. Gurdjieff, however, did not have the musical ability to transform his abstractions into reality. Fortunately, one of his disciples was a gifted and successful composer in St. Petersburg, Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann, whom he met in 1917. As a fellow searcher for the truth, de Hartmann was eager to transform the raw musical utterances of Gurdjieff into sophisticated piano compositions. Those scores, sadly, were left in a state of disarray in the estate of de Hartmann. Decades later, musicologist, professor, and pianist Cecil Lytle, became the final element of the equation. In the mid 1980s, he and a team of researchers began a three year quest, scrupulously studying the scattered files of de Hartmann's scores, assembling the first truly accurate arrangements of the Gurdjieff/de Hartmann legacy. A man in touch with the philosophical, as well, as the musical nature of the works, Lytle performs them with deep emotion and unsurpassed skill. The three volumes vary in their nature. Seekers of the Truth presents the reflective, ceremonial music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann's majestic suites. Reading of a Sacred Book contains some of their dance and character pieces of a more lively nature. Words for a Hymn to the Sun completes the trilogy with the final works of the great spiritual teacher, Georges Gurdjieff. Truly, these dramatic piano performances serve as the highest praise to three remarkable individuals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-03-15

I have listened to a lot of music, but this one has something that goes beyond music, difficult to explain in words, bringing a state of inner peace and liveness.

5 out of 5 stars The first volume of my favorite "Gurdjieff" set........2005-05-28

Not many years ago, it was difficult to find many recordings of this music. Now one may find several "complete" sets of this music by Gurdjieff/DeHartmann as well as many single disc recordings of selected pieces.

This set, by Cecil Lytle, is one of the first "compete" sets. Lytle plays the "Janus Edition" of these works, which were originally prepared and superivsed for private distribution by DeHartmann himself.

I have several "complete sets" of the Gurdjieff/DeHartmann music, and this is the one that I listen to most often. The other "complete" set (some might say more complete) can be found in the "classical" section of amazon.com; this other set follows the new "Schott Music" edition, the only sheet music readily available. While this Cecil Lytle set is by far my favorite, I also highly recommend the "other" complete set on the Wergo label, usually found under the "classical" music department.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Stuff.......2000-07-31

Listen it with your heart and let your "self" to flying.

5 out of 5 stars Transforming Music.......1999-12-11

In the mid 1980's, I was seeking to align my outward life with my inner most desires and longings. My wife and I were reconstructing our marriage based upon truthful living and sharing. Some nights we would listen to the radio program Hearts of Space. This program presented alternative comtempletive music, mostly electronic but sometimes we would hear a magical transforming work. In 1986, we heard Seekers of the Truth. It spoke to both of us, and literally played a part in our healing process. Even to this day, this CD is a most treasured part of our music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Objective art; this is true music.......1998-08-24

Anyone interested in music which has the power to stimulate the emotions simply must listen to this disk. Gurdjieff's composition have a quality lacking im most modern works. This collection has the ability to arouse the same state of emotion in each listener. This is what sets this apart from the majority of compositions which move one subjectively. I would strongly suggest this to any student of music. The music on this disk was the result of his travels to remote countries at the turn of the century. This may very well be one of the last samples of "Objective Music" we will hear for genrations to come.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

3 out of 5 stars dissapointed.......2001-10-11

i'm really quite dissapointed in this cd. i use to love strife, then stopped listening to them, then got back into hardcore. this cd is more metal than hardcore . . . its not bad, but its not as good as there other stuff. . . music style is similar to pantera now . . . i think thats a bad think, you may think its a good thing though.

5 out of 5 stars Strife 1 druggies 0.......1999-12-08

This album is defining a lot of so/cal hardcore and by no means is it typical since they have defined the boundaires themselves. one of the best sXe HC albums of all time. In the ranks of YOT, bold, judge

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written.......1999-09-02

I just want to say that this CD was one of my first introductions to hardcore music. It is a wonderful CD with the most uplifting and positive messages. I applaud Strife for their efforts to create a more socially-conscious and more caring world. Many people in the "hardcore" scene are far too judgemental of bands like Strife. If you take a look at the lyrics of most, they are really just trying to make a better world. I think it is noble. --Kelly Magovern

5 out of 5 stars this could be the best sXe cd ever.......1999-03-27

Strife are one of the best hardcore bands ever. Very angry music, but at the same time has positive lyrics that touch upon the subjects of sXe and staying true. I think this is one of the best straightedge albums of all time. I personally like this at much as "in this defiance" and that has to be pretty good! The album has a nice mix of aggressiveness with melodic biohazard type slower parts mixed in. I really like this album

1 out of 5 stars XX..X?.......1998-06-25

this record is a must have for all fans of bad generic hardcore, and judging by the hardcore scene today, there are legions.. lyrics about sxe and getting through tough times, fast drumming giving way to breakdowns and TONS i mean TONS of singalong chorus vocals. yet another reason to not support victory

4 out of 5 stars The music is lovely.......2004-09-16

I heard this cd in a coffee house some time ago and enjoyed it so much, I asked the waitress the name of the artist. This is the first music of this type I've purchased and when I read the reviews, I hesitated on chosing this particular cd but finally bought it remembering how much I enjoyed it that day. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. Also bought Mystical Garden which I'm enjoying as well.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for ethnic music lovers.......2003-03-02

I think people usually buy an album for only one or two hit pieces but not this one. You'll find 10 perfect examples of Turkish culture. "I love you" is a very good example of Turkish Art Music, "wildflower" is folk music from central Anatolia, "Ara'ya" will take you to highlands at eastern Anatolia, "Manhem", "One Truth" and "Sufi" will take you to another world of sufism with incredible sound of ney; with "Istanbul" you'll go shopping at covered bazaar and have a boat trip on the goldern horn.

take this trip to Turkey...

5 out of 5 stars enchanting.......2003-01-24

Turkish instruments have always added an extraordinary spirit to the world music. O.F. Tekbilek is one of the most powerful performers to spread this gift around.
Especially track 1 and 2 are fascinating.I highly recommend this album to the ones who enjoy listening enstrumentally rich musical works.

4 out of 5 stars I Love You.......2002-11-17

Basically track number 2 gets 5 stars & the rest 3 .... so it's a 4 star average cos that 1 track is so-o-o special ....once in a while, a piece of music hits you as an offering...almost spiritual in its throbbing sincerity & quiet simplicity ....a recommendation for those who like the Kanoon instrument ... which I love.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2001-02-12

I had bought "Buddha Bar II" by Claude Challe..and at that album one track took my attention most...That was "I Love You".......and then ý got to know Tekbilek more..This musician is really talented..In this album of his especially "I Love You" is fantastic..it has no peer in any kind of new age music...
