Daby Balde is one of Senegals best-kept musical secrets, long celebrated at home and now exploding on to the international scene. His stunning arrangements are based on his Fula traditions from the south of the country and feature the fiddle, accordion and flute alongside the more familiar West African sounds of the kora, acoustic guitar and percussion. With strikingly rich and beautiful melodies, captivating vocals and a repertoire that ranges from euphoric to melancholic, Daby Balde is a West African star on the rise.

Daby Balde.......2006-09-01
My favorite Senegalese music!.......2006-01-29
I suppose that's all rather irrelevant because Daby's music is different from the typical Senegalese upbeat tempo. The first time I heard Daby, I think it was the song Mamadiyel, I liked it immediately. It's not necessarily slower, but it's more... elegant than other Senegalese music. It's maybe a bit softer, less bouncy. The lyrics are also meaningful, which is always a plus, although mostly in Pulaar or Wolof.
It's also nice to have some southern Senegal represented on the international scene. Daby is from Kolda, south of the Gambia, whereas the other big names hail from the north (Youssou N'Dour is from Dakar and Baaba Maal is from northern Fouta) so it's about time the beautiful southern region of Kolda enjoys some attention by way of a talented musician.
I highly recommend the CD.
