Too often, the brilliance and popularity of bossa nova by its creators João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim have overshadowed contemporary developments in Brazilian music. This excellent CD by guitarist-vocalist-composer Márcio Faraco should bring listeners up to date on what's happening in that festive and folkloric country. Faraco, born in Algrete in southern Brazil and based in France, sings in the whispering canto faldo/spoken-song style of Gilberto, with the influences of Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso. In settings ranging from solo guitar and voice to ensembles with horns and strings coarranged by the underrated keyboardist-arranger Wagner Tiso, Faraco serves up a spicy sonic soup full of Brazil's Indian, European, and African flavors. The midtempo title track is an easygoing duet with Chico Buarque, and the haunting "Baile de Mascaras" features African percussionist Doudou N'Diaye Rose, while "Virtine Carioca" displays a zesty, Wes Montgomery-like jazz-guitar line. All told, Marcio Faraco's lovely CD shows us what the bossa nova will sound like in the 21st century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

The Rise of Brazil's Musical Identity

The first decades of the twentieth century fostered an important transformation in Brazil. According to Heitor Villa-Lobos' biographer Simon Wright, there existed "an increasingly volatile artistic climate...which saw to it that the old, monarchical snobbery surrounding serious music was broken down and destroyed by a movement flagrantly demanding change. Of this movement, Villa-Lobos became the vanguard."

Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1887. Already playing guitar with the street musicians of Rio while in his teens, Villa-Lobos portrayed his music education this way: "My first book was the map of Brazil, the Brazil that I trudged, city by city, state by state, forest by forest, searching the soul of the land." These experiences would greatly influence the development of the foremost, authentically Brazilian composer outside the realm of popular music.

Francisco Mignone, the son of newly arrived Italian immigrants, was born in São Paolo in 1897, a decade after Villa-Lobos, and like him, began performing popular music while in his teens. Although Mignone wrote numerous popular songs using a pseudonym, his study of composition in the European musical tradition in both Brazil and Europe led him to write "serious" music in the European style until the 1930's.

While Mignone was studying in Europe, the "Week of Modern Art" of 1922 took place in São Paulo. Part of the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Brazilian independence, the goal was to further the development of a Brazilian cultural identity. The Brazilian writer and ethnomusicologist, Mario de Andrade, underscored this new thinking: "The current historical criterion of Brazilian Music is that of a musical manifestation, which…reflects the musical characteristics of our race. Where are these characteristics? In popular music." Villa-Lobos was seen as the composer best representing the true Brazilian voice in modern music. Poet Ronald de Carvalho, proclaimed: "The music of Villa-Lobos is one of the most perfect expressions of our culture. In it quivers the flame of our race, what is most beautiful and original in the Brazilian race."

After Mignone's return in 1929, he resumed his long friendship with Mario Andrade. Profoundly influenced by Andrade, Mignone came to embrace Brazilian nationalism. Although the form of his Concertino for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra written in 1957 is traditional, the themes are clearly Brazilian in character. The first movement is a slow modinha or love song, and the rondo theme of the fast second movement is a carioca. Mignone wrote this showpiece for the virtuoso French bassoonist Noël Devos, who had immigrated to Rio in the 1950's.

The Aria movement from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, written by Villa-Lobos in 1938, is also a modinha in the popular Brazilian style. Scored for soprano and ensemble of cellos, Villa-Lobos later adapted it for soprano and guitar. In the version heard here, the bassoon sings the soulful soprano line. In the original, the outer sections have no words and are sung as a vocalise. Only in the middle section are there verses, written in a declamatory style. The text, by Ruth Valadares Correa, describes a midnight scene: the moon "glorifying the evening like a beauteous maiden… while sky and earth, yea, nature with applause salute her…waking the soul and constraining hearts to cruel tears and bitter dejection."

The Ciranda das Sete Notas (Round Dance of Seven Notes) for bassoon and strings, an original piece by Villa-Lobos written in 1933, was inspired by the ciranda, a children's round dance. Although Villa-Lobos often avoided using traditional forms found in European music, this piece is organized in four sections, played with little or no pause. The opening section, which should sound almost improvised, is followed by a scherzo complete with a haunting trio. An interlude reminiscent of the opening of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring then leads

    Album Description

This first recording from bassoonist Jeff Keesecker contains works that are rarely, if at all, heard on CD. The sonata from American composer Alvin Etler is familiar to bassoonists as a standard in the repertoire. The Jose Siqueira Etudes will be a welcome introduction to most listeners. It shows the colorful variety and rich textures, sprinkled with the folk traditions of his native Brazil, in Siqueira's writing. Heitor Villa-Lobos's well known Ciranda das sete notas is offered in his arrangement for bassoon and piano. These works of Etler, Siqueira, and Villa-Lobos are infused with dynamic energy and depth through the pianistic talents of Helene Grimaud. The Rhapsody for solo bassoon by Canadian Willson Osborne will also be familiar to those listeners who know the bassoon repertory, presented here as a sentimental addition to this set. The Three Chorinhos are little Brazilian treasures not normally heard performed on the bassoon. They are given new life at the hands of guitarist Welson Tremura, whose playing conjures all the sounds and rhythms of an orchestra, with the underlying foundation provided by Nathan Stowell on the pandeiro.

This is truly a breathtaking compendium for anyone who loves any music, not just the bassoon and piano. It is the bassoon at its most sublime, and Helene Grimaud's accompaniment is amazingly rich and perfectly matched to Jeff Keesecker's bassoon "voice" and technical flow. A class act all the way, from the handsome album cover photo of this attractive pair of musicians, to the attractive musicianship they present in the recordings.

5 stars for each of his 3 albums. Why this guy is not better known in the USA, and even Brazil! amazes me. Maybe it's a lack of a major label. Maybe it's the style of music is not popular any more. See my reviews on his other two CD's. This, his first album is equal to the other two - if only slightly less "clean" recording quality. And I'm nitpicking here as I'm a finicky audiophile.

5 out of 5 stars Marcio Faraco is a fresh musical wave from Brazil via France.......2005-02-28

CIRANDA, Marcio Faraco's first album is lyrical, rhythmic, and beautiful. His is a sound that is fresh, true to his roots, yet unique. Faraco is no slick sounding Bossa-Nova-come-lately. He writes his own material and arranges his songs in a compellingly melodic fashion. I do not speak Portuguese, but it doesn't matter -- the words and music convey the essence regardless. This cd and his second effort, INTERIOR, are consistently played in my house. Marcio Faraco's third cd, Com Tradiçào, is due out, in France only at this point, at the end of February 2005 on the Emarcy label. I will buy it from Amazon.fr (France) because if it is anywhere near his first two releases, it will be worth hearing again & again.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant weave of pensively colored sound.......2004-07-10

Marcio Faraco is far less well-known than he should be. I don't mind that so much, since I prefer to find original music for myself that nobody in my circle of influence has encountered previously. However, I think this guy deserves to have more people know about his existence. I was fortunate enough to be browsing through foreign music selections at a used CD shop near my home and I happened upon this disc. I listened to bits of the songs there in the store and instantly purchased it. It's an album that I play for everybody I know, and I have had nothing but positive response to it. Each song is expertly crafted and evokes beautiful thoughts and memories. This is excellent daydream music, even if you're not a natural daydreamer. A classic album.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2002-04-09

In the days of prefabed pop music, it is good to see there are some real singer songwriters still around creating greaat music, such as Marcio Faraco. When I first hears this CD, I felt his songs leaped from the speakers and grabbed me as the lister. I would have to say I hear about one or two CD's a year which sound "fresh" and this is definitely one of them! Definitely buy this CD!

4 out of 5 stars A talented vocalist from Brazil.......2001-08-18

Marcio Faraco's impressive vocal performances really distinguish "Ciranda." This Brazilian performer's voice is hypnotic and ethereally beautiful. The rhythms of these songs are generally mellow, with touches of playfulness. Although there weren't any songs that particularly stood out from the pack for me, the CD as a whole is definitely worth listening too.

I'd rate it 10 stars and above!!
This is one of the most bestest albums I ever heard! Márcio is a genius who plays as if it was a simple stuff. His chords are delicately put together, his themes are simple but very impressively explored. He counts on the "luxurious help" (não dá pra traduzir "auxílio luxuoso" de maneira compreensível! Só em Português mesmo! Sorry!) of people like Chico Buarque on the tilte track, and each of the subsequent tracks keep some flavours of Caetano Veloso, Arto Lindsay, Cesar Costa Filho and other cute musicians. Although he comes from Brasilia, his music sounds like "mineira". His producer, Wagner Tiso, is a monster who needs no more comments. The resulting album could not be different! 8^)
