5 out of 5 stars Atmospheres: Scottish Celtic Bagpipes.......2006-05-30

I greatly enjoyed this CD. As others have observed this CD has bagpipes played along with other instruments, I don't have a problem with that. My only complaint would be that at times the pipes sound as if they are "canned."

5 out of 5 stars Shadow's Word - Atmospheres: Scottish Celtic Bagpipes.......2005-08-26

If you are a fan of bagpipes then this CD is definately for you. This consists of wonderful traditional celtic songs and can sooth you instantaniously as you listen to the wonderful performance provided on this CD. This is quite a great CD and I would recommend it to very many people.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Crabtree is a great piper!.......2004-02-18

This is a very relaxing CD. Rob Crabtree has done another great job at recording his piping skills. The additional insturments flow nicely with the tunes preformed. If your looking for Pipes and Drums (Pipe Band Music) this is not for you. If your looking for a flawless solo piper, Bingo, get this CD! Good set of traditional tunes, but Amazing Grace could have been left off. It's on almost every piping CD. Great ending tune "Going Home".

3 out of 5 stars Not For a True Scot!.......2001-08-31

Don't buy this CD if the thought of hearing traditional bagpipe melodies accompanied by piano and guitar makes you cringe! Not much of this CD is pure pipes, or even pipes and drums for that matter. This CD might be for you, though, if you don't mind the sound of other instruments with the pipes. Some of the selections are hard to find anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.........2001-05-12

VERY MOVING., VERY SCOT The Danny Boy is not the same tune as we in USA know, but done in true scot style., Very nice listening., I will order again for my Library more of Pipes/drums/marches/.,This CDhas no marches, just good listening;

5 out of 5 stars Wish I was there.......2007-08-02

If you've ever been to Scotland or are a fan of the country/music, this will take you back and have you crying. It's very moving and melodic, yet uplifting. It's a wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great pipes.......2007-04-05

Very well done, Amazing Grace is fantastic. All in all a fine pipes album.

2 out of 5 stars Two thumbs doon.......2006-03-21

Ach! T'were pipin' music I were wantin', not ELO does "Rebel Piper". I mean, disco bagpipes? Good lord. Yes, the cheap-hotel-lounge-rock-band backups were grim indeed; the full orchestra numbers weren't much better. In fact, the only reason I didn't give this one star was because a (very) few of the selections weren't TOO bad.

Unless you want Highland/Second-rate Hollywood fusion, then avoid this gobbler at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral - Pipes and Drums.......2006-03-21

I like it, up lifting, and exciting music. Dont like two of the tracks much with horns and band, but thats ok.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2005-04-19

The tracks that are worth listening to on this CD are done far better on their more recent CD, "Parallel Tracks." Why they bothered with arranging the Titanic theme is beyond me... Not a bad CD, but they've done better.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best cd I've ever received........2007-01-16

I purchased Scotland's Great Highland Bagpipes at Christmas for my husband who is of Scottish descent and the other day he walked into the living room with this cd in hand and proclaimed that this was ". . . probably the best cd he had ever received." His father was a highlander in West Virginia and California and I took that into consideration when choosing a cd from your list. We would recommend it to anyone who loves the sound of real bagpipes and the music that they are so known for.

4 out of 5 stars Missing one gem "Time will cure me".......2006-01-14

Apart from missing the best song they ever recorded (Time will cure me) it's a brilliant CD of trad Irish folk music.
Music to relax and enjoy on a Sunday afternoon or in the car on a weekend drive.

5 out of 5 stars One of my desert island discs.......2004-02-09

I simply never tire of this album. I wore out my vinyl copy; now I'll wear out the CD, if that's possible. Trad Irish music just doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Erin Go Braugh!.......2002-02-11

What a brilliant collection! Sure to keep you singing and dancing with a bit 'o blarney in your heart! 5 clovers for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Just the best.......2001-04-01

This CD is worthy of being in any collection of any one who likes to listen to Irish music. The fabulous instrument playing and the range and type of music Planxty have put on this album makes it a must for listening to. I have never tired of it since I bought it back in 89.

5 out of 5 stars Still brilliant after all these years.......2000-10-06

I recently heard Raggle Taggle Gypsy on the radio and remembered how I loved this record when it first came out in the 70s. I still have the old vinyl record somewhere in storage (probably unplayable)and I try to listen to new music rather than buying old things again as CDs but this is one exception. It's still one of the finest collections of Irish music ever put together and has not dated at all! If anything it sounds even stronger now compared to much of the newer stuff coming out of Ireland. That segue from 'RTG' into to 'Tabhair..' is magnificent, leaves me exhilirated every time. Oh.. and I've always wanted to thank Planxty for the highest scoring Scrabble word I ever managed to make!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......1999-10-20

I do not consider myself an expert on traditional Scottish music, but I do know what I like --and I love this album (and the Tannies!) It is one of my all-time favorites of any genre. Everytime I play it, I am blown away. And I play it often! Some highlights (and there are lots of highlightable moments here): "Atholl Highlanders/Johnny Cope" -- these two Jacobite songs are melded perfectly and, to put it as best I can, they ROCK! Also, there's the devestating, "Jamie Raeburn's farewell" -- one of very few Tannies songs to feature that non-traditional Scottish instrument, the electric Guitar. Heart-wrentchingly emotional. But these are just two great moments in an overall awesome collection.

This CD is a great introductioin to both Traditional Scottish music and the Tannahill Weavers. If you have any interest in Scottish/Celtic music, piping, or just plain good music, then get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Great music!.......1999-10-16

I saw these guys play in Charlotte Oct. 13 of this year, and Wow!! They are great! I'm a student piper, so I was simply amazed at the skill and speed of Duncan, the piper. The songs are great, every one of the men in Tannahill Weavers is very talented and you can see they not only just sing, but they sing with emotion, love and meaning. You will not be disappointed in any of their CD's. I guarantee that if you are a lover of scottish/irish music the slightest bit, you will fall in love with this group's soulful music.

5 out of 5 stars Great folk music from the kings of the Highland pipes.......1998-11-04

When it comes to bagpipe music, the Tannies are far and wide my favorite. Superbly blended with the entourage of other traditional celtic instruments, these songs are truly inspiring and heartwarming. From the foot-thumping energy of Johhny Cope, to the powerful drama of Jamie Raeburn's Farewell, this album will surely raise your spirits and stir your soul! Forget all that new-age pseudo-celtic music that has flooded the market in recent years. If you want the best of traditional jigs and reels, this is where to find it. The _Best of_ is a perfect place for new listeners of the Tannies and new listeners of celtic music in general to start out. If this music doesn't have you out of your seat and dancing, you must be tied to the chair! Give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Best in Scottish folk.......2007-04-23

An excellent introduction to the Battlefield Band, one of if not the premier Scottish folk groups. You can't go wrong here. And for those Irish folk music fans out there who might be put off by a previous reviewers claim that there is a vast difference between the two folk traditions, please give this album a try. You'll find much that you will like. To begin with, the various incarnations of the Battlefield Band have included Irish players and singers (Pat Kilbride comes to mind), and have included many Irish tunes and songs. Scottish and Irish music, owing to deep geographical, cultural, and historical ties, have always cross pollinated each other. There is an enormous body of song and melody, usually under variant titles, that both cultures hold in common. There are certainly distinct regional and national differences, which keeps the music interesting and vibrant, but even these do not produce any kind of hard and fast musical paradigm. The fiddle playing style of Donegal, for instance, is heavily influenced by the Scottish musical tradition, and embraces such manifestly Scottish musical forms as the strathspey and reel. Give Altan a listen to hear what I mean. Modern Scottish and Irish folk groups has done nothing if not accelerate this appreciation and assimilation of each others music. Try to find an album by any Celtic band you can think of that does not include at least some of both countries music. You'll discover that it is a difficult task. The place to start, of course, is with this album. Pick out the differences and similarities for yourself. It will be a rewarding process.

5 out of 5 stars Great retrospective of one of Scotland's most enduring traditional music groups.......2006-11-05

For those who know Battlefield Band, this is a wonderful compilation
of some of their best music. For those who do not know the band, this
is a fabulous introduction, not only to Battlefield Band themselves
but to Scottish traditional and traditional-style music. Battlefield
Band were pioneers in the use of the great highland bagpipe in
ensemble play and this compilation showcases the great pipers that
have played with the band over the years.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Scottish Folk - Nothing New for Long Time Fans.......2005-08-18

The Battlefield Band is one of the finest, and perhaps most authentic of the Scottish folk groups that is recording today.

Perhaps the initial reveiwer of this work, X-Man, does not understand that Battlefield Band is NOT an Irish group, and there is a vast, vast difference between Irish folk music and Scottish folk music. Not only are they from two different cultures, but the instruments and playing styles are completely different. To compare Battlefield Band to the Chieftans is like comparing a Porche Carerra and a Boxter - there maybe a superficial resemblance, but under the hood, the engines are completely different.

This collection is weak in a number of areas- favoring the instrumental pieces over the songs, and is missing some of my personal favorites, such as "The Snows of France & Holland," "I Am the Common Man," the haunting cover version of Sting's "We Work the Black Seam," as well as the anthem to Scottish liberty - "Montrose".

All in all, though - a good introduction to the group, but not worth buying if you've already got most of the discography - which can be said for any long-range retrospective album.

1 out of 5 stars What a bunch of FREAKS........2005-05-13

Traditional Irish folk music gets spazmolagized again.

I long for the days of the 1970's and 80's when De Dannan, Planxty, The Bothy Band, The Furey Brothers (aka The Buskers), Boys of the Lough, Wolfe Tones, Davy Arthur, Danny Doyle, Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, etc. blessed the world with the most beautiful of traditional Irish folk music in its purest form.

Anyone loony enough to have the unmitigated gall to refer to this pile of bandicoot barf and epileptic caterwauling as Irish music - much less even liking it - would have to be a freaking retard with an IQ of somewhere below -74 with a bib around their neck to catch the drool.

4 out of 5 stars Too short.......2004-01-24

A good compilation, but a better one would have been 2 CDs long (at least). Another flaw is the accompanying notes, in which the solo singers and instrumentalists for each track are not identified.

1 out of 5 stars Not Celtic Bagpipes.......2005-02-26

When I saw this title, I thought of Uilleann Pipes and the music of Davy Spillane, or perhaps a collection of something even more esoteric. Thinking that this would add a new dimension to my collection, I bought it without looking more closely. I should have read Don Robertson's review, as he nailed it. This is nothing more than another standard Scottish Highland Bagpipes recording, with a lie for a title. Caveat emptor!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2002-05-03

Top notch military and civilian bands playing standard bagpipe music. Nothing special, just the usuall things on most band recordings. Still, it's well done and for the price can't be beat if you don't have any other Highland Bagpipe recordings. One major beef I have, is in the title. The use of "Celtic" is way over done these days and doesn't give true credit to the fact that all of the tunes on this CD are played on Scottish Highland Bagpipes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scottish CD.......2006-10-05

Many consider this to be the Tannahill Weavers' finest album. I don't, I think Alchemy is the best (I am partial to the classic Irish Celtic sound). But this is simply the best Scotish folk album I have ever heard. The bagpipes are beauiful throughout and never overstated, the fiddles come into play as well.

I would buy Alchemy first, then this one. But be prepared, as this is a different sound from the Celtic sounds of Alchemy.

5 out of 5 stars The quiet strength of the Scots..........2006-02-18

I love many a Northern European and British Isle folk band, but this, although somewhat fresh to my ears believe it or not (they are a well established classic band), is an amazing pick! I bought it on a whim for my wife and me, as this is our musical meeting ground and it was cheap. We are both impressed by the classy power displayed on this recording - the melodies are beautiful, the harmonies sung are outstanding, and the musicianship is nearly faultless. This cd has a very useful insert that includes all lyrics and excellent track notes for all 14 great songs (53:50 min.). We will be getting more from The Weavers for sure, this inspires on many levels! Scotland forever....

5 out of 5 stars One of the groups finest albums.......1999-05-12

The album Capernaum is such an wonderful CD that includes both energetic songs as well as some beatiful ballads. This album has mostly songs with lyrics and others with great instumentals. This is a must have for anyone who likes Celtic music. It also won a lot of awards as well as Celtic album of the year.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's from The Tannahill Weavers.......1999-01-18

A great mixture of tunes and songs, mostly upbeat. The harmonies on _Capernaum_ and _The Carls o' Dysart_ make these two of my favorite songs on the CD. The instrumentals complement the feel of the songs, and create an enjoyable piece of listening. I recommend this one!

Album Description

The Wicked Tinkers' first album exploded onto the music scene in 1995. Undefinable, they created their own genre of traditional celtic tunes, similar to the old Gaelic roving pipe-and-drum bands, done with their own contemporary idiosynrasies. It is a blend of the ancient art of Highland bagpipes with the primitive, driving rhythms of drums.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Tinkers.......2007-02-04

I LOVE these guys! Celtic Rock has got to be the best music there is. The Wicked Tinkers can make a place come to life. So upbeat and dynamic, I have all their CDs and I have seen them live many, many times. This is a fun CD! Deva

1 out of 5 stars Music? Please..........2005-07-18

I have been attending scottish events for 7 years, and I always hear this band playing. They are great people, but their music is far from great. If you desire more musicality than loud abnoxious drumming... nay... bashing, check out the band Bad Haggis. If you liked the music on Braveheart, you will love them.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-05-24

I first encountered the Wicked Tinkers playing in a San Francisco alley. I was blown away by their primal drumbeat and screaming pipes and their enthusiasm was catching. I've always enjoyed Celtic sounds, but never heard anything quite like this.

As soon as I got home, I ordered this CD. I think it captures their sound very well. Its been a favorite ever since.

5 out of 5 stars Simply AMAZING!!.......2005-04-12

If you like bagpipes, these guys will absolutely blow you away. They use the pipes with other traditional Scots instruments and create there own specialized sound. It has a more rock beat, while retaining all the bagpipes. Simply great for exercising to!! I defy any Scots lass to listen to this and not want to get up and rock to the unique rhythm.

Wicked Tinkers? Oh, Aye!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome..........2003-05-31

If you love the pipes, these guys are going to blow your mind. Not the massed band sounds of many bagpipe CDs, these guys sound more like what you'd have heard at a gathering back in Scotland. Not just the bagpipes; there's the uillean pipes, the bodhran (drum) the iron horn, at least one anvil/hammer combo, and much more. Good fun.

The Tannahill Weavers make every day Scottish history come alive in "Cullen Bay". The wonderful variety of music along with GREAT program notes make this CD a very enjoyable listen.

Not having a sound card in my PC, I took a chance on this CD by just the name of the songs. I wasn't disappointed. The Tannehill Weavers are a great group. Am looking forward to hearing more from them!
