Raucous, rowdy, and rambunctious in the best possible light, Buckwheat's Zydeco Party presents nimble-fingered, showstopping accordionist and band-leader Buckwheat Zydeco pulling the listener in for a Louisiana-styled throw down. The rhythms are hot and crazy, the band is tight, and the party is an explosion of two-steps and R&B flavored melodies. Included are the regional hit "Ya-Ya," a fiery take on Zydeco granddaddy Clifton Chenier's "Hot Tamale Baby," and a mix of traditional and original tunes. Furthermore, the Rounder reissue comes with extensive liner notes detailing the Buckwheat Zydeco story as well as the potent impact of the genre on American culture. When high-energy celebration is the mood to invoke, Buckwheat's Zydeco Party is the right fit. --Paige La Grone

Just in time for summer barbecue season--this compilation was released two days after the Fourth of July--comes the ultimate Buckwheat Zydeco collection. From Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural's own label, Tomorrow Recordings (set up for the January 1999 reissue of the album Trouble), The Buckwheat Zydeco Story, unlike most artists' best-of collections, contains material from several different labels. The previous greatest-hits collection, Menagerie, streamlined the band's somewhat uneven material recorded for Island Records but didn't touch on the much finer earlier recordings made for Rounder and Black Top. The Buckwheat Zydeco Story does, even including the song "Skip to My Blues" from the children's album Choo Choo Boogaloo. There's also Buckwheat's collaboration with Eric Clapton, a tantalizingly upbeat version of "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" And, for completists who probably have all this stuff already anyway, there's an added bonus: a live track from the 1998 Edmonton Folk Festival. This collection's also an excellent introduction to Buckwheat Zydeco's music, and the perfect CD to spin at your next backyard beer-and-barbecue event. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
Warning: You Might Dance Your Knees Off.......2005-11-30
This disc is an excellent compilation of Stanley Dural's (aka Buckwheat Zydeco) work. The opening track "Zydeco Boogaloo" gets the party started off right and pretty soon my toe is tapping and the beat has before long worked its way up to my spine. After that, it's all she wrote and I'll be hoppin' around like a fool for the next hour. The disc is just about evenly split between Buckwheat originals, traditional tunes arranged by Buckwheat and covers of more contemporary tunes. The mix works to excellent effect.
Standout tunes include: "Zydeco Boogaloo", "Lache Pas La Patate", "Ma 'Tit Fille", "Hot Tamale Baby", "Make A Change", "What You Gonna Do", "Midnight Special" and "Trouble". This is not to say that the remaining tracks aren't good. I love to listen to the whole disc. Eric Clapton plays along on "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad", a tune he co-wrote with Bobby Whitlock and this version is really good, as is the cover of the Rolling Stone's "Beast Of Burden". Even the 8 minute version of "Hey Joe" works well. This is great stuff lovingly compiled. Buy this and before long, you'll be picking up the individual albums these tunes were culled from.

Great Zydeco Music from a Master.......2001-01-26
Buckwheat is a virtuoso on the accordian, but he also has a great voice. His backup band has just the right touches of horns and drums to fill out the jams and really make them a pleasure to listen to.
Great, fun and danceable alblum that features exceptional clean production touches. At times the pace of some songs becomes so frantic ("Zydeco Boogie" and "Tutti Frutti", for example) that you just start smiling and tapping your toes. It should compel even the most staid music listener to get up and dance.
I wholeheartedly endorse it. Go buy it!
