4 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2006-09-14

I am a big Toto fan and own everything they have ever done. Yet there is something about this album in particular that hooks me and is a very enjoyable listen.
While Going Home and Right Part of Me are vintage Toto and could have been included on any of their commercial releases, the other cuts have a diffeent, mature feel to them. Some touch on the reggae while others are nearly a swing beat. Either way, the lyrics and clearity of the recordings are top notch. it may be the variance between the tracks that makes this album so listenable. Tambu remains my favaorite with the recent Fallin In Between a close second, but XX is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner!.......2006-06-26

A real source of excitement for fans and an album full of pleasant surprises. The classic moments from the Kimball period are the Pink Floyd inspired Tale Of A Man, done during the Hydra sessions, the classic Goin Home from a brief 1989 reunion and Right Part Of Me, a heartfelt, (Christmas type feel) ballad recorded before he left in 1983. The Joseph Williams era is served well by Last Night which has a great drum/synth atmosphere. Love Is A Man's World almost sounds like I'll Supply The Love part 2. A true Disco classic in every sense of the word. Paich also delivers with the delightfully fruity, Calypso concoction which is Modern Eyes. An enjoyable hodge-podge of sounds and ideas which provide an invaluable insight into the TOTO world of quality control and creative processes. It's a pity the long awaited for box-set remains unreleased as we could all do with official versions of Joker's Back, Runaway, Snows Of Kilimanjaro etc...all not included here. I can't wait to see what extra material they have waiting in the wings!

4 out of 5 stars To The Memory of Jeff Porcaro.......2006-04-14

After the untimely departure of Jeff Porcaro to heaven in 1992, the band had hard time to regain their original vigor they had during 80s. Their 90s post Jeff Porcaro release with the exception of live materials and compilations are.

Tambu 1995: Best post-Porcaro release so far.
XX 1997: compilation and live from unreleased materials a nice one.
Mindfields 1999: Their truly comeback album.
Through The Looking Glass 2002: Covers of Great Classic Songs
Falling In Between 2006: I haven't yet heard of it but with fine feedbacks.

This release to me is their "goodbye" to the Jeff Porcaro by releasing unreleased Jeff works and begin the band's new life.
The Memory of Jeff had been hard to pass by.

Extensive liner notes comment on each song and on the reason of rejection was very amusing to read. Among them Going Home is a stellar and should have given the chance of thier regular albums. Liner note says it was for PAST TO PRESENT compilation but I feel the sounds belong to somewhere between Isolation and Fahrenheit sounding like Survivor and my top favorite from them.

Verdict: Toto fans' Essential
Rating: 86 out of 100. Substandard for Toto release but still enjoyable.
Recommedned for: Jeff Porcaro and Toto fans.

5 out of 5 stars Retour au source..........2003-10-25

Best : Goin' home, Tale of a Man, On The Run, Last Night.

4 out of 5 stars Fun collection for album fans of the band.......2002-01-02

This release is considered a "fans only" affair, and I agree with that for the most part. After all, some of the tracks are simply demos. Nonetheless, this is a great album for fans of the band who know more than the radio singles.

Certainly the average song on here is not quite as good as the average song on a regular Toto album. The band members themselves point this out in the linear notes of such tracks as "Mrs. Johnson", for which they encourage fans to e-mail in lyrics for the second verse. However, other tracks are truly stellar, such as the opener "Goin' Home". How did this fail to make a regular record?? The melody and chorus of this track rival many of Toto's fine hit songs. The band's whole career is basically covered here, from those 1977 demos right up into the '90s. I also like the inclusion of the live recordings at the end, culminating with "Africa". What an interesting version of such a legendary song.

I don't listen to this as much as I do most Toto albums, but it is still a great collection to own for "completion purposes". (I have every standard Toto release from the first one right up through 1999's "Mindfields".) Definitely a recommended purchase for long time fans of the band.

5 out of 5 stars The remixes are better than the old, outdated Axe sound........2003-05-16

I have listened to the Axe of old and the Axe of new. I can conclude that that there are only a couple of old versions that I prefer (and that is only because those songs haven't been remixed yet).

There are several advantages of the remixes over the originals:
        1. A new singer. Bob Harris brings the vocal range that Bobby Barth was lacking.
        2. Better vocal harmonies, which was the problem I had with the old axe. The out-of-key harmonies of Bobby Barth of the old Axe era was hard on my ears.
        3. An updated hard rock sound. The old Axe was good, but the sound is out of date by today's standards.

If you can't stand the outdated rock sound, but still want to know more about Axe, then I highly recommend purchasing this cd. Great songs such as "Rock & Roll Party", "Burn the City Down", and "Life's Just An Illusion" have been made better with an updated sound, making those songs a pleasure to listen to everytime. Don't miss out on "Twenty Years Volume 2," which includes more Axe greats remixed.

        3 out of 5 stars Axe-"Twenty Years From Home".......1999-12-14

It is definately a re-mix. But, these are still good versions of the songs. Someone else reviewed this CD, and said that there was a diferent singer on Rock And Roll Party In The Street. Bobby Barth wrote the song, He sang it on the original, and that's him singing it on this one!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad except for the remixes.......1999-03-14

The cd isn't to bad except for the remixes of the original songs. If they had used the original versions and then added the songs that the new singer sings, then it is not a bad cd, but don't expect the classic sounds of the original singer especially on songs like rock & roll party in the streets and eagles fly alone

2 out of 5 stars Remix of songs.......1999-03-14

If you want a remix of the songs, then this is what you will get. The songs, like "rock & roll party in the streets and eagles fly alone" aren't even close to the original versions, If you are looking for the original then I would not recommend this CD

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2003-04-23

These songs were re-recorded in 1997 with a new lead singer Bob Harris. The original lead singer Bobby Barth is NOT dead, as one reviewer stated. He's now singing back up vocals for the most part and of course playing lead guitar. Two of their original albums are now available on CD, Offering and Nemesis. This CD is very good but the originals with Bobby Barth on vocals are better.

3 out of 5 stars long lost great rock and roll.......2002-06-11

I love these songs. I do not like the re-recordings. I think the story of why goes like this: Original singer--Dead. Original master tapes--Lost. So, in order to get the music out, the band had to re do it. Not as good as the original, but it will do.

****This is me standing corrected. It was not Bobby Barth, but Mike Osbourne ( the other guitarist, I BELIEVE) who was killed. Either way, Death derailed a GREAT band.***********

            3 out of 5 stars Re-recordings but ok.......2001-11-06

Well, when I got the cd I was a lot dissapointed when I opened the case and read "ALL songs recorded march april may 1997". Why can't Ladies and Gentlemen of record labels re-release the original records on CDs? The inserts say that "were unable to work it out" Anyway, despite re-recordings the songs sound ok.

4 out of 5 stars Another Look At Old Friends.......2000-03-18

In "Twenty Years From Home", Axe has reunited and done a re-recording of some of the best material from their four albums, along with two tracks from their most recent release "Axe Five". On the first pass, I was a little disappointed in the new remix, as it seemed that the songs seemed to be missing the "hard edge" that were so much a part of their music. However, upon further listening, I find that the changes in the songs have, in most cases, added to their impact. For example, the new, two-part vocals in "Heat In The Streets" make the story much more apparent and the lyrics are much clearer than they were originally. I do miss the soaring, high-note guitar riffs that were so much a part of the "Nemesis" album, but "20 Years..." reflect the band's artistic growth.

"Twenty years..." is an excellent release from a group that has been missing in action for far too long. If the hard rock of the 80's is what you're looking for, this album is a must!

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Metal Sounds Great.......2000-03-11

Always rembered their hit "Rock-n-Roll Party In the Streets" but could never find it on CD. Well the guys in the band have come back and re-recorded thier stuff with a vengence. Don't let the fact that they're re-recording thier old songs scare you off. Most of the tracks are smoking and sound better than when they were orginally recorded. A pleasant surprise that includes some guitar driven songs like "Running the Gauntlet", "Burn the City Down", and "Heat in the Streets". If you liked 80's metal but not the hair or the glam, give this a shot. While not every song will grab your interest, there is enough here make this a worthwile purchase.
