Tributo

It's hard to imagine a CD that more succinctly sums up the complex rhythms and cross-cultural references of contemporary Brazilian music than Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions, but Tributo comes close. Confessions, the one solo record Suba released before his untimely passing in 1999, confirmed the musician as one of global groove's leading lights after a production career that included work on Bebel Gilberto's hugely successful Tanto Tempo. Tributo is a testament to Suba's original vision, a remarkably cohesive collection of live tracks, remixes, and newly recorded interpretations of his urbane, percussion-driven signature sound. Every track here smolders and burns with passion and fire, from collaborations with vocalists Cibelle Cavalli and Kaita B to new tracks from Boyz of Brazil and house producer Phil Asher, and remarkable remixes by Zero dB and Bigga Bush. In his lifetime, Suba tapped into and reprojected the teeming, throbbing street sounds of Sao Paulo, one of the world's largest and most densely populated cities. Even in death, his music plays on. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars Not Hector singing, but still a decent tribute.......2006-09-01

1st, let me address the review by "A music fan" below - he's wrong: Hector LaVoe DOES NOT sing on this album (it's impossible as he died in 1993)- it's a tribute album from a Columbian Salsa band - Los Titanes (now known as Titanez de La Salsa due to contractual issues) who have been around since '82 - a very good band, by the way - check their music out.

Willie Colon with Hector Lavoe singing was(is) my favorite Salsa band - these guys could really swing - especially on songs like "Timbalero", "Aguanile", "Juana Peña", (none of which are on this album) and countless others which are all considered classics. If you want to hear the real deal and see what set these guys apart from all other bands - get the early Willie Colon albums "El Malo", "La Gran Fuga", "El Juicio", "The Hustler", "Guisando", etc. as well as Hector's solo albums like "El Sabio" (produced by Willie) - you won't be disappointed.
As for the tribute album by Los Titanes - it's not bad as far as tributes as concerned, they're a good, tight band and Harold is definitely the better singer - the song selection could have been better as some of the true classics are not on this album. Overall, not a bad album. Get the originals and do a comparison - you'll see what I mean. Enjoy, nevertheless.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute.......2006-07-13

As one of the reviewers correctly points out, this is not Hector Lavoe singing. After all, this is a tribute. However, that does not mean this is a bad album. Quite the contrary.

I've never heard of the band before, it's called Los Titanes, but it is EXCELLENT. Not only do they imitate the original tracks with perfection, on some of them they even sound better than the real thing!

The songs are interpreted by two singers from Colombia, Harold Peláez (HP) and Saulo Sánchez (SS), as follows:

1. El Cantante (SS)
2. Juanito Alimana (SS)
3. Mi Gente Listen (SS)
4. Triste Y Vacia (HP)
5. El Todo Poderoso (HP)
6. De Que Tamaño (HP)
7. Periodico De Ayer (SS)
8. De Ti Depende (SS)
9. La Murga (HP)
10. Dejala Que Siga (SS)
11. El Dia De Suerte (HP)
12. Cheche Cole (HP)
13. Mosaico 'Homenaje A Hector Lavoe' (medley, both singers)

Let me make it clear, I think both are great singers. But as to "doing" Hector, Harold is the better one. It's not that Saulo is bad, it's just Harold is so good you'd swear you're listening to Hector. Nothing against Saulo, but I feel if Harold had done all the songs, this would have been an even more remarkable album.

Inexplicably, Songoro Cosongo is not included in this album. I am perplexed as to why.

All things considered, I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Hector Lavoe and Salsa in general.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Tribute.......2002-07-28

When I first ordered this cd I didn't think too much of it. As I heard the first song I thought it was actually Hector singing! The orchestra stayed true to his music as well as the singers! I believe if Hector was alive, he'd be proud of this tribute!

1 out of 5 stars Another Faux Lavoe recording.......2002-06-26

Ok, I have to admit that the music on this album is of a better quality and that is it, but this is NOT Lavoe! The vocalist here is attempting to imitate Lavoe's voice. I would rather have a singer using his own voice sing any Lavoe songs (example: Cheo Feliciano paid homage to Lavoe singing "Todo Tiene Su Final"without imitating Lavoe's voice in "Una Voz Mil Recuerdos", a great album).
Hector Lavoe had a tragic life. There will be many recordings out there that want to pay homage to this great singer. This album is NOT one that does a good job at it.
Spend your money wisely and buy the real Lavoe recordings!

5 out of 5 stars one to remenber.......2001-06-22

5 out of 5 stars Sublime Suba.......2007-05-08

This is one of the best remix CDs I've heard in a long time. A must-have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Suba's echoing soul.......2007-01-06

Suba died much to early and in a tragic manner(story has it he tried to save some music in his burning house rather than get out)leaving a void in a tragetory he had created but never fully achieved. His production work was innovative and top notch; his brief contribution to Brazilian-fusion-world-beat has set the standard for all who follow. The Serbian -born musicain /composers work on Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tiempo" and his own masterpiece "Sao Paulo Confessions" are discs that through their superlative qualities will be listened to for generations to come. This tribute CD is right up there with the aforementioned discs. If you haven't heard the others there is no problem with this being your starting point; however , starting with "Sao Paulo Confessions" than "Tanto Tiempo" will give you a better perspective of his artistry. There is not a dud on this disc; only degrees of excellence. There is a continuity and cohesive feel to the disc that is rare amongst a coming together of artists on one disc. Cibelle's "Seria, Amor de A'Aqua" is very catchy remake that sets the bar. Cibelle's other contributions are quite nice and sexy as in "Tantos Deseos." The JP and Suba duets "Futuro Primitivo I, II, III" are magnificent collaborations that if listened to back to back are amazing in their elaborate complex structure; the songs are spread throughout the disc but your I-Tunes can arrange them together. The live element of "Futuro Primitivo" enhances the give and take aspect of the percussion and electronic performance. The tribute version of Suba's "Na Neblina" takes on a completely different sound from the original on "Sao Paulo Confessions" but a worthwhile interpretation, although it is a bit spacey. If you liked the work of Suba than you will probably like this tribute. Try this bit of electronica but don't forget his original works too.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy tribute.......2006-09-12

Suba produced Bebel Gilberto's acclaimed album "Tanto Tempo",and did his own solo work "Sao Paulo Confessions" before his untimely passing in 1999.He was on the verge of the millenium;he had much potential."Tributo" is a worthy tribute to his work on "Sao Paulo Confessions".In some ways,it is superior to "Confessions" but also shows, tragically, how much talent was lost.

There are three brief live concert duets between Suba&Joao Parahyba called "Futuro Primitivo." One can understand the audience's enthusiasm.

Cibelle sings on two great tracks "Sereia"&"Tantos Desejos." It's no wonder Cibelle has succeeded in solo work.Zero dB reconstructs :Samba do Gringo Paulista" into a tribute to Brazil."Lagoa Pinheiros" is delightfully mysterious."Are you sleeping?" is perfect music for a '60s era "space age" lounge.Phil Asher's remix of "Voce Gusta" is jazzy. This album is perfect for those who enjoy Brazilian lounge music;this is perfect for chilling.

1 out of 5 stars Too Techno!.......2003-03-31

I was inspired to purchase this cd after loving Bebel Giberto's "Tanto Tempo", as Suba was credited for one of my favorite songs. However, for those who revel in the true Brazilian sounds of samba and bossa nova, Suba's sound is not what you are accustomed to. After listening to a few tracks I was bored with the repetitive techno sound. While there are a few interesting sounds here, give me real musicians and sensuous rhythmns over electronic sound!

5 out of 5 stars Most Excellent.......2006-07-16

Cure fan who sometimes tries to speak Spanish badly. Got this album on a whim from a used CD store.

IT WAS MOST EXCELLENT, and I have been well pleased. I've had this for years and it still makes me happy. I agree with all the reviewers who comment that the bands changed the songs, made them their own, but still paid homage in a delicious manner. Some of the songs are better than others, but listen to Just like Heaven...it is really, really good.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2005-07-29

This album is one of the greatest tributes ever done. While many tribrute albums go on to reinvent the song risking fame or one hit wonder, or you're left scratching your head of whether you want to buy the albume simply because it has one or 2 great songs on it, this CD will not leave any doubts. Sung in spanish and modernized it will leave you stunned. 5 stars, get this album because it's been discontinued!!

4 out of 5 stars worthwhile.......2003-11-29

Diverse, highly flavored versions of classic songs.

Robert Smith's rich, multi-textured music has always lent itself to other interpretations, and this compilation does it justice.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS GREAT SCHTUFF!!!.......2003-01-04

I have no idea how I came accross this disc, but the moment I did, I knew I had to own it. There was something about the whole concept of Latin bands covering The Cure that appealed to my sense of adventure. I was rewarded with an even better album than I could have imagined. I think this has got to be the best tribute album ever done. Most tribute colections have absolutely no imagination whatsoever. This beauty tops them all! From the potential hilarity of freaking people out when they realize what they're hearing to the delight of thinking that some of these just songs might just be better that the originals. But don't take that one comment wrong, this is no 'joke' album. Yes it definitely tickles the heck out of my funny bone as it has for most I've played it for, it's a serious look at a whole new interpretation of the music of The Cure and a 'tribute' to the high quality of the songs they wrote.

4 out of 5 stars cure en espanol! estoy en amor!!!.......2002-11-26

OK, so I admit, I know no Spanish beyond the standard 8th grade "Hola, que tal?" but that in no way inhibits me from enjoying this CD! Some of my favourite Cure songs are performed by some great Latin American artists, with music so beautiful and varried, it doesn't matter that I don't understand all of the lyrics! "Apart" (Seperado) sounds especially great, with haunting female Spanish lyrics... if you thought Robert's voice sounded good, give it a listen in a romance-language. Great for any Cure fan, especially (duh) those from a Spanish-language background.

This Cd is an amazing musical production with the best latin groups that sing great songs from Jose Jose that (most of the kids that were teenagers when this Cd came out) we grew up listening.

Each song has a high quality and a different version from the original. I highly recomend this!

5 out of 5 stars The best and most creative Jose Jose tribute.......2007-03-08

Bringing together the most talented rock bands from Mexico, "Tributo", is an album that any fan of Jose Jose should have. Every track is a creative spin on the classic hits of the legendary singer. I especially enjoyed Molotov's version of "Payaso".

4 out of 5 stars A Swell Idea, A Couple Gems.......2003-06-29

Moenia's electronic pop/rock version of "Vulcán" is wonderful, I can listen to that 50 times in a row without getting sick of it. Also Control Machete and Molotov make interesting contributions as does Maldita Vecindad. All in all there 5 or 6 songs I enjoy.
I do reccomend it overall.

4 out of 5 stars Los nuevos subditos del Principe.......2001-03-16

4 out of 5 stars Tributo a Jose Jose.......2001-02-28

Me encanto que tuvieran los artistas que cantan las canciones de Jose Jose. pero me gustaria que tambien tuvieran una seleccion de las letras de las canciones.

This is a great buy! Toquinho has always been a quitarist foremost but here he sings some of the classic Bossa Nova songs from the original greats such as Vinicius and Jobim.
He does a great job with his versions of the songs - in light of some of these songs being written for piano.
If you enjoy Bossa Nova then you must consider this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally released to the US market.......2004-03-17

I bought the original Mexican release from a pirate music stall in Mexico City in 2000. This album is a who's who of the then (1998) current Mexican Rock stars covering one of Mexico's mariachi singers. I have seen many of these bands live in concert and every time they cover "tradicional" music the crowd goes wild. Also look for tributes to Jose Alfredo Jimenez "XXX" and Los Tigres Del Norte "El Mas Grande Homenaje A Los Tigres Del Norte"
Each of the featured artists also have many albums of thier own and are very fun to listen to if you like the latin ska that is tempered with the accordian for a rich and textured sound. Also I recommend Celso Pina "Barrio Bravo" for another cumbia rock fusion with an older musical ledgend and the young up and comers

4 out of 5 stars tribute this en español.......2007-01-11

un buen cd en español para aquellos que les guste queen.

5 out of 5 stars Insanely Awesome.......2005-10-27

This Whole Cd Is Great, i have no idea of what some of the people are complaining about, its a tribute cd your supposed to improv on the songs and not sing them like queen The Molotov Version of B.R. is awesome its lyrics are fun and funny, Fobia And soda Stereo also do a great job, i love the cd, you should get this cd if you like queen but specially if you like spanish rock and your not a sensative wimp that will get offended with MOLOTOV lyrics cus they are the most original band on the Tribute!

5 out of 5 stars Look at the WHOLE picture people!.......2005-09-04

First of all I would like to say that making a Tribute to Queen is quite a bold and daring endeavor, however all the bands that participated in this one were up to the task, I know most people think the Molotov version of Bohemian Rhapsody is pure rubbish BUT you have to consider its Molotov and it is their particular style of music which by the way has set them as one of the most original contemporary Rock bands in Mexico (believe it or not I really like this version, quite cunning! you will specially enjoy it if you're fluent in Spanish as spoken in Mexico). A word of advice for all you Queen hardcore fans... If you're looking for superb quality that sticks to the original Queen style please don't try to find it in Tribute albums or even worse in Spanish Tribute Albums! Try grabbing any of the Greatest Hits Queen compilations out there (there are heaps!). I strongly recommend Aterciopelados' take on "Play the Game" (Juégale, Apuéstale), Soda Stereo's "Some Day, One Day" and Fobia's "Under Pressure" (Excellent!).

5 out of 5 stars A very professional tribute by talanted bands.......2004-04-19

THIS WAS NOT THE USUAL TRIBUTES FROM LATIN BANDS. YOU WILL FIND IN THIS CD EXCELLENT VERSIONS WITH VERY GOOD LYRICS (TRANSLATIONS) OF QUEENS GREATEST HITS... BEST SONGS SO FAR IN THIS CD:

02. ATERCIOPELADOS - Play the Game (Juegale, Apuestale)
07. SORAYA - Save Me (Salvame)
09. FITO PAEZ - All Dead, All Dead (Se Fue, se Fue)
11. FOBIA - Under Pressure (Presionando)

THE REST OF THE CD HAVE PRETTY GOOD SONGS EXCEPTING ONLY THIS TWO:

04. El GENERAL - We Will Rock You (Nosotros Te Conmoveremos)
08. MOLOTOV - Bohemian Rhapsody (Rap-Soda y Bohemia)
(DISASTROUS VERSIONS!)

EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE OF SPANISH BUT IF YOU ARE A TRULY FAN OF QUEEN... YOU MUST HAVE THIS CD! IS VEEEERY GOOD.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting translations..........2000-11-23

Another curious release, Queen songs performed entirely in Spanish! Why then is the one Queen song in which some lyrics were written in Spanish ("Las Palabras De Amor") not included?Since it is a beautiful language, the ballads here shine such as "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "Love of My Life", I can listen to these over and over. Then you have the crap. At first I thought the version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was fun. Now all I can think of is that if Korn of Limp Bizket (of however those idiots spell their name) sang in Spanish, THIS is how they'd do "Bo Rhap". Frightening!Since I know the lyrics by heart, I *can* sing along, regardless if it's in a foreign language.Simply, if you're a Spanish Queen fan, this is the album for you!

5 out of 5 stars Rage, version 2.0.......2007-03-27

An unexpectedly great tribute. Rage Against the Machine, in all its glory, plus the new talents and kicks of some very talented latino rockers. Rage deserves this great tribute, and all the tributing bands deserve a listen beyond these covers.

4 out of 5 stars slammin............2007-03-13

This is probably one of the best tributes out there, in authenticity and flavor it really packs a punch. I fairly enjoyed some of the later renditions, because Rage is such a slammin band this is a good mixture of the latino culture infused with hard metal and political messages. For anyone that enjoys the actual band, plus new twists and flavors.
