Album Description

Fed by a source that runs thick and fast, the best Mexican musicians consistently express the passion that has always fired the country's music. Live music is everywhere - at parties, concerts, festivals, births, deaths, marriages, on saints' days and in the media. The range of styles in Mexico is enormous and this album features a selection including son, ranchera, new son jarocho, Mexican rock, mariachi and big band. What these have in common is a great irreverence, a sense of humour and a passion for life and love that is not frightened of extremes. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Mexico offers a highly sought after introduction to the city sounds while tracing these back to the traditional music that gave birth to them.

Artists include: Astrid Hadad, Cafe Tacuba, Juan Reynoso, Eugenia Leon, Salon Victoria, Chuchumbe, Mariachi Reyes Del Aserradero and Los De Abajo

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and Eclectic Introduction to One of the World's Great Music Cultures.......2005-09-25

This is a fabulous and eclectic introduction to a musical culture, that, until I got this record, didn't know much about. You may hear some familiar Flamenco or "Buena Vista Social Club" type influences in many of the songs, but "El Nino Perdido" could well be classified as Prog Circus, and "Joder" sounds like the product of robotic composers influenced equally by free jazz and military drill songs. From the hypnotizing harp melody of "La Guacamaya" to the beautiful vocal harmonies and fingerstyle guitar of "La Juanita" to the trademark Mexican hyena laughing in "Que Puntada", this is a fun album full of surprises.

If you're like me and want to get past thinking of "world" music as a genre, and then past the notion that even the music of one country could pass for a genre any more than Appalachian Folk and Heavy Metal should be classifed together under "American Music," then listening to this may well be a mind-broadening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Top-flight anthology of little-known music.......2002-12-24

An outstanding compilation of a wide variety of popular and regional styles from across Mexico. This set examines both traditional and contemporary music, including a brilliant ska-banda mix by the popular "rock en espanol" band, Cafe Tacuba. Rancheras, corridos, boleros, indie rock and various stylistic fusions are represented, and even a few sones from Veracruz -- one of my favorite musical genres! If you are curious about the rich musical heritage of this large but often slighted nation, then check this collection out... It might open more than a few new musical doors!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!.......2007-01-17

The Rough Guide to World Music, Vol. 2 is a wonderful compilation of songs from around the world. I am so glad I added this to my collection. I actually purchased this for a cultural diversity fair we had at our hospital and it served perfectly as background music for the event. The variety of songs is great and they are each so unique and wonderful to listen to. I thoroughly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Pleasaure.......2000-10-12

Talk about diverse! This Rough Guide travels from Cuban son and the magnificent piano playing of Ruben Gonzalez to popular Indonesian songs and back again. One must have an open mind and broad tastes to be able to absorb the vastly divergent styles on this CD. However, each selection is superb on its own terms, and most of the music is danceable. If you are truly a connoisseur of world music, try this companion CD to volume two of the revised ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC.
