The Best Introduction into Turkish Classical music!.......2005-12-02

This album with its well-chosen musical pieces is the ideal introduction for the non-Turkish listener to the world of Turkish classical music (senat). The instruments used here, the orchestration and the virtiosity of the solo players playing taksims at the beginning of every piece are really fantastic features in this album!

A must-have for anyone who wants to know something about Turkish classical music as well as anyone interested in Middle Eastern classical music.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The music on this album is very good, unique, and has fascinating liner notes. One caveat: the music on the CD is newer than the cover would have you believe. Its all from the late Ottoman/early Republican period. Its not music that you would hear in Suleiman's court. Buy it anyway.

Haunting and beautiful.......2006-12-23

Kudsi Erguner is a major proponent of classical sufi music. This collection on Times Square captures beautifully recorded performances of haunting songs. I enjoy programming it on my weekly radio program, Caravan, on WSUM in Madison, Wis., along with its companion CD, Sharki: Love Songs from Istanbul, featuring Nesrin Sipahi.
