With any acoustic album an artist takes the risk of exposing weakness, but Marcelo D2 meets the challenge with a passionate performance. He proves undeniable skill as an MC, though any listeners without abilities in Portuguese might be frustrated. High points include the danceable "Sangue Bom," (though the appearance by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas adds nothing of value) and the pensive "1967". The low point is a duet with his son. It seems that even foreign rappers are not immune from teaming with a family member on a sappy, creatively low-rent song (think Eminem, Master P, etc). Anyone interested in the current Brasilian music scene should give this disc a try. Listen to it alfresco on a warm day and you will be treated to the experience of Rio in the winter of 2005.

Rita Lee eh simplesmente o som. A suavidade de sua voz, a criatividade de sua musica e o bom humor inteligente de suas letras a tornam nao apenas uma roqueira brasileira, mas uma referencia marcante da sonoridade musical de nosso pais nos anos 70 e 80. Este CD acustico eh magnifico, e mostra que reinventar a roda eh sempre salutar. Parabens Rita, cuja carreira eu acompanho desde 1975, quando ela lancou o fruto proibido. I grew up listening to Rita Lee.Me and Rita go way back.Back when her original "rock"band , the Tutti Frutti was then a hit among us kids.In general terms, I liked the CD, but like an old soccer player thar was once a great entretainer, she too "lost a step or two".Seems like she is following a trend, when back on the day, she WAS the trend.The "Acustico" CD has everything I used to like about Rita Lee, but, in a way, it is like she gave up on us,old school friends, in order to reach a larger public, I guess that is Ok, but I don't have to like it.What happened to the simple guitar,bass and drum sets?I guess if I didn't know Rita Lee and this was the first time I ever heard her, I might have liked it, but knowing her the way I do (did),I feel she gave up on her (ours)roots, and that's very sad.

This CD is the best that I've ever heard in my life. Rita Lee and Roberto de Carvalho are the best musicians, rockers, composers. Their work is unquestionably wonderful!! In this Cd you can enjoy the best of their career. Her lovely and perfect voice with His amazing arrangements improve their greatest lyrics. Once more you can see that Rita has really changed over the years, but just get better every CD !!!

THE Lenine release to buy.......2007-03-27

I first heard Lenine courtesy of a PBS special that aired ages back, featuring music from Lenine, Daude, Zelia Duncan, Cascabulho, and others. While I subsequently tracked down CD's from many of the artists featured, it's Lenine who I keep coming back to. His sound is something totally unique; it's very much rooted in Brazil, but transcends musical and national boundries at the same time.

He is also unique in that his sound evolves by leaps and bounds with each release. One upshot of that is that in challenging himself, he constantly challenges his audience as well. Past releases have cannibalized elements of samba, folk, funk, metal, and practically anything else that can be thrown into the blender. He's close in spirit to the Tropicalistas, though his sound takes their experiments very much to the next level.

The disc is full of surprises from start ("O Atirador," penned by Lulu Santos) to finish (Lenine's own hit "Jack Soul Brasileiro," which has cropped up on a few releases). The arrangements vary greatly from their original versions, but they always gain something over the originals. "Hoje eu Queiro Sair So" has more in common with Daude's later cover version than with Lenine's own original; "O Homem Dos Olhos de Raio X" abandons the future funk of the Living Color-backed original in favor of something still looser and more old-school sounding; "A Medida da Paixao" features a haunting guest appearance by Richard Bona.

I could list more great qualities of the individual tracks, but really, you're better off hearing the disc on your own and discovering something new for yourself, whether you're an old fan or not. Incidentally, if you fall into the latter category (ie. you're new to the artist), I'd recommend starting here rather than with the Six Degrees-issued Best Of. It's a good collection, but it will end up being redundant if you decide that you like Lenine's music--you'll end up wanting the back catalog. And on the strength of this set, I think that's a very strong possibility.

On the other hand, if you're a long-time fan, the CD is essential to trace Lenine's evolution, and just might be an indication of where he's headed next.

Incredible live album from Brazilian great.......2003-01-20

For those who don't know, Jorge Benjor has been making music for about 40 years now in Brazil. He started as a bossa nova star and within a few years developed his own style, a kind of hybrid of samba, funk and rock. He has not been very active in the past
few years with this being his first recording since 1997. This CD set is from the Brazilian version of "MTV Unplugged" and was recorded in January of 2002. The first half of the show features a reunion of Jorge's 70's band Admiral Jorge V. The second half features his current band, Banda Do Ze Pretinho. The bands are backed by an orchestra, which adds a very tasteful touch to many of the songs.
As for the music, it's incredible. The CD opens with "Jorge De Capodocia", a song about a man glad to be in the same army as Jorge because he knows that Jorge will protect him. It's a powerful statement on blind faith, but it's sung with such urgency that you feel maybe Jorge can protect you too. The CD features a lot of Jorge's great songs from the 60's and 70's, with only one modern song, the early 90's hit "W/Brazil". Jorge is such an amazing lyricist, no one on earth writes songs like him. The subjects of songs on the set include a man who'd rather chase dragons than beautiful princesses ("Roberto Corto Essa"), a guy who thinks he has the greatest job in the world because all he does is sell bananas ("O Vendedor De Bananas"), a widow's boyfriend, who the whole town wonders if he's up to the task ("O Namorado Da Viuva"), bugs and biology ("Spyro Gyro"), alchemy ("Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas"), and soccer players ("Umbabarauma" and "Filho Maravilha"). The set ends with "Taj Mahal", a song which Rod Stewart ripped off to provide the music for "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy". This set is so good that I think it's the greatest live album I've ever heard and it definitely would make my list of discs to take with me if I was stuck on a desert island. The arrangments are perfect and both bands are so tight, it's impossible to say which band is better. Five stars is really not enough for this disk. I could not more highly recommend it. There is a DVD available of the show in Brazil that will play in all regions and it's well worth seeing if you can find it.

The sweetest voice.......2005-10-13

Not exactly the best of Kid Abelha.......2004-07-20

Kid Abelha, with Paula Troller, George Israel and Bruno Fortunato, a very sucessful band in Brazil of pop/rock, in their new CD, in the well famous "acoustic" form. Their permomance was excellent, but this does not exactly apply to their selections of songs of their career. Where is "Pintura Intima", for example? I can say that 5 or 6 very good songs were put away favouring other songs, like "Brasil", a song made by George Israel and sang by Cazuza in the 80's, but never in a CD of Kid Abelha, and "Quero te Encontrar", sweet presentation of a hip hop song of Claudinho e Buchecha, but again, removing space that could be used to express the true soul of the history of the career's band.
A new song, "Nada Sei", however, was very well presented. Incredible song, very good words. And the presence of "Lagrimas and Chuva" and "Fixacao" high up the level of the CD, whose best song's perfomance, was, for me, "Como eu Quero".
The 19 songs among the CD are very good and very well peformed by the band, and Paula Troller's voice is in its best, but it could be, after all, even better. But who loves the band should have the CD. Even because more than 20 years of sucess are not for everyone.

La mejor banda de Brasil en version acustica.......2003-02-12

Los conocí en el año 1985 y desde ese momento me hice fanático de ellos a pesar de vivir en la Argentina.
Fue un placer escuchar temas de aquellos años como Lagrimas e chuva en esta version acustica. Sentir a Paula despues de tanto tiempo en esta version me puso la piel de gallina.
Muy bien cuidados todos los arreglos para esta seleccion de temas.
Optima la onda Police de temas como FixaÇao.
Delicados como siempre en Os Outros y Amanha é 23.
Es para sentarse, relajarse y disfrutar del show.
