It's always fascinating to read someone else's hit list and then compare it with your own. But when the compiler is British BBC radio presenter Charlie Gillett, there is not only the lure of an expert opinion, but curiosity about acts that have not yet found adherents across the pond. Basing his selections primarily on listener reaction, Gillett has created a reasonably objective time capsule of his year. Some of the bands, such as Senegal's Orchestre Baobab, Portuguese neo-fadista Mariza, and Kasse Mady from Mali, have made their mark in America. But others, such as Weird MC (UK/Nigeria,) Markschneider Kunst (Russia), and Eugenio Bennato (Italy), are less familiar. One reasonably consistent difference between the United Kingdom and the United States seems to be that American world music fanciers have a lower tolerance for pop fusion--after all, the Lambada was a joke in Peoria while it was still going big guns in Europe. --Christina Roden

Hedningarna ("Heathens") was and remains in the vanguard of the Nordic folk revival. Their sound incorporates droning fiddles, hurdy-gurdies, and plucked instruments of medieval vintage, plus Sami yoiks (an indigenous Scandinavian vocal style not unlike Native American chanting) and repetitive, alliterative Finnish folk verses sung by vehement, sharp-edged female voices. These are augmented by snare-led drum 'n' bass conceits, shimmering echoes of Philip Glass, demented electric guitar solos, and some of the most breathless, bouncy BPMs this side of a dangerously out-of-control pogo stick. The present compilation is derived from five recordings released over 14 years, during which the founding trio of Hallbus Totte Mattsson, Anders Norudde, and Björn Tollin was joined by a shifting roster of talented collaborators. A favorite with ravers at home and abroad, this Swedish/Finnish outfit adheres to a runic, fate-driven esthetic that is rendered incongruously catchy by a prevailing undercurrent of quiet wit and mordant humor. -- Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Nordic Roots with A Twist.......2004-04-30

Anyone interested in exploring the world of Scandinavian folk music should start here. This is the group, crafting quirky yet listenable new takes on pre-Medieval tunes, that led the Nordic Folk revival of the '90s with their use of ancient (and some homemade) instruments twisted together with modern arrangements and beats. Hurdy gurdys and fiddles sit alongside electric guitars and stellar production, creating a most unique sound.
And while the core trio of its original members are talented enough, what sends this band into even higher orbit is the one-two punch of its Finnish lead vocalists. You may not understand it but you can't help but be mesmerized by them.
My only complaint is that I am not a big fan of Joik singing (indigenous Finnish chanting style similar to Native American singing, provided here by guest vocalist Wimme), so the one or two tracks that feature it I skip. And why Mettsän Tytto wasn't included is beyond me -- this is one of the best tracks this band ever recorded.
These minor gripes aside, the disc as a whole is definitely an experience. A weird, angular, revelatory, time warp of an experience, but an experience nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars The equals of any big name in world music.......2003-11-25

This Swedish/Finnish band have a scratchy/droning sound. The instruments are raw/earthy, but so brilliantly made and played that you do not get the inaccuracy and uneveness of many traditional world-music instruments. They send electricity thru these, to add a heavy rock element which is evident in most of their albums. They have a keen sense of nature.Often the dark side of nature, but sensitive nevertheless.Their lyrics are often from the viewpoint of wolves, horses and wilderness humans. The female singers from Finland are beautifully uninhibited. In some songs they're expressive of childhood innocence, and in others they're wild and frenzied.
The only advantage this 'best of' has over an album, is the 'amount' of tracks. It is no more or less accessible than any of their albums containing the female vocalists ('Tra', 'Karelia Visa', 'Kaksi').(I'd have included the songs 'Metan Tytto' and 'Vargtimmen' -two of their catchiest, in my view).Tho, the varying of their 'heavy/soft' pieces is moreso than an album.(Aswell as some good re-mixes to add extra diversity)But, overall I don't feel a 'best of' was purposeful. But if u are sure you'll only want 1 Hedning' cd, this (having more tracks) might aswell be your choice.A dazzlingly good cd.Aquired taste, tho. They are weird.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

but this one is mostly hits. For the eclectic-minded, the range is wide and it's lured me into finding CD's I never would have sought otherwise. Isn't that what compilations are for, really?

5 out of 5 stars best world compilation i've heard!.......2004-02-27

It's extroardinarily difficult to put together a coherent mix of world music on one cd--I usually cringe at the idea of trying to do this. I've listened to many world compilations, but none of them flow as effortlessly from one country to another as this one does. There is definitely a little for everyone on these albums--the first album is more hip hop and techno infused, while the second is more rock/pop/folk. I love the second disc, but am not as crazy about the first--but you can't complain b/c of the price! While some of the music is more traditional, much of it is influenced by Western rock/pop/etc music. I'm mostly upset that I can't easily buy several of the cd's off of this album as they are not released in the US!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great.......2003-12-23

A well diversified selection. It's between pop and traditional. Most of them are not for dancing. Some of the songs are very catchy at the first time, but others take couple of times to get in to the rhythm. Good, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD with lots of great songs.......2003-12-22

I heard clips from this CD on NPR and decided to buy it. From the first time I listened to it I was excited. There were so many great songs from all over the world. An upbeat thread goes through the entire CD. I bought 5 more for friends and have bought a bunch of CDs from artists on the World 2003 CD. You won't be disappointed!! Hurry out and buy this today!

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for your half-dozen favorites.......2003-12-04

and let the rest of the 25 grow on you.
J'adore absolument Rebecca Malope, l'Orchestre Baobab, et Samira Sa'id. Shukran yaa Charlie, for your part in making this wonderful music available at such a bargain price.
All the songs are well-produced (not a given, in my experience),
and all the artists technically proficient. So whether the individual listener likes a particular song is gonna be a personal thing.

Straccio, rags.... sadly enough Stefani is just a beautiful face having only two tracks on this album that are worth listening to, Un giorno d'amore (or to listeners from France, Tu sauras me trouver, doesn't really translate at all but good attempt at cracking into the francophone market). The other song was Uno Straccio d'emozione, Rags of Emotions. Else than that the album is much like David Charvet, dull-drum pre-edited love lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars For fans only!.......2004-07-11

Well, I live in South America and I'm a fan of Eurovision Song Contest, so this CD is a perfect way to get the songs I liked, but yes, some of them are not that good. But having it is a way to experience music and musicians from different countries of Europe.

3 out of 5 stars You know what you are getting.......2003-07-17

This CD cannot be recommended to anyone who didn't see the Eurosong show. This CD is a complete release of all the entries, so here you will get all the songs you liked along with all the songs you didn't like. Personally I enjoy listening to about half of the songs (hence the three stars), while the other half is more often than not simply awful. The CD is wonderful for fans of the Eurovision, viewers who enjoyed most of the music on the show, and friends and family of the contestants. It is NOT an interesting CD for anyone who is unfamiliar with the Eurosong tradition and it certainly does not give a very good impression of the state of contemporary European pop music.

It does, however, include the track "Ne ver ne boisja" by t.A.T.u, which is not available anywhere else, and so this CD might be a worth-while investment if you're a die-hard t.A.T.u. fan.

      4 out of 5 stars Beautiful show.......2003-07-14

      Reviewer: Lisa from Latvia
I am from the country where this Eurovision contest took place, from Latvia. I was really surprised aaabout the beautiful song of Norway which had to win this year. I liked also Belgium song which reminded me Enigma and of course our latvian song "Hallo From Mars". It was extreemely good. I did not like the turkish song and I can not understand its 1-st place. Also russian Tatu song was of low quality. These girls have no voices but only big ambitions.
It is pity we can not see the beautiful show of this 2003 competition in CD.

3 out of 5 stars Europe is living a celebration indeed..........2003-06-15

The Eurovision song contest which takes place every year in spring is one of the favourite shows of the whole continent . It combines music , dancing and , in a certain level culture with the excitment of the voting process . Everyone though who listens to music frequently and knows all about modern rock , pop and alternative music will probably find a number of these tracks uninteresting and flat .

Indeed , song-entries by Britain , Sweden , Croatia , Germany , Slovenia , Cyprus and Latvia were all lively perfomed by various different artists dressed up in colourfull outfits yet on final analysis lacked decent hooks and any form of personallity . The songs which do stand out are ofcourse Turkey's powerfull and original " Everyway that i can " , Estonia's healthy britpop song " 80's coming back " and the sensual french ballad . Tatu's song is certaintly another plus of th cd . It's exactly the kind of song Eurovision needs in order to move on and reveal a more modern face . Austria's song is more of a joke than a proper melody while Belgium's entry is a welcome ethnic addition to the contest but not really anything special if you compare it to any track of a Dead Can Dance cd .

Eurovision though manages to gather for one night all europe countries together and all european families in front of the t.v . Maybe it's true that the songs work more as memories connected with that night in Riga rather than stand out as music propositions of their own yet that doesn't mean that many of them don't have the soul and the right elements to top the charts and be deeply loved by people all around the world . In the spirit of the contest i give 1 point to Malta , 2 points to Greece , 3 points to the Netherlands , 4 points to Spain , 5 points to Norway , 6 points to Portugal , 7 points to Russia , 8 points to Estonia , 10 points to France and 12 points to Turkey .

4 out of 5 stars Europe comes together in Riga Latvia for the 2003 Grand Prix.......2003-06-07

This is the CD of the songs that came up for competition in 2003's Eurovision song contest. I bought the CD after watching the competition on television, and so my perceptions of the musical acts are influenced by what I have seen as well as what I have heard. All in all, this collection is good, and it impressed me a whole lot more than the Eurovision 2002 competition.

My favourites of this collection are probably Estonia, with the song "Eighties Coming Back" by Ruffus (formerly Claire's Birthday) and Norway's "I'm Not Afraid to Move On" by Jostein Hasselgard. Belgium's entry - "Sanomi" by the group Urban Trad is a cool mixture of traditional and modern musical types with lyrics made up of an invented (or nonsense, however you look at it) language. Poland with "Keine Grenzen - Zadnych Granic" had one of the few non-love songs, this being one of idealism, sung in three languages, none of which were English (Polish, German, and Russian.) t.A.T.u. made their appearance, and came in a respectable third, even with them opting to sing in Russian. I can't say that their song was brilliant, but it wasn't terrible, and it probably had the best performance of the lot.

On the other side of the spectrum, the group representing the United Kingdom, Jemini, with "Cry Baby" is probably the weakest song of the group. This was an opinion that I think many others had, as the UK was the only competitor who finished the contest not having earned a single point. (They can't even blame that on Britain's recent politics.) Ukraine's Olexander Ponomaryov's "Hasta La Vista" can get annoying really fast, as it goes from melodramatic to fast pop, with the oh-so-catchy refrain of "Hasta La Vista baby, baby bye bye" repeating over and over. Austria's entry, Alf Poier's "Weil der Mensch Zaehlt" is said to be somewhat of an offbeat hit in Austria, but having heard it (even understanding German, but he's singing in a dialect) I still don't get it. Latvia's "Hello From Mars" performed by F.L.Y. left me wondering if I understand (continental) European English at all.

In the middle were a lot of fairly good stuff. Turkey's entry "Everyway That I Can" by Sertab Erener ended up winning the competition. Nicola's "Don't Break My Heart" may have a fairly weak line that it's resting on, but besides that, it's got an interesting sound. And for some cuteness, Karmen Stavec's "Nanana", the entry for Slovenia, is a great ender for the album, being a kind of bubble-gum tune that gets caught in one's head without doing too much damage.

I was glad, too, for the non-English songs, though they were in the minority.

Americans often look at the Eurovision song contest with disdain, considering it a great celebration of mediocre Europop. The Grand Prix is a fairly big deal over in Europe though, and it is nice to see the countries of Europe coming together and competing through the medium of music.

A friend of mine from Michigan gave me this CD and I LOVE IT. I listen to it over and over again. It's the perfect mix of world, rock, new age, all together. Not too sappy, not too hard, not too weird. I can't describe it but I love it. I hope this guy makes it big. I want more!!!
