5 out of 5 stars It's not "world music" it's Wasis Diop music........2003-05-18

One of the most interesting, beautiful, and satisfying records by ANYONE...EVER.

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 10 CDs.......2003-05-10

Listen to "everything" a couple of times - you will be hooked. An outstanding album.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, relaxing, very enjoyable!!.......2003-05-08

I heard of Wasis Diop when I saw the movie "The Thomas Corwn affair" and it was love at "first hear" from then. Toxu is a bright exmaple of Wasis is all made of. Perfect for a peaceful evening sitting on your patio with a cold one or great for the road. Strong african character and powerful vocals will just melt you! Believe me! Highly recommend to world music fans!! You wont go wrong with Toxu. My favorite tracks are "After dreaming" and of course "Everyhting" (TCA track!)...

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and then some!.......2002-06-30

I was turned on to Wasis Diop by the "Thomas Crown Affair" soundtrack, and found I couldn't quite get enough of "Everything (Is Never Quite Enough)".

"Toxu" is an album that deserves a slot in the collection of anyone looking for something different, noteworthy, and deserving of all its accolades. If that's what you're looking for, this is definitely it. So much so, I'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of "No Sant". Mr. Diop is one to keep following!

4 out of 5 stars Foot Massage Music.......2002-01-19

You know the feeling when you have a foot massage? You know, some parts relax you to the point of joyful catatonia, whilst at other times, you feel stimulated and all kind of jaunty? Well, if you ever find yourself in the position where there is nobody around to help (and you can't give yourself a foot massage!), try this: Pop 'Toxu' in the CD player, press play and relax...
You will be bathed in a North African/ French fusoin of sound, texture and rhythm. Some tracks are pure musical opium, whilst others are almost Cajun, combining traditional African instruments, such as the kora, with accordions and violins.
The constant throughout is Wasis Diop's rich, deep voice, accompanied by an inspred selection of vocalists, from Beth Hirsch to Wally Badarou. Is it raining outside? Listen to this!

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Many artists who achieve greatness inspire comparisons, but Senegalese Wasis Diop is valued for creating music unlike any other. Eloquent and polished, foreign but familiar, Diop's sound synthesizes rock, funk, West African chant, ambient electronics, and acoustical music. He is daring without being alienating. Whether he sings with his rich, sexy voice about Soweto or "Oh, my heart! Oh, my answering machine!" the sound is meaningful. His interpretation of the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" is an example of the unique musical language Diop speaks that only requires listening to understand. --Cristina Del Sesto

Amazon.com

Wasis Diop is a great internationalist, like Peter Gabriel, Ray Lema, or the members of Afro Celt Sound System; he merges global influences to create something entirely new and distinctly his own. On "Toxu," his second American release, Senegal born Diop joins together elements of rock, funk, West African chant, duets with Japanese and French singers, ambient electronics, and delightful passages played on acoustic instruments. This is not music for strict traditionalists, it is music that takes chances and forms new alliances. Joining Wasis Diop on this CD is veteran producer/keyboardist Wally Badarou, percussion wizard Steve Shehan, and a cast of singers and players from five continents. If only the world could always play this well together. --Jeff Grubb

5 out of 5 stars Toxu.......2001-09-25

Unique and varied styles of music on one CD. I don't want the music to end. I hope there is another CD to follow Toxu.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites ever........1999-10-05

My sister, the music fiend who lives in Geneva, introduced me to Wasis Diop two years ago with No Sant. I immediately loved his sound and diversity. When I was visiting in-laws this summer, I had to order Toxu from amazon.com because I missed it so much. Now, I wake in the morning with No Sant and Toxu and I'm the better for it!

5 out of 5 stars The "Thomas Crown Affair" movie is the Diop/Hirsch affair........1999-08-13

Wasis Diop and Beth Hirsch team up to give the new Pierce Brosnan/Rene Russo movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" it's heart and soul and lusty romance. The duo's energized and intimate love ballad is the background for one of the most tantallizing romance scenes to hit the movies in years. As Brosnan and Russo reach their romantic zenith the soulful sounds of "Never Enough", off of Diop's "Toxu" CD and enriched by Beth Hirsch's vocals, enrich the theatre so dramatically you may just want to jump in the lap of the person next to you. Diop/Hirsch's song, along with the chemistry of Brosnan and Russo, are "Titantic".

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely superb release........1999-02-15

This recording has something for everyone. To be sure, the songwriting is strong and varied throughout, the production is great, and it is very sensual. If you are tired, as I am, of current popular music, you would be well served by checking out the exotic but very accessible music of Mr. Diop. Assuredly, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Wasis Diop: ascendent African artist.......1999-01-13

Wasis Diop's music evokes dreams of the African plains, the smoky bistro's of Paris, and the swamps of the American Bayou - all wrapped in the etherial styling of this true genius. A must for any serious listener wishing to tap into a more global musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-07-20

I first heard a Wasis Diop song in the movie, "The Thomas Crown Affair." After my wife and I realized how much we loved that song in the movie - I bought the CD for my wife and she absolutely loves it and so do I.

The mixture of languages and rhythms makes this a CD we never get tired of.

My personal favourite for the moment is "Que faut il faire" a lullaby of sorts that instantly brings a smile to my face when I hear it.

We have since picked up his CD "No Sant" and I'm looking for a soundtrack he did for his brother's movie. Literally, all of his CDs that I have bought so far are not enough.

If you love different rhythms, a deep soothing voice and enjoy the sounds of other silky-smooth languages - this may be the best CD you buy this year.

5 out of 5 stars Rai M'Bele -- yet another transforming performace from W.D........2002-02-23

In answer to Tiffany: oh my YES!! The song Rai M'Bele is easily worth the price of the album. You won't be disappointed. It has Wasis Diop's exquisite voice, deep and gentle, a flowing melody and perfect rhythms.

I first heard "Everything Is Never Quite Enough" from the movie Thomas Crowne Affair and was transfixed, replaying it over and over -- and not because that was the love scene! His other album No Sant is also very good with many excellent tracks but I can't decide whether my favorite of his so far is Rai M'Bele or Eveverying I.N.Q.E. Please, help encourage this guy to make more.

I am buying this album just to get the *words* to Rai M'Bele. They have moved me to tears in Senegalese, I can't wait to find out if there's an English translation in the cover materials.

4 out of 5 stars Curious.......2001-07-05

Actually I'm thinking about buying this CD because I love the song "Everything is never quite enough". I wonder if the other songs are similar to this one, in the same song style. If they are then I can rate this CD really high. I can dance forever to the beat of that one song.

5 out of 5 stars Wasis Diop is a musical force...........2000-12-29

I purchased Wasis Diop's other cd "No Sant" a few months ago, and just picked up "Toxu",what a super cd....much different from No Sant's feel and overall groove. The voice is still one to be reckoned with...highlights on this one are many... "My Son" wich is almost hokey but sooo cool, Que Fait-Il Faire? is another one of those trance like mello tunes that you just fade into....with 2 superb albums back to back one can only see Wasis Diop and his talented conspiritors on the fast track to world music stardom...

5 out of 5 stars Ages Like a Fine Wine.......2000-04-26

This is one of those rare records that gets better with each listening. I was introduced to this recording by chance and it quickly slipped into heavy rotation at home and work.

The breadth of styles on this record make it something anyone will like and the stuff you don't like you later love. I ended up buying NO SANT also (also great) and wished HYENES (a soundtrack written by Wasis Diop) was still available as it got great reviews in the rough guide to world music.

The bottom line is I can't get enough of this amazing artist and anxiously await his next release. You won't be dissappointed!
