Album Description
Obviously, Kimya Dawson's solo albums are highly recommended to fans of the Moldy Peaches, but don't expect sex and drug jokes. These albums are more serious, transcending the novelty and humor of the Peaches. Embracing nostalgia, melancholy and sincerity, Dawson proves as unique as she is brilliant, creating an album that is both compelling and charismatic: an instant anti-folk classic. #4 In Time Out New York's Top 10 of 2003 and #9 on Robert Christgau's Dean's List in the Village Voice.

Man, aside from this album, Kimya Dawson really is a great person. She puts on free shows all of the time and loves to talk to all of her fans. I have a hunch that if I were upset and went up to her, she'd give me a hug and talk to me until I felt better. Best song: Hadlock Padlock Wim
Top ten list for favorite cd ever.......2007-03-18
Kimya Dawson is truly an amazing, inspiring artist. This by far is my favorite Kimya Dawson cd that has ever been made. These songs will make you laugh and cry and wish you were 10 again and didn't have to worry about the world so much.
If you like music that makes you think - then this is the cd for you. Play this at a party or in a long car ride. Great for all ages.
A thoughtful and emotive journal.......2006-05-09
I think I would venture to say this is my favourite Kimya album (although they are all good and have their place) and perhaps one of my favourite lo-fi, anti-folk albums ever. Kimya has a brilliant way of making you feel like bouncing and crying at the same time. Her melodies are generally light, and often on this album the lyrics are quite heavy.
Will You Be Me? is a fabulous song that drifts you away into a sort of fantasy/lullaby world (this song in fact is probably what pushed the album to the top for me). The Beer is catchy but haunting and disturbing while being somewhat amusing. Who else could pull of throwing in a reference to the Mad Max movies?
I was lucky enough to see Kimya live in a small grungy club when I was in the UK, and she is brilliant. At that time I only knew her more recent stuff, and even her songs that I didn't know had captivated me. She has a magnetic personality and an unmatched talent for portraying how life is both desperate and amusing at the same time. Her work is very personal and somewhat confessional (like Plath's poetry, perhaps), but it is still very relatable and accessible.
Give Kimya a listen. Often it takes a few listens for the genius to come out, but I think you'll find it's worth the effort. If, however, you like a more polished sound, perhaps try her later album the Hidden Vagenda, which is a bit more produced.
If the whole world listened to Kimya Dawson, there would be no wars.......2006-01-14
I am severely in love with this album. It is vital that you are aware of the beauty and creativity of this artist. To begin with, the lyrics are clever and original. Clever and original may even be understatements. They're humorous, but at the same time saddening and beautiful. It's as if I could have written these songs, except that I'm not talented and eloquent and I can't play guitar.
In a world of digitally enhanced voices and repeated dull power chords considered acceptable guitar lines, Dawson's voice and music is refreshingly girlish and raw. It makes me smile to hear someone with perhaps not the most conventionally perfect voice, but one that is impressive and different on its own level.
I think it's possibly that I enjoy solo Kimya Dawson even MORE than The Moldy Peaches, which is quite a bold statement for me.
If you don't buy this album, you are depriving yourself.
fronts no jacks........2005-07-10
This is a great, surreal and soulful album. All of the songs hold up. On "For Katie", Kimya gives a shout out to Jeffrey Lewis, another great contemporary New York songwriter who you should check out.

No Better Introduction To Fahey's Music.......2006-03-21
If I could own only one John Fahey album, it would be "The Yellow Princess," so this reissue is a real treat. This is at least the third time Vanguard has issued this album on CD-"The Essential John Fahey" and "Best of the Vanguard Years" couple it with tracks from Fahey's "Requia"-but this 2006 release restores the original cover art and Fahey's surreal, confounding liner notes. The addition of three previously unreleased tracks from 1965 would suffice to justify purchasing this version, even if you already owned an earlier edition. These include a rare example of his 12-string work, an early version of "Fare Forward Voyagers," and a lengthy slide guitar improvisation. For the uninitiated, I can think of no better introduction to Fahey's music than "The Yellow Princess." All the primary strains of his work are represented here: pre-WWII country blues guitar stylings; Indian raga; Episcopal hymns ("Commemorative Transfiguration and Communion at Magruder Park" quotes "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones") and even musique concrete ("Singing Bridge of Memphis, Tennessee"). There is a more whimsical, evocative quality to the last-named track than one finds in Fahey's at times dissonant, abrasive later material. Reviewers elsewhere have remarked that "The Yellow Princess" features some of his best guitar work, and that the sonic quality of the recording is as if one is listening from inside the instrument. My friend Clark quotes John Fahey as having said something like, "I'm not the greatest guitarist, but I am the deepest." Let the "Yellow Princess" show you what he meant.

Customer Reviews:
Two greats: both have seen better days.......2007-04-16
Putting two great musicians of the stature of Domingo and Perlman together must have sounded like a fine idea-- no doubt joining these musical giants should produce musical fireworks. Unfortunately the final product offered on this disc is rather drab. The recording lacks focus and is generally musically hollow.
No doubt both Domingo and Perlman offer the listener flashes of how great they both are, but neither is interested in exploring the subtle nuances of each musical selection. Pieces such as Massenet's "Elegie," Manuel Ponce's "Estrellita," and Tosti's "Ideale" are beautifully lilting pieces, which are not (except for moments in the Massenet) served well by the rather over-stated performances of both men. Pieces such as Romberg's "Serenade" from The Student Prince and Kalman's "Weist du es noch?" fare better, as they fit Domingo's operatic temperament and Perlman's virtuoso sensibilities. But even these seem to be mere show pieces devoid of depth. I found the tenor-violin rendition of the Barcarolle from Les contes d'Hoffman unpleasant, and Danny Boy equally so.
The over-miking of both performers does not help matters much, and in Domingo's case only served to amplify some strained moments in his top range.
The disc as a concept is also rather problematic. A recital album of any sort should have some sort of shape and texture-- this recording does not offer a readily decipherable one, save for a vague chronological relationship among the pieces (except for a Handel aria!), and the variety offered. As far as variety is concerned, the track listing "kindly" offers the listener explicit references to the many languages Domingo sings on the disc (6-- Spanish, English, French, German, Russian, and Italian).
No doubt fans of both gentlemen will want to have the disc, but both have seen much better days. Still, it is true that a mediocre performance by two giants reveals certain hidden treasures that listeners looking to buy this disc will be able to horde.
(This recording, in my opinion, hovers between two and three stars, but I give it the benefit of the doubt and round up)
Two masters of music.......2003-01-28
Wow! What can I say? It is so obvious who rules the stage when it comes to violin virtuosos. Itzhak Perlman takes my breath away every time I hear his bow touch a violin and to be playing with one of the world's best vocalists alone shows some accomplishment. Of course... it goes without saying that Domingo is probably THE BEST tenor of this lifetime. My personal favorite on this CD is the "Offenbach". I've heard this piece sung and played by many artists, but none of them come close to this recording and it truly touches your heart and soul. This CD has definitely become a favorite of mine and I cannot seem to put it back in its CD case! This album is definitely worth getting for one's self and I would even say it is also a very nice gift idea, that even non-classic listeners would appreciate.
Ten Stars!!!.......1999-07-27
BothItzhak Perlman and Placido Domingo are two of the most sophisticated and gifted musicians that ever graced our sad world with their presence. For whatever they do we should be eternally grateful. Both artists often ventured in the world of popular music, which goes to show just how diverse and open-minded they are. Every time they had something new to say as to the music, and attracted new legions of fans. Perlman's excursions into jazz and Domingo's explorations of modern Latin music are widely known and appreciated and loved by many. Here they combine their extraordinary forces to bring to us a relatively "conservative" repertoire, yet they do with such skill and class, the familiar selections sound fresh and enchanting. Don't underestimate the level of difficulty, though. Notice the two Rachmaninov songs, arranged splendidly for tenor and violin. (Btw, the song "O Cease thy singing, maiden fair" is usually performed by bass (baritone) and piano.) They include a Richard Strauss lieder "Morgen", a feat, not even attempted by other Italian opera-trained tenors, a nice surprise that attests to Placido Domingo's infinite talents. Massenet's "Elegie" is full of passion and melancholy, and Kalman's "Kome, Zigane" sparkles with gypsy rhythm and intensity. Among the other gems are Handel's "Ombra mai fu" and Tosselli's "Serenade" on which Placido and Itzhak display their flawless virtuosity and sincere love for the music. This is the most wonderful and unusual album, a true revelation. Thank you, Placido and Itzhak, the world is a better place thanks to you.
Together is exactly right.......1999-07-18
Together is the most stirring, evocative album anyone could ever wish to hear. Itzhak Perlman's renditons of Estrellita, Danny Boy, actually each of the selections draws the listener along the strings of his bow and sends them soaring. Placido's voice blends magically with the notes of the violin in such a way that you realise both 'instruments' are being played by a master musician.
Great for casual listening.......1999-06-01
This disc is great for casual listening. The pieces featured are light and easy on the ears. Domingo and Perlman combined beautifully in these well-arranged pieces. Sound quality is also good. However, this is not a disc for serious listeners or collectors.

Bright, lively, short pieces.......2004-01-01
I have used several songs from this CD as beginning choreographies for my students. They are short, with well-defined phrasing and verses that are easy to choreograph. I have also used several numbers (including the fun drum solo!) for restaurant and hafla dancing, and the audience always wakes up for these perky Lebanese pieces!
Good, short pieces great for beginners.......2001-07-27
The pieces here are very rhythmic and rather short (usually between 4-5mins), which are very good for belly-dance beginners.

Yellow Princess Shines.......2004-11-30
I've owned this album for a little while, and listened to it a few times without really being too affected. But something has changed and I cannot stop listening to the record and going over the songs in my head. Fahey is stupendous, and this album is playful and serious enough to contain some of his brilliance. I highly recommend it.
more essential early Fahey.......2001-03-10
"The Yellow Princess" has a lot in common with Fahey's other early stuff, especially "Death Chants, Breakdown, and Military Waltzes." Similar inspired mix of full-on fingerpicking, slow blues, dissonance and found sound. The title track can be found on a number of anthologies, but the rest of the record is excellent as well. There's drum and bass backing on a few cuts, an unusual set-up for Fahey but one that works well.
Suprising this is only available as an import, according to Amazon. You'd think Vanguard would get with the program and reissue this excellent CD, especially now that he's kicked the bucket. Let's hope so.
