"M" -A-zing!.......2006-07-12

If one goes and compares French and English music side by side (starting from the late fifties until today) they would see that they each helped pollinate the other.

For example, listen to the song "Le monde est gris, le monde est bleu" (The world is gray, the world is blue) by Eric Charden, written in 1965, you'll see the inspiration for the sound (the feel) that we would later hear in the beginning of "A Day in The Life."

"My Way" was actually based on an original by Claude Francois.

"If you go away" based on "Ne me quittes pas" by Jacques Brel.

True, some French music is shear "M**de" (and the same can be said about English/American music).

But some of it is visionary.

"M" is in that category.

And the fact he comes from a long line of creative (Lebanese) people is not bad!

I will recommend you listen to "Qui de Nous Deux" first (if you need to ease your self into the style)

But, if you had to choose one or the other... tough choice... It's like asking... Revolver or Sgt. Pepper...

'Le Bapteme', the first of -M-'s studio albums, is definitely the most laid-back of them all, favoring a lot of classical guitar and poetic vocals (like songs 'le fleur'). 'Le bapteme' has plenty of rockier, funkier stuff, however! "Pick Pocket" and "Machistador", for example -- the best rock-funk I've ever heard comes from a French singer/songwriter?

The truth is the -M- is an eclectic mix of styles and musical prowess; he ranges from folk to rock to funk to jazzy to pop and back. Some people find his high, breathy voice not to their liking, but I'm in awe of -M-'s singing style and incredible control. Did I mention -M- plays a MEAN GUITAR? His studio albums don't have as much solo guitar material as I'd like, but on youtube.com you can find some really good clips of him ripping it up. The extended version of "Machistador" has a pretty sweet solo, at least.

If you like funk, rock, pop, classical style guitar, mediterrannean jazz... get this album! -M- might be rather obscure in America, but he is one hell of a musical talent nonetheless.

A great introduction to the music of France.......2006-01-31

From what I hear, music from France is usually scorned. I'm reminded of the passage in Hitchhiker's Guide that describes Volgan(?) poetry whenever I hear other people discuss French pop music in particular. Of course, there is always an exception. M is so adept at this thing called pop he could be British. I've heard people liken him to Robert Smith of the cure. He definitely has that style but appeals to a slightly more stable audience. This is music to drive and live to not music to consider opening a vein to. I don't speak French but being fluent is not a prerequisit for admiring his voice which touched my capitalist heart.

having a short week in a half price bungalow for 8 persons with just me and my girlfriend. We bought the CD without listening first. The cover appealed 2 us when we were buying a French bread in the Super Marché.

This one is a masterpiece of creativity in lo-fi detail.

So instead of wining over buying the wrong CD, the previous customer should be thankful for the chance to have sunshine poor out of his speakers.

ATTENTION: This is NOT the Robin Scott M !!!.......2004-04-29

I first found out about this CD over 4 years ago. I picked it up thinking it was Robin Scott's M. Since I knew that Robin was heavily involved in World Muzik, I bought it and was ready for some more Pop Muzik. When I gave it a listen, I was surprised to find out that the vocals were NOT Robin Scott!!! I was lucky enough to speak to him a few months later and he informed me that he had nothing to do with this CD. In fact, this was entirely different M! Needless to say, I was NOT amused. Anyway, I just felt that I should rant about this CD and get it off my chest. Farewell and I bid you all good day.
