Few albums sum the musical ideas of an instumentalist as well as Crescent does for John Coltrane. One gets the sense that all the bugs have been worked out and that this is what he wanted to say. The message is lyricism and the blues... and perhaps laughter. The rhythm section is warm and sharp. The music has the searching melencholy that is immediately recognizable as Trane. Singularly beautiful.

i've been on a real coltrane binge of late, and have been filling in some holes in my collection of his stuff. what a hole i found from 1964! no wonder i have always felt a vague sense of dissatisfaction with life. now i know what was wrong all along. i didn't have this great coltrane masterpiece! well now i do, and i feel 100% on top of life's game. this album is a stunning piece of work, mostly mid-tempo to slow in vibe, coltrane here plays absolutely gorgeous sax, while mccoy tyner's wizardry on piano is inventive and wonderful for the ear to behold, as well. the rhythm section of jimmy garrison (bass) and elvin jones (drums) rumbles along beneath the surface like some swelling wave, carrying things to their conclusion with a haunting sublty and grace. the title track "crescent" is one of my all-time favorite trane tracks now, and the ballad "wise one" is close on its heels. the final cut "the drum thing" is an amazing piece, too. a composition where elvin jones' magic really stands out. no john coltrane collection is complete without this heavenly album. now i know.

This is classic Coltrane. For all jazz aficionados who can appreciate the improvisational lyricism and depth of this genius's music. It's also a great album for listeners who can't take the intense, explosive solos of his later journeys.

I have almost all of the records of Coltrane on LP,now in Cd.To understand his music and development you must know He has 4 phases, The first pre atlantic, the second on Atlantic. The third is modal on Impulse, and the last near free jazz on the same label until his death.
this is of me the best of his third phase with "a love supreme".INDISPENSABLE.

Sea Of Tranquility.......2006-05-23

Collecting John Coltrane is a challenge; he was prolific, constantly evolving, and seemed to live in a recording studio. Even so, certain landmark efforts have achieved "essential" status, for a variety of reasons. I would agree that A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things, Ascension, African Brass, Giant Steps, and the Johnny Hartman collaboration all fall into this category. Crescent does too, and I'm not certain why it is so frequently overlooked.

Like A Love Supreme, Crescent is an integrated whole, not a mere collection of "tracks." The entire effort casts a very particular spell. Maybe critics don't embrace it because it doesn't feature the trademark "sheets of sound" for which Coltrane was known, something akin to blowing the cold off of ice. The allure of Crescent is much more subtle than that.

Each selection, even the straight-ahead Bessie's Blues, aches with haunting, spiritual elegance. The solos, which do occasionally soar, never lose sight of the ground and resolve back into their themes in deeply satisfying ways. Coltrane's tone, always amazing, is especially lush and round here, almost opulent. Even at its wiggliest you're unlikely to turn down the sound, this CD wants to soothe you, not nail you to the wall.

The opening bars of the title track tell you exactly where you're about to go, straight into the sad and beautiful heart of truth. Wise One takes listeners through the entire emotional cycle, fragile longing, seeking that reaches up, reconciliation. Perfection. McCoy Tyner shines throughout on piano, especially on Lonnie's Lament, a tune lovely enough to put tears in the eyes of a serial killer. Drum Thing finds Elvin Jones conjuring up a sort of hypnotic trance; the interplay between him and Coltrane provides a transcendent conclusion to a CD of exquisite beauty.

In many ways it's unfortunate that Coltrane's reputation rests on the idea of destroying music in order to reinvent it. Listening to Crescent provides ample evidence that, in addition to being a profoundly spiritual man, Coltrane was as lyrical a player as has ever unpacked a horn.

The Cowboy Junkies' Michael Timmins is a most literary songwriter. On the Toronto quartet's Pale Sun Crescent Moon, Timmins imbeds lines from William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom into the song "First Recollection" and a line from Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "The General in His Labyrinth" in the song "Seven Years" without it seeming the least bit awkward. He has found the perfect literary voice for his writing in his sister Margo Timmins, whose alto is all smoke and suggestion. Songs are not poems, however, and never was that distinction more obvious than it is here. The album's so-called songs float in atmospheric harmonies, unshaped by melody or meter. This droning music may seem haunting on first encounter, but by the third song the melodic monotony encourages dozing. --Geoffrey Himes

Subtle Charms.......2006-12-21

Another fine album from the Cowboy Junkies. "Pale Sun" is more brooding moody music created by Michael Timmins and sung by his sister Margo. Highlights include "Anniversary Song", "Crescent Moon", and the haunting "Floorboard Blues". I really find it hard to describe just exactly what this band does, but they do it so well it tends to seep into your being.

after 16 years this is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Margo's voice gets in your heart and you can feel her emotions as she sings. if you buy any albums by the cowboy junkies this should be the one.

It'll cut right through you.........2004-07-18

I'm generally indifferent to the Cowboy Junkies, but on this CD Margo Timmins' vocals reach right into your being. The tunes are outstanding and there are some nice rockers (for this band).

For those who like incandescent vocals, this CD ranks right up there with albums like Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece.

Other than Trinity Sessions, which is in a world of its own, I haven't been too impressed with the other CD's by this band, but in this effort Margo and the boys found something that reaches deep and will stay with you.

My stars go to "anniversary song".......2004-02-11

I bought this c.d. probably 10 years ago for the 'anniversary song'. It is the best thing going for this tedious disc.
I like women in rock with harmonious and soothing voices, and the singer here definitely falls into the category. However, I found this album very boring, but her voice is excellent. Most of the songs sound alike with the exception of it's most commercial recording of the anniversary song.
I don't know their catalog of music but I hope that the rest of their records aren't as bland as this one. Just my thoughts..I seem to have the lowest star review here so other people seem to appreciate their haunting lyrics hopefully over their non melodies.

Middle Eastern multi-instrumentalist Omar Tekbilek gets solo billing for Crescent Moon even though it is produced by longtime collaborator and keyboardist Brian Keane. Keane also contributes as a musician, along with fellow synthesizer player Steve Roach and several other more-acoustic performers, but the overall sound is close to Tekbilek's roots and traditions. With a couple of exceptions (notably "Salute to the Sun," a heartfelt ambient piece with some vocals from Tekbilek), the 10 cuts are upbeat acoustic exercises using percussion and string and woodwind instruments in traditional settings, with just the slightest hint of electronic washes in the production. Not that the music needs any bolstering; it is sonic enough in its own right. With Crescent Moon, the ancient symbol of the Ottoman Empire and Islam, Tekbilek builds on his reputation as a master musician of great integrity who is interpreting ancient music for today's audience. The liner notes could be a little more informative about the musicians and the recording. --Derek Rath

Omar Faruk Tekbilek's "Crescent Moon" is a great CD. The first time I heard it, I was taking a Belly Dancing series. We began to work on veil, and the instructor put on this CD. It took me right into a trance-like state. I was no longer in a room with other people. I was in the marketplace, and in India. I was entirely moved by the sensuality of the music, and also the playfulness of some of the faster tracks. I would definetly recommend this CD, particularly for veil work. Enjoy!

....if I may be so cliche! He just gets better, and this CD is for ANY collection of ethnic music. Frame drum,doumbek and nay; just to name a few of the instruments played (superbly).....Don't like the nay? This will even please sensitive, western ears. Dancers will find that unusually sensual and 'something special' to dance to. This CD will hold any fan of Mr. Tekbilek until the next one comes!

Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.

Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05

I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.

Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. Fabulous!.......2002-07-05

I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.

I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.

This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

Album Description

I started arranging Beatles music for guitar many years ago. I can't remember exactly when nor can I remember the first song I arranged. Beginning in January of 2003 I began exploring more of the music written by Lennon and McCartney, perhaps because my son is now discovering just how timeless and infectious the music is. It seems each generation goes through a process of discovery with the music of the Beatles. So here is a collection of my favorite Beatles songs. They're all played on an acoustic guitar that has been tuned down quite a bit from a normal guitar. This is a solo guitar project; stark, raw and unfiltered.

This CD (dare I say album?) was very well performed and the material was artfully chosen. I am very pleased. I am waiting patiently for his project of Twisted Sister accoustics!

We've heard it all before ... and it's a CDR not a CD ... with a paper label.......2006-08-04

This is a very pleasant album, but as a collector with hundreds of Beatles cover albums, I would say it brings nothing new to the genre except a clever title. And I was extremely disappointed to find out that it was a CDR not a CD, with a glued on paper label to boot. Who knows if it will even be playable in 10 years?! CDR sellers ought to at least warn potential buyers that it's not a pressed CD ... which is really what it was advertised as. And how expensive is it to print on CDRs directly these days anyway?

Technically Amazing but..........2005-06-12

OK, there's no question this guy can play the heck out of the guitar. And taking on a song like "Magical Mystery Tour" on solo guitar? That's ambitious. Latarski does some very nifty arranging work on "Norwegian Wood" and his versions of "Let It Be" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" are so full you'll hardly notice the lack of vocals. But doesn't every jazz guitarist play "Blackbird" just to show off? One star off for that and the obligatory cover of "Yesterday" - a song we've all heard just too many versions of already.

Marvelous guitar work on Beatles Faves.......2005-02-21

My first review of an album, this is just plain awesome. The selections are great and hearing them on an acoustic guitar is wonderful. Every song on the CD is really good. I would highly reccomend it to any Beatles fan (who isn't?) or anyone interested in artful acoustic guitar pieces. The tuned down guitar is an exceptional fit to these songs.

The Crescent City Suite will remain a classic, just like the Nut Cracker Suite. It will become eternal in the mind and ears of the listener. I have the LP record of this that I purchased some years ago. On the back of it is a summary of each song. When the information for the CD was printed up, this wasn't given. The music came to be written when husband & wife Paul Weston & Jo Stafford visited New Orleans, Louisiana, they fell in love with the city. I truly believe that Paul Weston was heavenly inspired when he wrote it. It is timeless and tireless. If you listen to it once, you can be sure you'll be listening to it again and again. Paul Weston clearly outdid himself with this piece of music which is unmatched in it's genre. Every song is truly outstanding. And the availability now on CD is great!!

I grew up in New Orleans and have listened to the LP album version over and over for decades. And it is a magnificent mosaic of music, which allows the imagination to take one on a magical travelogue around the city, into areas and history not usually seen by the tourist. Obviously, a great deal of research went into the music and this capsule history of New Orleans. The orchestra performs the arrangements flawlessly and the solos are truly inspired. I must point out the stings, in particular, which are absolutely wonderful throughout, and a perfect memorable example is the soaringly beautiful and unusual "Esplanade at Sunset", one of the recording's 'Pieces De Resistance'.

The hauntingly beautiful main "Crescent City" theme is one of the best I have ever heard and it appears, transmuted slightly, over and over throughout the recording. The piece that is a standout is the blues ballad "Storyville": the arrangement, the musical conception, the train station sounds, and the sax solo are awesome. The Creole triptych "Un, Duex, Trois"; "Salangadou"; and "Michie Preval" is an arresting piece of arranging and inspired brass and strings. And the ending piece, "Mardi Gras", is a wonderful whirlwind of music that puts the perfect cap on the CD, as it surges into the main theme again. This is a must have addition to any CD collection.

Timeless.......2004-07-09

As a New Orleans/French Quarter tour guide and somewhat of a historian of New Orleans, I have to say, its the only composition that truly reflects the ambiance of our city so masterfully. Its a gem! My CD is about to wear out, and you can bet I'll be purchasing another to take its place!! I grew up in New Orleans, and have lived here all of my life, and couldn't believe the person who composed this music is not originally from New Orleans, or at least that's what I was told. I remember as a child some of the songs being played on TV as background music for one of our local news stations. The sounds have always captured my emotions and can almost immediately give me images of the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, Bourbon Street, the Mississippi River and so many other images of the "Crescent City". Great performances, you won't be disappointed.

Still great after 45+ years!.......2004-01-06

I purchased the original "LP" of this album in the late 1950's while attending high school or LSU. The original vinyl recording's cover jacket has a picture of New Orleans from the air at late afternoon and shows the single span of the Greater New Orleans Bridge under construction (the now existing second span had not been dreamed of yet). Being born in New Orleans and having lived here all of my life, these songs are still haunting and authentic representations of the New Orleans I grew up and lived with. It was then, and is still now, a classic work of smooth sounds and easy listening music.
I am so pleased to find it available on CD. I will purchase several immediately for myself and friends.

Crescent City Paul Weston and His Orchestra.......2003-02-09

This is Paul Weston's best of many albums. I have owned the LP version of this recording since my college days at Okla University and was thrilled to see it released in CD form. Paul Weston, who along with Johnny Mercer, was a founder of Capitol Records, ranks right up there with other great orchestra leaders like James Last, Montovani, Percy Faith, and Jackie Gleason. This is a must have album if you like easy listening music because this is easy listening, New Orleans style! My wife and I wish Paul and his wife, singer Jo Stafford, many more years of good health and prosperity and we thank both of them for their many contributions to our music enjoyment.

The stuff of legends.......2006-11-01

This was the band that was put together to play during intermission for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre on the CBS radio network. Jimmie Noone was the original clarinettist chosen to participate. He died unexpectedly and was replaced by Omer Simeon. Darnell Howard then replaces Simeon for the eight titles from 1945. Minor Hall replaces Alton Redd on drums for all but four of the numbers. Mutt Carey is the trumpet player and plays hot whether open or muted. This is his definitive recording. Buster Wilson is on piano, Bud Scott on guitar, and Ed Garland handles the bass chores. Ory, of course, is on trombone and smears, slides, and tailgates in the same way he did back in the twenties when he recorded with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Ory was an innovator, a giant in the history of jazz music.
Nesuhi Ertegun, who later co-founded Atlantic records, was so enamoured with this band that he recorded them in a state of the art studio and started his own Crescent label to release the recordings.
The sound quality is really superb and the musicians were clearly inspired. There are Ory originals, traditionals, and songs of the day all treated in the inimmitable Ory way. His Creole Jazz Band was to undergo personnel changes right through the fifties, yet the sound and attack of the band never changed. There were wonderful recordings for the Good Time Jazz label as well as a few for Verve.
This may be the Kid Ory recording that is essential for your collection. Great tunes, great recording, and it is the stuff of legends.

If you like New Orleans R&B this is the real deal.......2005-09-06

This is a 1-CD sampler of songs taken from the box set entitled "Crescent City Soul: The Sound of New Orleans 1947-74." The full box set is rare and going for big buck$ these days, so this sampler is worth its weight in gold, as far as I'm concerned.

It starts off just where it should, with Fats Domino's "Fat Man Blues" and continues on through a myriad of well-known and lesser known artists' best tunes. Whether it Fats, or the original recording of "Bon Ton Roulet," or Dave Bartholomew singing "The Monkey Speaks His Mind" or the original version of "Fortune Teller" ..just too much fun.

The beauty of this collection is that original New Orleans R&B is a unique sound, different from Memphis, Detroit, etc., and this CD brings to life that difference in a way that makes you smile, just like one would smile when one sets foot in the Crescent City for the first time. God Bless New Orleans.
