Lo'Jo are perhaps the ideal reflection of modern France. Multicultural, quirky, and artistic, they bring together strands of chanson, North African rhythms and harmonies, and the primal sounds of West Africa into a tasty bouillabaisse. Singer-songwriter Denis Pean has the gritty voice and louche charisma of Serge Gainsbourg, but he's only part of the magic that makes up Lo'Jo. Richard Bourreau sizzles on the violin, bringing a wild Gypsy style to the proceedings, while Algerian sisters Yamina and Nadia Nid El Mourid fill out the sound with percussion and vocals that conjure up desert nights. The music becomes more than the sum of its parts, with a life of its own, from the pulse of "Brule La Meche" to the epic "Senor Calice," recorded in Mali, which adds some marvelously wonky brass work from Benin's Gangbe Brass Band for a firmer grip between continents. The simple truth is there's no one quite like Lo'Jo. They're the musical shamans of one world. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No two albums the same.......2006-06-12

I first heard Lo'Jo on a compilation album. In the beginning,I found the lead singer,Denis Pean, somewhat annoying, but the group grew on me.Their rhythms, their use of diverse styles came to enchant me.

This is the first album by them that I purchased--and haven't regretted it.This album is more African in tone.

Highlights-
1)Baji Larabat-Danceable.It sounds like a wild gypsy gathering meets Arabian bellydancing.
2)Dobosz-This has a more Eastern European flavor.
3)Senor Calice-A brass band!
4)In the commotion-More pensive and meditative.

No two albums are the same with Lo'Jo.I hear they'll be releasing another album soon....Yay!

4 out of 5 stars Another layer cake of savory, cross-cultural ingredients.......2006-03-23

Layered stews in which each apparently starts with a core ingredient and builds the desired mix of flavors one layer at a time. In the finished product, each layer repeatedly rises to prominence through the others, and all undulate together to make all flavors complementary, no matter how different they are. Paolo Conte- and B-52-clones play their characteristic roles. This edition includes Mideast, Balkans, Europop, boulevardier, Latin, African. A calm urgency that sustains tension forever prevails throughout. Each stew suspends its ingredients in this forward driving tension. S: tr 1-Brûlé la mèche (a Lo'Jo classic for me now in which the balance is perfect and the sway engulfs you). tr 2-(another classic that highlights the urgency of their music, especially in B-52 choruses). tr 10-À l'embrace des lèvres (perhaps the least characteristic cut-a classic piano boulevardier waltz) [44:20]

4 out of 5 stars world music with staying power.......2005-06-29

I heard a review on BBC radio: "if this group comes within 100 miles of where you live, go see them." That's a pretty strong recommendation, but it's right on the money. Think Negresses Vertes, Bebo and Cigale, and Ekova all rolled into one. I can't say that I love every track on this CD, but the best of the bunch is heads and tails above what you'll find elsewhere. Songs like brule la meche, jah kas cool boy, and bambritcho will find their way to your iPod and stay there for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I own.......2003-08-06

I've never heard music that sounds anything like Lojo's blend of french, Middle Eastern, and West African melodies and rhythms, played with as much heart and honest feeling. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Bought on whim, NO REGRETS.......2002-12-10

I have to admit, I am picky when it comes to music. I bought this album on a whim and have not been disappointed or tempted to doubt the impulse that let me to buy it.

It requires more than one listening, but is well worth the listen. Even if you don't understand French or Arabic, the tunes and rhythms draw you in.
