5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Having left medieval chant and somewhat later polyphony behind and moved, musically, across the Atlantic with their last CD (American Angels), the women of Anonymous 4 are still exploring. For their move up a few centuries, their impeccable tonal purity remains, but a decidedly American twang has been added to some of the folksier, Southern mountain-based tunes and revival songs. It's as accurate and enchanting as everything else they do. Their sense of history, the when and where of the music they perform, manages to avoid academic stuffiness: this music communicates. Hymns, ballads, and revival songs make up Gloryland, and the 4 have added superb instrumentalists--Darol Anger and Mike Marshall on fiddles, mandolins, and guitars--to the mix on about half the selections. Some of the songs are begun in simple solfege* (fa, sol, la, mi, etc.) and then are sung with the actual text. Some are presented as duets or solos, and "I'm on My Journey Home" is sung by all four women; some are simple, others delightfully rich harmonically. Irresistible. --Robert Levine

* Often called "shape-note" singing because the tones were frequently notated in differently shaped symbols for teaching purposes (fa = triangle, sol = circle, etc.).

Amazing is the word for this record more than Gloryland. I have been touched by the lyrics and the voices. Coming from a different cultural background allows to understand very well the root information valid for everyone in the songs, hymns, etc they have selected for this record.
I will wait for the next record!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible rendition of American sacred songs, by a singer of such music.......2007-02-15

I've been a fan of Anonymous 4 for years, and have seen them in concert. I also sing many of the songs included on the CD on a regular basis, for they come from a nineteenth century American, a cappella shaped-note songbook titled The Sacred Harp. Anonymous 4's haunting renditions turn these gritty, sometimes harsh harmonies into ethereal beauties, while taking away none of the intense essence that is Sacred Harp. A southern singer once said to me that Sacred Harp is "heavy metal music for country folk." Well, Anonymous 4 have taken that "heavy metal" and refined it into purest silver tones--silver tones that coat the common-metal core so important to this music, for it was and is music of the common people. If you enjoy shape-note music, early American music, Anonymous 4, or simply crave something different, I highly recommend this CD to you.

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great to hear the old and new songs and to remember a really well done animated film.

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great kids cd!!.......2007-03-24

My daughter absolutely loves this cd. I could not find it anywhere until i looked on amazon, so thank you amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

5 out of 5 stars Her favorite gift..........2006-12-23

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Ritual.......2007-06-27

Utterly fabulous! This album is an important addition to any collection of Edgar Meyer's work, or a great introduction for anyone interested in modern American folk music. The songs will keep your head nodding and your toes tapping as you listen to pieces that range from exquisitely simplistic to incredibly complex.

5 out of 5 stars Background Music?.......2007-01-02

This is a brilliant, beautiful, fun album that really makes Meyer's command of a complex and much under-appreciated instrument seem god given. In spite of the fact that there aren't any words the music on here stakes a claim for itself outside of just background music because it can be pretty edgy and raw at times. I like the combination of old folk tunes covered and Meyer's avant-garde double bass compositions, although this album's not for those looking for lots of covers of classical tunes.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must-buy for any collection........2006-07-01

This is an amazing album! The combination of talent, musicianship, and artistry on this album is startling. It is a perfect blend of classical, rock, blues, jazz, and folk influences; there is really something for everyone here. One cannot listen to this album without getting lost in the music. As a fellow composer and string player, I highly recommend Uncommon Ritual.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Composers with a New Vein of Music.......2006-04-09

There is a real joy in discovering the work of contemporary composers who lighten the music world with abundant creativity. Such is the case for Edgar Meyer, B?la Fleck and Mike Marshall. These three not only compose but also perform their own compositions on this completely delightful CD sampler.

The works marry American folk tune semblances with folk music sounds from stray parts of the world. But they also know their classical training and the roundelays on old themes and styles prove to be some of the most exciting. Edgar Meyer plays Bass, Contrabass , Mandocello, and Piano; B?la Fleck plays Banjo, Electric Guitar, Gut String Guitar, Mandolin, national steel guitar, and Track Performer; and Mike Marshall plays Guitar, Mandocello, Mandola, Mandolin, and Track Performer. Just listing the instruments involve in this m?lange of works suggests that the music is unlike any you may have heard before, especially in the chamber music atmosphere it is played.

All three artists are gifted with fertile minds and technical demands for the instruments used. The result is a recital of endlessly interesting music, as fresh as morning sun and equally as welcome! Grady Harp, April 06

Bassist-composer Edgar Meyer is no stranger to genre "crossover"--he's created moving string quartet works, recorded a classical album with bluegrass greats, and, of course, earned his chops on the folk scene. But Short Trip Home, Meyer's collaboration with violinist Joshua Bell (and bluegrass musicians Sam Bush and Mike Marshall), might be one of his most effective projects yet--a successful mix of bluegrass, improv jamming, and chamber music. The lovely title track is a moving, solitary piece, with Joshua Bell doing most of the lyrical work. "BP" is as close to a bluegrass jam as anything on this disc, with Bell's fiddle, the duo mandolins, and Meyer's bass all working together in a syncopated frenzy. "Death by Triple Fiddle" ends this disc on a thundering note--a "breakdown" if ever there was one. If you loved Meyer's work with Yo-Yo Ma on Appalachian Waltz, or perhaps just want to hear one very sublime, genre-fusing take on Americana themes, this disc is perfect for you. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind Great!.......2007-01-16

I wasn't expecting to like this very much. Although I really enjoy classical music, when it comes to bluegrass or country type of stuff, I don't look for virtuso playing or musical subtlety, but more for a more superficial, foot-stomping good time. This album doesn't really fit either category, but it has it's own great flavor. Mostly, it's due to Edgar Meyers, I guess. He composed it mostly & he does things on the bass that I never heard the like of before. Of course the other musicians add a lot-it's not just a showcase for Joshua Bell, as I was expecting it to be; Sam Bush & Mike Marshall both add their unique genius to bear. It has it's good foot-stomping pieces (Death by Triple Fiddle!) but also has some really good nearly classical pieces. This is a one-of-a-kind album that I've listened to dozens of times since getting it a couple months ago.

3 out of 5 stars Short Trip Home.......2004-02-12

I am sorry to say that this album did not meet my expectations . For such great artists there is a disturbing sameness to all the tunes. I listened to the CD numerous times thinking that maybe I am missing something but alas...like Miles Davis once said "This is some boring s...."
Sorry if I offended anyone out there and my apologizes to the artists.

5 out of 5 stars best of its genre.......2003-08-20

I have long been a "newgrass" fan, following the likes of David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, et al, for more than two decades. I have admired their craftsmanship, their passion, their virtuosity. Over the years, some of these gifted musicians have left the "newgrass" field, whether for brief journeys to other genres, or adopting that new style of music entirely. It is no surprise that some have gravitated to classical music: these guys are incredibly accomplished musicians, with the chops to make it happen. Thus, we see, eg, a Mark O'Connor move almost exclusively to the classical field. Edgar Meyer, who of course was classically trained to begin with, has spent virtually all of his time in that realm over the past decade.

Cross-over, as others have observed, is a horse of a different color. Efforts to play in another's ballpark have yielded inconsistent results. For my money, eg, Edgar's collaboration with Bela & Mike Marshall, is largely unsuccessful. Some of the O'connor/ Meyer / Yo Yo Ma pieces are brilliant; others lag badly. Attempts to infuse those disks with further pop sensability by adding the occasional vocal by James Taylor or Allison Krauss fall flat.

Which brings us to Short Trip Home. This is, in my opinion, the best of the bluegrass/classical crossover genre. Meyer's compositional brilliance take center stage. The title track speaks of Copland in a simple, understated way. Hang Hang will get you rocking in a way classical music seldom does. If I knew sighs & weeps, and is brilliantly evocative. Death by Triple Fiddle is a workout for all of the players (and a wonder to see live). Throughout, Joshua Bell's playing is a delight. For me, some of the duos are a bit of a drag at the end of the disk: the pieces seemed a little empty without Sam Bush's mandolin and Mike Marshall's guitar work. But I quibble. If you are a fan of newgrass music, you probably already have this disk: if not, get it. I can't speak from the perspective of a classical fan coming to the crossover from that background, but I can say that anyone who is openminded toward great music should find something to enjoy here.

4 out of 5 stars Very Solid.......2002-09-02

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I must admit that when I bought it, I was caught up in the "O' Brother, Where art thou?" frenzy - so after the first playing of this disc I was momentarily struck by one of those, "what the heck did I order THIS for" moments. While there is an obvious Appalachian influence, this is not a collection of old-time thigh slapping tunes. This is well constructed, beautiful instrumental (only) music with a Blue Ridge flavor. It's even possible to say that there is more of a New Age feel here than a Southen one. The music is mostly upbeat, though there is a nice mix of fast and slow tunes. This album will appeal to those who are more inclined towards classical music than those who are inclined to 1930s and 40s traditional Bluegrass. God bless you if you're inclined to both.

5 out of 5 stars Not A FAN.......2001-02-22

I'm not a fan of any genre of music, but as they say about art, I know what I like. And I like this. It has rhythm that reached into me, not even categorizable all the time. I had heard a portion of it on National Public Radio and looked for it on Amazon as soon as I got home and placed the order - everything sounded just as beautiful as the one piece I had heard just a portion of.

As Darol and Mike have both learned so much about life and music since then, they hoped to extrapolate on what would become a lot of folks favorite instrumental recording. The wish to make a musical message from the future that would reflect their present emotional, intellectual and spiritual selves. They tried to not get too hung up on perfection but to communicate a vibe; to showcase the glorious sounds of their string instruments playing music in a space big enough to do it in.

5 out of 5 stars Reinventing tradition while keeping the vibe organic and stimulating.......2007-05-08

Playing Time - 53:28 -- George Harrison once stated, "It doesn't matter if you are the greatest guitar player in the world, if you're not enlightened, forget it." Conceived as a sequel to the monumental 1985 album "Chiaroscuro" (on the Windham Hill label) that sold 65,000 copies in five years, "Woodshop" captures the enlightenment in each and every note, as well as with the silent spaces left between them. "Chiaroscuro" was not their first release together, however. In 1983, they had put out "The Duo" on Rounder Records. And since "Chiaroscuro," Marshall and Anger have collaborated on a 1998 "Christmas Heritage" project and five other fine CDs between 1999-2002 on Alison Brown's Compass Records (New Grange, Anger-Marshall Band JAM, Brand New Can, At Home and on the Range). If you're a musician, there's even a Mel Bay publication ("The Mike Marshall Collection") that includes standard music notation and mandolin tablature for 11 of his compositions (seven drawn from Marshall/Anger albums in the past). Besides proficient musicianship. what's always impressed me about these guys is that everything they've done has creativity, strength, and lasting power. More than just string music on viagra, "Woodshop" is worthy of being heard over and over again to appreciate the nuances of each piece.

The substantive body of Woodshop's 51-minute musical journey is nine instrumental compositions that feature Mike and Darol's violins, mandolins, guitars, mandocello, mandola, and cello. Of particular curiosity is a piece like "Replaceitall" also with Darol's rhythm programming, mystery slap beat, and shakers. It's a "kind of tribute to the Rolling Stones," and the title refers to Keith Richards' 1970s buzz about getting all his blood replaced in Switzerland before going on tour. In a similar vein and arranged with numerous instruments playing the melody in unison, Marshall's "The Creep" has such instruments as bass altered mandocello, hyper-mando, and electro-banjo-creepola. With many other strings in the mix, the folkestra sound is low, eerie and hypnotic. Whether the multi-tracking achieves the sensation of fear, repugnance, and downright creepiness is up to a listener's imagination and perception. As for me, upon initial listens of this disc, I did tend to favor more straightforward compositions that make more traditionally-based and focused statements. These included Hearts Wait, Peter Pan, Slip and Slide, Bach Up, and The Unbearable Gift. Over seven minutes, "Borealis" begins with just mandocello and violin before the song's genesis dynamically takes us into a full sound based on Mike's fantasy of having an entire audience pull out their instruments and jam along while marching towards the stage. Whatever happened to the fantasy of just having teary-eyed teenage girls rushing the stage? In keeping with the need for breathing room and transition, the 51-minute musical journey also has five short (one minute or less) interludes from beginning to end of the CD.

Four of the tracks feature some splendid bass or percussion accompaniment by other consummate musicians. Two cuts (Hearts Wait, The Unbearable Gift) have the inimitable Todd Phillips on bass. It brought back memories of New Grange days in the late-1990s when Mike, Darol and Todd played in that band with Tim O'Brien and Alison Brown. Earlier in Woodshop's set, "Peter Pan" includes Phil Aaberg (piano), Todd Sickafoose (upright bass), and Aaron Johnston (shaker, cymbals). "Who Had Whom?" includes Michael Manring (electric bass) and Aaron Johnston (percussion). All guest artists have highly-acclaimed credentials and reputations as virtuosos. Manring had a long association with Windham Hill Records, and he's a gifted composer of experimental music. Manring's collaboration with Anger and Marshall goes back as far as the early-1980s when all three played in Montreux (with Barbara Higbie and Andy Narell). A San Francisco native, the versatile Todd Sickafoose studied and performed in Los Angeles for six years before returning to the Bay Area in 1999. Montanan Philip Aaberg is a world-class keyboardist and composer who is comfortable in many genres and whose 2002 "Live From Montana" album was nominated for a Grammy. A graduate of Wichita State University's music program, Aaron Johnston is a versatile percussionist who also appeared with Anger & Marshall on their 1999 album, JAM. He currently performs with Brazilian Girls.

Marshall and Anger are now on the new Adventure Music label that wants to build a cadre of top musicians from North and South America who play unadorned, rhythmic and raw acoustic music. It's a good fit, and "Woodshop" illustrates the musicians' continual learning, logical progression and development. Marshall sees glimmers of a new musical style emerging that really incorporates many styles into one global sound. Darol and Mike have always been inspired to break down barriers between genres, and to cross boundaries between songwriting and improvisation. "Woodshop" displays elements of jazz, chamber music, folk, bluegrass and experimental music. Discovery and versatility create a fresh acoustic sound rooted in tradition. Mike and Darol continue to show that tradition can be reinvented to keep the vibe organic and stimulating. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

When Bill Monroe pushed the mandolin forward as a lead instrument, he opened a Pandora's box of musical possibilities, but even he couldn't have imagined a recording like this. Neither classical nor jazz nor bluegrass, the sound owes much to David Grisman--whom Marshall studied under and Thile worshipped--who just called it "dawg music." Call these live instrumentals "cat music": slinky, cool, effete, at times sphinx-like, at times blissed out on improvisational 'nip. Culled from a range of small-theater concerts in the winter of 2003, the set emphasizes original compositions--some written collaboratively--and one Bach revision, plus a blazing Bulgarian folk tune. Though writing credits are split evenly, Marshall is the de facto leader here. His jaunty, funky rhythms keep Thile's capricious twists grounded through the time shifts of "The Only Way Out," and his playful countermelodies turn the pastoral, seven-minute excursion "Joy Ride in a Toy Car/Hey Ho" into an experiment from a time machine set to either 1740 or 2740. The improvisation on a Bach violin partita, however, conveys the warmest, clearest melody, while "Sedi Donka" deserves its own genre: thrashgrass. Hearing these two maestros, the most expert mandolinist will likely succumb to despair--albeit a dizzying, lyrical, even beautiful despair. --Roy Kasten

If you know what's good for you, you'll buy this album. If you don't buy this album...well, I don't even want to think about that possibility. However bad or good your life is, listening to this music will improve it.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent........2007-02-09

Gorgeous, fascinating, mind-altering musical collaboration. I can't stop listening to these pieces. Each one is different and each one is a seamless fabric made up of many adventures. This album captures the meeting of two national treasures at their best - if you love music, you owe it to yourself to spend some time with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-01-04

I love this cd...at first I thought it would simply be pleasant "background music" (which is is) but found that I couldn't help but be engaged with every song. The more I listen to it, the more I find and I am always amazed. Highly recommended..Chris Thile rocks my world!

5 out of 5 stars The duo works well together to create nuance and significant emotional content.......2006-03-14

Playing Time - 53:00 -- With Mike Marshall in the left speaker, and Chris Thile in the right, "Live Duets" captures two virtuoso mandolin masters at work. After the opening cut of their composition, "Shoulda Seen It Comin'," we can hear one of the players comment, "We're gonna have fun tonight!" And that is no doubt why this record was made ... for us to enjoy the fun and energy of their 16 strings in consummate performance. After the second cut, Mike says, "This is fun!" Based on their power and strength, the dynamic duo could very well be two super heroes in disguise. This sequel to their successful 2003 collaborative effort, "Into the Cauldron," takes us into some similarly adventurous territory. To these guys, Mandoville has no city limits. Four cuts feature one of the guys playing mandocello, and one of those (Thile's "Hualalai") actually has Marshall on both mandola and mandocello.

There are a couple ways to tune into the music of this indefatigable duet. One is to listen very intently to appreciate the sensational musical telepathy and groove happening between the two. Mandolin players might want to follow this course. Another approach is to merely relax and let the notes and rhythms casually weave their way through a Zen-like atmosphere in search of truth and understanding. To me the players' minds seem clear of all limitations as they strive for oneness in their music. They realize that there's really only one way that they can collaboratively succeed - and that is along a musical path that is straight, open, wide, and free of obstructions. A traditional Bulgarian tune, "Sedi Donka," begins with Thile demonstrating the complicated rhythm to the audience ... long, short, short, long, short, short, short, short, long, short, short. The song's genesis includes aqueous improvisation and tremolo built around the tune's unique melody.

Through invisible, sound does have much color. Marshall and Thile use their instruments in much the same way that Monet and Piccasso used paintbrushes. The juxtaposition of one's notes with the other's creates each piece's coloring. Notice how their sonic colors work together to produce feelings. I was very happy to see a delicate piece like Marshall's 2-minute "'Til Dawn" breathe some slower air into the overall set. With high musical intellect, good ears, and considerable sensitivity, the duo works well together to create nuance and significant emotional content. Check out their musical canvas to discover the special quality of their sound. As with most live albums, applause between songs can be a little annoying. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Genius cannot begin to describe this........2006-03-03

Have you listened to this album yet? If not, you are leading a sad, sad life. I am beginning to think that Chris Thile could take a poo on a mandolin and it would sound amazing. This is my first taste of Mike Marshall and I wonder why I went so long without him. Just buy it. If you don't like it, you don't know what good mandolin playing is.

The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason Verlinde

Great violin, appalachian music, brings out your country roots, beautiful song by Allison Krauss, good mix of slow and up beat songs, excellent cd!

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a yawn-er.......2003-04-22

If you are planning to open up a high-end gift shop specializing in handcrafted wind chimes and micro-bakery scone mixes and the like, then you must have this CD playing for your customers. It might have a certain appeal there that it did not find in my living room. Not to say that the musicianship is not utterly outstanding, which it is most certainly. Aside from Short Trip Home, which is why I purchased this CD in the first place, I found the rest of the pieces somewhat vapid considering the caliber of the artists. Again, it has its appeal in an easy listening realm, but this was not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely good music!.......2002-05-04

Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played
beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!

Listening to Into the Cauldron, a collection of mandolin duets by Mike Marshall and Chris Thile, can be a frustrating experience--in the best possible way. It's definitely not the playing. Marshall, a veteran of such seminal acoustic bands as the David Grisman Quintet, and Thile, the mandolin wunderkind of Nickel Creek, sound better than ever. No, the problem is in the variety of styles on display. After hearing Marshall and Thile dance across the strings on "Fisher's Hornpipe," you'll wish this CD was a collection of fiddle tunes. When they trade licks on "Scrapple from the Apple," you long for more bop tunes. Their too-brief version of one of Bach's Goldberg Variations only whets your appetite for a mandolin version of the complete composition. And the duo's original tunes seamlessly blend elements from all of these styles, and more, as if mixing James Brown's rhythms, Bill Monroe's melodies, and Stravinsky's harmonies is the most natural thing in the world. Listening to Into the Cauldron is frustrating because it's only one CD, and Marshall and Thile obviously have more than enough musical ideas to fill a dozen more. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Astounding virtuosity.......2005-06-05

If you're stuck in old-time or blugrass mando playing, this CD is NOT for you. If, however, you love the mandolin and are eager to hear it explored in all its facets, this IS the recording for you. Bach, Charlie Parker, and a hornpipe thrown in for good measure. And you'll love Mike Marshall's deep-voiced mandocello playing. (I've already pulled out my instrument catalogs to check the prices on this unusual instrument.) This CD will be in my player for some time to come.
To be balanced, I have two problems. First, there's a tad too much reverb or "distance" in the sound. The liner notes say that it was recorded at a studio, but then talk about "Acoustic space enhancement" being done at some Congregational church. Does this mean that they played the recording in the church, and re-recorded it as it was being played? That's goofy. If that's what they did, they should stop. Whatever they did, they should stop and give us clear, up-front sound.
Second, the total running time is 45:51. With the ever escalating price of music, I expect a full CD's worth of tunes.
But actually, if I didn't stop to write this review, I might not have thought about these problems. The CD is playing right now, and it's incredible. I WILL buy more Marshall and Thile, and I'll do it soon.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing but..........2004-11-24

this is definitely not background music--it is the New Acoustic
equivalent of the Hellecasters or Vai/Satriani/Malmsteen etc:
Fast, flashy and technically outstanding. I find this music to be
overwhelming and don't listen to it much. The instruments are
not close mic'd as in most New Acoustic music. It sounds more
like a classical music recording (the "sound of the room" ie.
natural reverb, is very present). I think this dilutes the
sound and makes it less immediate.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Reviving.......2004-01-07

I was so astounded when I got to see these amazing men play together in Redwood city at the Little Fox Theater. Their music is so pure and true that it does true justice to bluegrass. And not only is the cd remarkable the men are amazing souls themselves. I met the two of them and Chris has such a beautiful soul. Their humble look at music is refreshing to see in someone I idolize. They are human heroes, they don't get enough credit for such masterpieces. This cd is a tribute to any living person able to hear and breathe music. Thanks for another hit guys. You two are remarkable together!!

4 out of 5 stars Masterful and innovative, but with a few flaws.......2003-12-16

This CD is a collection of original works and covers by diverse artists. The styles include classical, jazz, celtic and unique variations on progressive acoustic forms. Once you've sorted out who is playing (Chris on the left, Mike on the right), you begin to recognize the elegant, frenetic and a bit more subdued playing of Chris Thile and the louder, less precise and some would argue fuller tones of Mike Marshall. Many of the compositions are exceptional. However, the acoustics feel a bit distant as if you were in a room with too many echoes to be optimal for acoustic listening. I felt there was too much strumming, but this is a slight gripe. Also, in the interest (apparently) of trying everything you can do with mandolins, there is an excessive amount of banging and thudding. Some of this works. Some of it seems like noise. Overall, there is a lot of genius to enjoy on this progressive acoustic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Masterful, but with a few flaws (part deux).......2003-12-05

One thing about this CD that takes some getting used to is the apparent journey Chris Thile is on. His early records (ages 13 and 16) are amazing and melodic to a fault. As he grows up, he is obviously experimenting and stretching his tastes to the more "progressive" side: more dissonance, less melodic. This album has some ragged edges that may be disturbing to those of us who listen to his first 25 published songs (on Leading Off and Stealing Second) and are amazed at the variety, clarity and vitality of them. "Not all that Wander" balances melodic writing with more complex forms. It is superb and a bit more "grown up." But where is he heading now? I'm going along for the ride, but I hope his more melodic composing days are not fading as he grows up.
