Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

A little New York love for the Robbers.......2007-02-03

I have listened to this EP quite a few times now and I do think that Ben Trokan's delivery sometimes sounds like Britt Daniel's (from Spoon), but I can't honestly fool myself into thinking that it's Spoon performing. The Robbers have their own sound, despite the vocal similarities. The one slow song, Opal Ann, has piano that carries the melody softly & sweetly. The other 5 songs, all fast rockers, sound almost like they could make it to regular radio, but honestly, who wants THAT nowadays? Sticking to indie label spirit & domain, the band can later change style, experiment with words & music, instead of being pigeon-holed & dictated by the hand of the big label. It's a promising early EP with an addicting sound for fans of guitar/piano/male-singer rock music. Great modern sound; can't wait to hear their 2007 offerings.

Robbers On SPOON Street.......2005-02-22

I think this is a really good CD, but unfortunately, Robbers On High Street sound EXACTLY like the band SPOON (Austin, TX).

I was given a copy of Fine Lines and had to remove it from my CD player and inspect the label to assure myself this wasn't SPOON's Britt Daniel singing! Its uncanny!! That being said, I guess its better that ROHS sounds like SPOON, than say, Limp Biskit of Nickelback.

For anyone who's never heard SPOON, try picking up Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight, or the EXCELLENT Soft Effects ep (if you can find it). SPOON's been around for more than 10 years & with each successive release has grown into easily the Best Band in Texas (IMHO).

Don't get me wrong -- were it not for them being SPOON-alikes, I think this CD would easily warrant 4+ stars. As it is, I'll give it 3. Still a good CD, just a tad too familiar...

I can't wait to hear the new stuff!

The idea that this cd is only 6 tracks long shouldn't scare you from buying it. Very good sound from these guys...haunting melodies and powerful guitars.

This CD would be quite exciting if it weren't for the fact that they sound EXACTLY like Spoon. ROHS is a good band, but everything they do well is done better by Spoon. The singer even sounds exactly like Britt Daniel. It's weird.

Incidental music at its best.......2005-10-24

Michael Galasso's first release under his own name since 1984's Scenes consists of 16 aural vignettes covering a refreshingly broad scope of moods and styles. While listening to 30-second clips tells you very little about certain albums, in this case you'll find out all you need to know. Each track sets up a certain mood or sensation and maintains it, for the most part, throughout. Any development you get is relatively subtle. Calling this disc background music is certainly not an insult, but this music doesn't stand up to studied listening. Having said that, it is still, with a few notable exceptions, a beautiful album.

ECM's typically-pristine production captures the performances exceptionally well. Galasso's violin sounds gorgeous, and the different percussive textures that Frank Colón produces are almost magical. Nice double-bass work by Marc Marder as well. However, the guitar work of Terje Rypdal sticks out, and not in a good way. Take "The Other," for instance. Not even Manfred Eicher's sonic prowess can do anything to reduce the displeasure you get from hearing Rypdal's guitar tone. His is the reverb-drenched buzzsaw distortion tone that you hear 13-year-old nu metal shredders-to-be use as they test out import Strat copies through 15-watt solid state amps at Guitar Center. On this track and others, it spoils the otherwise-gorgeous sound of the album. In addition, some of Rypdal's playing itself comes close to noodling. Granted, he does have some nice moments, but I'd sooner not hear him.

Still, this is quite an intriguing disc, though maybe not one you'll continue to cherish for years and years.

Broadening his sonic palette.......2005-06-17

With the addition of Terje Rypdal (guitar), Mark Marder (double-bass), and Frank Colon (percussion), mysterioso violinist Michael Galasso significantly expands the aural soundscape in this follow-up to his 1984 disc Scenes. How many other musicians wait more than two decades to come out with a second release? That's what Galasso has done, which, one supposes, does little to undo his reputation as a first-class musical iconoclast.

And the sounds contained in this provocative disc further that reputation. This collection of mostly miniatures mainly featuring the leader's unique violin stylings does open things out in the direction of jazz beat/chamber jazz/world metal styles--a quite beguiling mix, if you ask me. The inclusion of guitarist Terje Rypdal was a stroke of genius. The longtime ECM-label staple here plies his rock-tinged improvisational skills to maximum effect. Check out his playing on, esp., "The Other." The leader seems to restlessly shift from one soundscape to another, moving with ease from drone to Nordic fiddle music to world jazz to Gothic to New Music to classical to chamberish ambient to Middle Eastern sounds, all with stunning effect.

It certainly helps to have completely simpatico bandmates. And one could hardly ask for better interpreters than Rypdal, Marder, and Colon. Each brings a wealth of recorded and live-music experience, plus an ability to completely tune in to the weird vibe that leader Galasso exudes.

Certainly not for everybody, but anyone with an adventurous spirit looking for highly idiosyncratic but brilliantly conceived and played instrumental music will want to check out this remarkable recording.

Since 1980 Paul Skiff has been hushing crowds with his musical poetry that combines raw, aggressive emotion with a shocking logic. It has been difficult for the cultural establishment to find him acceptable.

Developed through improvisation, the recordings on 'total juju' were captured live to preserve the immediacy of Paul's collaboration with melodic and rhythm-making musicians. The results are a wholly new style that reconciles American and African musical influences with what Miguel Algarin, the founder of the world renowned Nuyorican Poets Cafe, calls "an amazing passion and clarity."

Co-produced with Hui Cox, producer of Grammy Award-nominated recordings, 'total juju' also contains subtle beatboxing and incantatory vocalectrics from the sensational a capella artist Kid Lucky.

What you will hear on 'total juju' is a collection of eleven innovative, startling compositions that are by turns stark, grim, sexual and liberatory; a densely moody tour de force created from a small ensemble of master musicians and Paul Skiff's uncompromising words. Sophisticated guitar work along with rhythms owed to Africa, supported on riff-driven bass lines and complimented or sparked on by unpredictable beatboxing, all composing a foundation for words spoken and sung that shift from melodious to unhumanly mechanical, from lush whisper to muscular declamation. From the totally unclassifyable 'pulsedrink' and 'laughing senators' to hints of jazz in 'ride around the sun' to the dark almost-rock sounds of 'thirst' and 'honey jar' to the invocations of 'lovebite' and 'blessventure' the sound is urban, mysterious, cult-like, and completely at ease with the difficulty it presents.
