5 out of 5 stars Still amazing after hundreds of spins.......2007-04-28

I've been listening to this amazing disk almost constantly since its release. The mandolin/mandocello/tenor guitar duets from Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda on the CD and DVD are pure delight. The recording quality is exceptionally clear, perhaps the finest recording to date of mandolin tones.

Mike's playing is masterful, with technique in total service to his passion. His tone is clear and bright, and his solos and fills are exquisite. Hamilton's playing is audacious, edgy, explosive, and daring, delivering some of the most beautiful mandolin tones, and some of the most dazzlingly fast and sparkling solos I've ever heard.

My personal favorites after many spins are the opening track "Receita de Samba", followed by "Sao Jorge" (so beautiful!), "Egypt", "Big Country", "Valse em Si", "Cochichando", "Blackberry Blossom/Apanhei-te Cavaquinho", "Pra Sempre", and "Desvairada".

The DVD is great with a particularly wonderul version of "Brejeiro" which I much prefer to the the studio version on the CD, "Blackberry Blossom/Apanhei-te Cavaquinho", and "Receita de Samba". I only wish the DVD was much much longer!

You will love this music.

5 out of 5 stars Creative cross-cultural musical conversations convey a variety of moods.......2006-12-22

Playing Time - 1:04:44 (CD) plus a 3-track DVD -- To call their duo album "New Words" is very indicative of the creative cross-cultural musical conversations that Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda engage in during this generous hour-long set. There are some pieces that start with whispering sentiments ("Valsa em Si"), while others convey much more heated and fiery exchanges ("Desvairada"). With a healthy portion of five original pieces (Egypt, Ham & Mike, New Words, Pra Sempre, Valsa em Si), this album also illustrates the exceptional songwriting abilities of the pair.

Mike Marshall's innovative playing has been well-documented in the past with such bands or artists as Psychograss, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Jovino Santos Neto and Choro Famoso. At the 2004 Lunel, France Mandolin Festival, another artist-in-residence was 30-year-old Brazilian music master Hamilton de Holanda. The collaborative communication of Mike's "new words' with Ham's "novas palavras" illustrate a fluency that results in smoothly flowing, expressive music. Why, there's even some verbal scat to close "Sao Jorge."

Mike adeptly plays mandolin on all but three tracks where he picks mandocello or tenor guitar to convey different moods. Hamilton plays the 10-string bandolim except on three tracks where he picks Irish bouzouki. Without any low end or percussion in the mix, it's hard to say how radio-friendly the dialogue is, and that may discourage some DJs from spinning such a disc. However, in such an artist collaboration, the sparsity of sound actually provides much of its spark. It allows us to focus on the masters bantering and hear all the new words clearly. Take "Ham & Mike," for example, with the two voices having a rather sparkling discussion. It was perfect motivational background music for a busy day at work. At times, there are so many words (notes) being exchanged, that the conversations become a tad difficult to comprehend. The sheer extent of this body of music, that also includes a 3-track DVD recorded at the 2005 Savannah Music Festival, is somewhat mind-boggling. Being a good listener will allow you to appreciate how a standard fiddle tune like "Blackberry Blossom" can segue into Ernesto Nazareth's classic choro "Apanhei-te Cavaquinho." It's a small world now, and taking a trip from Appalachia to Brazil is not that hard to fathom. But then throw in stops along the way in Mike Marshall's "Egypt," Bela Fleck's "Big Country," or on the beautiful Azorean island of "Sao Jorge," and you'll appreciate both the worldy and wordy aspects of this album's healthy musical and innovative discourse. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

    Product Description

""I intended to record this album on the road using technology which favors music (a good microphone, my laptop and an M-box). The concept has to do with a place where our souls can experience the quietness and restfulness and for me this is that soundtrack. It's not a mandolin exercise or practice, but simply the enjoyment of playing. I have wanted to record a CD like this for a long time so that I could capture the intimacy of the mandolin, generally reserved for hotel rooms and my home. There are no arrangements, just songs that live in my unconscious. Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, Cartola, Silvio Caldas, Orestes Barbosa, Paulo Jobim, Ronaldo Bastos, Noel Rosa, Vadico, Dorival Caymmi, Guinga & Paulo César Pinheiro, and there are 3 of my compositions"".

Hollywood is the name for filmes, but, I safely say, BRASIL is the name for musicians!

In the tradition , well yes and no, of legends as Jacobo do Bandolim, Joel Nascimento, Armandinho,..maybe more the heir to the throne of "mestre dos mestres' as the virtuoso of the bandolim and Brasilian instrumental musics~~ This recording makes another case that technical wizardry CAN still be melodically and harmonically inventive, not just a show of musical muscles!

Hamilton de Holanda has recorded another gem of traditional ritmos and brazjazz in his compositions, and the band of "craques" even as incredible! (Bahia from hermeto on drums, and young tanents as Daniel Santiago , violão, André Vasconcellos , bass and , equal to Hamilton as front line soloist, Gabriel Grossi on chromatic harmonica.

Inventive, snaking lines of melody, passionate in each solo, and the chordal harmonic approach that sets Música Instrumental Brasileira apart as some the most special sounds on this bola confusão planeta, Hamilton has managed a unique technique, enabling polifonic sounds , and also has added the low "C" extra string for further range on the instrument, giving ability for further expansion of ideas, textures, and timbres.

Each track a treasure, whether remake of what can now be called a "Standard" just as in USA jazz musics, Gilberto Gil's "Processão", or his amazing tribute to O Bruxo, "Hermeto 'Ta Brincando" (Hermeto is Playing), One of the more interesting musicians that every "músico" should know, and the casual listening fan will enjoy.

This grupo is well integrated , as they sound like they have been making musics together for 1000 years.

Dont miss this one, avaliable in Brasil on Biscoito Fino label, and USA release on the wonderful label/labour of love, Adventure musics.
either way, profundo e brilhante , grande música na qual se ouça todo instrumento! A band of equals, a band of visionaries!

5 out of 5 stars How much can you do with four hands???.......2003-06-06

How much can you do with four hands??? Can they make beautiful music with 10, 14, or 16 strings? For a pianist, you may not think it is big deal to play with 16 strings at a time when you can do 60 strings or more with 4 hands.

Excluding the piano, this is one of the best Pan-Brazillian instrumental albums you can get with 10-16 strings, depending on what the guitar family instruments Marco Pereira and Hamilton de Holanda used on a particular song/piece.

"Luz Das Cordas" consists fine samples of Brazilian string music styles. From early 20th century choro masters Pixinguinha, Luiz Gonzaga, etc. to modern compositions by the performers themselves, this album mix well guitar, mandolin, cavaco, and percussions as they did to the music varieties stylishly.

Even though Marco Pereira and Hamilton De Holanda are qualified to show their dazzling techniques, the music is light-hearted, energetic, and sensible. It is easy to listen to. Some Jazz like improvisational segments were seamlessly integrated into Brazilian rooted arrangements to make spontaneous and pleasant atmosphere.

A few tracks stand out are "1X0" by Pixinguinha, "Luz Das Cordas" and "Bate-coxa" by Marco Pereira, and "Las Abejas" by Agustin Barrios Mangore. Even a classic piece like "1X0" which has been recorded numberous times, Pereira and De Holanda is still able to shed new light in their interpretation. "Las Abejas" usually appears on classic guitar menu and has been recorded by maestros such as John Williams. The Pereira-De Holanda version is nothing short of virtuosity, humor, and freshness.

The recording studio did a fairly good job on the sound quality. Not an audiophile recording, the bass has reasonable extension and mid-range is lively when the higher frequencies are just a bit too thin, noticeable especially on Mandolin solos. The phamflet looks like one from a 5-dollar pirated CD. It was poorly designed and printed. Regardless of the `look', the music is absolutely fantastic.

If you like Brazilian instrument music in a simple and subtle way, (no over production, over intrumentation and over technically showiness), this is your CD. Those two master guitarist/mandolinist will surely bring you on a pleasant journey like a sunny breezy spring afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Choro Revivalist on the Bandolim.......2006-10-06

An amazing array of modern choro tunes taken the music of the prgenitors of Jacob do Bandolim and Luprece Miranda. He has an explosive and unique style on his 10-stringed custom mandolin. (that low C really allows him to create really complex jazz chords) Such creative playing unique to any American mando player. I am not sure exactly when I first heard his music, but I am so glad I did. I think this particular CD is his finest to date. If you are a mando picker, a choro fan, or just love good music pick this up and you will not be dissapointed. Simply one of THE BEST MANDOLIN(Bandolim) players on this great planet right now.

      5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Jazz.......2005-09-17

This CD is a beautifully refreshing blend of various Brazilian instrument sounds, including the bandolim and the seven-string guitar. The energy is soaring, spontaneous and full of vitality, while the music is expertly played in really intricate and sophisticated compositions. Not being an expert in this field, I would describe this as Brazilian jazz, combining contemporary ideas with traditional South American themes in a skillful, inventive manner. Hamilton's 10-string bandolim stands out with its light-hearted brilliance and wide range of tonal qualities.
I highly recommend this CD, especially to all plucked-strings lovers.

5 out of 5 stars This CD totally knocks me out........2004-06-20

I heard of de Holanda almost by accident last winter. Bitten by the Choro "bug" years ago, I'm on a continual pursuit of this Brazilian art. I love the classic Jacob recordings, but they carry the baggage of ancient recording equipment and studio technique. Still Jacob possesses a timeless charm.
Enter young de Holanda. The first cut rewards the listener with his arranging prowess as well as his fiery delivery and pyrotechnical playing. As if that weren't enough, he still demonstrates his respect for the Choro tradition with masterful presentations of Hermeto, Jacob, and Pixinguinha, a true tribute to his roots.
What truly captivates me is the "next generation" harmonic vocabularies of the later 20th century polytonality, taking established Brazilian traditions to a whole new level.
For those north of the border, think a Brazilian "Chris Thile," the same brilliant technique that never buries a deep musical soul and sensibility.
This one's a keeper!!! Now I'm on a quest for more!

5 out of 5 stars Hamilton's Triumphal Live Concert Recording of Solo 10-string Bandolim .......2005-10-06

A live performance of unaccompanied mandolin/mandola is a rarity in and of itself. But that it is an electifying tour-de-force of compositions and virtuoso perfomance by a major world class talent makes this CD a simply stunning.

Hamilton de Hollanda, from Brazilia the national capital in central Brazil, is emerging as a major exponent of Brazilian choro/jazz. He performs on the (currently) 4 volumes of Beatles 'n' Choro, as well as his duos with Dois do Ouro, Marco Perreira and other collaborations, he has published a book of his compositions, and a concerto for bandolim and orchestra all before the age of 30. This summer he taught for two weeks at the California Brazil Camp at Cazadero.

The music he makes on this CD performing on the 10-string (5 pairs tuned C-G-D-A-E), can be sweet and soothing as easily as it is pulsating and dynamic. To say he takes his instrument to new heights would be an understament.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasurable Brasilian guitar album.......2007-01-28

Although I am a big fan of Brazilian music this is the first time I come across Hamilton de Holanda. I have to say that not everyone can appreciate solo guitar performances and this was a highly pleasurable experience for me and for another Brazilian music fan we shared the experience together, well done and highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars um dos mais respeitados novos músicos brasileiros.......2006-11-11

Original e criativo, virtuosística e emocionante...these describe well this young carioca (born Rio d..) born of a musical family, and has become one of the new, what was called in USA and UK of their recent vintage improvisors, YOUNG LIONS of the brasil's instrumental musics scene.
This CD special, recorded in Milano, Italia.

SOLO bandolim, with some overdub. Hamilton exhibits again both his mastery of the instrument, but also his deep harmonies and incredible melodicism as he performs his own compositions, and of mestre Jobim ('Samba do Avião' and 'Eu Não Existo Sem Você',),
Morricone's lovely 'Cinema Paradiso' and an incredible version of a "Standard" now for Brasilian improvisors , Hermeto Pascoal's classic "Chorinho Pra Ele", the "Little Chorinho for him".
The bonus, The Italianu from Nice, France, the virtuoso of the sanfona, and fisarmónica (accordion!), Richard Galliano , 3 duet tracks, including Richard's homages to Brasil "Sertão" and "Sanfona".

Galliano, as Hamilton, a true master of his instrument, but both me NEVER let the virtuoistics get in the way of the incredible music!

Funky, meditative, and , just 100 % BRASILIAN! (with the French-italian kiss!)

Check out also, BOTH musician's small group recordings also, you will not be disappointed!

Many many more STARS than the Amazon allows, hahahaha!
