Mirabai’s stunning music pulls your senses into the world of their love, joy, and beauty. A great debut album.

Product Description
This album is a welcome addition to any collection of world music. Artists Angelika Baumbach and Markus Sieber perform together as Mirabai. This stunning debut album is a reflection of their diverse heritage with a mix of Spanish songs, songs from the Native Indian cultures and Gurmukhi mantraAs you listen to this album, the songs seep gently into your consciousness. The couples’ beautiful harmonies overlay the breath-taking harp, gentle nylon-string guitar, cello, woodwinds, keyboard, bass, and percussion. For listeners who don’t know Spanish, the booklet has English translations of all of their lyrics. The original writings in the album are poems written jointly by Markus and Angelika. The poetry is stunning, laying their love of life, the earth and each other before you with intense candor. These tracks are filled with love and longing. The first of these, the opening track Corazón seduces you into the world of their deep love with Angelika’s rich voice flowing through the sounds of cello, woodwinds, and harp. With lyrics that translate as "heart of my heart how you make me beat, a battle takes place in my soul…" this song is a moving love song. The third and title track, Flores de Colores (Flowers of Colors), is a poem to the Earth and has a gentle, soothing melody. The other tracks have music as moving as the poetry, filling you up as you listen to them.Interlaced with their own poems are traditional chants from the Huichol, Zapotecos and Mapuche Indians. The second track, Hon Hon Hon, is a chant invoking the spirit of the eagle to bring the rain. Kundalini Yoga practitioners will fall in love with their final track, Guru RamDas. Mixing two healing chants, Ra Ma Da Sa and Guru Guru Wahe Guru, this is a beautiful meditative track.

La 5a Estacion se avento con este cd.. Puedo escuchar el cd completo sin tener que cambiarle a ninguan cancion..Casi puedo decir que todas las canciones podrian pasar por secillos.. Se lo recomiendo a todos!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-06-11

This CD, "Flores de alquiler," contains some of the best music I have heard for a long time and is quickly becoming my favorite CD, out of my music both in Spanish and in English. There's not a single track on here that's not good, and Natalia's voice coupled with the guys' instrumentals makes for some incredible songs. I'm normally not a big fan of most women singers nor bands from Spain, but la 5a estación is just THAT good. My favorite tracks are "Daría", "Mi Ciudad", and "No hay perdón," followed closely behind by all the rest. You MUST check this group out.

I bought this CD without ever hearing this band before. It was recommended by Amazon and I just love all of the songs, the lyrics and the beat are a great mixture of rock and latin fusion. Natalia's voice is beautiful and each song has a great meaning. This CD Rocks!

This might just be the Hildegard CD you're having if you're having only one. Unlike CDs by the better-known Sequentia and Gothic Voices--all superb and highly recommended--here we get Hildegard sung by one voice, that of the lovely Rosa Lamoreaux, whose natural, warm, unaffected, but dramatically involved presentation keeps the listener riveted. She is supported by Tina Chancey and Scott Reiss (known collectively as Hesperus), who entwine the vocal lines with music for recorders, hammered dulcimer, vielle, viola da gamba, and other instruments--as well as performing three solos. Recorded in a soft-focus acoustic, this disc surrounds you with delicacy, devotion, and elegance--much the way Hildegard might have wanted it. Highly recommended to all lovers of beautiful music. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Extraordinary Music.......2005-07-22

This cd contains some of the most beautifully crafted and "luminous" music that I have ever heard. The quality of the musicianship is exquisite; the vocals and arrangments are superb. Is it possible to give a product ten stars? If so, then this recording deserves, at the very least, that rating.

5 out of 5 stars Voice and spirit of the angels!.......2004-02-27

This CD is a most heavenly creation of voice and music with Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux having the voice of an angel. It was like being lifted to heaven on angel's wings. I took this CD with me to the hospital when I had serious surgery recently. When the pain was at it's worst, I put this CD in my CD-walkman and was peacefully lulled into a most calm state. This was one of two CD's that I listened to while in the hospital, the other was Hildegard von Bingen: Ecstatic Chants, which was truly a CD of healing voice and music as well and also one that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Work stress reliver.......2001-09-23

I have it on my computer at work. People come it and ask me 1) where's the music coming from and 2) what is that? It's gorgeous!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sonic/spiritual experience.......1998-11-20

Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux has the voice of an angel and takes the listener to another plain in this magical recording. Hildegards music is universal and combines the wonderful detail of medieval precision with the soothing elements of chant.

This recording should be bought by anyone who enjoys early music or chant or the lyrical tones of a beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual elegance and simplicity.......1998-11-17

If one wishes to hear a spirit sing, if one wishes to steep in profound praise and prayer and peace, if one wishes to hear the sound of excellence...this is your best choice.

5 out of 5 stars Mas de 30 años despues... aun toca profundo.......2006-06-04

5 out of 5 stars One of his best albums.......2006-03-06

When he launched this album back in the mid seventies, it became an immediate success both in Cuba and abroad, especially in all of Latin America and Spain. Today is a true classic, and it's a must to anyone who collects or likes his music. Días y Flores (Days and Flowers) contains some of his best poetry and of his best music. It proves that Silvio is an artist in the broadest sense of the word.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Performances.......2007-07-11

Villancicos y Danzas Criollas is a homage to the cultural traditions of Iberia and Ibero-America, showing the influence of European traditions in the Americas. The Villancico (also called Chanzoneta) is a form of poetry that was adopted for use in secular songs and, in the 17th century, for Christmas carols (the modern usage of the word denotes a carol). The secular songs were gradually replaced by the Romance while the Christmas carol form became more popular. The typical lyrics of villancicos have two or three stanzas followed by a refrain. The most religious-oriented villancico of this collection is Hanacpachap Cussicuinin (from Lima) where the author asks for their prayer to be answered.

The transmission of musical culture is a favorite (and fascinating) subject for Jordi Savall and this CD includes some beautiful and rousing music. The CD begins with four selections reflecting Iberian music that sets the stage of presenting a song (usually) followed by a dance. Following this introduction we are off the Americas and music from Peru, Guatemala and Mexico.

As pointed out in the booklet, the colonial expansion that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries widen cultural connections to include Africa, Asia and the Americas, which is reflected in this collection of music. One will discover a mixing of African dance rhythms and percussion with European polyphony. This is nicely demonstrated by the first selection with its strong use of drums and bold brass playing combined with a fast-paced dance melody and mixed voices. The second work, by an anonymous composer, is quite a contrast with its more restrained and courtly rhythms played by string instruments without the percussion or brass. The Hanacpachap Cussicuinin is scored for percussion, brass and voices sounding like a solemn funeral procession and is followed by a beautifully played piece for harp and percussion from Mexico. The incomparable Montserrat Figueras sings with peerless passion and beauty, particularly in the short Tono Hidalgo of Juan Hidalgo. One could go on and on extolling the wonderful music of this CD, suffice it to say that among my collection of early music discs this one is at the top.

As with all of Jordi Savall's recordings the performance is excellent and beautifully balanced with voices and instruments receiving equal emphasis. If you do not have this disc and love early music get it without hesitation.

4 out of 5 stars Mucho me pesa la cabeza.......2007-07-02

Again and again we hear "Mucho me pesa la cabeza"..... "Much it pains my head."

This music is so ephemeral... so unique.... so mind massaging..... I love reading while it softly plays in the background in the room!

The massage is quite expansive!

Not a painful massage at all, but it does get inside your head!

5 out of 5 stars Just Get it!.......2006-08-20

It's hard to pick out anything special on this disk... everything is top-notch. The opening 'La Chacona' is a delight and it just gets better and better and better. The second piece definitely is having some fun setting the listener up for 'something.' The ritual piece is majestic while the tone changes again with the harp solo... Hesprion XX/XXI are treasures in the ocean of music.
Gracias, Senores!

only this to say: since the day it
arrived to my doorstep back in mid
December, I have listen to it daily,
not just few tracks, but the whole

5 out of 5 stars ýCreoleý Songs and Dances from Old Spain to the New World.......2004-05-16

An astonishing collection of vocal polyphony and dance music, largely from Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico. Performed with flair and feeling by the preeminent Spanish early-music ensemble of our time. Not to be missed!

My translation of the album title, given above, is not exact. "Criolla" can refer to anything Latin American, and a "villancico" is first and foremost a Spanish poetic genre from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Norton/Grove Concise Encyclopedia tells us that it was "originally derived from a medieval dance lyric and associated with rustic or popular themes." Certainly the rustic and popular loom large in this lively selection of Renaissance music. Hesperion XXI and its director Jordi Savall have often sampled folk styles in their imaginative reconstitutions of early performance tradition. So most of these selections get percussion accompaniment accentuating the dance element, while strumming guitars, castanets, maracas, and more are employed discreetly but effectively. Lusty and characterful vocal contributions come courtesy of La Capella Reial de Catalunya and soprano Montserrat Figueras, who takes a couple of fine solo turns. It's all recorded in a warm, resonant church acoustic.

In his liner notes, Prof. Rui Vieira Neri introduces the Spanish part of this collection by noting a long tradition of mixing high and low culture, not to mention Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultural elements in the art and music of the Iberian peninsula. And right away we get to hear a vocal chaconne (a dance imported from the Indies "by mail" according to Lope de Vega) and a Moresca "Di Perra Mora," with strong Arabic flavor and hints of 5/2 meter.

Of the New World selections, some of the most engaging combine indigenous languages with Netherlands musical style. The solemn processional hymn "Hancpachap cussicuinin," written by a native composer in the Quechua language of Peru, was also the first example of polyphony printed in the Americas. Gaspar Fernandes (1570-1629), chapel master at the Puebla cathedral, wrote a number of villancicos that mix Castilian with Nahuatl, the Aztec tongue, including "Tleycantimo choquiliua" on this recording. It is based on a local Indian dance, as is another Christmas villancico included here, "Ay que me abraso," which moves to the beat of the Mexican guaracha.

Bantu and Yoruba phrases crop up frequently in the refrains of the African-influenced numbers, so numerous in their day that they were customarily referred to in the old manuscripts as Negro, Negrilla, or Guineo. Savall includes three such pieces on this recording; they abound in the sort of rhythmic intricacies and call-and-response effects that Europeans already associated with Africa. Among the most infectious is "Antonya, Flasiquiya, Gasipá," in which the song's characters wake up after a long night of drinking and dancing in order to go to Bethlehem to pay homage to baby Jesus, where more carousing will be called for. Each refrain ends with the words "Mucho me pesa la cabeza": "Oh, my aching head."

I wouldn't want to give the impression that this music will appeal mostly to scholars. In fact, it is simply full of human joy, tenderness, and fun, qualities that leap across the centuries at us and need no special pleading, thanks to the terrific performances on this CD. You will enjoy it.

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to the honky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars dressed in black-j.cash tribute.......2007-05-27

not many tribute albums are worth a 2nd listen, not the case here however with the likes of hank III & rev.horton heat you can listen to this one over & over with out hearing a generic pop country artist murder a cash classic, most of the songs here are done quite well, some just stand out more than others,a must have for cash fans!

5 out of 5 stars The best tribute (so far).......2006-05-09

The whole spirit of this CD takes me back to my teenage years in the late '50s, when we listened to Johnny Cash's Sun singles (along with Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Haley) on the juke box. In addition to the excellent renditions of Cash's music, this collection introduced me to a few excellent singers who had somehow managed to slip by under my radar. In particular, I love Robbie Fulks' version of "Cry, Cry, Cry"--what a fantastic singer/songwriter! Surprisingly, the singer who sounds most like a young Cash (without seeming to imitate him) is the very Reverend Horton Heat on "Get Rhythm." Another is Chuck Mead's "There You Go." Hank III gives his own unique take on "Wreck of the Old '97." Sounding more like his own grandfather, it's certainly not the way Johnny Cash did it, but he nevertheless captures the bare tragedy and heroic spirit of the song. "Pack up Your Sorrows" was a favorite during the '60s, but I barely remember Johnny Cash singing it. The most familiar version was by Richard & Mimi Farina, and Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson faithfully capture the spirit of their version. The other song that stands out is "Straigh A's in Love" by Eddie Angel. It's often forgotten that Johnny Cash was not primarily a country singer. Beginning with his classic work at Sun Studio, he pretty much invented the rockabilly sound, and it is this spirit that is well represented here. Get this CD and keep it in your car to brighten up those pesky commutes.

4 out of 5 stars Straight A's 4 This Tribute Disc!.......2005-03-26

There is some excellent music on "Dressed In Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash." Chris Knight is one of those musicians that always sparks my interest; his version of "Flesh & Blood" is such a plaintive laid back reading of this song that it gives an emotional mix of loneliness, hope & desire. It closes the set, but is one of the highlights for me. Eddie Angel's rockabilly "Straight A's In Love" is a naughty little tune that puts a smile on my face each time it comes on the changer. :) Austin songwriter Damon Bramblett's take on "I'm Gonna Sit on the Porch & Pick on My Old Guitar" may not seem polished, but it does exude a warmth that brings me into the music. Chuck Mead from BR5-49 produced this disc and plays on every track. His lead vocals on "There You Go" set your toe tapping, "You're gone again, I should'a known I couldn't win...He's by your side, you're gonna break another heart, you're gonna tell another lie." The Mavericks' Raul Malo sounds a bit like Chris Isaak to me on the slow shuffle of "I Guess Things Happen That Way." Rodney Crowell has been recording a series of great solo sets as well as with the Notorious Cherry Bombs. Here he turns a straightforward reading of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen." Robbie Fulks' "Cry, Cry, Cry" booms with great energy. No one will ever replace Johnny Cash, but these artists do a great job with songs that he previously polished. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Tribute.......2004-02-24

Hank III's "Wreck of the Old '97" makes this disc worth owning. His daring to break out of the mold that so many other artists have poured this song into, while still respecting the original, is reason enough to add this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc with one flaw.......2003-12-18

This disc is awesome! There's no beating Rodney Crowell, Redd Volkaert, and couple others. Now, I'm a Hank Fan also, and love what III does with his grandpa's music, but as for Wreck of the Old 97, he should be locked up. I wouldn't appear on anything rewriting a song that's been done for the past 75 years. Johnny, Hank Snow, all the ones I'd heard stuck very close to Vernon Dalhart's recording from the late '20s. III's almost made this disc a clay pigeon.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-02-20

I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Expressive.......2007-02-17

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening Music.......2000-03-14

A wonderful CD, a hidden treasure, by an artist who has suffered for being born in the Age of Pavarotti. Nobody does this kind of music better than Domingo - you will be transported.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-12-10

This is Placido Domingo at his best--singing love songs in his native language. Very romantic and beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!.......1999-10-07

Love the C.D. as every one with the greatest voice ever! Placido Domingo is magnificent! The songs are lovely and the recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Ritmico, Romantico, Alegre, Gran Disco.......2007-06-09

Este es un disco diferente, con el toque de la musica de España, pero fresco, romantico, alegre y sensual. Indudablemente la mejor produccion de Rosario, voz de mujer intensa y tierna a la vez.
This it is a different disc, with the touch of the Spanish Music, but fresh, romantic, happy and sensual. Doubtlessly the best Rosario's production, voice of intense and tender woman simultaneously.
    Dont miss it!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!.......2006-05-20

I was in Spain a few years ago and I caught Rosario on the radio while driving between Barcelona and Cadaques. I immediately became addicted and bought this CD. Her music is so full of energy! It seems that I always have her music on my player--and without fail--someone always asks "This is great! Who is that?" As always, they are on Amazon the next day to order the CD.

You don't have to understand Spanish to appreciate Rosario. Here music is pure life and energy. Buy this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Just excellent!.......2005-10-13

This CD is wonderful, every song is full of happiness and spanish taste. Rosario shares her best expression through all the songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Poetic Music.......2005-07-07

I spend three months looking for this CD and couldn't find it anywhere. I heard one of the songs "Agual y Sal" or Salt and water as it would be called in english in one of the spanish soap-operas I used to see. I absolutely love this song but once I heard the samples of all the other tracks I fell in love with many of them...such as: Rosa y Miel, Al Son del Tambor, Tuyo Siempre, muchas flores, and lets not forget La Casa en el Aire. I'd never heard of Rosario Flores in my life...until then! So, like I was saying...the song of "Agua y Sal" is so special to me. I relate to it completely, and more than poetic is my life right there and then. I recomended this CD to anyone that's a hopeless romantic!

5 out of 5 stars Sharp, funny, sweet.......2004-04-23

A great little record, with more of a western swing and tex-mex sound than her later rockabilly albums. There are sweet songs ("My Blue Angel") and bad-girl songs ("Ruin This Romance)," and if you're a Merle Haggard fan you must hear "Girl Haggard" before you die. The songwriting is sharp and Rosie's voice is equal to it all.
