Product Description
In Los Mocosos' musical world, rock, Latin, funk and Jamaican ska, blend together in a melting pot of sweaty horns, stinging guitars, and rock solid funky rhythms. After being handpicked by Carlos Santana to open a series of Santana arena dates last year, Los Mocosos went straight into the studio to create their latest release, American Us. The new CD takes this San Francisco based group on a quantum leap into new sonic territory. Produced by Greg Landau (Quetzal, Patato, Bobi Cespedes, Susana Baca) and mixed by Garry Hughes and Donal Hodgson (Sting, Vitamin C, Tina Turner) American Us is the most mature and accessible offering yet from this multi-cultural band. More prolific than D'Angelo and Terence Trent D'Arby combined, one-man rock & soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the '90s. From the Motown-perfect "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" to the Beatlesesque "Let Love Rule," Kravitz has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. The 15 tracks found here provide a surprisingly coherent reminder of just how much the artist has accomplished in a relatively short time. And even if his biggest hit, "Are You Gonna Go My Way," falls short of its Hendrix target, Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" still rocks in a pleasingly Neanderthal way. An infectious new cut, "Again," fits neatly alongside sturdy Kravitz originals such as "Fly Away," "Mr. Cab Driver," and "Black Velveteen," showcasing a talent whose postmodern pop should play well into the new century. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT LENNY KRAVITZ COMPILATION! .......2007-01-02

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece compilation album entitled "LENNY KRAVITZ GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's newest premiere performers, LENNY KRAVITZ! This complilation album was originally released in 2000 on Compact Disc on the Virgin Records America label. The matrix or ID number is 7243 8 50316 2 5. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

What can I say about LENNY KRAVITZ that hasn't already been said? Lenny Kravitz is one the latest and most recently new rising black guitar players to emerge in the Rock n' Roll scene! They're has been great black guitarists that have passed through Rock n' Roll history! I'm talking about guitarists such as THE GREAT CHUCK BERRY, THE LATE GREAT JIMI HENDRIX, VERNON REID FROM LIVING COLOUR and THE LEGENDARY PRINCE! When LENNY KRAVITZ came on the music scene in the early 90's, he had no intentions of ever looking back! Lenny's blistering guitar playing would have definitely made his ancestor's extremely proud! Did you also know that Lenny's mother was a famous actress named Roxie Roker? You might remember her as the neighbor of Cleaners owner George Jefferson of the popular 70's TV series "THE JEFFERSON'S!" Did you also know that Lenny is half black and half white! Lenny would even do one better by marrying and divorcing America's Sweetheart from The Cosby Show, Lisa Bonet! In my opinion, it wouldn't be until the 1991 album "MAMA SAID" that Lenny would gain fame and attention! However, Lenny would really gain worldwide fame with the release of "ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY" in 1993! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!" In my opinion, "LENNY KRAVITZ GREATEST HITS" is an outstanding compilation album that is also a true testament of a great guitarist that is also a sheer genius in striving for perfection for his greatest love and passion, HIS MUSIC! This compilation album is quite simply, LENNY KRAVITZ'S STORY! Every single song track in this compilation album is GREAT!

I will list and briefly review all the song tracks contained in this compilation album in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Are You Gonna Go My Way," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I love KRAVITZ'S blistering guitar riff arrangements in this one! This ROCKER is one of KRAVITZ'S BEST EVER! I love this Rocker!) (2.) "Fly Away," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I also love KRAVITZ'S blistering guitar riff arrangements in this one as well! I love it!) (3.) "Rock And Roll Is Dead," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! This Rocker, like many of his Rocker's, has some great guitar riff arrangements that result a kick a*s Rocker! I love it as well!) (4.) "Again," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT SLOW KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! I love this slow Rocker!) (5.) "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS SONG! This is a GREAT slow KRAVITZ number! This song sounds a little R & B and Disco! KRAVITZ really displays his talents as a Lead Singer by demonstrating his falsetto voice range!) (6.) "Can't Get You Off My Mind," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT slow KRAVITZ ROCKER! This slow Rocker really kicks! I love it!) (7.) "Mr. Cab Driver," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! I love the way Lenny uses the "F" word in this one! I love this Rocker!) (8.) "American Woman," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE GUESS WHO! This is a GREAT ROCKIN' version done the LENNY KRAVITZ way, ROCK'S AND KICKS A*S! I love it!) (9.) "Stand By My Woman," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL SLOW MELLOW SONG! KRAVITZ really sings this song with such raw power and emotion like he REALLY means it! This song sounds like something that John Lennon would sing if he were alive today! I love this song so dearly!) (10.) "Always On The Run," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! Preach it Lenny! Ain't it the truth! I love the musical arrangements in this one as well! I love it!) (11.) "Heaven Help," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT slow KRAVITZ number! I love the musical arrangements in this one! I love this one!) (12.) "I Belong To You," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is a great number with a great beat to it! This song has a pinch of some R & B and Soul added to it! I love this song!) (13.) "Believe," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! The Vocal effects in this song sounds like The Beatles and/or the George Harrison composition song "BLUE JAY WAY! You can actually feel The Beatles influence in KRAVITZ'S music! I love it!) (14.) "Let Love Rule" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT slow KRAVITZ ROCKER! KRAVITZ'S blistering Lead Vocals REALLY GET DOWN in this one! This song sounds like a Beatles song, am I wrong? WOW! I love this one!) and (15.) "Black Velveteen." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I love this one as well!) There are four GREAT A*S KICKING songs that deserve honorable mention with this compilation album! They are "Lady," "California," "Where Are We Runnin'" and "Flash" from Lenny's 2004 album release "BAPTISM." Overall, this is one GREAT A*S KICKING compilation album! Every single song track contained in this compilation album is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, this is definitely one great treasure compilation album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will prove to persevere the test of time and will only get better like wine! This compilation album without a doubt will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, the LENNY KRAVITZ LEGEND has continued to grow to this point and will only get better! I really truly believe with all my heart that KRAVITZ'S best is yet to come! I, as one am definitely looking forward to it! Here's to you Lenny and your band too! Keep up the GREAT ROCKIN' Lenny! Keep The Faith! Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LENNY KRAVITZ RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as a Greatest Hits Collection Gets.......2005-12-12

In the mid 1990s, I heard a concert promotion radio ad that was basically introducing the performer to be "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Star". When they announced that star to be Lenny Kravitz, I must admit, I nearly drove off the road when I heard that. I had realized Kravitz had some commercial success and had a nice following, but "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Star"? - Come On! However, now about a decade later, as I have begun to get a deeper appreciation for what Rock music has to offer, I now realize that perhaps there is some real merit to that radio ad. I'm still not ready to put Kravitz up there with the upper echelon of Rock with the Paul McCartneys, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteens, or even Billy Joels - however, it is safe to say that Kravitz could easily be one of the great revelations of the 1990s and has lived completely up to expectations as he has entered the 2000s. In 2000, Kravitz amassed enough material and success to release his first Greatest Hits album. This collection, "Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" provides some a great cross-section into Kravitz's musical career and is a great place to start if you are interested in checking out Kravtiz's material.

"Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" hits focuses on the first decade of Kravitz's career (1989-2000). During this time, Kravtiz would release five solo albums for an average of 1 album every 2 years. These albums (and the associated tracks included from these albums) are: 1989's "Let Love Rule" ("Mr Cab Driver", "Let Love Rule"); 1991's "Mama Said" ("It Ain't Over Til It's Over", "Stand By My Woman", "Always On the Run"); 1993's "Are You Gonna Go My Way" ("Are You Gonna Go My Way", "Heaven Help", "Believe"); 1995's "Circus" ("Rock and Roll is Dead", "Can't Get You Off My Mind"); "5" ("Fly Away", "I Belong to You", "Black Velveteen"). As with the case of most greatest hits albums, there is one new song to stimulate album sales among the deep fan base - a very solid song called, "Again". It is worth noting that Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" is also included on this collection. This song was part of the soundtrack of "Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me", but was eventually included on the re-issue of "5". One thing that is very nice about this collection is that it is split among the 5 albums just about evenly. I'm pleased that there are even two songs from his first album which was really not commercially successful.

I think that Kravitz hits the three main dimensions that I expect from a successful solo artist: Vocals, Instrumentation, and Songwriting. On top of these three dimensions, Kravitz cross all of these dimensions by providing a variety of different music styles. Whether it is hard Rock, R&B, or Funk - Kravitz finds ways to incorporate these styles and more into his music. Kravitz was influenced by Prince who also incorporated similar styles into his music. "Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" will show examples of this wide range of diversity. You can hear Kravitz's Hard Rock style on "Are You Gonna Go My Way", "American Woman", "Fly Away", "Rock and Roll is Dead" and "Always on the Run". Songs such as "Mr Cab Driver" have a definite Funk influence in it - especially on the Bass. Still songs such as "Heaven Help" , "It Ain't Over Til its Over", and "I Belong to You" show Kravitz' R&B side. Despite these obvious influences, it is not easy to pigeon-hole Kravtiz's music into one musical genre. There are many of his songs that definitely cross several of these genres and also break new ground. Perhaps the best example of this is "Black Velveteen". "Black Velveteen" has been a song that Kravitz has been criticized for, but I happen to think it's the best song he has done. The song does have a "Euro Pop" feel, but it you will hear parts of Hard Rock and even R&B overlaid on top of this. I like how Kravitz tries to do something "out of the box" and "different" to his music. Kravitz's ability to innovate didn't happen late in his career - listen to his early song "Let Love Rule". Kravitz uses combines some R&B with some Jimi Hendrix-like sounds to give a unique sound.

As mentioned I think it comes down to the three dimensions I list above. Kravitz shows incredible range on his vocals - whether it's "It Ain't Over Til It's Over", "Let Love Rule" or his new track "Again", Kravitz will show he is not one dimensional as a vocalist. From an instrumentation standpoint, Kravitz is well-known for his incredible guitar, but also listen to his Bass work as well. You'll hear Kravitz incorporate other instruments as well - such as piano on "Heaven Help" or horns on "Let Love Rule" and "Always on the Run". Lost in this whole picture is some of Kravitz's songwriting - this is perhaps one of the most overlooked dimensions of his talent. Once again, this can even be traced early to his career - on 1989's "Mr Cab Driver", he describes the experiences of racism and discrimination.

There is one negative on this collection. I normally like when an artist puts tracks in chronological order because this allows me to hear how the artist progressed over time. Unfortunately, this collection does not do so. It would have been a great strength if this had been done on this collection.

The liner notes include the lyrics to the new song - "Again". The songwriting credits as well as what album the song is included on are also included in the liner notes. Overall, this is as solid a Greatest Hits album as it gets. The only other negative may be as Kravitz continues to have success, this album might someday be eclipsed by a more current Greatest Hits portfolio.

4 out of 5 stars Good Place to Start People!!!!!.......2005-11-16

I had this album for quite some time and thought to myself that I should finally place my input on this. I had met Lenny Kravitz in the Bahamas ten years ago during the Christmas holiday and it was great to shake his hands. We are lucky to be alive to hear the work of this man. He's one of these artists' that are out there who puts so much of what is lacking in performance of contemporary sound and that is FEELING. It blows my mind the criticism he's received accusing him of robbing the stylistic graves of his idols - excuse me? So do hundreds of other artists who can't even hold a candle in tribute no matter how hard their effort or sincerity. THIS is a man who takes whatever influences and MAKES THEM HIS OWN. I have no problem whatsoever picking out a riff or musical inflection out of any of his works in recognition of his predecessors. He writes, produces, and most impressive plays almost all instruments on his recordings. Like back in the 70's, where there were numerous groups with plenty of organic vibes.
If you don't have this CD or any of his CDs, I recommend picking this one up. It also includes a never before released song called Again that I am sure you heard back in the day and loved. Lenny's greatest hits is a great introduction to his music, it has all his best songs, all his great rock songs like 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' 'Fly Away' and 'American Woman' it also has the best of his soul work like 'I Belong To You' and 'Heaven Help' but you also get a few funky numbers like 'Always On The Run' and 'Black Velvetine' this a great way for anyone to get into him, you'll see once you hear this album your gonna want more.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Compilation.......2005-08-19

If you don't have any Kravitz record, just purchase this item and you know who is he.

Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. A better choice is Earthbeat's Tribal Waters. --Paige La Grone

This Cd actually makes my mind wander back in time and wonder what it was like living as and indian. The CD is a must for any music lover!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-08

I had heard mixed reviews of this CD, but I found it to be amazing.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting. Worth buying........2007-04-12

There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

5 out of 5 stars Short, to the point, just how I like it.......2007-07-26

The Misfits Walk Among Us is essential punk rock. IT's short, only 25 minutes mind you, but like Reign In Blood, I think it's a record that you could repeat at least once.

The Misfits are fun to listen to, and that's the way it should be. Sometimes, you just don't want to think, otherwise, it's just great to have fun. All music is fun to an extent, but sometimes, you just want to have fun. Not always do you have to listen to music that makes you think (although it's a welcome change, I need thought provoking music). IT's called variety.

Enough of that, this is just rock at what's it's best, sort of like what Janitor-X says (and I could a ______ less if he dosen't like me agreeing with him on things). The lyrics are a blast, it's great to listen to the voilence and gore lyrics which are never over the top, and it's clearly a great big joke, like a horror movie. It's not for the easily scared ________, but most people hopefully are'tl ike that. Death metal morons like Glen Benton could learn a thing or to from Glen Danzig.

I don't think it's the greatest album ever, but hey, I think that it's a great album none the less. I think that you should get it.

10/10

5 out of 5 stars 20 eyes in my head and they're all the SAME!!!!.......2007-05-18

This is a great album. I can't say that this is my favorite Misfits album, because I love them all. This album rocks and it has that great tight crunch sound that made the Misfits so good. Glenn is always seen as the head Fit, but to me, Jerry and Doyle's playing are just as important.

My favorite tracks on this album are 20 Eyes, Vampira, Astro Zombies, and of course one of their greatest songs 'Skulls'. On this album also is a live recording of 'Mommy can I go out and kill tonight?'. This song is killer.

I don't have any complaints about this album. It is a little short time wise, but that's punk rock. I always loved The Misfits sing a long choruses and this album is chock full of them. Who doesn't like to sing along to Devil's Whorehouse as they are driving their car?

One interesting note. When the Misfits released the American Psycho album in 1997 with Michael Graves, there was a song on there called 'Walk Among Us'. It is a great tune. I like the Michael Graves era of the Misfits too. I wonder if the song was a left over from these sessions, or if Jerry and Doyle came up with it years later.

To all the fiends out there, keep rockin!

5 out of 5 stars Golden-Age of The Misfits.......2007-05-17

By far their best work to date. If you need one Misfits album in your collection (and who doesn't), it must be this one. If you need one Misfits song in your collection, it MUST be the incomparable Astro Zombies, by far their best song, not only on their best album, but on any of their albums. After your 5,000th time of hearing Astro Zombies, it's just as great as the first. You got one right that time, Glenn.

5 out of 5 stars Best Misfits ever.......2007-01-05

AAA.. those were the good old days. Glenn Danzig was still on vocals. "Walk Among us" is dark, evil, and just like any other Misfits album. "Hatebreeders", "Mommy... (Live)" "Night of the living dead", "Skulls", and "Braineaters" are all awesome songs. Who doesn't like the hardcore and punk blend of the Misfits?

5 out of 5 stars Punk Rock's Id.......2006-10-15

Grading Criteria:
1 star- Blows
2 stars- Fair, bordering on bad.
3 stars- Decent.
4 stars- Very good.
5 stars- Classic.

The Misfits were one of the greatest punk bands ever. Its incredible how much metal and punk music were influenced by them. Even though their records often had a dark, sinister theme (themes included in this album include decapitation, zombies, Nazis, and demons) the music was backed up with great harmony from one of the greatest vocalists ever, Glenn Danzig, and the upbeat instrumentals from the Only brothers and whoever drummed on this CD. They are probably the most accessible band for people who normally find Hardcore unattractive, which is probably why they have such cross over appeal. Take a listen to "Night of the Living Dead", or "Astro Zombies", and see if you dont find yourself humming along. After the Misfits, Glenn Danzig ventured into the more extreme, darker goth-punk band Samhain, and after that into the straight metal outfit Danzig, but when he was with the Misfits he made some damn good Melodic Hardcore. Highly recommended.

A hint: there are no Wham songs on George Michael's 10-tune tribute to the music of the 20th century. There is a song by the Police ("Roxanne"), but the reggae ballad is rendered in such a turgid manner, it resembles nothing so much as a lounge singer stoned on Quaaludes. Elsewhere, the silver-tongued former club kid covers Rodgers & Hart ("Where or When"), U2 ("Miss Sarajevo"), and Ewan MacColl ("The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"). He pours so much calculated sentiment on top of each track that the entire record oozes a prefab corniness even Hallmark would recoil at. This is not to deny the power of George Michael's velvety, potent voice (although it does sound much better singing catchy dance-pop ditties) nor the fact that he's selected an interesting selection of ballads and folk and torch tunes. And Phil Ramone's production never veers from the middle of the road, unobtrusively shifting from smooth big-band jazz to Disney movie-ish harp accompaniment. If this CD is Michael's attempt to join the company of great song interpreters of the past, from Frank Sinatra to Billie Holiday, he will have to take a lot more chances and lose the sappy reserve. --Mike McGonigal

2 out of 5 stars It is Very Different Then Anything Else from G.M. .......2007-04-12

I like listening to George Michael as I personally feel he has a great voice but this album is not really for me. I like almost all of his music but I could have skipped this one and it would not have been a loss.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to accept that this masterpiece has never been recognized........2007-02-28

Can one album change the entire genre of music you're listening? This album did for me! I used to be an average pop-rock listener, until I came across with it. Since then gradually I've become a jazz fan.

The songs are excellently performed by GM while I wouldn't ignore the great influence and contribution of the producer Phil Ramone.

The album is one of the rare albums in my whole life that I like from Track 1 till the end and have kept in my cd-changer for several years, and each year I found another track to really enjoy listening to.

I believe GM's voice suits more in jazz music than any other genre, and hope he releases a second volume of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, how did I miss this one gem all these years?.......2006-02-09

I always know George Michael has a nice voice unlike lots of crappy pop singers. But this just totally blew me away. I'm a big fan of his Faith album, but I'd never imagined him singing these songs so beautifully. What a rare talent. Wish he had recorded more albums like this.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Trip to Yesterday.......2006-02-01

Yes this CD is NOT for everyone. But that being said I thought it was masterfully done. From Doris Day's "Secret Love" to "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" the tracks are fulled with emotion and power of an artist not afraid to move out of his expected nitch and risk everything to explore another side of himself. So if you're up to a little old fashioned style I think you'd be pleasently suprized. - Jim Chappelle, L.A. CA.

5 out of 5 stars George Michael: Songs From The Last Century (1999).......2005-11-20

In 1999, George Michael released his fifth album entitled, SONGS FROM THE LAST CENTURY. This album is not as good as I had hoped it would be, but the brilliance of it is what persuaded me to give the album five stars.

BROTHER CAN YOU SPARE A DIME
Originally recorded by Tom Waites. I've never heard the original, but George did not do a bad job with recording this one. It's a song I can easily enjoy.

ROXANNE
Originally recorded by The Police. Between The Police's rendition and George's rendition, I prefer both. Both versions are incredible.

YOU'VE CHANGED
Originally recorded by Joni Mitchell. Both Joni's original and George's rendition are definitely worth listening to. Believe me.

MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME
Originally recorded by Frank Sinatra. I am not a fan of Frank Sinatra's, although, his voice is very soothing. I did not really go for George's version either.

THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE
Originally recorded by Roberta Flack. Roberta Flack's version will always be the definitive version. George Michael's rendition is just as good as Roberta Flack's version.

MISS SARAJEVO
Originally recorded by U2. Never liked either version.

I REMEMBER YOU
I am not sure who originall recorded this song, but it has been covered by many artists over the years, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, The Ramones, Roxette, The Pretenders, etc. Not a bad rendition.

SECRET LOVE
Originally recorded by Frank Sinatra. Not bad.

WILD IS THE WIND
Originally recorded by Johnny Mathis. Never liked either version.

WHEN OR WHERE
Originally recorded by Rodgers & Hart. Not bad.

This is an album that'll remind you of the past and it is worth the money. At least in my opinion. But, anyway, buy yourself a copy if you don't have it already.

Many alternative-rock fans considered Camper Van Beethoven an important band, but I wasn't among them. Guitarist/vocalist David Lowerey always seemed smarmy and ridiculously happy with his own cleverness. Lowrey's new band, Cracker, has the potential to be even more annoying, since the quartet places the spotlight solely on its leader and songwriter, but its self-titled 1992 debut was a strong effort with a smart, infectious single ("Teen Angst"), and Kerosene Hat is even better. Recorded with stripped- down simplicity on an abandoned soundstage at the edge of the Mojave desert, the album concentrates on the band's undeniably catchy country-flavored garage punk. "Go For A Ride" is perfect highway music, and the single "Low" is almost as good as "Teen Angst." Unfortunately, the most inspired title and song topic-"Hi Desert Biker Meth Lab"-turns out to be wasted on a short snippet of noise and studio chatter. --Jim DeRogatis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great albums of the 90's.......2007-04-20

When I first heard Kerosene Hat, it was on one side of a 90 min cassette recording a buddy made for me; the other side was of Cracker's Golden Age (another gem). This cassette didn't leave my deck until a few years later when I finally purchased the CD. Their cover of Jerry Garcia's Loser is brilliant - especially Johnny Hickman's great guitar. Speaking of Hickman (of whom I'm a huge fan), I could do without his one contribution to the album, "Lonesome Johnny Blues"; otherwise, a perfect album.

4 out of 5 stars This grew on me.......2007-02-19

When I bought this back in the day it was on the strength of the lead single "Low." I listened to it once or twice, and then it sat on the shelf a while.

Then I remember a friend of mine who mentioned that he really liked these guys cos of their strong songwriting, etc. I sort of looked at him and was like sure Jon, whatever you say.

Then about 7 years back, I ripped my entire CD collection to MP3 and listened to it again. I don't know if it's because I'm in a different place in my life now, but I really like it. I still listen to this record occasionally, it's held up remarkably well over time.

5 out of 5 stars Great record!.......2006-12-14

This record, Cracker's second is a very good one. The songs are catchy, the lyrics are funny and the production is almost perfect. I'm a Camper Van Beethoven fan who liked the first Cracker cd a lot but Kerosene Hat is a gem.
If you like you're music real, try this record.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2006-12-01

There is only one song on the entire cd that is worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, start to finish.......2006-05-16

I bought this album as part of a reduced price deal cause I liked one of the hidden tracks "Eurotrash Girl" Well after a couple of listens I had to admit this was an undeniably great album. In fact, I have bought everything Cracker has ever put out since, they really are a great band that just knows how to write great songs. You will not be disappointed with this one.

5 out of 5 stars A source of peace for peace-lovers.......2007-08-03

This CD is one of my favorites to listen to when I feel the need to be closer to the Spirit. Mack Wilberg is a master at transforming old hymns into glorious arrangements. I have had experience with high school students who love singing his arrangements even within the context of a world that seems in a state of constant conflict. THIS CD IS FABULOUS!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-14

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

3 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars every good adjective .......2005-08-06

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

On Baptism, his seventh album, Lenny Kravitz writes, arranges, performs, and produces every track. The trouble with working alone is that there's little quality control; some of the songs here really could have benefited from a bit of that. Not to say that Baptism is a complete dud of an album, indeed, the worst thing about it is its awful cover. "California" has a catchy, power-pop bounce that's actually reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, with its fuzzy guitars and handclaps, as well as its un-Kravitz-like short running time (just over two-and-a-half minutes). But then "Sistamamalover" veers deep into Prince territory, with a groove that's too contrived, too dull, and too long. And there's some of the self-indulgence of a satisfied, middle-aged rocker apparent on "Minister of Rock & Roll" and "I Don't Want to Be a Star" (it's easy to sing about wanting only "a Chevy and an old guitar" when you're living in a massive mansion). The best tracks are the most straightforward, fun ones: the aforementioned "California," the ZZ Top-inspired "Where Are We Runnin'?" and the Stones-sounding "Flash." Kravitz should loosen up more and leave the angst to the teenagers. --Robert Burrow

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-01-12

I had all but given up on Lenny Kravitz after Circus. I just happened to listen to this album on Rhapsody and fell in love with it. It is the Best Lenny Kravitz album since Mama Said. Thanks Lenny, for actually playing some nice rock music!

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2006-08-25

I picked this album up used at a record store for $6, and I think it's well worth it. I'd only heard "Lady" (pretty good) and "Where are we Runnin'?" (great), so I thought I'd get it. I like the album for about half the songs. I appreciate that Lenny does slow songs, but 6 out of 13 songs? I don't even find them very good slow songs. If they were good slow songs, I'd give this CD 5 stars, but no. The fast songs are really good, so why aren't the rest like that?

1. Minister of Rock 'N' Roll: 9.5/10 Perfect way to start the album.
2. I Don't Want To Be a Star: 7/10 I don't like his whiny voice in the intro and chorus, but the verses are good.
3. Lady: 8/10 Too long, and repetitive, but the solo is cool.
4. Calling All Angels: 5/10 Ugh. Slow, boring, lame lyrics, too long, etc. Skip this track.
5. California: 9/10 Fun song, good tune to dance to.
6. Sistamamalover: 9/10: Nice funky feel to the song, but odd lyrics.
7. Where Are We Runnin'?: 10/10 Awesome. Heavy bass, heavy guitar, good verses.
8. Baptized: 7/10 Bad verses, good chorus.
9. Flash: 9.5/10 I love this song. Again, odd lyrics, but good.
10. What Did I Do With My Life?: 7/10 Lenny sounds like Elvis Costello in this song. But it doesn't help.
11. Storm: 9/10 Another funky song, but this has Jay-Z, so it's even better.
12. The Other Side: 6.5/10 Wow. This sounds just like all the other piano ballads on this album.
13. Destiny: 6.5/10 Sub-par defines this song. Lenny with an acoustic guitar and a falsetto. Almost worse than it sounds.

Overall: 103/130=79%, hence the 4 stars. If you like Kravitz, pick this up used.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2006-05-23

First of all, Im a huge Kravitz fan, I have all his albums ooops, did I say that, I meant cds. I love his throwback, late 60's-7o's funky/rock/soul style. But I am sad to say that Baptism did not impress me that much, like his earlier stuff did. Sure, there are a couple of songs I dig on Baptism, but as a whole, I have to say I dont like it all. I like Sistamammalover, and R and R Minister. That Angel song bored me to death. I had to skip it and go to the next song, because the first time I was listening to it, I was driving, and almost fell asleep. Baptism is not his best. Come on Lenny, get back to that funky/soulful stuff you do so well...

5 out of 5 stars Very happy.......2005-12-23

Very happy with cd and service

5 out of 5 stars "You just don't know how to groove, white boy.".......2005-10-09

"Sistamamalover" is one of the finest soul tunes since the theme to Good Times! "California" sounds like the boy is fondly reminiscing to his pre-teen days, and it makes you want to move there now. "Minister of Rock & Roll" is full more music than anyone can catch on their first 5 listenings. Overall, even the weakest tunes on this disc are 4 star -- buy it, and worship with Lenny!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound!.......2007-05-19

The sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a march CD -- bright and crisp -- no muffled cymbals here, but also no overly-brassy brass. I'm not too keen on some of the selections (The Virginians, Barnum and Bailey's), but others (like Americans We) are truly beautiful. Create your own playlist and go out for a walk to this music -- just great!

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise from the Army Band........2005-08-15

The Forward March CD is a great collection of marches. I have listened to the CD three times in the last few weeks and my students have replayed the CD over and over at the band room. A worthwhile addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Altissimo! Finally Has a Winner!.......2005-08-02

Finally a CD from Altissimo! of decent length with a solid march program. Instead of the usual patriotic dribble that we normally get on this label at last we have some real marches! Many of the selections are well known, but there are a few gems here. The performances are first-rate as to be expected by this premier band. For a change it looks like Altissimo! put together a winner from the extensive library of the bands' recorded music. Most likely none of the pieces played here are current recordings, but are taken from the bands own library which is what Altissimo! does with all of their products. In other words this is not an original recording. Still, the material is good and worthwhile. The program notes are better than usual as well. Altissimo! is slowly getting more professional in their products. Its been a gradual process indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Foward March! America's Great Marches.......2005-05-08

FORWARD MARCH!IS A NATIONAL TREASURE!

THE 17 GREATEST AMERICAN MARCHES? THEY ARE RECREATED ON THIS NEW CD BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND, "PERSHING'S OWN".

FOR 130 YEARS THESE 17 NATIONAL MARCHES HAVE "INSPIRED US, MARCHED TROOPS INTO FORMATION, CELEBRATED OUR NATIONAL PRIDE", AND ENTERTAINED US IN CONCERT. NOW FORWARD MARCH! SHOWCASES AMERICA'S GREATEST PATRIOTIC MARCHES-EACH MARCH WRITTEN WITH PRIDE BY AN AMERICAN AND PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY IN EVERY SENSE BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND UNDER LEADER AND COMMANDER COLONEL GARY F. LAMB.

COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE MARCHES THAT I THINK WOULD MAKE ANYONE'S "A LIST", SUCH AS OUR NATIONAL MARCH, SOUSA'S "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" AND THE ESSENTIAL "WASHINGTON POST". BUT SINCE A CONSTANT 120 BEATS PER MINUTE "MARCH TEMPO" CAN BECOME MONOTONOUS(IF YOU'RE NOT MARCHING!), COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE COMPLEX (AND DIFFICULT!) "COMMANDO MARCH" BY SAMUEL BARBER(WHOSE MUSIC WAS USED IN THE MOVIE PLATOON) AND THE VERY SLIGHTLY SLOWER PACED "WASHINGTON GRAYS" , THE OLDEST MARCH IN THIS COLLECTION(1861) TO CHANGE THE PACE-LITERALLY. "WASHINGTON GRAYS", LIKE "COMMANDO MARCH" IS A CONCERT MARCH. IT HAS MANY CONTRASTS IN MOOD AND DYNAMICS, WHICH COL LAMB AND THE BAND DEMONSTRATE SUBERBLY, USING ANY OPPORTUNITY THE MUSIC PRESENTS FOR CREATING CONTRAST AND INTEREST --VERY IMPORTANT WHEN THE CD CONTAINS ONLY ONE GENRE! EACH MARCH IS TREATED WITH THE SAME CARE AND IN SOME PASSAGES ALMOST REVERENCE. VIRTUOSITY IS EFFORTLESS---THE HARD SOUNDS EASY! EXAMPLES ARE THE FAMOUS PICCOLOS IN "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" , AND THE BARITONE/FRENCH HORNS(HEROIC INSTRUMENTS!) AS THEY ENJOY THE HIGH TESTOSTERONE OPENING FANFARE OF "THE VIRGINIANS" (THE LATTER MARCH IS THE YOUNGEST IN THE GROUP(1992), BUT IT CLEARLY DESERVES MEMBERSHIP.)

"THE CHIMES OF LIBERTY", "NATIONAL EMBLEM", AND "AMERICANS WE", WERE CLEARLY COMPOSED WITH NATIONAL PRIDE ---AND ON THIS CD THE PREMIER MUSICAL ORGANIZATION OF THE U.S. ARMY PERFORMS THEM WITH PARTICULAR PRIDE .

THESE "GREAT 17" MARCHES, OUR NATIONAL MUSICAL TREASURES, ARE HONORED ONCE MORE, AND INSPIRE US ONCE MORE THANKS TO THE SKILL AND DEVOTION OF THE U.S. ARMY BAND AND IT'S LEADER COLONEL LAMB. WELL DONE SOLDIERS!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FORWARD MARCH!

5 out of 5 stars Forward March! .......2005-05-04

FORWARD MARCH! is an enjoyable and stimulating album which provides an unusual mix of traditional marches and not often heard compositions.

The United States Army Band is magnificent in its superb technical presentation of the broad spectrum of music contained on the CD and that unquestionably makes it worth acquiring.

Altissimo! Recordings once again educates listeners, as it did in HAIL TO THE CHIEF, by exposing them to pieces which have historical as well as musical significance. It carefully points out those works which are parade marches versus concert marches --- describing the Washington Grays as the "forerunner" of the latter.

The documentation which accompanies the CD provides a brief but tantalizing sense of who or what prompted the composition. Consequently, a far better appreciation for each selection is the result. The overall effect is a noteworthy collection of thoroughly enjoyable music for all to hear!

FORWARD MARCH! is a must for those who enjoy the uplifting of spirit which the march as a style of music provides!

Distilling Iggy Pop's work down to 17 songs is nearly impossible. Anyone with an interest in Mr. Pop should first pick up the Stooges albums before exploring his later solo years. This collection, however, includes enough highlights to satisfy a casual fan. The Stooges are lightly covered with the essential punk anthem "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and the manic "Search and Destroy." The inclusion of the slinking "Sick of You" is a nice touch. Pop's pop leanings pop up with "Nightclubbing," "China Girl," and "Lust for Life," tracks in which the guitars are toned down a notch and Iggy exhibits a slightly more mellow side. Of course, he ultimately returns with a vengeance befitting one of rock's original wild men. --Rob O'Connor

All the Iggy songs that get stuck in your head in one place. The possibility of scaring your coworkers with your music is a definite bonus.

5 out of 5 stars An essential purchase...........2006-06-06

..if you are a complete DORK! Iggy Pop changed his name from James Osterberg when he found out he was too dumb to spell it correctly. He was also a member of The Stooges but that group was never the same after Curley died.

Be that as it may, they included a few Stooges tracks here... but the first half of the cd is pretty much disposable.

It gets better after, and including, 'Real Wild Child'. That's when Iggy tried to be Bowie, who is another useless blight on the landscape of rock'n'roll. Bowie, like others of limited talent, kept reinventing his "image" because that's ALL he could sell to a gullible public. He had NO talent for music whatsoever. Iggy is pretty much the same. He resorts to exposing his genitals on stage, and he only has credibilty with overly simplistic village idiots. Mr. Pop even made an album called, quite appropriately, "The Idiot".

There are about half a dozen half-decent tracks on this compilation but all-in-all, it's one big yawn. Buy it if you are not too bright. I mean, they say "A fool and his money are soon parted."...why should YOU break that cycle??

2 out of 5 stars Overrated........2005-03-17

I never really saw what was so great about Iggy Pop.

He was hyper and screamed. so what? So does my two year old son.

3 out of 5 stars embarrassing evidence of how aging causes one to suck.......2005-01-09

When I got this album, I truly thought that Iggy Pop was the perfect candidate for a greatest hits compilation. He's got a dozen decent hits scattered across a dozen mediocre albums, and it would seem logical that gathering those songs together would produce one nearly perfect album.

How wrong I was. Instead, by sequencing these 17 songs in chronological order, "Nude & Rude" just provides a handy step-by-step guide for charting Iggy Pop's mortifying decline from Detroit wildman to crapola alt-rock crooner. Some of these songs are outright embarrassing. "Kill City" borders on arena rock parody, and "Home"--the second single of Iggy's comeback "Brick by Brick"--is excrutiating. Listening to Iggy croon "home boy, home boy" is agony. The folky duet "Candy" is still a guilty pleasure, but "Real Wild Child"--arguably the biggest hit of Iggy's career--has fittingly become the theme song of Carnival Cruise Lines, where middle-aged porkers saddle up at all-you-can-eat buffet, before enjoying Kathie Lee Gifford on the ledo deck.

Some of the best songs here are still the one's David Bowie wrote. "Lust for Life", "Nightclubbing", and "China Girl" all hold up nicely as perfect pop songs. Ironically, however, it's Bowie's mediocre mix of "Search & Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" present here, instead of the far superior remix that Iggy issued later.

2 out of 5 stars For the most part , this is TRASH.......2004-11-11

I spun this disk only a few times before I decided to sell it back. This is mostly just trashy, unexciting rock n'roll without much in the way of decent songwriting. I might've held onto it to hear "Lust for Life," but that song has lost most of its swaggering power since it's become commercialized.

I also might've held on to this disk if it had my favorite Iggy track "Repo Man" which should've been in this collection. Alas, it's not and I just can't be bothered with the rest. I guess I'll just go get the "Repo Man" soundtrack which is far more enjoyable than this dreck. =)

The Cramps got away with their Z-movie, zombie-rock schtick because they were so intense in their conviction that it had more value than middlebrow humanist pop. Descending on Memphis to cut their debut album with Big Star legend Alex Chilton, the band served up a thirteen-song punkabilly testament to drive-in anti-culture, replete with garage-band guitars and booming voodoo drums. Versions of "Fever" "Strychnine," and the Johnny Burnette Trio's "Tear It Up" competed with Lux Interior-Poison Ivy originals like "T.V. Set" and "I Was a Teenage Werewolf." Songs the Lord Taught Us was also the first and last Cramps album to feature scary-looking guitarist Bryan Gregory. --Barney Hoskyns

5 out of 5 stars Get Down & Do the ZOMBIE DANCE!.......2007-05-13

The Cramps began as a Rock band who was influenced by the Blues and in turn possibly created the genre that is psychobilly.
Early on they entered into CBGB's and the early Punk scene along with Television and The Ramones.
In 1979 The Cramps released "Songs the Lord Taught Us" produced by Alex Chilton(Big Star).
"Songs The Lord Taught Us" is The Cramps at their Best -starting things off right. And this is definately dangerously Raw and exciting.
I don't own all of The Cramps' albums, but of the six that I do own - this is the one that I keep coming back to, it's more fun w/ energetic & psychotic Madman anger! ...Kind of like Elvis a bit more Revved up!
There are many of my Favorite Cramp songs on here: "Garbageman" - "The Mad Daddy" - "ZOMBIE DANCE" - "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" - "Fever" and so on...Takes Punk music to a whole new level!
I do wish I bought this one back when I was in High School, instead of starting off with "Flamejob" - which I never really appreciated until I heard "Songs the Lord Taught Us" - another one of my Favorite full-length debuts and The Cramps are a Band who inspired many others.
- Yes, if you at all are into Psychobilly music, or if you are interested - Do yourself a favor and pick up "Songs the Lord Taught Us" - Another Favorite of mine is The Gun Club: Fire of Love; and Kid Congo Powers(guitar) was a part of Both bands.

5 out of 5 stars Orphic Mystery.......2007-01-21

Still my favorite Cramps album, for it contains my favorite Cramps cover of The Sonics' "Strychnine." This is rock-a-billy, punk, garage, lo-fi production, and vocals straight out of the gothic school of Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

But it is better than all that and transcends that from which it was born.

Probably difficult to overstate how influential this album is, and the lame "you had to be there" is inadequate. For both The Cramps and DEVO were products of Ohio, low rent art scenes, and desperation to smash back at the sludge coming from the payola radio of 1970s America. What is ironic is the Cramps were accused of embracing a cartoonish version of Satanic theatrics as part of their image, while meanwhile head-banger music as ludicrous as a spandex pentagram was chronicled with precision and admiration by CREAM.

For anyone starting a band and considering your placement in the pantheon of rock genre, this is a must listen.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album by the Greatest Band Ever?.......2006-11-10

The Cramps are very polarizing. Most people hate the very concept of them and loathe their existence. But if the idea of rockin' monsters, a big rockabilly beat, and the rantings of a wildman sound like something you'd be interested in, then this record is the place to start. Songs the Lord Taught Us was the debut album by the Cramps, following their EP Gravest Hits released the previous year in 1979. In this first full length, the Cramps unleashed a sickness that the country wasn't ready for - and, frankly, still isn't. The album sounded fantastic, despite the weird lyrics (full of werewolves, psycho killers, and other assorted unsavory members of society) and the extreme guitar work. Imagine Sonic Youth, perhaps, in a rockabilly context; that begins to scrape the top layer of the solos of Bryan Gregory. Alterniatively, it has been described as a five car pileup i on the Jersey Turnpike. That vision gives a sense of the evident dementia at work in this lovely record.
Recommended for anyone who loves the idea that Elvis Presley might have been replaced by Frankenstien's monster, and what that might have been like.

4 out of 5 stars File Under Sacred Music.......2005-12-14

From the opening riffs of "TV Set" to the psyched out cover of the old torch-jazz classic "fever" this album comes out swinging and doesn't let up.

Rockabilly and Psychobilly fans alike should have a good time with this one.

5 out of 5 stars I was walking by a pawn shop..........2005-11-04

...and I heard the song "Sunglasses After Dark" being played from behind the door. Before that I had never heard The Cramps, yet I ran in and bought the CD right out of the stereo for $4. This rocks from start to finish, and is the best straight-through listen album I own.
