Joanna Newsom's voice--a piercing flutter that's pitched somewhere between Björk and a hand brake--is an acquired taste. But to the uninitiated, it's not nearly as impenetrable as her cosmic poetry or, for that matter, baroque music. The 24-year-old Californian harpist's second album is a five-track concept piece loosely based on its namesake, the mythological drowned city of the Bretons. We say "loosely" because she leaves plenty of room for digressions on meteoroids and birds flying into windows. While Ys was recorded by minimalist Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey), it includes lush string arrangements by Van Dyke Parks (Brian Wilson) and the final mix was done by sonic experimentalist Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Tortoise). The result is an album that sounds unlike anything else. And despite containing spectacularly beguiling songs that stretch out past 15 minutes, every second seems to drip with magic. You certainly don't get that with Ashlee Simpson. --Aidin Vaziri

LACKS ANY REAL SOUL OR CREATIVE SEARCH FOR TRUTH OR ART...MUSIC WILL GO GOOD WITH AN "EDGY-GAP" STORE...

1 out of 5 stars She makes me wish I were deaf.......2007-07-14

Here voice makes me want to stab my ears with and icepick until I die. Only hardcore avant-guard indie hipsters with a penchant for un-melodic, rhythmless non-music need apply. How anyone could like this is beyond me. Calling her the American Bjork is a tremendous disservice to the Icelandic Queen. Why is there not an option for zero stars?

5 out of 5 stars excellent second album.......2007-07-01

Joanna Newsom has composed the music and wrote the lyrics that are complex, unique and beautiful. She is on the most talented new artists today and I was happy to discover her music. I would warmly recommend this album, as well as her first CD, "Milk-Eyed Mender".

2 out of 5 stars Self-consciously coquettish overintellectualized indie schmuck.......2007-06-29

What is it with every woman in "underground" music insisting on being cute and smart and falsely weird? (The word "underground" is in quotes because any album that costs more than $250,000 to make and tops every single best-of list of its release year cannot really be considered under the radar.) It's like they have such horrible self-image problems that they must always wear a cute outfit, play an unexpected instrument, and sing in a disaffected manner, and they are absolutely GUSHED over in the press. This is just one aspect of the Pitchforkization of music, a faux democratization of taste that results in nothing but hype and backlash--no substance, all fear, just cycle after cycle like a dog who can't tell its own tail from a stick.

[ETA: It's appallingly obvious that, based on some of the responses to this review, we have not learned the lessons that those righteous and fearless feminists and punk rockers attempted, and bless 'em, how they tried, to instill in music fans. It's also obvious that the "sexism" portrayed above extends beyond this review into current "indie" culture, in that ugly dudes with beards can score hits, but there's nary a hairy female armpit on the scene these days, and women who fall into this trap by frilling themselves up in such a self-conscious way are doing nothing to further the cause against discrimination towards women. So if someone wants to be shocked by sexism, then be shocked by something that is actually hugely, poisonously sexist and stop throwing knives at amazon.com reviews written by those who are highly irritated that "feminism" is warped to defend all sorts of horrific things.]

Now that I've gotten that rant out of the way, onto the record: I've been listening to this for several months, and I cannot figure out why Newsom is creating what she is and why people (self included) are actually listening to it.

--Does she tell compelling stories? No, not really--the language is obscured and veiled, and even then you know exactly which side she's on in her morality tales. There's nothing complex or surprising about a bear being manipulated and taken advantage of by a monkey, even in Newsom's words, and the obvious plot ending solidifies the fact that Newsom cannot and will never be able to process the moral ambiguities that most great artists--including many that she professes to admire, like Neil Young--can create. Why should I care about a bear? Even if it is an allegory, and a piss poor one at that, I think the whole song should've spared us all and jumped into the water with Ursula.

--Does she use language in interesting ways? On occasion she does, I'll give her that. I have to say that "Sawdust and Diamonds" contains one of the loveliest descriptions of a birth this side of Patti Smith's "Kimberly"--"I was all horns and thorns, sprang up fully formed, knock-kneed and upright." (Funny, though, that when I think of the term "fully formed," being knock-kneed doesn't immediately come to mind.) But the rest of the song's trite meditation on puppeteering and meandering, uselessly vague pastoral imagery render that line, which might have been a good start to something far more interesting, absolutely pointless. And that's what so much of this is. She also has a terrible thesaurus addiction, and will drop an awkward passage without even reconsidering it. You know who else, more famous than Newsom and also praised in her early career, did this? That's right, Alanis Morissette. Perhaps Newsom should stand naked in the street for her next video to make the comparison more apt, because at least Alanis lets it all lyrically hang out while Newson gives none of herself to her art.

--Does it sound good? Well, not really. I used the word "meandering" earlier, and so much of the music on this record does just that. Poor Van Dyke Parks, trying to shine a turd. The composition is so self-aware and cloying, and if there were words to listen to and actual ideas on this record they wouldn't be allowed to breathe. Perhaps it's all a smoke screen to distract from the fact that Joanna Newsom has nothing to say.

Why do I think that Newsom is fraught with naught? Yes, this is only her second album, and yes, she is young and fresh out of creative writing school, but when I hear her sing the word "desire" there's absolutely none there. It's the audio equivalent of getting up every morning and going to work in an office about which you are ambivalent and apathetic. And even the least paid, least hip cubicle grunts know what desire is, surely! Hell, Rimbaud's career as a writer was over by the time he was 24, but his throwaways had far more depth than the best Newsom can do here.

So if I don't like it so much, why am I giving this two whole stars? Because Joanna Newsom is the same age as me, has recorded two albums, and has made enough money to buy a house, which is far more than I've been able to do in an equal amount of time (though unequal opportunities were available, which could lead me to a discussion of her connections and social status/economic disparities from which I will spare you). I suppose she deserves some credit for having her finances in order, without having to resort to grunt work. And yes, I am jealous that someone who created something so insipid is now famous and wealthy. So it goes.

5 out of 5 stars raw yet refined.......2007-06-23

This is my second attempt at posting a review here. The first review had the phrase "my arse" in it (using the other word for "arse") so I can only assume that's why it didn't get posted. I am appalled at some of the things said of Joanna Newsom and her album on Amazon. Some people go so far as to personally attack the artist herself for being privileged (??), for playing a harp in an attempt to be different, and for wearing "cute dresses." Hmmm...

This album holds a special place in my collection. Never have I heard such ambitious, moving, and consistently powerful lyrics on a single album. This is a difficult album to understand for many people, but I find dissecting the lyrics and researching the musician's intent much more interesting and rewarding than anything on the radio these days. As for the music itself, being no music theory major, I can only say that it consistently pulls an emotional response from me; viscerally and intellectually, I find it cathartic, stimulating, raw (no thesaurus used here, guys and girls.) Joanna Newsom certainly does a terrific job on the harp, in composition and execution, and Van Parks' complementary pieces add a certain largeness of sound to the album that matches its largeness of vision.

The vitriol I have seen against Newsom in a few of the reviews here is unnerving and worrying. I would hope that those who do not like her album will in future attempt to logically explain why without succumbing to posting hateful and sexist insults. This does nothing to inform would-be buyers of the album's strengths and weaknesses (if you think the album has any--I personally think it doesn't: it is exactly what it should be.)

Five stars all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-06

I cried the first time I listened to this version of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie." I feel so lucky for the opportunity to listen to Joanna's voice get better and better and better through the years. The way she sings the line in this song, "And I am watching you/ And you are starry, starry, starry..." has always gotten to me, and with her improved vocal abilities here she manages to add a new degree of touching nuance to this favorite of moments. Give it a listen, I think you'll see what I mean.

I tend to not enjoy micro-reviewing records song by song, so I think I will leave it at that. This is for Joanna both a return to a more stripped down musical presentation and a leap forward in her development as a singer. This EP makes me so happy.

4 out of 5 stars Great companion to the "YS" album.......2007-07-05

Joanna Newsome is not for everyone, that's for sure, basically Joanna singing with harp, and sparse other instruments. Her 2006 "YS" album created quite a stir, though. (It was my 17 yr. daughter who introduced me to her, incidentally). This live EP was recorded on the YS Fall 06 tour.

"EP" (3 tracks, 24 min.) brings a new song, "Colleen", which is pretty much in the vein of the "YS" album. Next is "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie", from "The Milk-Eyed Mender" album, in a slightly altered version from the album. Then comes a 13 min. blow-out version of "Cosmia", from the "YS" album, which here live sounds much more invigerated than the album version, and I can't stop playing it.

If you are familiar with Joanna Newsome, this is a great companion to the "YS" album. If you are new, this is the prefect introduction to her sound, and I highly recommed checking it out for those of you. No, it's not mainstream, far from it, but this is great music by all accounts.

5 out of 5 stars lovely, deceptively simple.........2007-06-12

for me, this new ep makes up for the pretensions of the Ys album; the band is amazing, and newsom has never sounder better.

i hope this bodes well for the future, for one of my favorite artists.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive Beware!.......2007-05-23

It took me almost 2 years to warm up to her first album MIlk Eyed Mender. My brother in law would play it over and over again when we went to visit. Then after one of our visits I couldn't shake the songs from my head and I had to hear them! I was hooked! This ep is also addictive! Newsom's songs have an optimistic and other worldly elegance that is missing in mainstream music culture. These songs are especially endearing, ( is it the band accompaniment?) and I especially love the mix of melodies pointing to a more ethnic sound in some of the songs. A mixing of sounds, it's fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars I Wouldn't Get Too Excited About This.......2007-04-25

The new song, "Colleen," is, lyric-wise, alarmingly close to boilerplate dorm-room Tori Amosity. (The only Joanna-ish touch is that the song's awakening-to-her-oppression heroine seems to be a were-whale.)

Both "Milk-Eyed Mender" and "Ys" have a muscularity to the playing and singing that's absent here--the arrangements (performed with a small acoustic combo) are much more noodly, and Joanna sings in a more "controlled" (i.e, less yelpy) manner.

For me this EP lacks the loopy imagination and expansiveness of her previous two records. I hope the relatively-lackluster songs here don't represent the shape her future work will take.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Gigli.......2007-03-09

After Caruso's death, Beniamino Gigli became one of the most renowned tenors in the world. His rich voice well justified his reputation. While some of his mannerisms (the little "cries" and "catches" in his voice) can be a bit overdone, they were not atypical of the time. A few reactions to specific cuts.

"Celeste Aida" from Verdi's opera is smoothly sung; his rich voice serves to good effect. As already noted, the little "cries" are unfortunate, but hardly an issue. His higher notes flow smoothly from lower ones, in a seamless fashion. It would have been nice to hear him try for the piano at the end, but he did not choose to do so. Any way you slice it, a nice version of a glorious aria.

"La donna e mobile" is taken at a rather slow pace. It is smoothly sung but does not really catch the spirit of the wretched Duke. He shows wonderful breath control. This is more a workmanlike than scintillating version. On the other hand, "Che gelida manina" is wonderful. Smooth, elegant singing. A very well done high note. An iconic version.

The twin arias from "Tosca," "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle" are very well executed. His rendering of the final "la vita" in the latter aria is, again, noteworthy.

And now for something completely different. . . . "Funiculi funicula" is spritely sung, in good spirits, and it is a lot of fun! Most enjoyable. "O Sole mio," likewise, is well rendered. As previously noted, some "off putting" cries, but the warm, full voice more than makes up for such mannerisms. He does not overpower this song with operatic technique. The end result is most satisfying.

"La danza" befuddled the great Caruso (in his version, his breathing fell apart at one point). But not Gigli. Well sung, good breath control. Bravo Gigli!

Back to opera. . . . "Nessun dorma" is well sung. The vocalization is smooth. Gigli's voice soars over orchestra and other voices. The final "Vincero" rings out.

While this CD is not without some questions, as noted above, it is worth 5 stars for its full portrayal of the work of Gigli. As such, it can be recommended for anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to this singer.

5 out of 5 stars Gigli Is A Wonderful Singer!.......2006-07-31

It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang. Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality! I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Besides listening to Gigli on Cd, you'd be doing yourself a favor to buy a movie in which Gigli appears and sings. The movie is called "Non Ti Scordar di Me". I'll try to find it on amazon or from "The Bel Canto Society" and give it a "review" also. It's an "old movie" but it has a VERY touching story, is well acted, and you get to see and hear Gigli which is a great treat since he has been gone for at least 50 years. He "comes alive" in this CD and in the movie. You will "thrill" to the sound of his voice. Enjoy! Email:boland7214@aol.

4 out of 5 stars A Lovely Bit of Froth.......2007-02-11

I bought this opera because I enjoy the music of Lalo, especially the Symphonie Espagnol, I like French opera, and because it features Alain Vanzo. This is an "easy listening" sort of opera, with pleasant, accessible, not particularly memorable but very melodic music, very well performed. The choruses are interesting and there is a definite folk-music feel to some of them.
The plot is a little silly, being a story about a fabled land north of Brittany that is now underwater. Belgian bass-baritone Jules Bastin sings the title role, which is actually not all that large. The major male role, Mylio, is sung by the late Monegasque (born in Monacco) tenor, Alain Vanzo. Vanzo, who died in 2002, was perhaps the last great exponent of the traditional "French" style of tenor: which is a light, lyrical voice, very sweet with refined styling. Vanzo does not disappoint. He brings all his beauty of tone and elegance of style to his role. Vanzo can also be heard to excellent effect on recordings of Delibes' "Lakme", with Joan Sutherland, and Gounod's "Mireille", with Mirela Freni. The other singers are fine without being memorable.
The sound quality is good. GALA is a label whose CDs range from good to dreadful, and this is in the good range. And at the price you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars A curious mixture of Wagner, Celtic melodies and Saint Saens.......2006-07-01

I was familiar with the Hispano-French composer Edouard Lalo (1823-1892) through his justly popular Symphonie Esganole and also his beautiful Symphony in G and his cello concerto. Seeing a recording of his opera Le Roi d'Ys was available through Amazon, I decided to try it since his other compositions are quite enjoyable.

Lalo married relatively late in life to Breton mezzo-soprano Julie Besner d'Maligny and promptly proceeded to write a pair of operas for her. Le Roi d'Ys was the second opera (Fiesque was the first). Lalo had difficulty in getting either performed. Eventually he was able to get Le Roi d'Ys perfomed at the the Opera Comique in 1886. Although this opera has not become very popular, it has attracted attention from very fine singers throughout the years.

The music is a curious mixture of styles. Most of the choruses apparently are derived from the folk music of the Brittany peninsula of France. These choruses are quite lovely with their lilting celtic melodies. A few of the arias and duets also can be surmised to have origins in the Breton melodies and these are also quite lovely. Most of the arias, duets, terzettos, quartets, etc. however are definitely Wagnerian in style and contrast markedly with the Breton-type parts of the opera. As I am not overly fond of the heavy strident style of Wagner, I found these a bit hard to get through, but they are nice for the style of music and very well performed. In other places, an organ comes vividly into play with a style evoking Saint Saens. Yet other parts seem to presage Carl Orff a little bit. Throughout the opera, trumpet fanfares are common and add a touch of brightness.

The quality of the performance and the sound are quite good. This performance was recorded in 1973 by the Orchestre et Chouers Lyique conducted by Pierre Derveaux. Although I was unfamiliar with the soloists, Alain Vanzo as Mylio, Jane Rhodes as Margared, Andrea Guiot as Rozenn, Jules Bastin as the King, and Robert Massard as Karnec all sing their roles well. The rest of the cast, chorus, and orchestra also fill their roles well.

This opera is an interesting example of second-tier opera from the past. Although a session with it will bring the listener to an understanding of why it has never become part of the standard repertoire, it has its brilliant moments.I found the Breton-based choruses and arias/duets especially inviting and some of these are quite lovely. The Wagnerian elements are a bit too strident for my tastes and will keep me from listening to this on a frequent basis.

The second CD contains several "bonus tracks" of historical recordings of arias from Le Roi d'Ys that were made between 1901 and 1947. As such, this allows the listener to hear a number of singers who would otherwise remain unknown. Several soprano and tenor arias are presented. There are 5 versions of the tenor aria "Vainement, ma bien-aimee" for the character Mylio. This a particularly lovely aria with a Celtic lilt that the great John McCormack would have been quite at home with. The recordings of this aria date from 1901 to 1932 and are all, in a word, magnificent, performed variously by Leon Lafitte, Miguel Villabella, Joseph Rogatchewsky, Gaston Micheletti, and Andre d'Arkor.

If you like Wagner, you may well like this recording. If you like the lovely melodies of Brittany, you may also like this recording. This may never be destined to become anyone's favorite opera, but it is an interesting piece of operatic history. I do not regret purchasing this recording at the price Amazon offers it at. It will never be my favorite piece of music but it is an interesting listen and I do delight in the numerous versions of Vainement, ma-bien aimee. The melody from this aria is absolutely infectious and I will no doubt listen to the 5 versions offered again and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for lovers of French Orchestral music.......2006-04-29

Paul Paray is one of the best interpreters of French orchestral music whose stereo recordings are gathered together in this budget priced box, and offer terrific value to the consumer: great recordings/ performances AND sound, at a low price. First off, this item is highly recommended.

There may be some listeners who have favorite recordings of certain works in this set, such as the Saint Saens ORGAN Symphony, the Ravel TOMBEAU DE COUPERIN (Paray strikes me as rather too fast in the Forlane movement, and other parts), or CARMEN Suites. But it is great to have all this music in one set, and Paray is not inferior to anyone in this music. There are several rare works here, including Paray's own MASS. And there is Bizet's rarely heard LA PATRIE Overture, and Thomas Overtures to RAYMOND and MIGNON; Herold's ZAMPA; and Saint Saens' Bacchanale from SAMSON ET DALILA. The Detroit Symphony of the late 1950s/early 60s plays wonderfully, sounding as good as many more prestigious "big name" orchestras.

Of course other listeners have favorites and may not agree with my perception, but I enjoyed this set alot, and will continue to return to it in the future. That's saying alot for one who's a committed fan of Karl Bohm (1894-1981), Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) and Bruno Walter (1876-1962). The "French" sound and style Paray drew from the Detroit Symphony is much different from Bohm, Ormandy, Schuricht, or Walter, but is most enjoyable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Paray's MLP French Gems Are Back!, .......2005-06-07

Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. However, they are unfortunately now being sold at full-price, despite a competing Living Stereo hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items receiving their CD debut in this series.

These various performances of French Orchestral Music by the great Paul Paray have always been among my favorite MLP offerings. While three of these recordings continue to be available in their original CD incarnations -- the Ibert/Ravel, the Bizet Suites and Saint-Saens discs -- the remaining two discs of material have been out-of-print for some time. However, with this box set Paray's Lalo/Chausson and French Opera Highlights albums are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been reasonably priced, however they are not SACD Hybrids. This Paray set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok and Tchaikovsky, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-04-16

I was turned onto this album in Mexico over 6 years ago and found
it fascinating from the start. It's a heady and aggressive piece of music divided into five tracks that by turns reminds you of
bands as diverse as Soft Machine, King Crimson, ELP and even some
more recent stuff like Univers Zero and Mars Volta.

It does however mange to somehow exist, live and breathe entirely
in it's own world thanks to the otherworldly keyboard and vocal
delivery by Gianni Leone. Painting with piano, mellotron, moog,
spinet and organ, he creates a rich and dark tapestry, while also
showing some prodigious chops on both instruments. The rhythm
section of Gianchi Stringa (drums) and Vito Manzari (bass) play
nimbly underneath, effortlessly grooving through various time
signatures and tempo changes. The playing is a bit sloppy by
british standards but I don't anybody who's into this sort of
weird, wonderful music will care much. The guitar, in the person
of Lino Aiello is manic, at times given the impression of being
on the verge of collapse yet always holding the music together
with savage bursts that lie somewhere between Elton Dean's sax
in soft machine and the wilder of Jimi Hendrix's solos. Sweet.

Sure, the sound is a bit dated and yes, the composition seems a
bit clumsy at times, but this album is essential for anyone who
enjoys original, intense prog. As a bonus, you get the single
'La Tua Casa Comoda', a nice little pop ditty. Worth every penny
if you like adventurous music.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme Italian Prog Masterpiece!.......2005-10-23

Italy had it's fair share of good prog rock bands. some of the bigger ones that spring to mind are Goblin, PFM, or Banco. those bands put out some great music but never really broke new ground that wasn't already being dug into by other bands like King Crimson, Yes, etc. not that the Italians were ripping off anyone's style, but they all seemed to have their place safely within "mainstream" prog circles. but for those who can appreciate some of the more "out there" style of prog rock from bands like Magma, or even Japan's Hundred Sights Of Koenji, then this album from Il Balletto Di Bronzo comes highly recommended. there is a manic, and frantic kind of mood to this record, esp. in the synthesizers. it sounds like the keyboard player couldn't keep his hands still; but his playing is fabulous and his sound manages to push the songs into an even higher stratoshpere. the guitars are also cool and very acid rock with some surprisingly heavy licks that wouldn't sound out of place in some of today's more angular post-rock groups. the vocals range from morose crooning to creepy gang choruses and of course, operatic bellowing. but it's all in good taste and shows great talent and an ear for variety. these songs are long, drawn out epics full of twists and turns that make me feel like i'm in some kind of torch-lit Italian catacombs searching for an exit. Y's is a dark and powerful rock and roll record that reveals new strange worlds with each listen. killer band photos, too, by the way. love the wooly boots!

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE THE DANCING SKELETONS.......2005-10-08

They hold within a hidden JOY. Secretely they ride mysterious floating vehicles, made from decayed men, capable of transcending through various realms between the physical and alternate realities. Skulls appear to smile because they are. They know the truth that lies therein, once the flesh rots away. You must join them. Help them. Become them. They invite you to stay, lest you stink alone. You have entered the realm of YS. Like an amusement park ride where the operator kicks the controls into high gear until bodies are hurled off in tandem with the vomit. Then the rush of euphoria is slowed down just long enough for you to catch a breath. But that breath is borrowed. They have come to collect. MAKE IT STOP!! And now the fun begins. These skulls with their connected skeletal remains laugh and dance before the flames, but if you look hard enough you can see the strings. One of 'em stirs a big black cauldron. Sometimes a head or another body part will float up from the bubbles and smoke. He stirs with a human leg, and it ain't his own. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MEN BEHIND THE CURTAINS. They are the brains inside these laughing skulls. They control not only the skeletons but also the demented carousel operator. They are working a spell on your mind as well. They play tricks on you. They relax you with melody or even make you laugh with their hokeyness. Be not amused for too long with their craftiness, for the true objective is to be revealed. Those remarkable keyboard arpeggios and precise rhythm passages you hear are really something else. Something sinister and forboding is in your cd player. It will give you chills and make your skin crawl. And no, its not the weather. QUICK! Run! Hurry while the music slows down!!! Ah, but they pursue, inch by obsconded inch. Like some twisted cacaphonic nightmare when you try to run but you end up being pulled backward, you fight with all your being, but to no avail you descend back into the fresh grave they have so lovingly prepared for you. Look back and their hands, though strong and omnipotent, are invisible and omnipresent. (This happens at 4:42 , track 5, and if you listen hard enough, you can hear the witches shreik and wooo--oooh-aaahhh in delight. Alas the music stops, and the witches sing unaccompanied. Thus ends YS. The rest of the CD is a bonus track single or something tht has nothing to do with the original album. The lunatic who smiles as if possessed by demons, euphoric in his torture, he knows. He's been there. He laughs at YOU because you're next. He loves the black night, the skeletons, the flying bats, the cold chill, the chorusing withces, and that incredible drummer. He digs that creepy organ. Those organs. All those spare parts scattered about. He dances like a madman to balletto di bronzo because, well because he is a madman, and balletto is his favorite group, his only group. The anthem of his madness, YS, has been playing over and over in his head since 1972.

4 out of 5 stars Great Italian Prog album........2005-09-30

My english is not very good(i'm in México), but here i go... By listening to Ys its easy to understand why it became a leyend. For a 1972 recording, it sounds pretty new. Ys is a rock opera about an old, technified city (five tracks), but this edition contains a bonus track named "La tua casa comoda", where they used a Xilophone or something similar, that results in a great moment for the ears.
The bass is just great, from jazz to crazy prog to lead... You can hear a lot of instruments with keyboards, like mellotron or piano. Those instruments gives Ys a touch of greatness.
The album sounds a little bit dark and psychodelic, but in general is classic Italian prog.
***

5 out of 5 stars Simply great!.......2003-05-18

I could sum up this entire recording in one word...WOW! Dark and brooding, intense and sinister. I simply cannot believe this came out when it did! Just buy it, for no other reason than to have something to blow away all of your friends Black Sabbath, Sepultura, or White Zombie CDs come Halloween time!

Put together in evident haste, this collection is nevertheless a surefire, appetite-whetting starter kit both for the budding operaphile and for the simply intimidated. The samplings include some of the greatest voices from EMI's vaults: here you'll find the polar opposites Callas and Caballe, the golden wonder of Wunderlich and early Carreras, and a host of other singers who've made their stamp on this century. Emphasis is on the soprano and tenor range, while the lower voices are given short shrift, and the selections cleave predictably to standard Italian and French repertory (with an occasional surprise, such as an aria from Lalo's Le Roi d'Ys). Still, the nearly three and a half hours of music represented will make a ready convert of anyone who hasn't experienced the specially heightened, time-stopping expressivity--beyond the power of mere song--that is the aria's function and will likely spark a desire to explore the larger operatic context in several cases. And though the lack of a booklet with texts or at least bios of the artists is frustrating, this is a good place to begin for an overview of the mesmeric power extraordinary voices can wield. --Thomas May

If you love opera - this collection of some of the lovliest arias ever sung by artists from Caballe to Freni, from Delibes to Puccini - will inspire you. It is a wonderful gift for friends or for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Aria.......2001-08-03

In my small operetic mind, this set of Cd's has completely captured me for the Opera. I was a young and upcoming musician in my youth. I'v been around the block "as it were" with the Classics. This collection is indeed, the benchmark upon which all others would hope to aspire.

Congradulations EMI for an incredible vision of the greatest opeatic moments recorded.

Gosh what's next?

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate indeed.......2000-08-02

If you don't like the idea of buying whole operas, or if you're a newcomer to opera - this is an extremely good collection / introduction, worth every single cent. The collection features many of the worlds greatest singers, giving their interpretations of some of the world's greatest arias. The compilation itself is very tasteful and covers a wide range from Handel to early 20th century composers. You won't miss any important stuff from the history of opera, except maybe Wagner and the most modern operas - I'll come back to that fact later. The compilers have actually put some lesser known, although no less beautiful, arias here, that oftenly are neglected on ordinary opera-collections, why the name `ultimate collection' is more than correct in that aspect.

EMI have a enormous archive to pick their recordings from, and that of course makes it easy to find first rate interpretations of all the arias included in this collection, and I do think that almost all of the arias are wonderfully sung here. It may be possible to find better performances of single numbers here and there, but I've not yet heard a more complete, wellmatched, and so thrillingly sung collection.

Well then, is there nothing wrong with this compilation? You might find it a little odd that there are so many soloarias and so few duets, terzettos a.s.o, especially since the drama in operas oftenly is greater in numbers with more than one singer. You might also wish that some of the recordings had been a little more modern (most of these recordings were made during the 50's, 60's & 70's) giving place to younger performers that still are singing on the stages, but those are minor objections when the over all quality is so high.

The maybe strongest objection to this collection is that there is not one single part from any of Wagner's operas, and not any number sung in german, nor is there any parts from modern or russian operas. That may be a miss if you're interested in Wagner, russian and modern opera - on the other hand I think you should watch Wagners, russian and modern operas before listening to recordings of them - and if you've seen them and liked them you will probably buy the whole opera anyway. Therefor I still think that this is a extremely strong and complete compilation - the best I've run into so far. Easy to listen to, yet never banal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some truly outstanding performances.......2004-07-11

This two CD set from Deutsche Grammophon does as it states: it offers some of the greatest tenors of our time in some truly outstanding performances. Thirty-seven arias all told, take a little getting used to as most "all tenor" recordings do. But overall it's a worthy and worthwhile effort. As those who read these reviews know I have a clear preference for CDs that have and maintain a theme throughout, so when I sit down to listen I don't have to keep the clicker nearby. Here, because the CD's represent a collection of favorites, the emphasis also has to be on consistency of musical reproduction, and with the exception of one or two songs, the consistency in the latter regard is good throughout. So, on these two criteria: theme and sound quality, "Masters" gets high grades. As far as selection goes, I might have suggested a change or two, but only one or two. The tenor voice can grate and on occasion it does just that. Still, there are more standouts than drawbacks: Pavarotti's "Le camarade est amoureux" from Donizetti's "La fille du regiment", for its rich, rousing chorus and full orchestration; Jose Carreras "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's "Serse" for its soulful melody - and there are many more. I had to listen to this CD three or four times before writing this review because I didn't want to miss what was occurring here, and I'm glad I did. It grows on you and stands as a truly remarkable assemblage of some powerful, moving music. These are the strengths of this set and why I would recommend it. There are some curiously abrupt endings (4 fade-outs) on side two - maybe the producers were counting minutes and realized that some songs just had to be cut - bad idea. These are noticeable and annoying, as in Juse Bjorling's "Ingemisco" in Verdi's "Requiem" and Carlo Bergonzi's "Come un bel di di maggio" from Giordano's "Andrea Chenier" and at least two more. Where did the endings go? Lastly, a personal recommendation on when best to listen to this set: no kids, no phone calls, no group discussions. I took it in the car for a few rides and then after I got used to it moved indoors -- and now listen to it when I am sitting and relaxing. I recommend it. (PJW)

This is a fantastic new collection of different classical music styles, languages, and singers. The production quality is excellent. If you are interested in singing or love opera then you would probably enjoy this CD. You may find some excellent singers you haven't been exposed to. I can't wait until they release Bass, Alto & Soprano.
