5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-07-07

I have loved R & B for years, and this collection of old and new hits from Billy Ocean is a must to have. It's hard to find just one CD that has of you favorites. You may end up getting 2-3 CDs to get his whole collection. But this pone has them all. It is a good buy for the money!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant British R+B singer.......2005-03-14

Born in Trinidad as Leslie Charles, he was raised in Britain from an early age, eventually coming to public attention as Billy Ocean via two UK number two hits and two other UK top twenty hits in the seventies.

Billy's first UK hit, Love really hurts without you, was a catchy, up-tempo soul song that made number two in the UK. The follow-up, LOD Love on delivery, just made the top twenty. Next came Stop me if you've heard it all before, which just missed the top ten but isn't included here. After that came his second number two hit, Red light spells danger.

Billy's career seemed to be blossoming but it was at this point that things went wrong. His record label, GTO, was taken over by a major and although he remained for a few years, he only had two minor UK hits (not included here) to show for his efforts. He eventually signed with another label, Jive, a move that revived his recording career.

On his new label, Billy had three American number one hits (Caribbean queen, There'll be sad songs to make you cry, Get outta my dreams), all of which did well in Britain (two made the top ten and another just missed), a British number one hit (When the going gets tough the tough get going) and another British top ten hit, Suddenly, together with a few minor hits.

I generally like his seventies music best (and there is another compilation focusing exclusively on that period) but most people remember him for his eighties music, which I also enjoy. This compilation includes three of Billy's seventies hits together with all his big hits of the eighties. As such, it comes very close to justifying its title Ultimate collection and that will do for most people.

5 out of 5 stars Hit Zone!.......2005-02-24

Like 1984's SUDDENLY,this album would spawn four hits. They are WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH(THE TOUGH GET GOING) from the 1985 film,THE JEWEL OF THE NILE. In the video, the film's stars Michael Douglas,Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito appear as background vocalists backing up Billy Ocean performing the song on stage. Also there's LOVE IS FOREVER,a beautiful love ballad that did not appear on the 1989 GREATEST HITS compilation. The title track is cool. So is THERE WILL BE SAD SONGS(TO MAKE YOU CRY). The other songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars good billy ocean record.......2003-02-14

this is a very good album its so eighties i remember seeing the video for when the going gets tough little danny davito and kathleen turner dancing was very good times then to bad we cant turn back the clock best songs 1. love zone 2. sad songs 3 tough gets going

4 out of 5 stars An 80's Classic!.......2002-04-18

This gem of an album, while sounding seriously dated at times, is still a pleasure from start to finish. The opener, "When The Going Gets Tough...." is a fun song with a great melody (especially on the bridge) that hearkens back to the mid 80's and times of sheer enjoyment (remember the video with Danny Devito, Michael Douglas et all?) and fun of the forgettable movie it was featured in "Jewel Of The Nile". The burbling, bass popping title track is the best cut here, with it's light jazz flourishes and serious R&B groove (I'd love to know who the bassist and guitarist are, they really anchor this baby)"Love Zone" never sounds old or trite, it's a timeless track. The biggest hit here, "....Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" is still a lovely, if saccharine ballad that has stood the test of time fairly well and still gets regular play on light FM stations across the nation. It will somehow endure through the ages.
All in all a nice, if not indespensible, collection. The title track elevates it just slightly above average.

4 out of 5 stars I bitterly regret Horst Meisterfluscher.......2006-02-05

I bitterly regret the inclusion of the unforgivably homophobic Horst Meisterfluscher's review and his apparent unnending ignorance. The Ocean Blue is a cool band. Check 'em out. This CD is good as is most of their stuff. Perfect in about any mix because nothing sounds like them, mellow and inticing. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars ocean blue fan on deserted island.......2005-07-24

If I were on a deserted island and could only have ten CDs, one of them would be Beneath The Rhythm and Sound. This is truly one of my favorite CDs of all time. It is melodic, ethereal, and timeless. I will be listening to this CD when I'm an old woman. I love all their albums, but this one is probably my favorite. Emotions Ring is so good, it makes me want to cry.

5 out of 5 stars Stylistic monotony never sounded so fab.......2005-04-04

I bitterly regret the inclusion of the unforgivably faggy ICE SKATING AT NIGHT. It mars an otherwise perfect record. What differentiates The Ocean Blue from the usual buttload of sugarcrap powerpop is The OB's addiction to guitar-chord tension. That's what makes them fab: that guitar-chord tension. And I really don't mind their shamelessly overt plagiarism of Morrissey's la-la-la shtick.

4 out of 5 stars This disc is so "Sublime"........2004-08-31

Too bad almost nobody has ever heard of these guys, but good for me. I actually like their self-titled album more, but this is nearly as great. This album has a very pleasing vibe, it's alt-pop, upbeat, mellow, and everything I like. The track "Sublime" was a minor hit, and is incredibly catchy. Other good songs are "Either Or", "Ice Skating At Night", and "Crash", even though I like them all. If you like that early 90's brit-pop sound at all, you should really like "Beneath The Rhythm & Sound". It'll give you "Peace Of Mind".

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2003-03-28

If you're looking for glorious music, look no further. TOB is, to use one of their song titles, sublime! There isn't one boring or bad track on this album; all the tracks work together to create a whole.

"Sublime" was their big hit in the early 90's, and it really sold me on the band. In the days when everyone was grunged-out, screaming, and shrieking their guitars, TOB offered quite, subtle, soothing music which made me think that there was beauty in the world after all. BTRAS is one of the few CD's I own that I can listen to without skipping tracks. Other songs on it that I highly recommend (even though they're all good) are "Crash" and "Emotions Ring."

Glorious!!

5 out of 5 stars Urban Ocean.......2007-03-21

That trademark funky urban and danceable soul of the 80's seemed to flourish starting around 1983 and into `84-85. You know what I'm talking about; The Pointer Sisters, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Ready For The World....it goes on and on. One of the forerunners of this magnificent genre of music in the 80's was none other than Caribbean-born Billy Ocean. One listen to that voice and you know who it is. He kind of sings with a deep richness like when you say "Ah" when the doctor is looking into your throat. I mean he really brings up the vocals from deep down. And yet he can reach the higher notes. His voice is so flexible and flawless and grooves along with every song, never missing a beat. In 1984, Billy came out with a remarkable album in "Suddenly," one of those albums that is a staple of the early 80's genre of funky urban and danceable soul. It is nostalgic, yet very timeless in my opinion and it takes me back to when times were a little less stressful.

"Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" - This is my favorite song from the album and hit the Billboard top 10 of 1984. Check out the groovy bass and jazzy saxophone! And those cute repetitive keyboard notes with the funky foot stomping beat are pretty darn cool! Oh yeah, and the sound effects to go with the lyrics are fun to listen to. There is magnificent orchestration here and the song is overall urban funky melodic fun. Billy's vocals are passionate with an urgency. This Caribbean queen has him losing his cool.

"Mystery Lady" - This is just your basic urban R&B funky song. It's very catchy and Billy's notes are flawless. The keyboards are cool and the harmonizing is fun. I love this song. Kick back and bop your head and let your mind drift.

"Syncopation" - Slowing it up a little, Billy gives us a smooth funky beat to chill out with. Billy sings of missing the "syncopation" he had with a certain woman who was having an affair.

"The Long And Winding Road" - Smooth, graceful and soft. Billy's rich vocals amongst easy-going melodies provide the perfect opportunity for a slow dance.

"Loverboy" - I absolutely love this song. The beat is like a funk-dance urban R&B disco-like groove. You cannot help but move on this song. Billy's vocals are soaring amongst the edgy, melodic guitars that keep the time just right. The synths/keyboards mirror the urgency that Billy is singing about; the intense need to be someone's love. This is one of the most addicting songs on the album. Is it any wonder that this song reached the Billboard top ten of 1985?

"Lucky Man" - Cute, catchy song featuring some nice piano, synths and a funky beat. Billy sings of being lucky to have the woman he has. Nothing too special about this song.

"Dancefloor" - True, this is a danceable song. Cool synths and that hand-slapping beat. Just a nice easy-going song. Nothing huge.

"If I Should Lose You" - Another easy-going song; and smooth with atmospheric and melodic keyboarding. Billy grooves along with his vocals as usual.

"Suddenly" - This is probably one of Billy's trademark love songs; beautiful and free-flowing. Billy's vocals are so silky and magnificent. It's a song about how life has new meaning once you find that love you've been looking for. It's just romantic and perfect for that special occasion.

Okay, so you know what to do now. Plunge into the "ocean" and get the goods! You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars His best album........2006-05-08

Truth be known, I'd probably keep this over his "Hits" disc. I say that because three of his absolute best songs are here in their original form, and some of his other hits border on cheese. Plus there's other good stuff here too. "Caribbean Queen (no more love on the run)" was a huge hit, as was the ballad "Suddenly", and I think my favorite is easily "Loverboy". Plus this has the minor hit "Mystery Lady", and a decent cover of "The Long And Winding Road". That's over half the album, and the remaining four songs I'd call good filler. Any fan of 80's pop/soul should consider this a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Great R&B!.......2005-02-24

Here is the beginning of Billy Ocean's consecutive hit-making. Four hits from this album include the title track,LOVERBOY,CARIBBEAN QUEEN(NO MORE LOVE ON THE RUN) and MYSTERY LADY. Another memorable song is a cover of the Beatles' recording THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD. Before Ocean,Peter Frampton covered the hit for the 1978 movie soundtrack SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. The other songs are great.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Suzie's favorites.......2003-07-14

I really really love the cd so so much! I like every songs on every track. I have three that's definitly my favorite in the whole wide world! The first one "Caribbean Queen" has every sensual side to it but I don't know that much about that song that is the only thing I know. The second song "Dancefloor" makes wanna get out on the dancefloor to groove all night long, it has a lot of energy and it really picks you up out of your seat-it keeps you movin' all night long. The third song, last but not least, "Suddenly" it has a magical ring to it when you listen to Billy when he sings and listening to the instruments it's like when you see an orchestra playing it sounds beautiful
that song is very very beautiful. There is an experience to that song is that you start to believe in a impossible dream of a magical moment to reveal the real you of who you are and who you can be is to believe in your dreams and yourself that you really do live with a real fairy tale life-I went through that in the year 1983 when I was 5 years old when I saw the movie "Cinderella" the very first time that made me think I wanna be like her a princess, now, I'm 25 years old! Now I know that dreams suddenly do come true all the time it's like when you look at miracle some kind of gift of who you wanna be-that song really means a lot to me but also everbody too as long as our dreams succeeds forever. I recommend this cd to everyone out there who are a big Billy Ocean fan like me.

5 out of 5 stars An 80's classic.......2001-01-10

Billy Ocean fused R&B/soul with pop/rock and ended up with an excellent album. "Carribean Queen" and "Loverboy" are both must-have 80's hits, and this album is the best place to hear them, because the versions here are much longer than the radio edits on his greatest hits CD! But then again, every song on this album is great, and the heartfelt cover of the Beatles' "Long and Winding Road" should win over people who don't normally appreciate 80's music. But if you are a fan of the 80's, you definitely need this album, and if you aren't, get it anyway!

3 out of 5 stars Not one of his bests.......2007-03-02

I've only really heard three of Billy Ocean's albums, but this is probably not his best. Billy Ocean was one of my favorite singers back in the early '80's, so I may enjoy this album more than others. His popular ballad, "The Colour Of Love", is one of the better hits, but I think I like "Here's To You" better. "Here's To You" has better lyrics, more positive than "The Colour Of Love", and the rhythm sounded just a little more like a tender ballad. "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" was a song that was popular on the radio back then, but seems a little silly to listen to these days. As a whole, this album disappoints a bit, but isn't too bad. Perhaps with a couple more hits on this album, it would have been one worth keeping for the long run.

5 out of 5 stars perfect album!!.......2006-10-09

Billy Ocean such as many other great artist , get so little recognition but these are the artist who actually paved the way for people r kelly and babyface , I suggest this album by far great when u in the mood with just that special person. I still listen to it till this day and play it like it was just new again!

5 out of 5 stars This album is Awesome!.......2005-09-11

Wow, this album is off the chain. Probably the best 80's music I've ever heard. Billy Ocean is very underated, and this is definitely his best album. Every song is dynamite, and the production is fantastic. Buy the darn thing, its excellent feel good music and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great R&B!.......2005-02-24

Like 1984's SUDDENLY and 1986's LOVE ZONE,this album, released in February 1988,spawned four hits. They are the title track, the love ballads THE COLOR OF LOVE and HERE'S TO YOU,and the powerful-sounding GET OUTTA MY DREAMS GET INTO MY CAR. The other songs are good. I like STAND AND DELIVER also. I never saw the 1988 film starring Lou Diamond Phillips so I don't know if that song appeared in the film. The other songs are great. Billy Ocean put out a dozen hits in the five-year period in which this album and the two predecessors were released. After this album,Ocean would start slowing down recording. Two more hits followed this album,LICENSE TO CHILL and I SLEEP BETTER(IN SOMEONE ELSE'S BED) which appeared new on the GREATEST HITS album, released in 1989.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album to follow Love Zone!.......2004-11-07

This Billy Ocean album is still one of my favorites! For him to follow the very successful Love Zone album with this platinum album is an understatement. The big hits were Get Out of My Dreams, The Colour of Love, and Tear Down These Walls, but they're no contest to my favorites here. They are the grooving Gun For Hire and the rumbling Pleasure. Some other songs I like are Soon as You're Ready, Calypso Girl, and Because of You. But Gun is still strong today with that superb horn section, the danceable rhythms and other aspects. I played that song over and over on the tape in 1988! One of 1988's best albums to be released in at a time when 1987 songs and albums were number one hits in May, June and the summer of '88.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Music at its best..........2004-05-21

I cannot reinforce enough how good this CD truly is. The music quality is at the top of its game, and it reflects the island soul. I love how HSB mixes traditional music and modern tones together, how they include history in their music as well. I honestly cannot say which song I love the most... E Holo Kai, Heiau, or After the Storm. 'Heiau' was the song that struck me first... it's just a very powerful song. 'E Holo Kai' is another amazing song... about the journey to Hawaii, probably my all time favorite Hawaiian song. 'After the Storm' is a very touching tribute to the island of Kauai after Hurricane Iniki passed on 09/11/1992. If you love Hawaiian Music, and you want to hear the music at it's finest, with a touch of modern style put in... Hawaiian Style Band's "Rhythm of the Ocean" is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm of the Ocean.......2003-10-16

Having lived in Hawaii 20 years, I can still remember where I was when I first heard Heiau on the radio there several years ago. While the entire album is excellent, the pleasant mix of the modern, youthful island sounds of voice and music, especially with some traditional instruments and a few breaks to ancient chant, is just outstanding. I carry Heiau with me in my portable CD collection, and everyone who hears it for the first time always asks about it. I wish a sample were available here, as I have no doubt about your buying the CD after hearing it. Also, the lyrics to all the songs is in the box, making it more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty goood, a mix of selections.......1999-11-10

I think the CD was good, not just because it had traditional hawaiian music, but it also had music that was a mix of modern pop with hawaiian themes and sounds

5 out of 5 stars The seventies UK hits.......2005-03-14

Born in Trinidad as Leslie Charles, he was raised in Britain from an early age, eventually coming to public attention as Billy Ocean via two UK number two hits and two other UK top twenty hits in the seventies.

Billy's first UK hit, Love really hurts without you, was a catchy, up-tempo soul song that made number two in the UK. The follow-up, LOD Love on delivery, just made the top twenty. Next came Stop me if you've heard it all before, which just missed the top ten. After that came his second number two hit, Red light spells danger.

Billy's career seemed to be blossoming but it was at this point that things went wrong. His record label, GTO, was taken over by a major and although he remained for a few years, he only had two minor UK hits (American hearts, Are you ready) to show for his efforts. He eventually signed with another label, Jive, a move that revived his recording career. Those recordings are outside the scope of this compilation.

I generally like his seventies music best but most people remember him for his eighties music, which I also enjoy. If you enjoy seventies soul music, you will probably enjoy this collection.

Album Description

OCEAN, singer-songwriter-producer, has infused the magical feel of the seven seas into MERMAID MUSIC, her first international cd release. Her hypnotic vocals and raps drift mesmerizingly aloft the hard funk of danceable rhythms, while the accents of other cultures take the forms of Turco-Arabic melodic and rhythmic influences, and her dreamy lyrics create a beautiful spell through the multi-ranged vocals of this truly gifted solo artist.
