Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This quartet consists of cellist-arranger Jacques Morelenbaum, who played with Antonio Carlos Jobim on one of his last recordings, Passarim, before Jobim's death in 1994; his wife, vocalist Paula; Jobim's son, pianist Daniel; and his grandson Paulo on guitar. On this CD not only do they extend Jobim's legacy into the 21st century, but in this chamber format they highlight the softer side of Jobim's bossa nova blend of the Afro-Brazilian samba, jazz, and the French impressionist harmonies of Ravel and Debussy. Augmented by bass, drums, and percussion, the quartet delivers engaging and ethereal renditions of classic Jobim mid-'60s bossa nova standards including "Agua de Beber," "Ela e' Carioca," "Meditacão," and "Desafinado," sung by Paulo. The haunting "A Felicidade" and "Lamento no Morro" from Jobim's Academy Award-winning soundtrack to Black Orpheus are updated with taste and verve, especially in the balance between voice and instrumentation. Paulo Jobim's "Mantiqueira Range" is a direct descendant of his grandfather's harmonic genius, and it may prove to be an example of pleasant things to come from this stunning group. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Rhythm Magazine
The music of Antonio Carlos Jobim has been inherited by his family, and it is in very good hands. On this beautiful recording, Jobim's guitarist son Paulo and his pianist grandson Daniel-both singers as well-are joined by the husband and wife team of Jacques and Paula Morelenbaum, on cello and vocals, respectively. The Morelenbaums, like the Jobims, were members of the legendary composer's later groups, and it shows. This CD recalls the glory days of bossa nova with its sensitive, gently compelling renditions of Jobim classics and lesser-known gems, in performances that are both faithful to the spirit of the original versions and distinctive in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Treatment.......2004-04-18

Whether it's with Gismonti, Veloso or Sakamoto, Jaques Morelenbaum has always delivered profound performances. This is recording is no different. The only thing that makes it surpass his normal high standard is that these songs were gems from the master himself : Jobim.

A must have for those who want to know what great music is.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer heaven.......2004-04-12

Anyone with the slightest interest in Brazilian music should own this CD. It's dreamy and intense at the same time... the music is so compelling that it demands your full attention, no matter how many times you listen to it. A rare achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2007-01-28

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, because I've grown up listening to the old João Gilberto & Stan Getz versions of Tom Jobim's songs, but there are a few recordings on this CD that I like even BETTER than the originals! In particular the versions of Agua de Beber and Aguas de Março are spectacular. Anyone who likes Bossa Nova will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars FITTING TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GREAT ANTONIO.......2006-11-04

WHAT CAN I SAY???!!! I think the title of my review says it all. I have listened to many Jobim tribute albums from Eliane Elias, Manfredo Fest, Rosa Pasos and Ivan Lins, etc. ALL OF THEM DIFFERENT AND GREAT INTREPRETATIONS OF THE LATE GREAT BRAZILIAN'S WORK. However, the Jobim aficionados will be shortchanging themselves if they don't purchase this CD!! The Jobim family does an outstanding job establishing the relevance of Antonio's bossa nova legacy for the 21st century in this recording. These tasteful/smooth arrangements and performances of Antonio's greatest works are from his son, Daniel, his grandson Paulo on guitar, Paula, his wife on vocals and lets not forget the beautiful sound of Jacques Morelenbaum's cello. Bravo Jobim Morelenbaum!!! Enjoy this recording!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beleza Pura!.......2005-10-19

This is simply the most amazing example of the Bossa Nova sound ever compiled on one CD. An awesome tribute to Jobim, the Quarteto brings more out of these Bossa Nova standards than Jobim himself might have imagined, adding a hip, energetic, soulful lilt to the classics. You can FEEL Jobim's affines giving it all on piano, guitar, and vocals! Buy this CD now and then see them in concert!

5 out of 5 stars Good bossa nova music.......2003-12-18

I was fortunate to find this CD at Borders. It's awesome. If you're into old-school bossa nova, this will whet your appetites because the Quarteto stays true to A.C. Jobim's original flavor, but they make his music sound even more fresh. The vocalists are also good; their voices blend so well together. It's a good purchase!

5 out of 5 stars perfection is right.......2003-10-20

I didn't know that I liked this kind of music but bought the CD after watching the DVD of the film Black Orpheus. I have been almost constantly listening to it since then. The songs are lovely; the musicianship is spirited but flawless. There are so many moments of extreme elegance and charm that listening to it becomes an almost visceral experience. It doesn't matter that I can't understand the lyrics, the feeling in the music easily transcends language. Not a molecule of sound has been misplaced.
