Amazon.com essential recording
Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort, Choir, and Players have made some of the finest Purcell recordings to have appeared since the period-instrument revival began; unfortunately, most of those discs had been out of print for years. Happily, Virgin has reissued some of Parrott's best work on this reasonably priced two-for-one release. The performances aren't just exemplary, they're something of a landmark: in them Parrott pioneered the now-standard practice of using high tenors rather than falsettists on some of Purcell's low-lying "countertenor" parts. (One example is "Sound the trumpet," a duet for "high" and "low" countertenors from Purcell's ode Come, ye sons of art, sung by falsettist Timothy Wilson and high tenor John Mark Ainsley.) Excellent performances of the Funeral Sentences and Funeral Music for Queen Mary are here as well, but the centerpiece of this set is Hail, bright Cecilia!, the longest and most colorful of Purcell's odes in praise of the patron saint of music. There is some serious competition here--Paul McCreesh and Philippe Herreweghe have made superb recordings of this work--but Parrott edges them out. For example, alone among the ode's conductors on record, Parrott interpolates an organ solo amidst all of the text's praise of the organ (an instrument St. Cecilia was thought to have invented); he also provides appealing variety by using 12 different soloists (as Purcell did at the premiere). Those soloists are an impressive lot--they include Emma Kirkby, David Thomas, Paul Elliott and Charles Daniels (gently enchanting in the tenor duet "In vain the am'rous Flute"), and the Hilliard Ensemble's Rogers Covey-Crump, who gives an extraordinary rendition of the famous and fearsomely difficult air "'Tis Nature's Voice." --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Unrivalled recording......uncommon brilliance........2006-11-24
Having said that, this recording is a marvellous one, one of uncommon brilliance I might add. It does not represent a summary of his work and style, even if restricted to just his vocal music, such was the originality and fertility of his invention. But it is revealing of the enormity of his command of music. Why this composer isn't as well-known as Mozart or Bach, or yes even Handel, I will never know.
I assure all that the quality of these recordings is unrivalled. Careful attention is paid to detail, and a first-rate line up of soloists ensures a world-class performance. I give this recording 5 stars out of five, for a stunning example of excellence and high standards.

Krystian Zimerman's brilliant, powerful account makes an extraordinary impression, both in its overall sweep and in its extremely fine resolution of textural detail. The pacing is excellent, the playing electrifyingly virtuosic yet disciplined, the interpretation impassioned yet dry-eyed and impressively controlled. The fugato is taken at an unbelievable clip and rendered with dazzling accuracy and effect. The recording, made in the concert hall of Copenhagen's Tivoli Park in 1990, achieves an outstanding balance between presence and ambience. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
The Liszt B minor played as a fascinating tone poem.......2006-08-30
Liszt invented the orchestral toen poem, and this pianist plays an abstract sonata as if it's full of people and places, shifting pscyhological moods and dreamy fantasy. He's ultra-Romantic in the sense that every shrede of imagination is being extracted before our ears. The fillers, mysterious fragments from the late Liszt, are played just as evocatively.

Contemporary troubador Paul Hillier has been one of the key players behind introducing Arvo Pärt's music to Western audiences, first through recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble and later through his magnificently innovative group Theatre of Voices. I Am the True Vine continues the collaboration by bringing together some truly vintage Pärt compositions from the '90s. Although it exists on disc in a more elaborate version for choir and strings, the 1990 Berlin Mass was originally written for just four solo voices and organ. Pärt later revised the score, returning to that original sonority, which is the version offered here. The consummate preparation of the Theatre of Voices, in which every line is lovingly unfurled, the whole building into a memorable aural sculpture, only heightens a listener's admiration for Pärt's ability to make the seemingly simple profound. We also hear the composer in a more overtly joyful mood than usual in the short first selection, while the title track--a setting of a text from the Gospel of John and one of three world premiere recordings here--is a marvelously organic example of word painting (representing Pärt's choral virtuosity even when it comes to setting English text). --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:

If you're looking for minimalism..........2003-04-03
If you are looking for this type of recording, I would recommend you try Part's instrumental works (apart from those written before '76).
This disc sounds more like neo-rennaisance madrigals and motets. If you are looking for a modern composer doing this type of work, look no further. However, if you are expecting another Fur Alina you will be greatly disappointed.

Brilliant performance, good sound.......2000-09-14
The CD presents various works, from the "Berliner Messe" - a rather advanced arrangement - via some biblical themes in English to nearly folk-style slavic tunes. This variety makes this CD probably a good start for people like me who want to know more about Part's work. The recording is nearly flawless, and the ensembles directed by Paul Hillier do a very good job.

Stunning and powerful.......2006-08-26
This CD is stellar in promulgating such lesser known works of Liszt, which, to me, are monumental and compositionally great. Listening to the Fantasie and Fugue on the Theme of B-A-C-H is sure to send your mind to another strata of contemplation. What's more, is that you're basically hearing the heaviest most storming of Liszt's entire works. I hope Howard's piano survived the assault, but it sounds like the most violent 10 minutes of attacking the piano I could ever imagine. Anyone familiar with the work should know that I don't intend to say it's all bombast and nothing more; quite the contrary. Liszt's unique style was to shape layers of music with the most mind-blowing virtuosity and dramatic embellishment. Honestly, I prefer Michael Ponti's crisp and even *more* violent and faster interpretation found on the Naxos label. Nevertheless, Howard plays with a more organ-like sonority, convincing me that there are lower registers in the piano than I even knew about. This is a masterpiece and must be heard.
The Prelude to the Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen is the only tame "break" from a colossal stream of heavy works, so enjoy the serene counterpoint because the Variations that come later prove to be the most dramatic and powerful augmentations of Bach; not even Busoni or Godowsky compare. Certain intervals in the music float gracefully and linger with quiet contrapuntal ideas, but only to gradually build up to the most explosive and infused Bach I've ever heard: Lisztian grandeur and emotion make Bach ("brook" in german) into Vulkan ("volcano"). And beneath these forte passages and fiery expressions are some of the most subtle and beautiful melodies. Without a doubt, this is the most extreme take on Bach, tempered by a fine articulation of the tranquillity behind the actual music.
The Trois Odes Funebres are some of Liszt's finest piano music and Howard gives some excellent executions here, especially the Triomphe Funebre du Tasse. Although I prefer Philip Thomson's (Naxos pianist) take on the First ode, "Les Morts," Howard is still to be commended for being the first to make it accessible to listeners. "Les Morts" is exquisitely soft music fashioned together with some extremely sensational exclamations in the second half. "La Notte" is the most profoundly haunting of them all, perfectly fitting music to be considered a "funeral ode." Lisztians may, of course, recognize the single repeated theme from the "Il Penseroso" of the Annees de Pelerinage. In between this recognizable theme is a slow and angelic interlude, making this entire work almost identical in structure with Chopin's "Funeral March" from his Piano Sonata No. 2.
"Le Triomphe Funebre du Tasse" is sheer brilliance on Liszt's side. The music exhibits such ranges of emotions; it sounds incredibly original. Romantic passages reminiscent to the Tristan and Isolde love-death scene glide like a ghostly adagio, a prelude to some roaring music of ecstasy and literal "triumph" over death. I believe this is the only recording available on amazon that features these three funeral odes together, so I definitely recommend this CD.
But there is one more piece to praise: the Grosses Konzertsolo. The ubiquitous pianists out there hustling to put the legendary Piano Sonata in B minor on their recording fail to realize there is a Piano Sonata in B minor junior out there. The Grosses Konzertsolo was later arranged by Liszt into the Concerto Pathetique, but it exists here as a wholly original and superlative work. This being the first time I heard it, I was simply stunned. Clara Schumann apparently thought little of it, but there is an astoundingly effective mixture of piano effects and dynamics here which makes for a hell of a ride. Thunderous and poignant, Liszt crafts the music into a giant panorama of emotions. Clashes of octaves and piano chords make my hair stand up, but then all of a sudden there are passages of delicate arpeggios sweeping across the keys like mystical whispers. This is a work of superior musicality; simple but powerful.
Bottom line: This recording is a must have for any Lisztian or pianophile. Anyone who remotely enjoys Romantic period piano or even the 19th and 20th century Bach transcriptions for piano will find a most rewarding experience here. Digest the superb music on this CD. I highly recommend it.

Keeping the standard high.......2005-05-26
My favorites are the Winter Hymn, the Grigorjeva and the Schnittke selections, though the other tracks featured on this disc deserve acclaim just as much, if only for the fact that the choir performs indefatigably throughout! If you are looking for choir music that emulates a variety of moods and never really ceases to be ethereal and relaxing, I highly recommend this CD. And if you have started with Vol. 1 of the series, the purchase of this CD is practically not up for debate.
