This CD give some of Mr Sakamoto's best songs. For those who love 50's and 60's music I would recommend this CD. Of course it's better if you understand Japanese, but not necessary.

I don't know if we're supposed to do this, but I have questions. I'm more interested in the styles of the songs. How do the rest compare to "Sukiyaki"? Are they mostly easy listening, pretty ballads? Rock and roll? A combination? Since he had only one international hit, they can't all be as good, but his voice was so strong, and the accompaniment so up-beat and fun on "Sukiyaki," I wonder if I could fall in love with some of his others, whether they be stereo or mono. I gave it three stars because I couldn't give it five or one, without hearing it! I found a darling photo on the web (Japanorama) of him with his wife and children. What a tragedy, his plane crash! Put his grandchildren through college and buy the CD! : )

The release of this CD appears to be an opportunity for cashing in on the unique and lasting popularity of Kyu's huge UK & US hit "Sukiyaki". His memory and talent do not deserve such an obvious rush to cash in on his lasting popularity. British mobile phone customers can download his hit to their phones, thus this rush out the door of this poor compilation of his long and popular work. Thirteen of the twenty songs on this compilation are in MONO! Though there are a few gems on this CD (albeit in MONO), if you're only looking for a good quality "stereo" rendition of "Sukiyaki", I suggest "Hard to Find 45's on CD, Vol. 7: 60's Classics". The producers of this series have done their homework and deliver exceptional quality recordings. EMI Music is a Capitol Music label and should have taken their time to produce a higher quality product. BEWARE!

Without a doubt...an anointed tribute to an anointed man of God. I can never listen to the song, Look at the Blessings, without crying. Not tears of sadness...but tears of joy...tears of gratitude..."It is a blessing to have a tongue that will move and say, Thank you Jesus! ...Look around you...ain't God a good God. ...we all ought to look around us today and tell the world...Just look at the blessings, can't you see them all around us..." God Bless Willie Banks.......2001-04-07

Willie Banks was truly a gift from Heaven for those of us needing a spiritual anchor in our walk with Christ. I was first introduced to Willie in North Carolina and his Spirit-filled voice caused me to examine my life and the things I did not in accordance with God's Will. While I sinned further and fell short of the glory of God, I have recently rededicated my life to Jesus and I'm so glad my old friend Willie is here to greet me.

Willie Banks is one of the most inspiring gospel legends, that has ever lived. I bought this C D in 1993 and from time to time when im down I listen to Just Look At The Blessings, and Gods Goodness. The words to these songs are truly a blessing. Every word he sings you can truly feel the passion in his voice as they come directly from his heart. He will be truly missed. A must have in your record collection.

I had the cassett and it was very inspiring to me and my family. I lost my cassett when I moved to Washington and I would love to see if it can be replaced with the CD, whenever it becomes available.

I want to put 5 stars, but............2004-03-24

ZARD---now the popularity is a little down, but that is big even now. Esupecially, 1992-95her pupularity was the giggest. Her charming point is her beautiful and sentimental voice and mysterious looking(she have not appeared on TV or other media) and the wonderful music by major composer Tetsurou Oda etc.

I want to put 5 stars to this CD, but the selected musics in this CD is not early works, some of them is late works in her carrer. I think that there are wonderful musics and especially sentimental musics with miner chords in early works. For instance [Makenaide][Mou sukoshi ato sukoshi][Yureru omoi][Dangerouse Tonight][Im my arms tonight]etc. But in amazon site, their early best is not. If you love sentimental sounds like me and want to know truth ZARD's charm, I think that you had better to listen to the early best CD in addtion to this CD.

There are a lot of songs that have beautiful melodies in Japan. The artist that you can feel the deepest is ZARD.
All the her songs have wonderful melodies, in addition to them, vocal Izumi Sakai's words also is woderful. For instance when translete [Ikimo Dekinai] to English directly, the meanig is [I can not breath], when I think about you I can not breath, that is, I love you very much. One of Japanese beauty is the metaphor. In English, for instance[I can not look at you=I love you] is metaphor, isn't it? The wondeful explanation hidden Japanese beauty exist in her songs. They is also wonderful things of ZARD.

Please feel such Japanese beautiful melodies in this CD.

One of the greatest Albums ever!!!.......2002-03-06

If you dont know Zard let me say you first: Its time for it!!!
Anyone who loves good music with so beautiful and sometimes poetic lyrics should know this group. If you dont speak japanese just listen, its like heaven and i'm sure you'll find a translation of the lyrics on the web. Izumi Sakai, the mainwriter of the group is one of the best songwriters on earth.
I'm not sure if you like this music, but if you know one song and you like it, the other songs are even better. And if you know no song but just want to try something new, try this.
On this CD are the best Singles collected from all of their albums ( 15 or 16 Albums !!!). Only "In my arms tonight" is missing. But if you like this one you maybe you buy "Cruising & Live", there you can hear "In my arms tonight".
This album is really one of the greatest albums!!!

An Excellent Sampler, and the Best Place to Start.......2006-01-24

If you're unfamiliar with Nyman and want a broad overview of his best work, I'd start here. I actually WORE OUT a copy of this and recently bought another. When it arrived, I played it over and over-- Nyman's almost creepily insistent and precise compositions will appeal to those who appreciate minimalism and repetition in the music of other composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, and Philip Glass.

Michael Nyman RULES !.......2004-07-22

I thought there was nothing beyond Philip Glass, Steve Reich or John Adams. Suddenly, for some strange reason I bought this CD. It far exceeded my expectations.

Nyman is a excelent composer, his music is fast-paced, joyful and delicious.

I recomend this CD for anyone who is looking for a great minimalist composer.

Sensations mosaic.......2004-03-31

Today I was talking with a friend about the rainbow of feelings "Memorial" awakes in my mind. I consider this song like the exact opposite of easy-listening music, a feeling catalyst, a vehicle that can raise you to the sky and gradually take you to the deepest level in hell. As derrotista said, it is perfect to describe the meaning of a word like "death", but more than that, with an inevitability emphasis.

The rest of the compilation also honors the meaning of intensity. No one song in this disc will let your attention go away from the sensations mosaic this record constructs. Highly recommended.

Good start to meet Nyman.......2004-03-05

I was a great enthusiast of new age and minimalist music in the early 90's, when I was still a teenager. I had this as one of my favourite albums and today I consider it one of my best purchases.

Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.

Of course, my favourite is "Memorial". It is the most tragic music I have ever listened. It's a perfect track to describe what a word like "death" can mean. "Miserere Paraphrase" is the definition of another simple word: "pain".

Some other tracks are the purity of minimalism: "Knowing the Ropes", "Chasing Sheep is best left to Shepherds", "Wheelbarrow Walk" and "The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room" are of my favourites.

Why am I not giving it five stars? The reason: "Prospero's Books: Miranda". It is a bad way to end this album. Almost the whole album is devoted to Greenaway films: "The Draughtsman Contract", "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", "A Zed and Two Noughts" and "Drowning by Numbers" and the referred "Prospero's Books". The only track not belonging to a film is Stroking-Synchronising, from "Water Dances" album. This is a tremendous composition and should be the great finale for this album. "Miranda" is a dull and not creative composition, which Nyman doesn't have to be proud of it: it is too complex, too changing and breaks with the minimalist spirit. I also think the soprano and the mezzo don't play a "serious" part.

But of course, it has an honour place in my discography.

The Emperor's New Music.......2002-04-11

A lot of people seem to love this guy and I just don't see why. I find it dull, intellectual (in the most pejorative sense) and defines what's wrong with a lot of "post-modernism" in music today. This guy doesn't write tunes as much as he writes concepts of tunes. The music fails to connect on an emotional level and fails to be interesting enough in purely intellectual terms to compensate for it's emotional hollowness. His craft seems a bit lacking too- filled with the trappings of minimalism without the basic musical values such as memorable melodies, logical harmony and innovative form that make a composer such as John Adams worth listening to. His often odd choices of orchestration tend to strike one as merely grotesque rather than imaginative. I'm afraid that Michael Nyman is a musical poseur and it's a shame that so many people have bought into his brand of soulless artifice.
Not recommended.
