this is a very great beatles album undoubtedly. A masterwork in many ways... it has gone into the history of western culture as a revolutionary album defining the times,the feelings, and ramifications of cultures in crossroads of expressionism, vulnerability, and abandonment. Most of the songs float into each other with different colors, moods, statements, and imageries, a rarely achieved feat even by the fab four...the song structures are complex, with impeccable musicianship, lyrical brilliance, and great singing(as always!). The only oddball song on the album and yet a great relief from the deep moodiness of the album is John's 'goodmorning, goodmorning' which kind of heralds the calm before the eventual storm: 'a day in the life'(which follows the conclusion portion of the theme song...) 'A Day in the life' is the type of masterpiece that most artists spend a a lifetime trying to emulate, parallel, and equal but just can not...as amply evidenced after decades passed... Only these four artists in time could have achieved this musical zenith... A work of art that defies definition... Harrison's 'within you without you' is east-meets-west at its deepest, a profoundly philosophical song indeed... 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' is another diamond on the album amidst so many... there is little or no weakness in this album which is uniformly great and each song insertion was after mammoth thinking and contemplation though the beatles always underestimated this aspect of their album making...it didn't just become a multi-concept masterwork by chance! it was made with great labor, imagination, dedictaion, belief and of course genius... A love's labor never lost in this case...

The most amazing thing about this Beatle record was/is that it transcends the musical experience. Keep in mind that in 1967, there was no MTV or VH1. When this record was playing your imagination went wild! It was like your own personal movie in your head. It starts like being at the theatre and then you go everywhere imagineable... sitting on a sofa with meter maid, inside the home of well meaning parents, going to the freak show circus, attending a church-like service with sitar, dreaming of growing old with the one you love, sitting in a high school class p*ssed off at the world, overcoming dysfunctional relations, riding in a boat, witnessing an accident, watching a fox hunt, reading a book, WOW. And everyone saw it there own personal way, no two imaginations are alike. The Beatles took you to a magical place within your own being with this record. I am grateful that there was no video to ruin it! BRAVO Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Day in the Life is a masterpiece.

Sgt. Pepper deserves to be considered one of the greatest achievements in popular music. This issue is good quality and includes a nice booklet that explains the album - including a diagram of who's who on the cover picture.

Is this the greatest album ever? It probably is in terms of influence, from packaging and marketing, to the very notion that a rock or pop music album really matters. In terms of its musical merit, one can easily make the case that Pepper has been overhyped - and its shortcomings are all the more glaring in light of the album's cannonical status in modern culture. This record has suffered from its own success - and after forty years - its conceivable that it now represents something of a let-down. After all, no recording could possibly meet the expectations that this album carries.
This album should be approached for what it is, a very solid album by a talented musical group (that only happens to be my favorite band - and maybe the favored band of quite a few others). The strongest points of the album are its opening tracks and closing tracks - which form a medley of sorts and further the illusion of conceptual unity. Many (Lennon included) have derided the idea that this album is truly a concept album - and it certainly is not one in the sense that the Who's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are. The concept is more fundamental - that this disc contains a set of pop/rock songs that have been thoughtfully arranged together for all time - and not packaged at random to meet immediate market demand. In a way, with Napster and I-Tunes, the great age of the album that began with Sgt. Pepper, "Pet Sounds," and other 1966/1967 releases has come to an end in this decade, and this has made it it even more difficult to grasp what the fuss was truly all about. But if one wished to make a short Beatles playlist on their I-pod that captured the overall personality of the group, as well as having a representative effort for each of its four members, and a good mix of rock, pop, and experimental numbers - Sgt. Pepper would be an ideal playlist.

One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

Up until this point I have liked what the chemical brothers have done. Each album went out and did something different. However, with this album, if you can even call it that, it's like they went into the studio for 5 minutes, pushed some buttons and said "that sounds good enough". This album has got to be one of the laziest outings ever by CB. It doesn't even sound like them half the time, it's like some 10 year old made an album and they just put their name on it. I miss the days of Surrender where every song was awesome. With this album though, I can't stop thinking that even I could've made something better with my $100 midi keyboard. The tracks are about as minimal as you can get. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come. In any case, fan or not, I would suggest saving your money with this one. It's lazy, has sloppy production, and is just overall confused on what it is trying to convey.

I own every studio album by the CB, but I regret to say I will not be buying this one. Saturate and Modern Midnight conversation are decent, but the rest sound like Gorillaz B tracks. Looking forward to the next album.

I love the Chemical Brothers. As an electronic musician and dj, the Chems are my favorite artist and my biggest influence.

My favorite work of theirs is actually their DJ mix, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out." Just awesome.

I didn't really like their last album, "Push the Button." I thought it was just ok. I didn't play any of the songs of that album in my dj sets,(although I did play "Rise Up" which was actually a b-side to "Galvanize.")

I've never loved any of their albums though. I've just thought that certain songs on their albums were mind blowing. The albums usually don't have a very danceable flow to them.

This one does.

This album is the first Chemical Brothers album that I can listen to from beginning to end. There was only one song I thought was slightly mediocre (Das Spiegel).

"Do It Again" makes a ton more sense now that I've heard it within the context of the album. The sung vocals were questionable to me, but after hearing the album, I think it's brilliant.

And, for the record, I think the "Salmon Dance" is wicked dancefloor material. The funkiest Chemical Brothers track ever.

This album is a bit less in your face then the earlier stuff, but it is quite relevant to the current state of electronic music. It draws influences from the minimal house/berlin techno and nu-rave scene but transcend all of that. They really make some odd-ball decisions and push songs in really strange directions, all the while keeping their familiar sound pallette.

If you want the old (and still great) block rockin' Chemical Brothers, then this is probably not the album for you. But if you want to hear cutting edge dance music, this is it.

Currently my favorite electronic music album. Period.

There are not so many bands in the musical panorama which, after releasing a singles' collection of a decade of existence, have made out 2 great new albums just after it. As many do, I really enjoy "Push the Button" but for me this album is almost capable of matching with it... and I must confess I was not expecting that. Yes, songs like "We Are the Night", "Das Spiegel" or "Burst Generator" are the night! Go for it fans, the formula is as good as ever.

One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. The first time I heard SexyBack I thought Justin's new album would be filled with lots of great new tracks, and as always he'd take a different direction in Pop to sound fresh and hip.

He kind of tried to do that, but if you got just one and only main producer (Timbaland) you get one and only result: All the songs sound exactly the same. The dance songs have pretty much no difference between them, the lyrics quality is worst than his previous album, and though some songs sound refreshing, the rest of them are disposable. This album is filled with 5 good songs and the rest is nothing more than fillers.

This is sad considering that he is pretty much the dominating alfa male in Pop right now. But it's not as good as his previous album. Some mention some Prince like style, but Justin is far far away from sounding like any Prince album, he's got the ideas, a great Producer (Timbaland), but he needs a little bit more of different ideas. Not just the same idea for all the songs in an album.

This is kind of the same for Justin as Bad was for Michael Jackson, lots of keyboards, lots of beatboxing, and lots of dance songs, but just like 'Bad', it wasn't half as good as 'Thriller'. Sad story.

This is exactly the sort of thing that should be played on headphones in the dentist's chair, just to remind us that there are things more unpleasant than a root canal. What a dreadful, boring piece of work this is. My question to the production team; were there any actual musicians in the recording process or was everything electronic samples of the worst of the synthesized '80s? [...]. Keep repeating that to yourself with the same regularity as the middle school lyrics on this recording and perhaps eventually you will come to realize that this IS NOT MUSIC, in fact this may actually be ANTI-MUSIC. If this is the future of music then we have sold our souls to Madison Avenue Moguls. This recording is so bad on so many levels that I can't even begin to review it with any kind of objectivity. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

I bought this CD mainly for the Sexyback song and thought the other songs on the CD would have a similar beat/feel to them. I was unpleasantly surprised to find that I really only like 3 songs on the entire CD. Many of them do not sound at all like Sexyback, some of them do not even sound like Justin Timberlake, and some sound like rap-type music. It's okay - but if you are expecting a similar sound/feel for the songs, it is not there.

Yes, JT is hot, but so is his music! Almost every single track in this album can be released as a single. To think that I actually hated "SexyBack" when I first heard it.

I must say that I was very surprised that the whole CD was unbelievable... not just tracks Sexy Back and What Goes Around that is now being played in most radio stations. Every song was amazing, with great lyrics and jammin' beats. It just underlines and reiterates the incredible artistic tales of this dude. I will say that this is my first CD from him as I have bought only single tracks in the past - and definitely will not be the last. Thanks Justin, for a totally kickin' and rockin' album. LOOOOOOOVE it. Definitely blasting this on the way to Vegas!

Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce

First, I think Pink just has a raw power to her voice that so many of the other pop starts don't have. Second, she sets herself apart by having tracks with relevant topic, a couple of ballards and then tunes you can dance too. Lasly, she deserves at least music award nominations.

LOVE HER! Tracks 7 8 and 9 are continually played in my car. I love the whole album including the song with her dad (no credit though, why not?). She's real, shares a lot in her lyrics, and real artists are hard to come by these days.

I never was a fan of hip hop/dance/rap music, so I never really paid attention to Pink. I'll be the first to admit that was a big mistake. I heard "Who Knew" on the radio and was absolutely bowled over! I immediately went out and bought the album based on that one song. Turns out the album is full of fantastic musical gems. I didn't realize she changed her style to more of a rock/pop style. "Stupid Girls" is a great social statement (and totally made me think of Paris Hilton). "Who Knew" is one of my favorite songs of all times. "Long Way to Happy" is so catchy and awesome, it's my 2nd fave on the album. "Nobody Knows", "Dear Mr. President" and "I Got Money Now" are all great slowed down songs. I almost cried the first time I heard "Dear Mr. President". Extremely political and so very true, beautifully sung and deserves a lot of attention. "U + Ur Hand" and "Leave me Alone" are fun and full of attitude.

I'd like to add that not only is this album awesome, but I finally found out that Pink is an incredible vocalist and performer. Based on that, I ended up buying Misunduztood and there are several songs on that album I loved as well. I just wish I had noticed Pink long before this! Buy the album, you won't be disappointed!

There's nothing like a Gwen Stefani disc to rip you from your pop comfort zone and, in the pleasantest way possible, knock you around a bit. On The Sweet Escape, the blows arrive roughly every four minutes: a yodel ("Wind It Up") skitters off ceremoniously before the title track, featuring Akon, catches you off guard with its infectious yelps of "Woo-hoo, YEE-hoo!," and the pouty rap of "Orange County Girl" has barely petered out before we're vectored somewhere back toward the '80s with the indie rock-ish "Early Winter." That the sound of these songs doesn't follow a formula--that they pounce wherever they please, without regard for genres or decades--is no big whoop; this is Gwen Stefani, after all, and her up-for-anything, play-along fans probably wouldn't have it any other way. More surprising is the extent to which Stefani inserts what seems to be her genuine self into the music: "4 in the Morning," a Madonna-reminiscent midtempo groover, drops the wide-eyed Betty Boop pose and basks in a rarely plumbed depth of feeling ("I give you everything that I am / I'm handing over everything that I've got / 'cause I wanna have a really true love," she sings with something like sincerity). A single track later, she's owning up to motherhood in the sexiest, most unapologetic way possible: "I know you've been waiting," she pants, "but I've been off making babies / And like a chef making donuts and pastries / It's time to make you sweat." Lyrics don't get much cleverer than the ones to "Breakin' Up," a kiss-off disguised as a dropped cell phone call, and sounds don't get much swizzier than the ones on "Now That You Got It." Which is to say that Gwen's got game--as much as on Love.Angel.Music.Baby, if not more--and that anytime she's prepared to hollaback, the world will do well to listen. --Tammy La Gorce

Some people are close minded, they wont give this album 1 chance because they miss No Doubt..dont get me wrong I LOVE No Doubt...but Gwen is doing her thing now,and I respect that..this album is really interesting and cool..some of my favorites songs here are 4 In the morning,Now That You Got It,Wonderful Life,Flourescent and many others, Gwen likes doing this music, and i love listening..so Keep em comin'!!!so some people need to get over themselves

I love this album. Every now and then, I find a top40 album worth buying. The singing is creative. The beats infectuous. 'Sweet Escape' is pure ear candy. Anyone buying the album expecting No Doubt will be disappointed, but it holds up on it's own.

Currently, it's in the CD changer and will remain there for awhile. If I were blind, I'd still love Gwen's music. Thank Heavens I can see. Gwen looks like someone who'd be fun to Kiss.

much better album than lamb, imo. More sythenic and current, more confident. She doesn't seem as nervous and unsure of herself on this one. Of course this isn't in the same league as her stuff with no doubt. Don't even bother if you want another return of saturn, but you should have learned that the first time around. This is supposed to be a fun, guilty pleasure.

Of course it does come across as a bit calculating and jerky. It has plenty of variety. It's just fun, dumb pop music. Excellently done dumb pop music. And it sure beats Fergie.

I don't think that this Album is better than L.A.M.B, but I still think that it is good. I am a little disipointed that the songs don't sound like the 80's and 90's like L.A.M.B did. I think that guy named ROCKET or wutever who rote about this Ablum is STUPID!!!! With a capital S. Wonderful life is not the only good song on the Album! There si Early Winter, 4 in the morning, Yummy, Flourescent, and more! And what does that guy mean that Gwen lost all of her fans 21 and up? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! My teacher (27) loves Gwen? so does my sister (25) my mom (43) and eaven our nabor (50)! I mean come on! All in All this is a great Album that you will love

Björk's main asset as a musician is her fearlessness. Since the end of The Sugarcubes and the pop-dance of Debut, she has released progressively more experimental records. But after well over a decade of going further and further out, Volta steps back. Make no mistake; this is Björk, and so it's still fabulously weird. Like 2004's mesmerizing Medúlla and the 2005 soundtrack for Drawing Restraint 9, the songs are blissfully peculiar, with narratives about love, offspring, aliens...you name it. Yet melodically and philosophically, Volta recycles more than it innovates; the driving pulse of "Declare Independence," for instance, reminds us of Homogenic's "Pluto," and the lead single "Earth Intruders" sounds like Post's "Army of Me" on steroids. And just as Medúlla oriented itself around a certain instrument--the human voice--this one concentrates on horns.

Still, the transition between her early work and the avant-garde bender she's been on since Vespertine is pretty harrowing, and it's satisfying to hear Björk revisit her more accessible self. Uber-producer Timbaland pitches in here and there, most successfully on "Innocence," which uses a fat, disjointed pulse to drive the euphoric vocals forward. Elsewhere, the hyperactive sitar sample on "I See Who You Are" provides texture for the song's theme of enjoying each other while there's still "flesh on our bones." And "Pneumonia" makes fantastic use of the horn section with a soft arrangement that compliments the song's lyrical melody.

So while it's a bit of a stall, Volta is a lovely pause. It reminds us how much we appreciate the laboratory of Björk's imagination, but also how much we missed her back when she was just goofing around. -Matthew Cooke

Volta, the sixth studio album from Icelandic musician, Bjork, delivers the kind of offbeat, quirky music that only she could make. With its lo-fi sonics, Volta sounds less polished than some of Bjork's previous releases, which is refreshing. This record is an eclectic mixture of sounds, with performances by everyone from Timbaland (is there an album he isn't involved with right now?) to Chinese pipa player Min Xiao-Fen and a ten-piece, all female Icelandic brass section.

Adding to the unusual sound is the reoccurring nautical theme on the album, with its foghorn interludes mixed with seagull noises and the sound of boats. Bjork's distinctive vocals tell a story that's both personal and political, singing about her children, feminism and the current global climate. My favorite track on this record is "Declare Independence," an anarchistic track that inspires us to "Start your own currency/Make your own stamp/Protect your language." Overall, this funky record makes for an interesting listen, although it might be a bit hard to get through if you're not a die-hard Bjork fan.

This is not Bjork's best stand-alone album, but fits well into the evolution of her music that has spanned the last decade. Some songs seem improvised, using melodies and vocal techniques from previous albums, and fall short of the usual level of innovation Bjork seems to strive for. However, there are very beautiful moments ("Dull Flame of Desire," "I See Who You Are") as well as high energy tracks ("Declare Independence," "Innocence," "Earth Intruders") that make the album more dynamic and satisfying with each listen. There's not a lot of "new" Bjork sound here, but the old has been recycled into a refreshing ensemble of danceable beats and moving melodies.

I was close to giving up on BJork. I was a die-hard fan of her work until Vespertine but Medulla and her latest movie soundtrack just turned off my interest: they were both TOO experimental for what I was willing to put up with -they almost became a musical torture of sorts.

Enter "Volta" in 2007. Though Bjork is still considered a wacko by many (not that she's a typical artist by any stretch of the mind, but...) in this album, in spite of a handful of musical "departures", for the most part she goes back to her roots. There's a lot of material in here reminiscent of her sound back from Debut, Post and Homogenic times.

While my favorite song is "Wanderlust" without a doubt, with upbeat tracks ("Earth Intruders") and quiet tracks ("Pneumonia" and "My Juvenile") across the album, for the first time in a while, consciously or not, Bjork doesn't seem to want to leave anybody out. For the first time in a while, I feel like listening to her music... again.

Fearlessly following her own muse, Bjork creates an interesting album full of full throated singing, funky beats and noise, and interesting textures. While I don't like a couple of tunes (Dull Flame of Desire and Declare Independence), the rest of the album is engaging and evocative and works well as an album, linked by noises, segues, brass sounds, and beats. Her best album in a few years. Four/Four-and-a-half stars.

It's not that I'm literally confused by the songs on this album. Rather, I am a bit confused with Bjorks decision to put out this album. Nothing this artist would produce could ever be bad, it's just not as good/creative as some of her other albums in the past. Bjork is one of my favorite artists - this album is not one of my favorite Bjork albums. It lacks the feeling and intensity of some of her past work for me. The artwork, though, is beautiful.

Angelique Kidjo has four Grammy nominations, a mantel-full of international awards, several dance hits, and notable appearances on film and TV soundtracks to her credit (to say nothing of being a major style icon and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador). So this Benin-born, New York-based singer-composer has long since gotten past having to prove anything to anybody--other than to herself. With DJIN DJIN (pronounced "gin gin"), Angelique Kidjo returns to the soul of Benin - and, for the first time, shares it with a cast of all-star guests, in a marriage of cultures that has significance far beyond music alone. Inspired by the traditions and culture of Kidjo's native Benin in West Africa, the title of the album refers to the sound of the bell that greets the beginning of a new day for Africa.

The diversity represented by Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, Branford Marsalis, producer Tony Visconti, and the others who contribute to DJIN DJIN speaks to the lesson of this project: For all the differences in the music of our time, the river of Africa flows through it all.

The key was to build DJIN DJIN on a Beninese foundation. The heartbeat, then, comes from percussionists Crespin Kpitiki and Benoit Avihoue, both members of Benin's Gangbé Brass Band. Details of their country's rhythmic heritage, specific in some cases to individual villages, feed the rhythms they lay down throughout the album.

To this mix Kidjo welcomes players whose backgrounds complement the idea of DJIN DJIN: drummer Poogie Bell, known for his work with Erykah Badu and Chaka Khan; funk keyboard wizard Amp Fiddler, whose credits include Prince and George Clinton; Larry Campbell, whose multi-instrumental work has adorned the music of Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Paul Simon; Senegalese bass giant Habib Faye, a fixture with Youssou N'Dour; guitarists Lionel Loueke, from jazz legend Herbie Hancock's band; Romero Lubambo, a Brazilian wonder whose credits include Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves; Joao Mota, from Guinea-Bissau and kora master Mamadou Diabate.

Compared to all her previous releases this is sad. Presumably by duetting with 'name' stars she's trying to break into the American market. All of her native Benin funk and energy has been diluted. Angelique Kidjoe and Josh Groban? No No No. I listened to it three times in case certain tracks improved with repeated listening. Not. I'll give her another chance with her next release but hope that if she decides to hook up with others they are a bit more adventurous. Natacha Atlas if you're listening this is not the way to go.

Angelique Kidjo's amazing whether she's covering Hendrix in "VooDoo Child" or singing West African tunes. Her roots are much wider than just her country of origin. It'd be hard for me to name a favorite among these gems. I love the people she's selected to work with. "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone may be the kind of duet that's going to propel her right up to the top of the charts where she belongs. Smart move, lady, for sure, but I also love the songs where Angelique sings her own music alone.

Angelique Kidjo is one of those rare artists who has the Midas touch. No matter who she's performing with, no matter what she's performing, she makes beautiful music. While "Djin Djin" can be considered one of her more mainstream albums, she still proudly shows her African roots. In a sense,it's not surprising it's sold alongside coffee at Starbucks; "Djin Djin" is as potent as a cup of steaming java.

The opening "Ae Ae" is anthemic;it's a power ballad in which Kidjo calls on her fellow Africans to be self-sufficient. The title track is a jazzy collaboration with Alicia Keys and Branford Marsalis. It's Benin meets the Big Easy. Kidjo does an amazing cover of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone. The '60s British Invasion gets an African makeover,transforming it into a tribal rave-up. Kidjo and smoky-voiced Peter Gabriel complement each other in "Salala." A thumb piano gives "Senamou" a deeply African flavor. "Sedjedo", a duet with reggae heir Ziggy Marley, doesn't quite work. Marley is relegated to the sidelines. However, Kidjo's rousing singing saves the piece. The same goes for "Pearls." Josh Groban's operatic voice is unsuited to the style of the song. It's Afropop meets Latin rock (since Carlos Santana plays the guitar),not the Three Tenors or Il Divo. Kidjo's amazing singing again saves the song from becoming a novelty song. In "Papa","Arouna","Awan N'La","Emma" and "Mama Golo Papa" Kidjo shows she doesn't need collaborators. She's still going strong since her debut in 1990. She covers difficult issues such as marital conflict and divorce soulfully. Finally, in "Lonlon" Kidjo transforms Ravel's annoying and overplayed "Bolero" into rousing,toe-tapping Afropop. Instead of being filler or a song worth skipping, "Lonlon" serves as a grand finale.

Angelique Kidjo is accomplished,as a person and as an artist. She is a UN Goodwill Ambassador;she has her own charity,Batonga. In Bono's guest-edited issue of "Vanity Fair" about Africa, Harry Belafonte praises her activism. Angelique Kidjo's music is truly angelic. "Djin Djin" is a great introduction to her music, and is a perfect mainstream introduction to African music. It's as rousing and flavorful as a good hot cup of coffee.

This is my first introduction to any of Angelique Kidjo's music. I bought this compact disc for myself as a birthday present based on the reviews it has received and listening to the short musical segments found on Amazon.Com.





After recently listening to "Djin, Djin" on a 4 hour road trip, I feel in love with the music & lyrics! The music is fantastic and varied from song to song.... Angelique Kidjo is phenomenal as an artist. I also enjoyed the musical guests performing on "Djin, Djin" too. This compact disc is perfect as background music while long distance driving, at home relaxing, during dinner parties, etc.

This is a good release, with many guests on it, but not quite as accessable as the Black Ivory Soul CD. However, it will get you up and moving.

The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew Cooke

I am somewhat newer to trance and am still getting accustomed to the lingo.

I read some of the other reviews before I listened to the album. I agree that disc one, "On the Beach", is much more of a mellow trance; and of course, the name of the disc implies this. Most of the tracks are excellent--I just have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this time of trance.

I absolutely loved the second disc, "In the Club". The tracks are out of this world! I was listening to it during my boring commute and was loving it. Track 12 flipped on, and all of a sudden, the whole album just seemed a hundred times better to me. Tracks 12 through 16 make up my personal favorite trance mix I've ever been exposed to out of all of my favorite DJ's--Tiesto, Buuren, PVD, and Micro. This made me feel 100% secure in giving the entire album five stars!

I have been an ardent Armin fan for years. ASOT 2007....brilliant work. I saw Armin live a few weeks before I got this. The track "firefly" will always take me back to his performance. The crowd was chanting ARMIN ARMIN ARMIN as he had a huge beaming smile on his face. And I got his autograph. So I am in love with him for sure!

On a serious note, I have listened to this set a zillion times. You will want to also if you buy this. Love it.

I feel compelled to add this paragraph to my original review, for we have a troll (who obviously hates Armin Van Buuren) going through these reviews and saying that they are not helpful. You will notice that 8 negative votes were given to many of the reviews. Do not for one minute pay any attention to those negative votes (I believe one person is casting these votes), for "A State of Trance 2007" is everything the positive reviewers are saying it is.

I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of my fellow-reviewers who stated that this is Armin's best release yet. "A State of Trance 2006" was also very good, but Armin outdid himself this time.

I won't repeat the comments of former reviews, but I would add that I was surprised that no one referred (when pointing out their favorite tracks) to the amazing club hit "I Am" by Markus Schulz vs. Chakaa. I found it to be absolutely phenomenal and IMHO that track, not "Evergreen," marks the transition between the first and second half of CD2.

There was one track on CD1 that I didn't care for ("Wouldn't Change a Thing"); the vocals just didn't appeal to me. And on CD2 I considered tracks 6 & 7 ("Perspective" & "The Space We Are") to be fillers. Am I complaining? Far from it, for the other 25 tracks were sweet to the ear and will bring any trance fan (especially those who love vocal, melodic, and high energy trance) to a state of audio nirvana.

I believe this is, by far, the best 2 CD set released this year. But I have ordered the much-anticipated "Nightmusic, Vol. 2" by Thrillseekers, and if that release equals or surpasses Nightmusic, Vol. 1, it will give Armin some tough competition.

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

I have had this album a number of years, and my enthusiasm is not quite as great as many of the viewers here, because although it is generally pleasant listening, I don't think there are really any outstanding tracks or personal favorites on here.

I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

Ry Cooder did a good thing reassembling these wonderfully talented and forgotten stars of another period. Great album, wish it was a double, triple, a collection. I would buy it. Can't replace these icons of another era and their sound will be gone with them.

All done in Spainish, this excellent CD has a book included with translations and facts about the players. The music here oozes with atmosphere, taking you to the heart of Cuba. First rate musicianship and great songs all the way through. Ry leaves the vocals to various others, but his guitar work is unmistakably present. A good veiw indeed!

For those of you who are fans of the Buena Vista Social Club already, this is the masterpiece. A culmination of talented musicians, soul, love, and sultry afternoons with a cool drink getting ready to kick on into the night!

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.

The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".

The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.

The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

Michael Fletcher reviewed this CD spot-on. And I concur with the review that it is magical--it is indeed that. I can listen to it over and over at work or at home! It seems to suit almost any mood and simply nourishes the soul. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys good music--you don't even need to be a fan of Cuban music. I certainly am not well versed in Latin music, but am a definite fan of this album!

Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number "D.A.N.C.E." in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It's ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it's †. This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor the Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to "Waters of Nazareth," it's very difficult to avoid wondering "how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully" while also dancing furiously. --Mike McGonigal

Rarely does a European DJ/dance album hit the U.S. with as full a head of steam as this one, but after the twin jabs of the singles "Never Be Alone" and "Waters of Nazareth," French duo Justice was poised and ready to follow with Cross. As a strong contender for the dance album of 2007, this 12-track debut shows Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé flexing more musical elasticity than the "dance" or "house" tags can possibly convey on their own, never mind the "French Touch" movement with which the pair is loosely and rather reductively associated. Having remixed tracks from artists as dissimilar as Britney Spears and Franz Ferdinand, the pair seems to have been building its chops for exactly this kind of resolutely defiant masterwork. From the relentless, gritty electro-bounce of opener "Genesis" and the stuttering, four-on-the-floor propulsion of "Let There Be Light," to the children's chorus of "D.A.N.C.E." and the rock-indebted "DVNO," Cross starts with a palette of house and disco beats and then throws the kitchen sink at it. When I first saw the D.A.N.C.E. music video on DailyMotion I couldn't wait to get my hands on this album. The song just made me want to get up and dance. As soon as I got the disk I started listening to it on my good headphones as to not loose any of the quality but immediately was bothered by the over production of this album. Distortion got in the way of the clean beats and made me worry my headphones were shorting out. Similar techniques were used throughout and although the songs very in speed and tone the beat and craft can be repetitive. I decided to give the album a chance and listened to it more. It did grow om me. Still it is a bit of a disappointment.

I got this CD on the strength of "D.A.N.C.E." which to me, sounds like a 70s children's show has dipped it's chocolate into Jamiroquai's peanut butter (That's a compliment and a half as I think Jamiroquai's the bestest band evah!) Never heard any of Justice's other stuff. Played the CD all the way through and the songs that immediately caught me, in addition to "D.A.N.C.E.", are "DVNO" and "Phantom Pt. II" When I first heard "D.A.N.C.E.", I thought I'd found my new Bassment Jaxx. Nope. I can sit and listen to a Jaxx CD all the way through and love it all. Unfortunately, not so with this CD as of this writing. I'll give it another listen this weekend. While I can't help but compare Justice to the Jaxx, here's another comparison. With a Jaxx CD, not all of the songs sound so much alike a some of their songs sound like they could be from different albums and different artists. I can sum Cross up in one sentence: Optimus Prime with gas. I was going to give this CD three stars. But because they're French and because "D.A.N.C.E." is a banger, I'll give it four.

This music has been done better by other people. I admit they assembled things a little differently, with a harder sound, but I don't hear the layers and depth of production that I've heard on other leading albums in this genre. Maybe you have to experience it live.

This album is very good with that French electro sound. If you like Daft Punk and parties, you might like this album. The opening notes say it all.

The rest of the tracks are all good, except 'The Party'. This track (featuring Uffie) is terrible because she has no talent and basically sing-talks over a quiet Justice track. Either a) the Justice guys mistakenly convinced themselves she's good or b) there was pressure from the record label to put her on a track (Uffie and Justice are both on Ed Banger records).

I can't even begin to see how they equate Justice with Daft Punk!! This isn't techno and it's certainly not rock or punk. It's noise, alright? It's Chemical Brothers if the Chemical Brothers had no rhythm... or an insanely short attention span. When I listen to Techno or Dance music, I need some kind of element to tie it all together... to facilitate the musical journey, if you will... a beat. Justice keeps throwing in different shrill sounds and... Hell, they make Ministry and the whole Industrial movement sound almost classical. Sorry guys, but I don't get it. Justice sounds to me like bad noise. The only decent track there contains a sample from an Italian dance song.

J'suis desole les mecs, but when you compare Justice to others often lumped into contemporary "French sound": Air, Daft Punk, Kid Loco, and many others... these guys leave lots to be desired.
