Amazon.com's Best of 1998
One of the most fascinating world music albums of 1998 is by a group that, until success struck, did not really exist. Radio Tarifa are named after a fictitious radio station and play music that sounds indigenous to Iberia but is actually a remarkably organic hybrid of modern styles and ancient traditions. Temporal is a delightful, provocative surprise. Think border music for a borderless world. --Fernando Gonzalez

With Mediterranean instruments like the oud, derbuka and ney, Radio Tarifa collapses recognizably Arabic sounds with flamenco rhythms, playing with a flair reminiscent of a traditional Balkan wedding band. (The Spanish ensemble also tackles a 16th-century Sephardic tune and a 12th-century French procession.) Central to Radio Tarifa's charm is the rough-edged voice of Benjamin Escoriza, whose throaty elocution makes his Spanish a terrific blur of clarity and wavering timbre. Aside from the Mediterranean percussion--supplied mainly by the differently-pitched hand drums--Radio Tarifa also dots its grooves with Afro-Cuban inflected bongos and an electric bass, making this global concatenation particularly delightful. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Fusion at its best.......2007-07-15

I bought 'Icon' several months ago and i have mixed feeling about it, Shawn Lane doesn't play enough on this album and i'm a little bored by the indian voices, the vocals take an important place on 'Icon' and i personally prefer to listen to the playing of the trio than some vocals - but i guess it is a matter of taste; on this album however, Shawn Lane plays an extraordinary (but very sad) guitar solo on 'Mirror'; that being said, i prefer to listen to by far 'Temporal Analogue of Paradise', the music is more joyous (there is a sad feeling going on throughout 'Icon'), the melodies are complex and hence, support repeated listenings where you always discover new interesting musical ideas; the album introduction also benefits from one of the most galvanizing guitar solo i have ever heard from a fusion record, turning thereafter into sweet melodic lines; the rhythm section is solid and the two tracks swings between experimental abstraction and melodic themes.

5 out of 5 stars There is no other album quite like this one........2007-03-14

Well actually, it IS like ONE other album - this is the remastered Bardo Records version of the original 1996 Day Eight Records cd with Mao Tse-tung's picture hanging behind the three group members. Anyway, here you have three virtuosos so confident in their ability and vision that they have the canasters to put out a cd with just two long (32-minutes and 27-minutes) improvised jams done in a live setting. And it all works beautifully. The album art is stark, the booklet notes are practically nonexistent, yet the title is this precocious and cerebral "Temporal Analogues of Paradise" which focuses the listener's attention on the MUSIC, and nothing else. For good reason. Drummer Jeff Sipe (aka Apt. Q-258) has an eclectic background, with influences from Carl Palmer to the great jazz masters, and he's magnificent in this type of setting. Bass player Jonas Hellborg (arguably the most famous of the trio) has a great arsenal of styles and sounds, venturing from soft melodic to bop to growling fury - he's quite a talent. Together, they form a solid and knowing rhythm section that's not shy about taking their turns in the soloing spotlight. After those two, one might be tempted to slight Shawn Lane as just "icing on the cake". But the former Black Oak Arkansas guitar wunderkind from Memphis takes what is already GREAT to...well, EXCEPTIONAL. I'd love to have a video of him playing, as he tended to sound like two (or even three!) guitarists at once in places. He could fly as fast as a neo-classical metal shredder, or alternately add beautiful background colors to the other soloists. For many of us, it was the unique sound and talent of the late Shawn Lane that originally drew us to this cd. Tastefully done all around, this is phenomenal improvised jazz/rock fusion of the very highest order.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9/10; Performance = 10/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 9/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.3 ("5 stars")

A greatest-hits disc after only four albums? Apparently, when you're as good as Love Spirals Downwards, you can get away with it--especially if you throw in a few remixes and rare tracks to make it worth your fans' while. Working its way backward through the band's career, Temporal provides a highlight reel of vocalist Suzanne Perry's ethereal musings and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lum's moody atmospheres. And while it's perhaps not too much of a stretch to go from the 4AD-style bliss of early tracks such as "Mediterrenea" and "This Endris Night" to the heavenly drum and bass of later songs such as "Alicia" and "Ring," LSD have never left their core audience behind, most of whom would heed Perry's siren call even if she sang in a heavy-metal band. Cocteau Twins fans, the torch has been passed. --Steve Landau

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2005-05-31

i decided to purchase this cd solely for the song "depression glass" that my older sister had introduced me to. i had no idea who the band was, i just knew i loved the song. since i am not too familiar with other works, i had decided to start off with this hits compilation, and i have not been able to stop listening to it since then. the melodies are so beautiful and the voices angelic. i love how guitars give a semi strong powerful/semi soothing mood to the music [depression glass, kykeon, mediterrenea] while some tracks are more techno-oriented, like in ring, asleep, and madras. i cannot get enough of this cd, and anyone not familiar with this group but interested in this genre of music should definitely start off here. you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, dreamy melodies.......2004-06-04

Founded by Ryan Lum, Love Spirals Downwards has been around since the early 90s. They're sadly no longer together but he's still signed to projekt records with a band called Lovespirals with new singer Anji Bee. I believe their sound is somewhat similar to this but I can't say for sure...

'Temporal' is LSD's final release and is a collection of music past & present. I'd been wanting to check this group out for a while but have always been leery of anything ambient based as it tends to lull me to sleep, and not because it's soothing but because it's boring! This, however, has altered my seemingly narrow perception.

While this is a compiled album of previously available material by LSD there's also a sparse amount of new tracks as well as exclusive remixes included here on their "greatest hits". I've never heard the originals before but on here "Alicia" is mostly downtempo drum&bass and "Misunderstood (I'll Always Love You)" is purely trip hop with some jazzy saxophones sounding in from time to time (those are the two remixes provided here).

Some tracks are supported by electronics with lilting sirens spiraling upwards while others are slower paced, relying more on acoustic instruments. But, no matter what, the textures never lose the lush, full and sumptuous sound they permeate that is always rich in atmosphere. In the early years Suzanne Perry was the main vocalist for LSD but later on her sister Kristen Perry took over and so I'm assuming that both voices can be heard throughout this record. However, I'm not 100% clear on that fact for nowhere inside the booklet does it specify who sings what. Every song is amazing, though, and as a whole it flows rather nicely and the beats are, in a word, heavenly.

LSD kinda reminds me of a more toned down version of Chandeen with a dreamier, female-fronted likeness of Lycia thrown in for good measure. I therefore recommend this to anyone who wants hypnotic soundscapes and ethereal voices that neither overpower nor serve as background accents to entrance and relax you, but without driving you to boredom.

{I truly love them all but my favorite tracks include: "Ring", "Asleep", "Madras", "Above The Lone", and "Depression Glass"}

5 out of 5 stars Towards the Future..........2003-05-30

Beautiful music! Love Sprials Downwards have managed to criss-cross and unite new age/moods/ambient and chill-out all in one. An eclectic masterpiece and a wonderful blueprint of newest instrumental music. We have come along way from the great foundations of Windham Hill, Narada and others. This is the future!

5 out of 5 stars Subtle pleasantries........2000-10-01

This CD slows my world down. Or maybe it just softens the edges a little; I'm not really sure which. The soft, echoing guitars and vocals are conducive to writing; even after the CD's finished playing, the melodies remain in my head, helping to coax new descriptions out of the things around me.

Two paws up for the track arrangement, too; the drum 'n bass tracks in the beginning transition very nicely into the more ethereal-sounding tracks at the end. All together, the 13 tracks are more like one big, lavender, 66-minute mass. Kind of like the album cover, now that I think about it.

I'd compare Love Spirals Downwards to the Cocteau Twins, since that's what I'm most reminded of here, but I don't really see the point. LSD are similar, sure, but by no means derivative. Take my advice and appreciate this album for what it alone is... oh yeah, and for what it'll do to your mind. Trust me; you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars SOMETHING SO GOOD.......2000-04-13

Temporal is the only album by LSD I have ever heard, but not the only one I will ever buy. I discovered the band some weeks ago, and I haven't heard much of other music lately, because their music steals all my attention. I wouldn't be much wrong if I say they remind me a bit of Cocteau Twins and the moods I get in when I listen to them. I am looking forward to buy the other records they made, and in meanwhile I will enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but first CD is better.......2006-12-09

I have all four Radio Tarifa CDs. Like some other reviewers, I find the first - Rumba Argelina - the best. I think the cut "La Canal" is their very best effort. Temporal is certainly cool music, but in my opinion, it doesn't match up to its predecessor.

Regarding the comments that some of the songs on Temporal sound like they're performed by someone other the usual lead singer (Benjamin Escoriza), in fact they are. According to the insert, cuts 5 and 6 feature a guest vocalist called "Falo", whose voice I don't like very much.

Temporal certainly bears the unique Radio Tarifa sound, but given the fact that it only has ten tracks, and two feature a vocalist I don't like, I felt a bit short changed.

5 out of 5 stars Music you can taste smell and touch.......2004-10-26

Although I don't think I can add too much to what has been said by others, I am compelled to tell you just how much this visceral recording grabs me. I feel like I am with the musicians.... I'm just not sure exactly where, on the map, that is! I know where Tarifa is, but the place this music takes me is pure fantasy. Wonderful carnal joy! If ever there was an advertisement for travelling to Spain, it is this recording. I like R. Argelina too, but this one you can taste, smell and touch. Pour a glass of full bodied red and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Just as beautiful as Rumba Argelina -- their other cd.......2002-12-29

I just love this cd. It is more beautiful than the Rumba Argelina cd that I own. I got it for a friend. It really makes you immagine Spain when ruled by the North Africans. It is just a great mix of new and old, and thank god they don't use the stupid sax that they did on R.A.

3 out of 5 stars several good songs.......2001-07-19

one reviewer likes the Rumba...cd better. i agree--the sound of the man's voice is a bit harsh this time. i wonder if its the same man. there are a few good songs on temporal. i like cancion sefardi....and i like tangos de la condicion and vestido flores. i program my cd player to play only these 3 songs. if you want to dance and dance and dance try rumba argelia--all the songs on that cd are great.

5 out of 5 stars Ravishing.......2001-08-17

Coming out of the French school, I didn't expect much from this young oboist; however, upon hearing this CD I found out that I was gravely mistaken. Leleux has an amazing talent and a superior sound. His interpretation of the Britten and Poulenc are my favorites out of those on the market, even beating John Mack's. His ability to sing in the high register, bring warmth and richness to his tone, and phrase smoothly and effortlessly makes this recording absolutely ravishing. Leleux is truly one of the best oboists I've heard to date.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Britten Collection.......2005-03-23

Another in the reissues from Naxos from the valuable Britten series on the now-defunct Collins Classics, this program was originally published in 1998. Steuart Bedford is undoubtedly the leading Britten conductor and this is left in no doubt in this delightful collection of Britten works that span forty years of his composing life, from the 1934 'Simple Symphony' to the gorgeous set of variations for viola and orchestra, 'Lachrymae,' from 1976. All are played with clarity and élan.

The 'Simple Symphony' for strings is probably the most familiar piece here. It was put together by Britten from pieces he had written in childhood and the movements have witty titles: Boisterous Bourrée, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande, and Frolicsome Finale. Bedford sorts it forth in appropriately simple fashion, letting the music speak for itself. The Northern Sinfonia strings play beautifully for him. 'Temporal Variations' from 1936 was originally for oboe and piano but the present oboe soloist, Nicholas Daniel, suggested to composer Colin Matthews about ten years ago that he arrange it for oboe and strings and that is the version heard here. It was premièred at the Aldeburgh Festival with Bedford leading the English Chamber Orchestra. It is a neoclassic theme and eight variations in the form of character pieces with titles such as 'March,' 'Oration,' 'Commination' (an archaic term meaning 'denunciation'), 'Resolution.' Daniel is fine advocate for this fourteen-minute miniature oboe concerto.

'A Charm of Lullabies' Op. 41 (1947) is also fairly well-known and has been recorded many times, but usually with the original piano accompaniment. Here we again have an arrangement by Colin Matthews, this time for chamber orchestra, done for the Indianapolis Symphony. It is sung here with simple intensity and wonderful diction by mezzo Catherine Wyn-Rogers. 'Suite on English Folk Tunes' Op. 90 (1974) subtitled 'A time there was ...' was Britten's last purely orchestral work. It combines some seventeenth-century folksongs from Playford's 'The Dancing Master' with songs collected in the twentieth-century from rural sources. This is vintage late Britten with rhythmic complexity, brilliant orchestration and open-faced tunefulness. One hears echoes of the 'Sea Interludes' and 'Prince of the Pagodas' in the creative orchestration.

For me the most riveting of the works recorded here is Britten's masterful 'Lachrymae' Op. 48a (1976) for solo viola and string orchestra. Originally written for viola and piano for William Primrose in 1950, Britten recast it for viola and strings in 1976 for a performance by Cecil Aronowitz and the ECO at Aldeburgh. It is a theme and variations based on two tunes of Dowland: primarily 'If my complaints could passions be' and, in the sixth variation, 'Flow my tears.' Of course the title 'Lachrymae' is taken from the latter song and generally reflects the overall tone of the piece, although Variation 8 is a lively march. It makes brilliant use of the melancholy timbre of the viola and is played movingly here by Philip Dukes. This is the astringent Britten familiar to us from such works as 'Phaedra' and 'Death in Venice.' For all its restriction of means, it is a brilliant and moving work.

We can only be grateful that Naxos has kept these wonderful performances of Britten's music alive by reissuing the Collins/Bedford series.

    Highly recommended.
