Scenes from My Life

Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
This gets my vote for debut jazz album of last year. This, despite the fact that it comes off - if you're not really listening - so sweetly as an Afro-Cuban-spiced song collection by a pleasant-enough vocalist who happens to be a bassist, too. Well, wake up, fellow listeners. "Scenes From My Life" is a deceptively smooth introduction to a substantial artist who might simultaneously satisfy populist and elite elements of the jazz crowd. A prodigiously self-taught youth from a remote village in West African Cameroon, Bona came to the country's capital, then to Paris, New York, and the world through the bands of proto-globo stars Harry Belafonte and Joe Zawinul. He can really write tunes, play, lead a band, and sing with the appealing soft-pedaled lyricism of the best Senegambian griots and Brazilian tropicalistas. On electric bass, Bona gives graceful lilt to a variety of funky chants and vamps, also applying the pure tone he's derived from his hero Jaco (at his healthiest) to aching ballads and in-the-pocket riffs. Even more gratifying, Bona's original songs (12 of them here) are superior - brimming with refreshing, singable melodies that trade on reggae, Latin jazz, and Afro-Diaspora music, but never less than musically. Each tune is distinctly set and memorable; highlights include the sharply fusionesque "Djonbwe," the driving Cuban-styled "Te Dikalo," the audibly seductive "One Minute" (the lone track Bona sings in English), and the string- quartet introduction on "Muna Nyuwe." Bona's titles may be obscure, but his message translates into real pleasure. The music is sunny, buoyant, mysterious, and up-to-date, perfect for sophisticated radio. In performance, he's unforced and charismatic, in a league with a very boyish Gilberto Gil if not quite King Sunny Ade. And there's jazz in the mix, melody that can be transmuted in multiple ways, rhythm that makes a difference, performance imbued with vitality and the belief that music matters. Bona's authenticity shines through the slightest bit of gloss. As he grows into his personal but unabashedly accessible idiom, he's already well worth hearing.

Bassist Charlie Haden was an integral part of Ornette Coleman's pioneering avant-garde groups in the '50s and '60s and led his own equally forward-thinking Liberation Music Orchestra. His ensemble Quartet West, with tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, drummer Larance Marable, and pianist Alan Broadbent, revealed a sentimental side of his musical personality that surprised many. This recording, with string arrangements by Broadbent, sounds like a soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler film as Haden's sturdy bass tones make him a worthy supporting actor. But although Shirley Horn's ethereal voice sparkles on "Lonely Town," "In Love in Vain," and "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," and crooner Bill Henderson's towering pipes are radiant on "Why Did I Choose You," "Ruth's Waltz," "You My Love," and "Easy on the Heart," all of the material is in pretty much the same ballad tempo, which, compounded by the time length of the CD, robs it of the romantic resonance it could truly shine on the listener. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Age breeds a shining moment.......2003-11-20

The criticisms miss the point. This is an effort that does a rare thing - it brings together men and women who can put the experience of life to judicious use in their art. Unlike listening to the deterioration other performers have faced, in later years, at the hands of studio production teams that no longer know what to do with them, Charlie Haden has found a way to create a beautiful volume of space in which to let the years of these venerated performers shine through. It is in this space you shall hear the notes of lives lived and savored.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but dismissable........2001-08-09

Haden's pleasant miscellany of neglected but deserving ballads is indeed a mixed bag, but somehow his focus, purpose, and method elude this listener. Neophyte writers are frequently enjoined to compose with a sharp, definitive, unified "thesis." Haden could have used a bit of coaching along these lines before producing this collection. Even drawing upon a common composer (as opposed to ranging from Kern to Rachmaninoff to public domain) might have provided the needed coherence to the project.

In any case, it's always a welcome experience to hear Shirley Horn; the revival of a touching ballad like "In Love in Vain" merits our appreciation; and though I was never a big fan of Bill Henderson (an acquired taste), he deserves to be recorded based on the evidence of this recording.

In sum, this album is more than anything else a "sampler" and should have been priced accordingly.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing by Quartet West standards.......2001-05-09

The outstanding Quartet West album is 'Always Say Goodbye'. On that CD, Broadbent demonstrates his skills at orchestral arrangement, and Haden deftly selects great oldies to intermingle with some of his own superb compositions. Haden also takes some historic performances -- such as Jo Stafford on vocals -- to bring a resonance to the new covers. The experiment was very successful.

You can see the logic behind this subsequent album: instead of using dusty old recordings, why don't we use today's state-of-the-art production to capture the voices of several current artists? And why don't we let Alan orchestrate the whole album?

The trouble is that the orchestration, beautiful though it is throughout, constrains the band terribly. And the vocals swamp the album. (Actually the Jo Stafford track on 'Always Say Goodbye' is one of the weakest on the album.) They say that the saxophone is the instrument closest to the human voice, and it is Ernie Watts who suffers most on this album, The sax is simply crowded out by all the singing. It is only on the stand-out track, 'Prelude en la mineur', an instrumental re-working of a Ravel piece, that Watts finally gets a chance to let rip.

Shirley Horn's vocals are fine, particularly on 'Lonely Town'. But I simply cannot listen to any of the tracks containing Bill Henderson's voice, and sadly, there are four of them.

The most touching song is the last one, where Haden himself bravely takes the vocal lead. It's a song his mother used to sing on the radio, back in the early 1940s, when the entire Haden family would appear on KWTO Springfield. It is a farewell to the dead, and also a reassurance that one day they will meet again.

If you want a quick survey of this CD, check out tracks #1, #9 and #13. It's a long way from the days of Haden's playing with Ornette Coleman and the Liberation Orchestra, and it's very mellow.

5 out of 5 stars If you breathe and have ears, buy this record!.......2001-04-15

I first heard of Charlie Haden on Dublin's best radio music show - The Mystery Train presented by John Kelly on RTE Radio 1. I bought this CD and it has never been off my current play list. This is beautiful music that touches the heart. Listen to Wayfaring Stranger, Lonely Town, I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life, or Ruth's Walz after a tough day at the office or jammed in traffic and you will be back in touch with the good things in life. As someone who has evolved though Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Queen, U2, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, BB King, Grant Green etc, Charlie Haden is proof of my graduation. After since buying other and even better Haden CD's, I am looking forward to seeing him in concert with Quartet West here in Dublin on April 29. BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars A Night and a Lonely Town.......2000-05-24

Despite its problems, I think this album still deserves a five-star rating. Seemingly inspired by the music of moody classic cinema, a listener might well envision a seedy nightclub in a fog-swept black & white San Francisco of the 1940s or a tearful Ingrid Bergman about to board a twin-propellor leaving Rick and Casablanca behind her forever.

Regardless of which side of the Atlantic you envision on your moody musical journey, this is definitely a lounging type of music, perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons, after-theatre drives around town on warm summer evenings, warm candle-lit baths, or romantic dinners for two. The beautifully romantic ballads range from the longing "Lonely Town" to the mostly-resolute "I'm Going to Laugh You Right Out of My Life" to the quietly complacent "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Interspersed with these great standards, however, are wonderful instrumental pieces which frame the remaining vocals with stunningly dramatic moods.

The only flaw is the rather unappealing voice of Bill Henderson, who seems to be suffering from a weak set of lungs, if not from lack of enthusiasm. Henderson seems to strive for the vocal capabilities of Shirley Horn, who sings on 1, 4, 7 and 10, but is incapable of achieving those same dramatic pitches of his fellow artist. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job on "Ruth's Waltz" and "Easy on the Heart" even if "Why Did I Choose You" is downright painful to listen to. Haden, who sings on 13, seems similarly incapable of reaching Horn's heights, but "Wayfaring Stranger," the traditional song he chose to render, is capable of carrying itself with the slow somber tone it evokes in the listener.

Regardless of its faults, this remains a beautiful album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the kind of sit-at-home music it captures so very well in its beautifully jazzy tunes that are, at the very least, easy on the ears.

This is probably one of the best album of its kind. A fantastic blend of styles. This is the future of music

3 out of 5 stars Solid debut from the best bassist in a long time........2005-09-02

Every so often an artist arrives of such unnerving talent that he deserves to be noticed, usually more often than he is. Such is the case with Richard Bona, bassist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, one-time music director for Harry Belafonte and Joe Zawinul sideman. "Scenes from My Life" is his debut album, stepping out of the shadow of those fine artists he's worked with.

Being an electric bass player in jazz means the inevitable comparisons to Jaco Pastorius need to be dealt with-- while many great bass players have been considered the heir-apparent to Jaco's legacy, I'd argue that Bona is in many ways the best bassist since Jaco. His playing is fluid, smooth, and subtle-- what made Jaco great to me, beyond his stunning talent was his ability to play subtlely. More importantly, he's his own man as a bassist-- Jaco's influence is clear, but there's no mistaking Bona's playing. Granted, Jaco always had the bass mixed way in front, and if there's a complaint to be made about "Scenes From My Life", it's that the bass is not mixed up front. His playing is sublime and really should be heard more clearly (this is a problem that is not replicated on later albums where the mix is much more bass-centric).

Sung largely in Bona's native tongue (I don't have the liner notes in front of me, but I believe the language is called duala, native to people of the Camaroon), with one exception sung in English, the songs cover a number of jazz, rock, pop and funk moods. As a vocalist, Bona's high tenor is agile enough to carry a ballad with delicacy and sensitivity and move on a funk piece. One problem though is that the mix makes few adjustments for different moods of pieces, this causes parts of the album to sort of blend together into a "background music" mode, and sometimes midtempo seems to rule.

Even in this environment, there's quite a few standout cuts here-- the gentle, groove based opener "Dipita", lovely piano-and-bass ballad "Eyala" (where Bona's bass playing, while terribly low in the mix is as Jaco-ish as it gets), funk number "Djombwe" (betraying a Stanley Clarke influence in the slap-and-pop bassline) English sung pop piece "One Minute", filled with arrangement subtleties and a fantastic bassline and strings-and-vocals "Muna Nyuwe", where Bona's vocal is filled with mournfulness and remorse without ever sounding pathetic.

All criticisms aside (and really most of them have to do with the mix more than anything else), it's a solid debut by Bona, and it's clear that there's big things to expect from him in the future-- I'd recommend starting with "Reverence" for an introduction to him-- its a bit less accessible I think, but a vastly superior record. But this is a good one and worth having.

5 out of 5 stars what a surprise!.......2005-05-04

4 out of 5 stars Great talent but "no one" is "Jaco".......2005-02-14

It never ceases to amaze me how carelessly people make comparisons between talented artists and true groundbreaking phenomenons.

Richard Bona is a truly gifted artist and a phenomenally good bassist. But enough of this silliness about being better than Jaco Pastorius. For one thing, without Jaco there is no Richard Bona, at least not playing the way he does now. Jaco completely changed the musical landscape for bassists and for that matter all musicians. His genius goes so far beyond just being a great player and twenty years from now they won't be talking about all of the bass players that Richard influenced, rather that he was a standout amongst the thousands who were influenced and shaped by Jaco.
Not to mention Jaco as a composer of classic compositions that will live on forever. He's just one of those once in a lifetime musical phenomenons, which is taking nothing away from Richard.

Richard has accomplished a lot and has much more to accomplish in his career, but reaching Jaco's place in musical history, with all due respect, is a completely different thing.

5 out of 5 stars Real maestro of african music.......2003-01-16

Richard Bona's music has made us, cameroonians, proud of our country. His music relates to and represents all regions of cameroon. i love especially 'Muntula Moto' in the 'Reverence' album.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful collection.......2001-03-25

A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Piano Fan.......2007-01-20

I'm no musician, but I love this music. Although, I may not be able to put it into words as eloquently and as knowledgably as others, I am a painter and believe this music to be of the best quality of art. I would suggest it to anyone, especially someone beginning to appreciate classical piano music. It's given me so much satisfaction to hear something so acceptable to my ears. I feel Walter Gieseking illuminates this music in subtle ways I cannot fully understand but sincerely appreciate.

        5 out of 5 stars Incorporeal pianism!.......2006-01-20

Walter Gieseking was gifted of this particular feature. His pianissimos were simply enviable; the slender approach to Mendelssohn works out as ring to finger. All of us know about his supreme eloquence around Debussy performances, but Gieseking underlines the admirable lyricism provided with an enraptured approach, sounding much more eloquent respect the most of pianists who tend to remark glissandos and arpeggios forgetting many times the absolute chamber work character, where elegance, panache and nuance shake hands.

This is one of the most successful records ever performed, but if you have besides Rena Kyriakou, Guiomar Novaes and Anna Dorffman, you should not have to worry about it, because you would have the cream of the cream versions about this work.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD !.......2004-05-11

I own two other recordings of the lyric pieces: one by Gilels on Deutsche Grammophon and one by Sviatoslav Richter on Live Classics. Although I am a huge Richter fan, I actually prefer Gieseking's account. He truly was a brilliant pianist. His account of the Lieder ohne Worte is also quite good. All in all, if you can find this set (I think it may be out of print), buy it immediately. It is well worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars 17 Lieder ohne Worte (17 Songs Without Words).......2000-06-13

Gieseking's brilliant and soulful interpretation of these pieces depict the reason for their title(s) - they are songs that do not need words - the music itself tells the story. Included on this CD are songs about passion, beauty, love, tragedy, triumph and bittersweet melancholy. Other artists who have performed these pieces on published CD's, such as Ilse von Alpenheim, play them fairly well from a purely technical standpoint, but they haven't captured the emotion needed to evolve the music into story telling 'songs'.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars follow up.......2003-12-14

Oops, sorry, forgot about the soloists. John Aler has a brighter tenor sound, not as dark as Robert Tear, but the way he handles the recitative text is very similar. Both he an John Ostendorf are a little heavy on the vibrato for my taste, but their diction is not that much skewed by it. J. Ostendorf is a heavy, rich bass, which is striking when you first hear it against Aler's brighter lyric voice. It almost seems wooly, but he steers it away from any Wagnerian tendancies to create a striking bu handsome compliment. Baird is gorgeous- it's that simple. She is not my favorite, but she comes real close. With a voice reminiscent of Emma Kirkby and expression along the lines of Janet Baker, it's a refreshing treat among all these increasing Helden-Sopranos who think that baroque music gives them an excuse to through all delicacy out the window. Over all, this recording is more of a 4 1/2, and I think the most well balanced one may come across.

4 out of 5 stars diamond in rough.......2003-12-14

The conductor may be no Raymond Leppard, but he's preferable by a great stretch than some of these other "new baroque" recordings out there where everything is a forte marcato allegretto. He maintains the baroque atmosphere, much like Harnoncourt's sound (is this he? I don't know who the conductor is). The chorus also has the baroque sound, but my goodness! Thank God for a chorus with proper vowels and a nice sound! Much better than some Deutsche Grammaphon choruses I've heard. If you like the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner, you'd probably like this chorus as well (I myself am a choister and soloist specializing in oratorio and other such sacred music).

4 out of 5 stars An occasional Haendel........1999-10-26

The enclosed booklet is too poor. The singers are only good (the best is the soprano). Only good also the conductor . In this way this Haendel's work seems a minor one. Is really so?
