If you like Gorecki and Part, you will want to buy this cd. As a classical music fan with widespread interests, I have placed this on my favorites shelf. It is deeply spiritual, tuneful, and interesting.

This is the predilect composer of Kielowski , that polish genius .
His music reflects the secret and dark poetry of Kielowski in his films . From the Double life of Veronica , and the most of the chapters of his Decalogue . In the CD you will find the Decalogue No. 1,8 and 9 , so the three colors : Red White and Blue: Secret Garden a film of 1994 .

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2000-05-29

Insightfully beautiful, Preisner's Music is an album of a journey to discovery. The fine tunes and warming notes conjure images of a Sunday feast with loved ones. Joyous, dark, melancholic, and subdued, the myriad of contemplative moments allow the listener to momentarily feel Preisner's passion for life and sound, and to see through his eyes the splendour of a vast landscape that slowly unwinds. Preisner's Music is truly inspiriational.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2000-01-19

...but what goes really well with this music are the films that match it, especially Damage (Fatale) and Mouvements du Desir. One cannot listen to these pieces without conjuring images from their movies and that is quite an accomplishment for any composer.

5 out of 5 stars Great discovery.......2000-01-02

I was striken by the music of the film 'bleu'. Then I bought this greatest as a try. His music is so-o striking! Totally beyond my expectation. Highest recommendation for soundtrack lovers.

This program seems designed primarily to display soprano Sumi Jo's fabulous singing and famous stylistic eclecticism. However, it also exhibits an admirable religious inclusiveness, encompassing expressions of faith from the Latin liturgy to Negro spirituals; there is even a Richard Strauss song that is essentially a paean to love. An incongruous note is struck by a nun's song from an operetta by Benatzky that is a corny Viennese waltz and by a soundtracklike arrangement of a 16th-century Ave Maria. Ranging from Mozart to Broadway, this musical mix is held together by Sumi Jo's ravishingly beautiful, pure, warm voice and the way she can color and inflect it, and by her mastery of every style (though not every language; her German in particular is unintelligible). Her intonation is impeccable, her breath control incredible. Jo's top notes soar triumphantly, and she can sustain them indefinitely, with enough power left to make a crescendo at the end. Highlights include Ravel's "Kaddisch," which sends shivers down the spine; arias from operas by Rossini and Donizetti; and arias from sacred works by Gounod and Fauré. Of two spirituals, the second one is simpler and more convincing. The accompanying forces are excellent; James Conlon doubles as pianist when not conducting. Susan Graham also makes an appearance in the moving invocation "Take Care of This House" from Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. --Edith Eisler

3 out of 5 stars Nice Voice.......2007-05-06

Sumi Jo has a beautiful voice but her renditions of Motherless Child and Amazing Grace were not impressive at all. The vibrato was too uncontrollable. The Ave Maria was so,so. I did not hear the richeness others have declared in their assesments. Don't get me wrong, the instrument is quite beautiful but only in some selected selections.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-17

"Music and poetry emerge from man's desire to give thanks, to praise and to pray to his gods. One of the magical powers of the human voice is that it can fly, on the wings of songs (a la Mendelssohn) to heaven and appear to be in direct communication with God." Therefore, it is no surprise that prayer is omnipresent throughout the history of music. Sumi Jo has chosen an excellent representation of songs including most styles and periods which include : Baroque (Caccini)-Classical (Mozart)-Contemporary (Preisner)-Romantic Opera (Rossini,Donizetti)-German 'Singspiel'(Schubert)-Lieder (Richard Strauss)-French church music (Gounod ,Faure)-traditional music (spiritual)-Jewish melodies (Ravel)-Viennese operetta (Johann Strauss) and the American musical (Bernstein).

Sumi Jo, born in Korea,is a much sought after coloratura soprano, having triumphed on stage, and in recitals all over the world. Not being fond of coloraturas, I make an exception for her voice, because of its depth along with the very high register. She shows a great deal of sensitivity to all of her varied selections on this disc, and each delivery is a 'gem' unto itself.

I must personally comment on those works that I particularly enjoy. Hearing her sing Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum' was a real treat; it doesn't matter how often one hears that lovely piece, just like all of his music, it 'wears' well. The 'Pie Jesu' was absolutely stunning as Sumi Jo sang it, and it is a pleasure for me to hear the selection from "GIGI" by Lerner & Loewe; not being a great broadway fan, I have always liked that specific musical. I think because it was well-done when I saw it years and years ago.

This disc is abolutely totally enjoyable. There is something for all musical tastes, and the conductor/pianist James Conlon does a great job pulling it together!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sumi Jo- coloratura supreme.......2006-04-09

One word: Lacrimosa. It haunts you and will stay with you long after you hear it. I actually forced several if my coworkers to listen to it many of which are not opera fans and even they could not argue the beauty of it. One of my coworkers was actual on the verge of tears by the end of the song.

The rest of the album is enchanting as well as breath taking. I am a harsh critic when it comes to singers so I do not give those compliments very often, nor am I easily moved by singers but Sumi Jo has certainly done that with this album.

My only complaint is that I would have liked to hear her take of "Ave Maria" by Schubert which, while recorded many times over, would complimented her voice perfectly due to it's simplicity. "Sing low sweet chariot" would have been another great one to hear but as far as spirtuals are concerned I was very happy with her acepella version of "Amazing Grace." I was never a huge fan of "Amazing Grace" since it's been done a thousand times over but she brought such seetness and emotion to it. Of course I am kind of biased becuase I offically hate the "belting" version of this song and that's how it's usually done. It's nice to hear a simple, straight forward version.

My last comment is that it's nice to hear Sumi Jo sing less operatic pieces considering most opera singers are rarely bold enough to sing anything other than classical pieces, excluding Renee Fleming of recent.

5 out of 5 stars Prayerful and beautiful.......2005-11-14

It is a refreshing change to have a collection of arias on a CD with a title that actually bears some relevance to the contents. This is indeed a prayerful collection. That means, of course, that you have to be in the appropriately contemplative mood in order to appreciate it.

Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music.

Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have worried. In the latter she reveals a soulfulness that fits the lyrics perfectly.

The only track not worthy of this collection is Bernstein's Take Care of This House. I suppose, as it is a prayer, it was an obvious song to include, and Jo sings it very well, but it is just a very poor song. That still leaves 14 excellent tracks that, if you are a lover of good singing, you will want in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A spectalce of voice and vocalization.......2004-12-29

I bought this used from an Amazon.com dealer and it came with a cutout on the left side of the CD box. Can this specacular CD possibly have gone out of print by Christmas 2004? If so we have lost one of the benchmark recordings of this splendid artist.

Never is there a weak moment in this incredibly beautiful collection of classical bleeding chunks and spirituals. I don't think you'll confuse Sumi for your favorite spiritual singer in "Amazing Grace" and "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" but she is magnificent singing the complete and incomplete tunes elsewhere on the CD by famous classical composers including Mozart, Richard Strauss, Rossini, Schubert and Donizetti, to name some of them.

She is in wonderful voice and fresh-faced for the Loewe-Lerner "Say a prayer for me tonight" and does an equally nice job with Susan Graham accompanying Leonard Bernstein's "Take care of this house" from "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". I'm not much for this kind of music -- I bought this exclusively for her rendition of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" -- but it adds a dimension to the concert that brings it into the realm of popular Broadway tunes.

This is a wonderful concert of familiar and not so familiar songs from a singer whose voice is eloquent, beautiful and rich, with significant range and span from PPP to FFF. Sumi Jo controls her voice well throughout the concert, giving everyone something to think about regardelss of musical preference. This might have been improved if she'd included a Beatles tune -- maybe "Elenor Rigby" or "Yesterday" -- accompanied by the orchestra and James Conlon's direction. But it stands with any similar collection by any singer as it is.

Known more for his film scores than for his full-length concert works, Zbigniew Preisner injects a good dose of his famed film score methodologies into this recording. Divided into two parts, Requiem and Life, this work is outstanding in its first nine movements, capturing soaring choral blasts that startle and hold the ear steadily, as does the occasional churning organ and the chamber ensemble, which seems to make far more sound than is possible. The Requiem as a whole is also stylistically cleaved in two: Life heads wholeheartedly into the realm of filmic composition (doing so in four episodes). Resolution is always on the horizon, but the musical tensions seem directed toward a visual conclusion, rather than any kind of sonic release or resolution. To that end, the music itself, especially early in Life, is a bit thin. Maybe it's the alto saxophone, which plays simple figures that get washed out in the cavernous audio. Or maybe it's the building march-like cadence of the "Apocalypse "episode, which seems to announce a particular character without ever producing one. Perhaps it's the desire to create mood without exploring the complexities. As film music, this is excellent stuff, easily capable of throwing musical beams on action. As a purely sonic phenomenon, it's sometimes too much, sometimes too little, and only briefly balanced between the two. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you like Gorecki and Part you'll love this cd.......2007-01-29

The music is haunting, and achingly beautiful. I am not one who especially loves the operatic soprano voice, and about the only opera I an take is Puccini. However, if you like the solo in Gorecki's Sym. #3, for example, you will love this cd. The sound is fine, with a cathedral-like ambiance. I own over a thousand classical cds and this is on my top 50 rack.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Mystical Experience.......2005-12-29

This evocative composition, as it slowly unfolds, takes the listener on an emotional and spiritual journey. Whether or not you understand all of the segments of the traditional Latin Requiem text, plus the additional Greek and Polish lyrics, the piece is powerful to both the inexperienced and highly discerning listener. Listeners will observe the work to be in two distinct parts with contrasting vocal and orchestral forces; however, concept, thematic material, and composition style help to unify this disparate pairing of forces.

The first part features a highly unusual adult male SATB quartet, soprano soloist, string quartet, organ, and percussion.
The second part's vocal forces include an SATB choir, soprano and countertenor soloists, plus an additional voice sung on this recording by a youth. The orchestral forces of the second part include the large symphonic forces of a film score, and some unusual instruments for a Requiem including alto saxophone and cimbalom.

One of the features that make this recording particularly successful is the acoustics of the recording locations: the two utilized for this recording are extremely rich with reverberation. This reverberation sustains the long musical lines and fills the piece to accommodate the slowly unfolding harmonic progressions. Architecturally, the work's construction is solid, with structural pillars unifying the first and second parts, with a definite roadmap to take the listener on an emotional journey.

I am delighted to hear this recording before conducting its American premiere at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For additional information, call (260)426-7421 ext. 24.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, peaceful music.......2005-04-12

I love requiems and this CD is an incredible addition to my collection. Both of the different pieces are equally moving. I highly recomend this one!

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Work.......2004-12-30

I believe the details of this work are already described quite well in the other reviews. I would like to add that although it is fairly slow and somber, it is miraculously powerful. Great buy.

thanks "A music fan"! that info was just what I was looking for! much better!

4 out of 5 stars Why are there sooo many instrumental pieces?.......2005-11-22

Perhaps because they are composed by the great film composer Zbigniew Preisner who is credited with works such as the Three Colors Trilogy, Damage, The Double Life of Veronique, and The Decalogue. Admittedly, a film such as When a Man Loves a Woman can't equate artistically with these European Arthouse pics, or their music, it does boast the same excellent composer.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not what you're probably expecting..........2003-11-23

A lot of people went out and bought this cd after watching the movie, but probably not because of Percy Sledge. Unfortunately, that's about all you get. The orchestral pieces are great background music, but are strangely prioritized for the soundtrack in the place of Michael Stipe and Rickie Lee Jones. For everyone going crazy trying to find out what songs are missing from the soundtrack, I hope this helps:

"Running From Mercy" by Rickie Lee Jones
"I'm a Good Man" by Robert Cray

"Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M.

Sometimes, the orchestrations emphasize qualities of the music or the orchestration is changed in such a way that the original intent seems lost and such is the case here. This is most noticeable in something like the theme from Never on Sunday which, without the bozouki, sounds a bit like music for a German beer hall. It just does not work. However for those who just want a lot of orchestral music that is not too demanding or too long this is a generous selection.

5 out of 5 stars It delivers!.......2007-01-10

Naturally, one must posess a predisposition for this music appreciation. That said, when played to restore your inner-energy...it works. The specific selection and sequence provide that balance best meant to reenergize. Normally, I'm not 'that' into this music-presentation. For some reason at the time of perusing, it seemed logical to give it a try. Ultimately, I am very glad that I did...powerful stuff, indeed.

3 out of 5 stars this item IS your money's worth of masterworks.......2006-03-17

this recording is worth the money to buy, especially since it has two c.d.s inside. the songs are indeed fine music, many of the masterworks which you "need" to have. but it is neither the finest recording, nor is it a collection of the finest performances. i am in a near-spectacular choral group which performs these works, and i tend to get overly emotionally involved with grand art. so it is especially helpful, that like the other reviewer said, you can consider playing this through an audio player at your workplace.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the office.......2005-09-24

This stays in my stereo at work, and is perfect for "those days."
These CD's are excellent resources for those who don't realize some of the musical heritage has been lost by the Church and needs to be reclaimed.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2005-08-14

This is a very good CD and for those that love the music of the old cathedrals this is the CD you want to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful variety.......2003-06-10

This has got 2 be 1 of my fav. cd's of all time. The variety & arrangment seems 2 be very well planned. While all of the songs are very beautiful & breathtaking, my 2 favs are the Requiem for My Friend by Preisner & the Dies Irae immediately following it. If you ever run across the Preisner Requiem I would highly recommend that you buy it b/c it is soooo expressive & emotional.

Believe Silva Screen saved the best for last...the ongoing series comes to an end with "Arthouse Cafe 3"...this time highlighting not just the scores from France, but the entire European community...thus with have "Classic European Film Music" ...some of the best known composers around ~ Enrique Bacalov, Gato Barbieri, Van Den Budenmayer, Klaus Doldinger, Goblin, Maurice Jarre, Gustav Mahler, Ennio Morricone, Zbigniew Preisner, Nino Rota, Ilona Sekacz and Mikis Theodorakis...each composer so different in their approach to the story-line, but always setting the mood for each character to act out his or her part.

There are several stand outs on this compilation that need mentioning ~ "IL POSTINO"(Bacalov)..."LA DOLCE VITA"(Rota)..."Z"(Theodorakis)..."CINEMA PARADISO"(Morricone)..."PHAEDRA"(Theodorakis)..."ARMARCORD"(Rota)..."THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE"(Van den Budenmayer/Preisner)...and my all-time favorite "ZORBA THE GREEK"(Theodorakis), loved the film with Anthony Quinn, and the music was so inspiring, so earthy and festive, with a hint sadness reflections of daily life, with its ups and downs, will never forget the impact this had on me when I first heard his music.

Under the watchful eye of James Fitzpatrick(producer), featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic...conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine...Mark Ayres producing Electronic Music...so my "film-score-buff" friends, this is a keeper, make room for one of the most outstanding collections to come out of the SILVA SCREEN vaults!

I found this selection of European Film Music harmonically well put together...although I expected to have the themes played a little longer - some are only two to three minutes long - This takes away from the beauty of the melody. Otherwise the combination between the themes in "Il Postino" and "Cinema Paradiso" or "Zorba" combined with "Amarcord" and "Das Boot" makes it a very atractive C.D., offering "the unexpectated".

5 out of 5 stars Simple and beautiful.......2002-01-11

The ten pieces on this CD are simple - and most of their beauty results from this simplicity. They have the lyrical, dreamlike tone we know and love in the music of Zbigniew Preisner. And it's always a nice dream expressed by these melodies - some are outright happy tunes ('To See More' and 'The Art Of Flying') or even funny ('A Tune A Day').
Lesdzek Mozdzer gives them a jazz-like touch in his improvisations, which prevents the music from turning into too sweat candy, but also lets the themes appear the more clear and fresh in their simple beauty (warning! some are earcatchers).
This is music you need no guide for, no knowledge of technique, history of music and biography of the artist, as it speaks for itself.
People who expect hard intellectual tasks, headaches when listening first, and proud membership in an exclusive circle of distinct experts when they got used to ('understood') a certain, 'difficult style' will not like this CD.
After all it's not pure jazz or demanding contemporary music, but something as difficult as simple, yet intelligent, music you can just listen to and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars I keep coming back to this one - what a great surprise!.......2001-10-20

I am a fan of all kinds of music - from hard/alternative rock (my last two CDs purchased were Staind and Nickelback) to house/trance and other kinds of club music, to country, to classical. I have to say that when I come home at the end of the day and settle under my down comforter with a book and a cup of tea, this has been the background music of choice almost every day since I picked up this CD a few months ago. This is some wonderful piano music, composed and performed with tenderness. It is sweet and melancholy and a refreshing 45 minutes of simplicity in this complicated world.

I must also state that saw "Blue" and "Red" a few years ago but don't remember the music he wrote for those movies especially moving me. I'll have to give them another look/listen now.

1 out of 5 stars Preisner: 10 Dull Pieces for Piano.......2000-10-16

Preisner is a composer whose name is likely unknown to most, but whose music, at least for foreign film buffs, may be fairly well known. A Polish composer acclaimed primarily for his film work, he composed the music to the Three Colors films: Three Colors Blue, Three Colors Red, and Three Colors White and also the music to the Double Life of Veronique. His works in this area are well recognized and he has won several significant awards. The pieces on this EMI Classics disc, however, are not accompanied by fine acting, by beautiful cinematography, by vivid character depictions or intricate plot twists. Nor do they utilize the movie composer's standard bag of tricks-huge orchestras and choirs with every possible tone color available. No, the Ten Easy Pieces for piano stand alone, their only ornamentation short descriptive titles, such as Farewell, or Meditation, intended to orient the listener's mind in the right direction.

And herein lies the problem. Preisner may be a fine film composer, but he needs the visual and theatrical elements of film as well as a larger sound world to create meaningful music. This stuff is pleasant enough the first time around, for a while; but a concentrated listening to the entire disc had me hoping desperately for even a single moment of true emotion or drama. It never came--the closest Preisner got was to sound for a few minutes like bad Rachmaninoff. This music is as filling as whipped cream, and just as nutritious. I found it quite telling that one of the pieces is titled, A Tune a Day--about which Preisner says "I am already grasping things. Just walking, just speaking, just thinking, just playing. I just know that I know nothing." When any artist admits they are cranking out a work a day, and they know nothing, alarm bells should ring!

This is music to put on, then leave the room or perhaps fall asleep.

Although these pieces are not written for film, Preisner has taken his day job too much to heart. This disc reveals the dilemma of a film composer-essentially he is an employee hired to write background music, not art music. The two should not be confused--this is the musical equivalent of wall-paper: it may be nice, but you really aren't supposed to pay attention to it! Preisner's melodies are all very simple and banal, they are extremely limited in range, register and dynamic expression. And although a jazz influence gives some of the pieces some rhythmic interest, they all have the simpliest of forms- primarily repetition with very little development.

I don't mean to say there is nothing of worth on the disc, and those of you who delight in New Age Music may enjoy the Ten Easy Pieces. The piano performance of Leszsek Mozdzer, is excellent; and the liner notes attribute some improvisation to him. In the one piece where the amount of improvisation is clear, Talking to Myself, it is obvious that the improvisations are the most interesting of the music. Again, this is symptomatic of a film composer's work--so often they simply write either the melody or perhaps a lead sheet with some sketched-in harmonies and leave it to their assistants to work out the details.

EMI's marketing department provided a short write-up of the disc in which they claim Preisner's music is like "Erik Satie meets Keith Jarrett meets Gorecki" I've heard those composers, and let me tell you sir, Preisner is no Satie, Jarrett, or Gorecki.

This is a disc I won't be listening to again--maybe I'll give it to my wife's beauty salon to play during aromatherapy.

    5 out of 5 stars I can't stop playing this CD -.......2000-09-27

Wonderful work. I think Mr. Preisner really understands the piano, and has created a set of pieces that are exciting, modern, and emotionally charged. These songs have a feeling of freshness that is so lacking in today's music. The performance is equally exciting. Above all, they are, as the title suggests, easy pieces. One can really hear what's happening musically, and that is something that I, as a music lover and amateur musician, really appreciate. My 6 year old daughter, a talented beginning piano student, loves this CD as well, so I say - encore!

    5 out of 5 stars 'Simply beautiful'.......2000-06-12

Like most who've fallen in love with Preisner's work, I first became familiar with the very powerful, awe-inspiring music from Kieslowski films. 10 Easy Pieces is very different, but only inasmuch as it lacks the instrument combinations and complexity of his earlier work. As the title suggests, this was completely intentional by the composer, who perhaps just wanted to take a break or just do something different for a change after 'A Requiem for a Friend.' While the 'Preisner's Music' compilation may be better for someone generally interested in a range of Preisner's work, 10 Easy Pieces nonetheless captures his genius in its simplicity, and is a must for any fan.
