This program seems designed primarily to display soprano Sumi Jo's fabulous singing and famous stylistic eclecticism. However, it also exhibits an admirable religious inclusiveness, encompassing expressions of faith from the Latin liturgy to Negro spirituals; there is even a Richard Strauss song that is essentially a paean to love. An incongruous note is struck by a nun's song from an operetta by Benatzky that is a corny Viennese waltz and by a soundtracklike arrangement of a 16th-century Ave Maria. Ranging from Mozart to Broadway, this musical mix is held together by Sumi Jo's ravishingly beautiful, pure, warm voice and the way she can color and inflect it, and by her mastery of every style (though not every language; her German in particular is unintelligible). Her intonation is impeccable, her breath control incredible. Jo's top notes soar triumphantly, and she can sustain them indefinitely, with enough power left to make a crescendo at the end. Highlights include Ravel's "Kaddisch," which sends shivers down the spine; arias from operas by Rossini and Donizetti; and arias from sacred works by Gounod and Fauré. Of two spirituals, the second one is simpler and more convincing. The accompanying forces are excellent; James Conlon doubles as pianist when not conducting. Susan Graham also makes an appearance in the moving invocation "Take Care of This House" from Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Nice Voice.......2007-05-06
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-17
Sumi Jo, born in Korea,is a much sought after coloratura soprano, having triumphed on stage, and in recitals all over the world. Not being fond of coloraturas, I make an exception for her voice, because of its depth along with the very high register. She shows a great deal of sensitivity to all of her varied selections on this disc, and each delivery is a 'gem' unto itself.
I must personally comment on those works that I particularly enjoy. Hearing her sing Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum' was a real treat; it doesn't matter how often one hears that lovely piece, just like all of his music, it 'wears' well. The 'Pie Jesu' was absolutely stunning as Sumi Jo sang it, and it is a pleasure for me to hear the selection from "GIGI" by Lerner & Loewe; not being a great broadway fan, I have always liked that specific musical. I think because it was well-done when I saw it years and years ago.
This disc is abolutely totally enjoyable. There is something for all musical tastes, and the conductor/pianist James Conlon does a great job pulling it together!!!!!
Sumi Jo- coloratura supreme.......2006-04-09
The rest of the album is enchanting as well as breath taking. I am a harsh critic when it comes to singers so I do not give those compliments very often, nor am I easily moved by singers but Sumi Jo has certainly done that with this album.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to hear her take of "Ave Maria" by Schubert which, while recorded many times over, would complimented her voice perfectly due to it's simplicity. "Sing low sweet chariot" would have been another great one to hear but as far as spirtuals are concerned I was very happy with her acepella version of "Amazing Grace." I was never a huge fan of "Amazing Grace" since it's been done a thousand times over but she brought such seetness and emotion to it. Of course I am kind of biased becuase I offically hate the "belting" version of this song and that's how it's usually done. It's nice to hear a simple, straight forward version.
My last comment is that it's nice to hear Sumi Jo sing less operatic pieces considering most opera singers are rarely bold enough to sing anything other than classical pieces, excluding Renee Fleming of recent.
Prayerful and beautiful.......2005-11-14
Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music.
Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have worried. In the latter she reveals a soulfulness that fits the lyrics perfectly.
The only track not worthy of this collection is Bernstein's Take Care of This House. I suppose, as it is a prayer, it was an obvious song to include, and Jo sings it very well, but it is just a very poor song. That still leaves 14 excellent tracks that, if you are a lover of good singing, you will want in your collection.
A spectalce of voice and vocalization.......2004-12-29
Never is there a weak moment in this incredibly beautiful collection of classical bleeding chunks and spirituals. I don't think you'll confuse Sumi for your favorite spiritual singer in "Amazing Grace" and "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" but she is magnificent singing the complete and incomplete tunes elsewhere on the CD by famous classical composers including Mozart, Richard Strauss, Rossini, Schubert and Donizetti, to name some of them.
She is in wonderful voice and fresh-faced for the Loewe-Lerner "Say a prayer for me tonight" and does an equally nice job with Susan Graham accompanying Leonard Bernstein's "Take care of this house" from "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". I'm not much for this kind of music -- I bought this exclusively for her rendition of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" -- but it adds a dimension to the concert that brings it into the realm of popular Broadway tunes.
This is a wonderful concert of familiar and not so familiar songs from a singer whose voice is eloquent, beautiful and rich, with significant range and span from PPP to FFF. Sumi Jo controls her voice well throughout the concert, giving everyone something to think about regardelss of musical preference. This might have been improved if she'd included a Beatles tune -- maybe "Elenor Rigby" or "Yesterday" -- accompanied by the orchestra and James Conlon's direction. But it stands with any similar collection by any singer as it is.

Known more for his film scores than for his full-length concert works, Zbigniew Preisner injects a good dose of his famed film score methodologies into this recording. Divided into two parts, Requiem and Life, this work is outstanding in its first nine movements, capturing soaring choral blasts that startle and hold the ear steadily, as does the occasional churning organ and the chamber ensemble, which seems to make far more sound than is possible. The Requiem as a whole is also stylistically cleaved in two: Life heads wholeheartedly into the realm of filmic composition (doing so in four episodes). Resolution is always on the horizon, but the musical tensions seem directed toward a visual conclusion, rather than any kind of sonic release or resolution. To that end, the music itself, especially early in Life, is a bit thin. Maybe it's the alto saxophone, which plays simple figures that get washed out in the cavernous audio. Or maybe it's the building march-like cadence of the "Apocalypse "episode, which seems to announce a particular character without ever producing one. Perhaps it's the desire to create mood without exploring the complexities. As film music, this is excellent stuff, easily capable of throwing musical beams on action. As a purely sonic phenomenon, it's sometimes too much, sometimes too little, and only briefly balanced between the two. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
If you like Gorecki and Part you'll love this cd.......2007-01-29
A Powerful, Mystical Experience.......2005-12-29
The first part features a highly unusual adult male SATB quartet, soprano soloist, string quartet, organ, and percussion.
The second part's vocal forces include an SATB choir, soprano and countertenor soloists, plus an additional voice sung on this recording by a youth. The orchestral forces of the second part include the large symphonic forces of a film score, and some unusual instruments for a Requiem including alto saxophone and cimbalom.
One of the features that make this recording particularly successful is the acoustics of the recording locations: the two utilized for this recording are extremely rich with reverberation. This reverberation sustains the long musical lines and fills the piece to accommodate the slowly unfolding harmonic progressions. Architecturally, the work's construction is solid, with structural pillars unifying the first and second parts, with a definite roadmap to take the listener on an emotional journey.
I am delighted to hear this recording before conducting its American premiere at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For additional information, call (260)426-7421 ext. 24.

"Silva Screen releases film culture European style".......2001-11-28
There are several stand outs on this compilation that need mentioning ~ "IL POSTINO"(Bacalov)..."LA DOLCE VITA"(Rota)..."Z"(Theodorakis)..."CINEMA PARADISO"(Morricone)..."PHAEDRA"(Theodorakis)..."ARMARCORD"(Rota)..."THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE"(Van den Budenmayer/Preisner)...and my all-time favorite "ZORBA THE GREEK"(Theodorakis), loved the film with Anthony Quinn, and the music was so inspiring, so earthy and festive, with a hint sadness reflections of daily life, with its ups and downs, will never forget the impact this had on me when I first heard his music.
Under the watchful eye of James Fitzpatrick(producer), featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic...conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine...Mark Ayres producing Electronic Music...so my "film-score-buff" friends, this is a keeper, make room for one of the most outstanding collections to come out of the SILVA SCREEN vaults!

Simple and beautiful.......2002-01-11
Lesdzek Mozdzer gives them a jazz-like touch in his improvisations, which prevents the music from turning into too sweat candy, but also lets the themes appear the more clear and fresh in their simple beauty (warning! some are earcatchers).
This is music you need no guide for, no knowledge of technique, history of music and biography of the artist, as it speaks for itself.
People who expect hard intellectual tasks, headaches when listening first, and proud membership in an exclusive circle of distinct experts when they got used to ('understood') a certain, 'difficult style' will not like this CD.
After all it's not pure jazz or demanding contemporary music, but something as difficult as simple, yet intelligent, music you can just listen to and enjoy.
I keep coming back to this one - what a great surprise!.......2001-10-20
I must also state that saw "Blue" and "Red" a few years ago but don't remember the music he wrote for those movies especially moving me. I'll have to give them another look/listen now.
Preisner: 10 Dull Pieces for Piano.......2000-10-16
And herein lies the problem. Preisner may be a fine film composer, but he needs the visual and theatrical elements of film as well as a larger sound world to create meaningful music. This stuff is pleasant enough the first time around, for a while; but a concentrated listening to the entire disc had me hoping desperately for even a single moment of true emotion or drama. It never came--the closest Preisner got was to sound for a few minutes like bad Rachmaninoff. This music is as filling as whipped cream, and just as nutritious. I found it quite telling that one of the pieces is titled, A Tune a Day--about which Preisner says "I am already grasping things. Just walking, just speaking, just thinking, just playing. I just know that I know nothing." When any artist admits they are cranking out a work a day, and they know nothing, alarm bells should ring!
This is music to put on, then leave the room or perhaps fall asleep.
Although these pieces are not written for film, Preisner has taken his day job too much to heart. This disc reveals the dilemma of a film composer-essentially he is an employee hired to write background music, not art music. The two should not be confused--this is the musical equivalent of wall-paper: it may be nice, but you really aren't supposed to pay attention to it! Preisner's melodies are all very simple and banal, they are extremely limited in range, register and dynamic expression. And although a jazz influence gives some of the pieces some rhythmic interest, they all have the simpliest of forms- primarily repetition with very little development.
I don't mean to say there is nothing of worth on the disc, and those of you who delight in New Age Music may enjoy the Ten Easy Pieces. The piano performance of Leszsek Mozdzer, is excellent; and the liner notes attribute some improvisation to him. In the one piece where the amount of improvisation is clear, Talking to Myself, it is obvious that the improvisations are the most interesting of the music. Again, this is symptomatic of a film composer's work--so often they simply write either the melody or perhaps a lead sheet with some sketched-in harmonies and leave it to their assistants to work out the details.
EMI's marketing department provided a short write-up of the disc in which they claim Preisner's music is like "Erik Satie meets Keith Jarrett meets Gorecki" I've heard those composers, and let me tell you sir, Preisner is no Satie, Jarrett, or Gorecki.
This is a disc I won't be listening to again--maybe I'll give it to my wife's beauty salon to play during aromatherapy.
I can't stop playing this CD -.......2000-09-27
