Singer Susheela Raman has a dual life as an Indian person living in England who grew up in Australia. And while she studied the music of her ancestry, she's always found a way to bring her adopted culture together with that of her heritage. She does that again on Music For Crocodiles, her third album. While this album has more English language songs than any of her previous efforts, she goes further the other direction as well, working for the first time with several different Indian guest musicians. It's understood that Raman has a world-class voice endowed with a sexy rasp to soften the edges, but the epic sound behind her is equally potent as it seamlessly integrates folk styles and electronics. The same goes for the songwriting -- percolating Indian tabla and catchy Western melodies gracefully compliment each other on such songs as "Leela" and "What Silence Said." As ethnicity is interfaced in the digital age, here's an accomplished effort that sounds Eastern and Western as well as new, old, and timeless. -- Tad Hendrickson
