Grammy Award-winning California-based percussionist Poncho Sanchez is a Latin-jazz superstar from the old school. His thunderous hand-drumming style is derived from Mongo Santamaria, and he performed with vibes master Cal Tjader for years before he made a name for himself as a leader. On this recording, Sanchez gives you danceable grooves for the head and the heart. Backed by a large ensemble, Sanchez travels the New World in search of Latin sounds, stylistically docking in the musical ports of Havana, New York, and New Orleans. He spices up several Afro-Cuban standards, including the festive Machito anthem "Sambia" and Tito Rodriguez's "Batiri Cha Cha." Special guest Chick Corea wrote the title track and he dazzles the ear with his Afro-Iberian pianisms on a furious folkloric rendering of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note classic, "Ju Ju." Vocalists Dale Spalding and Ledisi add the right Crescent City seasoning to "Going Back to New Orleans" and the Louis Jordan calypso jump tune, "Early in the Mornin'." With Poncho Sanchez, good grooves are just a downbeat away. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Cheesy Accompaniment.......2006-10-19
Segovia dubbed him "Esteban;" I call him "Tex.".......2006-02-16
The marriage of Spanish guitar and Western music is a natural one, and Esteban plays these songs with skill and affection. Since many are theme songs, they are not complete pieces of music and are often heard in medley form. I approve of Esteban's decision to turn them into full-length pieces of music; if you like the theme from "Maverick," you'll like hearing several minutes of it. Esteban's approach to this music reminds me of what Phil Coulter does with Celtic music. He places his stylistic stamp on the tunes, but showcases the song rather than his own skill. The themes from "Cheyenne" and "The Big Country" are particular favorites of mine, but the entire album is tuneful. I didn't think his 6-minute treatment of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" could work; he proved me wrong.
"Spirits of the West" isn't perfect. There are a few too many "coconut shell" hoofbeats and other synthesizer effects to suit me. (At the same time, I realize that solo treatments of over a dozen Western themes could start to have a redundant feel.) He sometimes uses fadeouts when the song would lend itself to a more satisfying conclusion, as "The Magnificent Seven" surely would. His up-tempo version of "Red River Valley", which resembles Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock", is entertaining but sounds out of place.
Notwithstanding these cavils, this is an excellent CD. Anyone who loves classic Western theme music will enjoy this album. Classical guitar legend Andres Segovia bestowed the name Esteban upon this American guitarist, but, based on this fine outing, I think he should be called Tex. Nice job, Tex.
Great Listening.......2005-11-13
As for the music, I am not a guitar player; I just enjoy those who can. To my ear, Esteban sounds great. If there are technical flaws in his playing, they certainly are drowned out by the heart and style that he puts into his work. He may sell insurance for Geico, but his music is still well worth your time.
Giddiyap!.......2005-08-21
Note: Don't be swayed by the one-star review preceding this one. To date, the only "reviews" Mr. Ospino has submitted to Amazon are for Esteban CD's: 11 IDENTICAL paragraphs in which he changed only the title. Enough said.

The first six tracks of this release could've been subtitled "A Twist of Christmas," for they bear the indelible stamp of guitarist-producer Lee Ritenour and his A Twist of Marley. In fact, his Brazilian take on "Silent Night," with singer Al Jarreau, sounds like an arrangement worked straight out of Ritenour's A Twist of Jobim sessions. Even with guitarists Joyce Cooling and Marc Antoine, his presence is noticeable. The other half of the album finds most of the artists doing their own thing, the best of which is the funky groove saxophonist Richard Elliot and keyboardist and co-arranger Jeff Lorber lay over "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Like a few of the other tunes however, the production suffers from the frightening trend of producers and/or record companies fading tracks prematurely in an obvious effort to appease smooth-jazz radio. It should be noted that the Diana Krall track was previously released on a holiday EP three years ago. --Mark Ruffin

Christmas Jazz.......2007-01-14
It Certainly is Pleasant Enough.......2001-12-12
Joyce Cooling's rendition of "The Christmas Song" is quite unique however, as are some of the other cuts including Richard Elliot's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".
Since this is a "Smooth Jazz" CD, the cuts are short and to the point (read: radio friendly?) although I don't think you'll be hearing the very jazzy Joe Sample version of "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", David Benoit's "The First Noel" anytime soon or, for that matter, Dave Grusin's out of place "Suite de Nuestra Navidad". Now that I think about it, this disc at times tries too hard to have a Latin flavor.
Overall, this disc leaves you saying "it certainly is pleasant enough", because you realize that you have heard better Jazz Christmas CDs.
Happy Holidays to all....

Hidden Treasure .......2006-06-07
His credentials are impeccable. According to the liner notes: "Craig Alden Dell, a 35 year veteran of the guitar has studied and performed in the styles of Classical, Flamenco, and Impressionistic, as well as Folk, Ethnic and Progressive guitar. Having studied formally in the Terrega School he is a graduate of the Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra at the University of Barcelona, under the direction of Maestro Emilio Pujol and his assistant, Hector Garcia. In the Classic style he also studies guitar from Christopher Parkening and received personal career guidance from Maestro Segovia on an occasion to have met with him in the late sixties. Craig studied flamenco guitar from El Saraste and has also performed for and studied technique from the legendary Sabicas."
The CD contains some brilliant performances of classical Latin guitar pieces that you don't find in every collection.
Very beautiful! Grab it while you can.

Venezuela-born percussionist/composer Marlon Simon is a veteran sideman with Jerry Gonzalez, Chucho Valdés, and Hilton Ruiz. Rumba a la Patato features bassists John Benitez and Fort Apache's Andy Gonzalez and pianists Ed Simon (Marlon's younger brother) and Luis Perdomo, highlighting the leader's skills as a composer of stateside jazz laced with Afro-Cuban rhythms. Simon's compositional style centers on singable melodies that overlay complex rhythmic signatures, which make for nice solo showcases. Alto saxophonist (and ex-member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) Bobby Watson delivers his Birdlike soprano and alto sax lines on the moving midtempo piece, "Ericka," and the Thelonious Monk tribute, "Songo pa Monk." The title track, a riveting rumba with a 6/8 introduction, is written for the pioneering conguero Carlos "Patato" Valdes and is brightened by trumpeter (and Eddie Palmieri bandmate) Brian Lynch's clave-blooded solo. On "Sandra Malandra," Simon melds mainstream jazz with Cuban rhythm, and on "Something for Carol," the Trinidadian calypso and Dominican merengue are brought together under Simon's sexy groove flag. As this recording shows, Marlon Simon knows how put together Latin jazz for the head, hips, and heart. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:
Rumba with Marlon Simon.......2000-08-30
"Marlon Simon feels that the flow of creativity stems from the suffering pain, and violence we are inundated with on a daily basis. It is up to the artists to consolidate all of these negative happenings and convert them into positive ones." So states Peter La Barabara in the liner notes. Marlon Simon's music definitely has a spiritual feeling that is undeniable.
Marlon and crew serve up a variety of rhythms: Rumba, Songo, Mozambique, Calypso and even a little Merengue!
My favorite tracks thus far are RUMBA A LA PATATO, SONGO PA MONK and HUMBLE AND INNOCENT. The compositions are complex, rhythmic and full of masterful improvisations by the band members. Marlon Simon maintains a low profile on percussion but makes his presence felt throughout.
This is an impressive first effort. I look forward to hearing more from MARLON SIMON AND THE NAGUAL SPIRITS in the near future.

Album Description
Spirits of Love is a new CD release containing twelve original world music compositions by the great guitarist Nocy Karkour in which he seamlessly blends multiple styles and influences including Flamenco, Latin, Jazz,Blues, Regggae, Bossa Nova, and even Arabic music. It is a great pleasure to find again Nocy's dazzling speed and virtuosity which we had already savored in his previous successful release Flames of Spain. What is even more impressive in Spirits of Love, however, is the new level of musical maturity reached by Nocy and his band, with an uncompromising focus on simple melodic lines and rhythm. The virtuosity is there but only as a servant of the overall musical ideas and feelings. Nocy's spirituality, raw talent, and primitive energy explode in each note. The more you listen to this CD, the more it will sink into you, striking unexpected notes and tones in your soul.Customer Reviews:

A true artist is always on the rise.......2004-02-17
Music Fan, If you really did not like nocy's music why did you buy his CD? You had the choice to listen to his songs first on MP3. Common sense?
Music fan may be 10 years from now you will understand what Nocy's music is all about in the mean time dont waste your time to tell the world how negative you are. Keep in mind that music is the voice of God and it is never boring. We dont have to like all kind of music but we have to respect the artist for there creativities.
I will encourage every one to buy Nocy' music. I cannot wait for his new CD.
This is real music..........2004-02-07
Buy his CDs. See him perform, he will amaze you! I can (and do) listen to his music every day and it's never boring! I can't wait to hear what he has in store for us!
Boring........2003-11-08
it gives you a slight feeling of nausea. I just do not listen to it anymore period. The melodies and lyrics are very shallow, syrupy, and pretentious playing catch up with current trends in flamenco and world music. So do not waste your money.
Buy real flamenco CDs or if you like this lighter genre, Gypsy Kings are still your best bet.
