Grammy Award-winning California-based percussionist Poncho Sanchez is a Latin-jazz superstar from the old school. His thunderous hand-drumming style is derived from Mongo Santamaria, and he performed with vibes master Cal Tjader for years before he made a name for himself as a leader. On this recording, Sanchez gives you danceable grooves for the head and the heart. Backed by a large ensemble, Sanchez travels the New World in search of Latin sounds, stylistically docking in the musical ports of Havana, New York, and New Orleans. He spices up several Afro-Cuban standards, including the festive Machito anthem "Sambia" and Tito Rodriguez's "Batiri Cha Cha." Special guest Chick Corea wrote the title track and he dazzles the ear with his Afro-Iberian pianisms on a furious folkloric rendering of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note classic, "Ju Ju." Vocalists Dale Spalding and Ledisi add the right Crescent City seasoning to "Going Back to New Orleans" and the Louis Jordan calypso jump tune, "Early in the Mornin'." With Poncho Sanchez, good grooves are just a downbeat away. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Album Description

Old west tunes-theme songs and old western songs.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy Accompaniment.......2006-10-19

I like Esteban and all, his playing on this album I like, but the cheesy accompaniment has got to go! It sounds like something my 5 year old niece put together on her keyboard. I am really disappointed because I love these old west favorites and was expecting more. It would have been a lot better if he had just played these songs like he normally does: acoustic guitar with string ensemble (maybe) accompaniment.

5 out of 5 stars Segovia dubbed him "Esteban;" I call him "Tex.".......2006-02-16

The TV and cinema Westerns of yesteryear featured not only memorable drama but memorable theme songs. Much of this music is not readily available, so, with trepidation, I ordered this CD by Esteban, habitue of the Easy Listening and New Age bins, and heartthrob of the Home Shopping Network. I braced myself for disappointment, which made my delight all the more intense. This album is very good.

The marriage of Spanish guitar and Western music is a natural one, and Esteban plays these songs with skill and affection. Since many are theme songs, they are not complete pieces of music and are often heard in medley form. I approve of Esteban's decision to turn them into full-length pieces of music; if you like the theme from "Maverick," you'll like hearing several minutes of it. Esteban's approach to this music reminds me of what Phil Coulter does with Celtic music. He places his stylistic stamp on the tunes, but showcases the song rather than his own skill. The themes from "Cheyenne" and "The Big Country" are particular favorites of mine, but the entire album is tuneful. I didn't think his 6-minute treatment of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" could work; he proved me wrong.

"Spirits of the West" isn't perfect. There are a few too many "coconut shell" hoofbeats and other synthesizer effects to suit me. (At the same time, I realize that solo treatments of over a dozen Western themes could start to have a redundant feel.) He sometimes uses fadeouts when the song would lend itself to a more satisfying conclusion, as "The Magnificent Seven" surely would. His up-tempo version of "Red River Valley", which resembles Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Red River Rock", is entertaining but sounds out of place.

Notwithstanding these cavils, this is an excellent CD. Anyone who loves classic Western theme music will enjoy this album. Classical guitar legend Andres Segovia bestowed the name Esteban upon this American guitarist, but, based on this fine outing, I think he should be called Tex. Nice job, Tex.

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2005-11-13

Mr. Ospino seems to have a thing about Esteban. If you look at all the Esteban albums on Amazon, Mr. Ospino has appended the same negative message to each one. Perhaps he is irate that Esteban isn't really Hispanic. But, if Andres Segovia felt like giving him the appellation of "Esteban", then I think he honored to use it.
As for the music, I am not a guitar player; I just enjoy those who can. To my ear, Esteban sounds great. If there are technical flaws in his playing, they certainly are drowned out by the heart and style that he puts into his work. He may sell insurance for Geico, but his music is still well worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Giddiyap!.......2005-08-21

If you enjoy Western music, this is the CD for you. You can practically see the sagebrush! This CD will transport you to the Old West with instrumental renditions of movie and TV Western themes. So saddle up, and happy trails!

Note: Don't be swayed by the one-star review preceding this one. To date, the only "reviews" Mr. Ospino has submitted to Amazon are for Esteban CD's: 11 IDENTICAL paragraphs in which he changed only the title. Enough said.

STOP! Hey before you buy this cd, let me tell you something: This is not a Spanish Guitar player, not even a Spanish like one. This guy is just a begginer-like player, he's harmonically and technicaly handicapped. Somebody has to stop this guy. Tell him the truth: You can't play! I don't know what did he do to get his contract, but when i heard this cd, this came to me: He's the William Hung of the Guitar, that maybe learned to play with the AKORDES tuition software. Not even him would buy this cd! I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH! PS: if you dont know who william hung is, visit his site: http://www.williamhung.net .

The first six tracks of this release could've been subtitled "A Twist of Christmas," for they bear the indelible stamp of guitarist-producer Lee Ritenour and his A Twist of Marley. In fact, his Brazilian take on "Silent Night," with singer Al Jarreau, sounds like an arrangement worked straight out of Ritenour's A Twist of Jobim sessions. Even with guitarists Joyce Cooling and Marc Antoine, his presence is noticeable.

The other half of the album finds most of the artists doing their own thing, the best of which is the funky groove saxophonist Richard Elliot and keyboardist and co-arranger Jeff Lorber lay over "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Like a few of the other tunes however, the production suffers from the frightening trend of producers and/or record companies fading tracks prematurely in an obvious effort to appease smooth-jazz radio. It should be noted that the Diana Krall track was previously released on a holiday EP three years ago. --Mark Ruffin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Jazz.......2007-01-14

We have always enjoyed the GRP Christmas recordings and were equally pleased with this work. The contemporary artists featured are able to combined the essence of the music style with the traditional quality of the holiday season.

3 out of 5 stars It Certainly is Pleasant Enough.......2001-12-12

I agree with the editorial that a few of the tracks of this release indeed should be subtitled "A Twist of Christmas," because they are straight out of the Lee Ritenour and his "A Twist of" Series mold. In fact, the cuts "Silent Night," with Al Jarreau, and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" featuring Will Downing (who manages to sound bored out of his mind here) are just a couple of tunes that sound like outtakes from the aforementioned sessions.

Joyce Cooling's rendition of "The Christmas Song" is quite unique however, as are some of the other cuts including Richard Elliot's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".

Since this is a "Smooth Jazz" CD, the cuts are short and to the point (read: radio friendly?) although I don't think you'll be hearing the very jazzy Joe Sample version of "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", David Benoit's "The First Noel" anytime soon or, for that matter, Dave Grusin's out of place "Suite de Nuestra Navidad". Now that I think about it, this disc at times tries too hard to have a Latin flavor.

Overall, this disc leaves you saying "it certainly is pleasant enough", because you realize that you have heard better Jazz Christmas CDs.

Happy Holidays to all....

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to your music collection!.......2001-12-01

I was unaware of this disc until I read about it in the December issue of Ebony magazine. It is so soothing and relaxing and a great way to experience the talents of artists such as: Lee Rittenour, Al Jarreau, Wil Downing and Joe Sample. Great music to bake and trim the tree by.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2006-06-27

I bought this album at Best Buy years ago because of the interesting art on the cover. I popped it in the CD player and was entranced by the sound, the beauty of the pieces. As a guitarist, I was awed by the technical fluency and Craig's ability to create whispers and storms on his instrument. This is a wonderful introduction to a guitarist or music-lover to Spanish and South American pieces of elegance and wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure .......2006-06-07

This showed up in my Amazon recommendations list. Although I had never heard of Craig Alden Dell, I gave it a shot and am very glad I did!

His credentials are impeccable. According to the liner notes: "Craig Alden Dell, a 35 year veteran of the guitar has studied and performed in the styles of Classical, Flamenco, and Impressionistic, as well as Folk, Ethnic and Progressive guitar. Having studied formally in the Terrega School he is a graduate of the Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra at the University of Barcelona, under the direction of Maestro Emilio Pujol and his assistant, Hector Garcia. In the Classic style he also studies guitar from Christopher Parkening and received personal career guidance from Maestro Segovia on an occasion to have met with him in the late sixties. Craig studied flamenco guitar from El Saraste and has also performed for and studied technique from the legendary Sabicas."

The CD contains some brilliant performances of classical Latin guitar pieces that you don't find in every collection.

Very beautiful! Grab it while you can.

I met Craig Alden Dell in the summer of 1999 when he was selling his CDs out of the back of his car at a flea market in Northern New Mexico. I bought "Spirits of the Latin Guitar" then, and it's occupied an honored and well-played space in our disc changer ever since. Dell's interpretations of classics by Granados, Tarrega and others are infused with a soul that only a skilled and loving hand can bring to the classic guitar. They recall a cool autumn evening in the Jemez Mountains - alive with the aroma of a pinon fire and the enchanted New Mexico sky.

4 out of 5 stars Virgin Ears.......2006-04-14

I just started listening to Santana and I am not a music buff, which makes my opinion all the more sincere. This album is great. Kind of poppy but I love Jin-Go-Lo-Ba and Full moon. There are african rhythms and they provide a great background for the other instruments. It's a great album, worthy of a closer look.

2 out of 5 stars No Dancing Here.......2003-10-22

I guess I'm going to swim against the tide on this one. I would give a 4 or 5 to virtually every other Santana album (maybe with the exception of a 3 on Oneness). As a guitarist, Santana is one of my idols. However, this album is just plain boring from my perspective. I see no spark of the brilliance I have come to expect from Carlos nor inspired playing from anyone in the band.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2001-02-26

This CD is very good. Maybe it doesn't contain a hit single, but it's an excellent musical statement of Carlos and the band. My personal favorites are "Spirits Dancing In The Flesh", "Gypsy Woman" and "Full Moon". The other songs are incredible, for example: "Peace On Earth" is good but I prefer listening to it in "The Best Of Santana Volume 2", "Jin-Go-Lo-Ba" is a nice remake from Santana I, and "It's a Jungle Out There" is a good song that was performed on the "Supernatural Tour".

I think that this album states what Carlos was pretending to do in the early 90's; achieving his goal in 1999.

4 out of 5 stars Me gusto mucho..........2000-04-21

Another great, underrated and almost forgotten Santana album,'Spirits'is in no way below the quality of'Supernatural';it features the same expansiveness, taste, and primordial power of that and every Santana album. In fact Carlos is the one who said that'Prince is funkier than Mozart'.

5 out of 5 stars Santana-Best Guitarist Ever.......2000-01-22

Carlos Santana displays his musical genius on guitar once again on this album. I love the instrumental "Full Moon" and the small hit single "Mother Earth-Third Rock From The Sun". The songs "Gypsy Woman" and "Who's That Lady" are well done remakes of the early 70's hits. A must have cd for the die-hard Santana fan like myself.

5 out of 5 stars This is muy fantastico!!!.......2002-11-28

For someone who has not previously known of Pancho Sanchez's charms, I was blown away by this fabulous latin collection. It is all encompassing: sensual, sibililant, rousing (and arousing!) and full of delicious latin flavor that keeps going from the first track till the last....

      5 out of 5 stars Latin Jam.......2002-03-10

This CD jams. Chick Corea is awesome!! It has latin flavor with some serious jazz. Buy it and listen to it while going down Calle Oche (like I do on my way to work in Coral Gables).

      3 out of 5 stars Standard Poncho.......2002-02-13

Good release, not much new. Except for the unusual lack of credit for James Gadson. Typically, Poncho's guests get top billing, but not in this case. Of course, trap drummers do not get prominence in Poncho's groups, typically.

At any rate, the material is diverse, as usual, but the fire is not there. "Soul of the Conga" is much preferred, in terms of his more recent albums. Also "Latin Soul" is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Latin Jazz.......2001-10-04

All I can say is that Poncho has a way with music. Latin jazz touches the heart and Poncho does very well. BUY THE CD!

"Poncho Sanchez has given to Latin Jazz what Ghandi gave to peace and tranquility. Total love, commitment and understanding that has moved the soul of humanity into a state of unity. Bravo Poncho for taking us with you." --Edward James Olmos

Venezuela-born percussionist/composer Marlon Simon is a veteran sideman with Jerry Gonzalez, Chucho Valdés, and Hilton Ruiz. Rumba a la Patato features bassists John Benitez and Fort Apache's Andy Gonzalez and pianists Ed Simon (Marlon's younger brother) and Luis Perdomo, highlighting the leader's skills as a composer of stateside jazz laced with Afro-Cuban rhythms. Simon's compositional style centers on singable melodies that overlay complex rhythmic signatures, which make for nice solo showcases. Alto saxophonist (and ex-member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) Bobby Watson delivers his Birdlike soprano and alto sax lines on the moving midtempo piece, "Ericka," and the Thelonious Monk tribute, "Songo pa Monk." The title track, a riveting rumba with a 6/8 introduction, is written for the pioneering conguero Carlos "Patato" Valdes and is brightened by trumpeter (and Eddie Palmieri bandmate) Brian Lynch's clave-blooded solo. On "Sandra Malandra," Simon melds mainstream jazz with Cuban rhythm, and on "Something for Carol," the Trinidadian calypso and Dominican merengue are brought together under Simon's sexy groove flag. As this recording shows, Marlon Simon knows how put together Latin jazz for the head, hips, and heart. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Rumba with Marlon Simon.......2000-08-30

RUMBA A LA PATATO is an exceptional first effort by Marlon Simon and the Nagual Spirits. Marlon Simon is following in the footsteps of great (Latin) Jazz bands like Jerry Gonzalez's Fort Apache Band and Ray Barretto's New World Spirit. The project is dedicated to the legendary Patato Valdes.

"Marlon Simon feels that the flow of creativity stems from the suffering pain, and violence we are inundated with on a daily basis. It is up to the artists to consolidate all of these negative happenings and convert them into positive ones." So states Peter La Barabara in the liner notes. Marlon Simon's music definitely has a spiritual feeling that is undeniable.

Marlon and crew serve up a variety of rhythms: Rumba, Songo, Mozambique, Calypso and even a little Merengue!

My favorite tracks thus far are RUMBA A LA PATATO, SONGO PA MONK and HUMBLE AND INNOCENT. The compositions are complex, rhythmic and full of masterful improvisations by the band members. Marlon Simon maintains a low profile on percussion but makes his presence felt throughout.

This is an impressive first effort. I look forward to hearing more from MARLON SIMON AND THE NAGUAL SPIRITS in the near future.

      Album Description

Spirits of Love is a new CD release containing twelve original world music compositions by the great guitarist Nocy Karkour in which he seamlessly blends multiple styles and influences including Flamenco, Latin, Jazz,Blues, Regggae, Bossa Nova, and even Arabic music. It is a great pleasure to find again Nocy's dazzling speed and virtuosity which we had already savored in his previous successful release Flames of Spain. What is even more impressive in Spirits of Love, however, is the new level of musical maturity reached by Nocy and his band, with an uncompromising focus on simple melodic lines and rhythm. The virtuosity is there but only as a servant of the overall musical ideas and feelings. Nocy's spirituality, raw talent, and primitive energy explode in each note. The more you listen to this CD, the more it will sink into you, striking unexpected notes and tones in your soul.

      5 out of 5 stars Consummate Artist.......2004-02-18

Does "a music fan from Las Vegas" live on the same planet? Maybe he/she has a personal beef with Nocy (or maybe is in competition)and is getting revenge by posting the ONLY negative review for Nocy's CD's?? Nocy is a consummate artist...his guitar playing is unbelievable (just ask the Lakers' fans after he played the National anthem). This album and his Flames of Spain reflect the mastery....buy them, you'll see.

5 out of 5 stars A true artist is always on the rise.......2004-02-17

If I did not believe that Nocy's CDs Spirits Of Love and Flames of Spain are full of power love and energy, I will have not wasted any of my time to write this review, and say how much I appreciate both of his CDs. Nocy music is refreshing romantic and sensational. His guitar playing is superb and unique.
Music Fan, If you really did not like nocy's music why did you buy his CD? You had the choice to listen to his songs first on MP3. Common sense?
Music fan may be 10 years from now you will understand what Nocy's music is all about in the mean time dont waste your time to tell the world how negative you are. Keep in mind that music is the voice of God and it is never boring. We dont have to like all kind of music but we have to respect the artist for there creativities.
I will encourage every one to buy Nocy' music. I cannot wait for his new CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is real music..........2004-02-07

To the true music fan, Nocy's music is pure enjoyment! An unique fusion of cultures and energies. He brings up a different kind of sensitivity and strength to each song, at once blows your mind with his guitar and transports you with his melodies.
Buy his CDs. See him perform, he will amaze you! I can (and do) listen to his music every day and it's never boring! I can't wait to hear what he has in store for us!

      1 out of 5 stars Boring........2003-11-08

This is a very boring CD with no staying power. It is OK the first time you listen to it. But by the second or third time,
it gives you a slight feeling of nausea. I just do not listen to it anymore period. The melodies and lyrics are very shallow, syrupy, and pretentious playing catch up with current trends in flamenco and world music. So do not waste your money.
Buy real flamenco CDs or if you like this lighter genre, Gypsy Kings are still your best bet.

5 out of 5 stars Spirits of Love...........2002-03-22

The songs encompass several different musical styles and influences. The more you listen to it, the more you love it! "Spirits of Love", "Mirage Sensuel", "Arabica" and "Take me the Way I Am" are my favorites but they are all wonderful. For hours of pure listening pleasure, get this CD now!
