An awesome album!.......2007-08-06
One of the very best LPs in the bossa nova field, Sergio Mendes made a name for himself and Brasil '66 with their first album for A & M. "Mas Que Nada" is an unqualified classic while "Slow Hot Wind" is as sultry as it gets. On the amusing side is "One Note Samba/Spanish Flea" which somehow has never left my mind, and Lani Hall was the perfect female vocalist for this and several more albums to come. This is a cant miss if you love 60's music, period!
Excellent .......2007-07-04
I found what I was looking for at Amazon.com. I had been hunting it for a while. I ordered it and it came quickly. It was exactly as stated and I am now happy. thanks
Like a small box of expensive and delicious candies!.......2007-06-12
The sound is the best I've heard on this album, with rhyhmic percussions that make you want to move. Consider Day Tripper, the Beatles tune, where it's lead guitar lines are transferred to a latin-tinged mambo type rhythmic pattern. Many of their favorite songs are here: Mais Que Nada, The Joker, One Note Samba etc. There is much more presence heard on this album than ever before, with clean and spacious highs and lows. The only negative comment I have is that at only a bit over 25 minutes long with only 10 short cuts, this is like tasting a small box of expensive, classy and delicious Brazilian candies. Give me more! more! Why didn't they add some outakes? But......those 25 minutes are pure ecstasy.
Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.......2007-05-13
I found this particular CD to be excellent to listen to. It reminds me very much of the mid 60's, the artist's singing is of high quality and the samba music sounds are great.
I recommend this cd to all people who love brasilian music.
Bossa nova brilliance!.......2007-03-02
From the frenetic opening song 'Mais Que Nada,' to the comforting 'Berimbau,' this record is a surefire winner. If you're new to Mendes and his five million incarnations of 'Brasil (insert year here),' then this album just might be the perfect starter, as 'Mais' is no doubt his best-known hit single. Of course, you could always check out the NEW version of that song on his new 'Timeless' album with Black-Eyed Peas, but if you're not crazy about the funky urban reinvention (as am I), then by all means check this original one out. It'll melt all your worries away within seconds!

Customer Reviews:
luscious............2007-05-24
I first heard this great album on vinyl, and it was wonderful. Lead singer Lani Hall was made famous, thanks to Brasil 66, and it's hard to believe that she wasn't born in Rio De Janeiro. There is a great fusion of sounds, here, since Herb Alpert joined forces with Brasil 66 producer and mastermind Sergio Mendes. Some of my favorite songs, here, include "Mas Que Nada," "One Note Samba/Spanish Flea," and their take on the Beatles' hit "Day Tripper." The group combines beautiful Brazilian instrumental with more contemporary jazz influences. I feel like I am sitting in a sultry jazz club somewhere, mojito in hand. I love it. My only qualm is that this beautiful, melodious journey through music comes to an end way too quickly.
Sergio Mendes .... meet Herb Alpert!.......2006-05-10
I read all the great reviews, and decided to spring for this album. After all it is the release that put Sergio Mendes "on the map." I liked the album for the most part, but boy did it have Herb Alpert's fingerprints all over it (and not always in a good way).
The Best:
The first song ("Mais Que Nada")is a classic - and is a great song. Amazing how realistic the recording is as well, it is if the band is right in front of you - until the studio fade out at the end, which was rather jarring considering how much the great recording can fool you. Still a wonderful song.
The Worst:
Second song "One Note Samba" which was one of my favorites on Brasil '65. It was sped up and jazzed up a bit (Herb) then it was INTERSPICED WITH THE DATING GAME THEME SONG (incidentally by Herb Alpert and featured on his hit album _Whipped Cream_). Yikes! Can you say cheesy? In the late 1960's perhaps not, but now it sounds really dated, campy and cheesy. This song, while not ruined entirely, was brought to the brink if you were anywhere near a traditionalist for Brasilian music.
The Rest:
There were some covers (Fool on the Hill, and others), and another song _The Joker_ that was good. Also had some other Brasilian pop-ified music. All in all, pleasant, but had Herb's fingerprints on most of the tracks. Some worked out OK, some DID NOT.
Summary:
Recording quality and mastering is absolutely first rate! If you have a good to great stereo system you will appreciate the skill in the recording and remastering that was done. This was 5/5
For the music, aside from the first song, the rest was average to cheesy since they Herb-Alpertized the album somewhat unsuccessfully. (Meaning his style and Samba don't quite go together in my opinon, after listening to this one).
For someone who wants Sergio Mendes mainstream-ized music _Equinox_ is a good pick. Pick that up first. Then get this one. It is worth it, but don't expect it to be as well produced as _Equinox_!
"The Joker is me". Brilliant CD...and the best of all of their albums!.......2006-03-31
Finally after years of searching for a remastered edition of their classic first album on CD, I have it on japanese import! The sound of the remastered CD is fantastic. We had the vinyl when I was growing up and I used to pull it out of my dad's record rack and play it in my room over and over in the late 60's. Over the years I have come across some of the inferior and short compilations of this band, but always wanted the full debut album on CD remastered in it's full glory. I picked up all of the other Brasil 66 CD's (all of which seem to be remastered now as a japanese import or domestic release.) All the CD's are great in their own way, but the debut is superior to even the near flawless Equinox. There are so many great tracks on the CD, but after 37 years (I first heard the album in 1969)my favorite track is still "the Joker". Pick it up...you won't regret it!
Exhiliration, elation, and fixation!!.......2006-01-20
I remember hearing this music as a mere 6 year old and it has stuck with me for the last 37 years! I can't really express to you what this music means to me personally. I have become a true Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 junkie in the last 10 years. I actually had to go and find this album, along with Equinox, and Crystal Illusions, and have them converted to cd in order to savor what I knew was going to be a true delight! My love affair with Lani Hall's haunting and gorgeous voice goes on endlessly. I have actually brought my students( I teach high school band), particularly my jazz ensemble members, into the Brazilian Jazz fold by playing many of the cuts available on sheet music. It's still delightful today and will be for many years to come. It's a MUST HAVE!!
A Super Bossa Classic Album.......2005-11-12
This is a milestone for Bossa Nova and for what was going to be known as Brazilian Jazz; no serious Bossa Nova collection would be a real one without this jewel by Maestro Sergio Mendes.
I've had the album for a while and I'm so glad to see the CD already out.
To my opinion, "Samba de Uma Nota So", "Tim Dom Dom", "Agua de Beber" and "Berimbau" versions in this album, are the best among all the other available versions ever. If you don't believe it, get this CD and verify it.
One of the best Sergio Mendes albums and by far..............

Excellent.......2005-07-31
Loved this when it was on an LP and lost it .Now I have it again and I play it every day in my car.
Lani Hall and the other vocalists.......2004-11-01
I just purchased "The Very Best of Sergio Mendez and Brasil 66". Fabulous! I have forgotten some of the lyrics (in Portuguese too - although I am not Portuguese) They gave me a yearning to want to learn the language. Anyway, I absolutely love Lani Hall but I don't think the other gal(s) have ever gotten credit at all for the marvelous harmony they created. I think the vocalist on Brazill 66 was Janice _________? I know Karen Philipp replaced her when they recorded "Fool on the Hill". Would love any info on this. Thanks!
shiny and still new sounding.......2004-06-22
The world always sounds like a wonderful place when you're listening to Brasil '66. This was their first album, a stripped down version of their later sound with just a jazz piano, a Brazilian rhythm section, and some wonderful voices. Mendes was a jazz musician when he conceived of this album, and it makes no concession to rock and roll other than a cover of "Daytripper." It's firmly rooted in the pop tradition right down to the cool album cover, in which the musicians wear suits and ties in a jungle setting.
Special favorites are "The Joker," a sultry version of Henry Mancini's "Slow Hot Wind" and the driving "Berimbau" which starts strong and only picks up the pace. This album is like a cool breath of fresh air. You'll never get tired of listening to it.
Finally!!!.......2002-12-26
After years of searching for this Cd I finally found it! Over the years I found several CDs of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 containing only "Greatest hits", wondering why this and "Equinox" haven't been issued on CD. Today I recieved both and I am delighted! Great music, it's a joy to listen!!!
One of my parent's favorite albums.......2002-05-07
When I played this album for the first time, I fell in love with it. My favorite cuts are Mas Que nada, Going out of my head, and daytripper.
