A thousand years ago when Paris and London were two sleepy towns, there existed three magnificent and unrivaled cities: Constantinople (Byzantium), Cordoba (Andulusia, Spain), and Baghdad (Mesopotamia). Mesopotamia gave Flamenco the famous musician Ziryab (The Black Nightingale) who traveled all the way to Cordoba in Moorish Spain. His genius and innovation in music laid the foundation for a unique music later to become Flamenco. Other influences on flamenco were the Byzantine chants and the gypsy eastern heritage (which is similar in many ways to the Arabic music and culture.) Titles of this CD are real life experiences and travels around the world. “Byzantine woman” is about an experience of secrets revealed by a Fortune Teller in Istanbul. “Woman of the palace” is a song of an enchanting night spent in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain. “Missing You” reveals an attraction to a woman in Aroche near Portugal and the ensuing months of love a la flamenca. This spilled later into the nearby city of Sevilla where the Moorish tower of La Giralda forever casts its shadows on “Nights in Sevilla.” The journey continues in “Nostalgia” for the streets of Paris. Fortune Teller continues the journey of NovaMenco.

Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

It's been a while since anyone did a review of Benny Spellman's work here, but as I write this I know he either did or would have celebrated his 73rd birthday most recently. I know that he worked a lot with Allen Toussaint, a legend of sorts in the music world. I was a youngster when "Lipstick Traces" was a hit and I still remember it fondly at about the exact same time Mary Wells did "The One Who Really Loves You" at Motown and a largely unknown group called the Supremes did "Let Me Go the Right Way". I thank Benny Spellman for a special memory for his song and the flipside "Fortune Teller". You'll enjoy the other songs in this package too. Easily worth the price.

For the last 2yrs or so, I have had the opportunity for twice a day each month to speak with him about his music, his family, his health problems and his continusly praise to God. We found each other because of similar stroke problems. My beginning with love of blues and rock (especially from New Orleans -my boyhood home)Benny's was always a favorite artist. In turn, he kept me fascinated for hours as he spoke about his career and the "inside" about many of the previous and present working during the early '50s, 60s, etc.

Benny still sings his written songs as he explains the meaning of the lyrics. Now I have rediscovered this great man.

Benny still suffers from a fall off a stage and following a stroke. He walks a little slower and he has to use a cane to help his balance so times. But the fire in his eyes burn when he talks about his work. "Why don't you send him a letter care of St. Joseph Church, Pensacola, Fl."

I listened to this album in the international section of a record store and fell in love with it. They were sold out. Luckily,I could get it on Amazon. The ryhthms stir the blood! Wide range of appeal, from a friend who is a musician and an acoustic guitarist to my young children-everyone who has listened to it has enjoyed it. I am going to get another of their albums.

I purchased NovaMenco's CD Fortune Teller here at Amazon.com after seeing NovaMenco live. To all who enjoy good music in the house, in the car, at work and in parties, I recommend this album. Every song is beautiful.

If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."

This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.

Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.

Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.

Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!

Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08

Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

Ferde Grofe's best known Grand Canyon Suite is presented here with a host of Victor Herbert music, both serious and light.

The five-movement suite takes a picturesque tour through the typical day in the southwest American desert. While not a difinitive rendition, this recording holds up well against "classic" recordings of yore, with even better sonics.

The Victor Herbert symphonic poem Hero and Leander, is also music which guides the listener through a story. This performance comes off pretty well; the music isn't terribly memorable, but it has its exciting moments and it is interesting to hear some little-known, turn-of-the-century, highly Romantic American music.

Also on the CD is a medley of Herbert's greatest show tunes, including probably his most famous March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland. This medley gives 10 hits from various shows, all charming in their own right, and showing early influences of Leroy Anderson and Henry Mancini even.

While the performances here are very good, and the music is keen to listen to, nothing really blew me away. Especially since Naxos has released some excellent all-Grofe CD's of his suites at a budget price. If you really want the Herbert, don't hesitate to buy this CD, but if you only want the Grofe, I suggest you look somewhere else.

This was played very well, but why do I have to listen to Trucks driving by outside the auditorium? With about a week of waveform editing this has become the best recording of this material I have ever heard. I record professionally and I feel that it is as much an art as the musicians performace. It could have at least had some post editing. 10 stars for the preformace and a minus 7 stars for the pre and post production work not done.

melodies for nostalgy.......1999-10-18

It was a long time ago, in Spain, I heard from a cassete this work of Grofé. The music struck me til now as something imponderable, sweet and romantic, nostalgic and strong, feeling me with the smells of the desert, but with a remarkable quality. It was 30 yers ago. I tried several times to find the music but unsucessfully. It was like to walk back in time, in a kingdom of peace and love. I am amazed to find it in Amazon.

Album Description

The 1953 recording features the spectacular twenty-six year old Leontyne Price, accompanied by Samuel Barber at the Library of Congress. The duo's entire recital is issued whole for the first time. In this recital the soprano and composer give the world premiere performance of Barber's "Hermit Songs", and perform Henri Sauguet's "La Voyante" (The Fortune Teller) and other songs by Barber, Poulenc and Fauré.

The Problem with Authenticity.......2000-12-23

The Eastman-Dryden ensemble continue their Victor Herbert series but not with a great advance on previous issues. Orchestral playing is efficient but somewhat lifeless, even mechanical. The arrangements are contemporary pot-pourris of tunes from various Herbert shows, while Teresa Ringholz (Eastman-Dryden's apparently resident soprano) is a pure voiced if uninspiring coloratura in the 'Marietta' excerpts. When will we ever get a proper full-length studio recording of this definitive American operetta? Come on, Americans, show a bit more pride in your cultural heritage. Until then, if you want Victor Herbert, you are much better off buying the issues on Marco Polo.
