Bob Mould realized his career goal--a rock & roll trio like Hüsker Dü, only without another strong personality to compete with him--most completely with Sugar's 1992 debut. It's mixed strangely, with little bass and lots of treble, but that gives it a buzzing power, especially on heavy-guitar songs like "Hoover Dam" and "If I Can't Change Your Mind." By the end of "A Good Idea," the narrator inexplicably drowns the woman he loves and Mould's voice assumes a frightening monotone. The only real relief from Copper Blue's intensity is the constant flood of catchy melodies. --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
Speechless, still.......2007-04-09
Every once in a while, an album comes along that is simply too good for words. This is the crowning achievement of the man who, arguably more than any other, inspired grunge, for better or for worse. (I lean strongly toward the latter, and the blistering "I Hate Alternative Rock" from Mould's eponymous release three albums after this one makes me think he might agree.)
Never mind "Nevermind." If it's not heresy to suggest, something got lost in translation somewhere between Husker Du and Nirvana. _Copper Blue_ is how it should have been done all along.
good stuff.......2007-04-03
Copper Blue is a great CD. It's one of the finest Bob Mould works to date and is a true rock classic. A must for all music lovers.
Complex, powerful, evocative yet rocking music.......2007-02-14
When I first listened to this CD I was amazed by the great music, complex wall of sounds, and intelligent lyrics. My music friends and I once declared that Bob Mould was god due to this CD. Listen to the complex guitar riffs in "Good Idea," or the calliope-like sound on "Hoover Dam." This music rocks, and really kept my energy flowing while I was working out on the treadmill, stairclimber and exercise bike. The only thing that mystifies me is why this cd never got the attention and recognition it deserved. Maybe the band's name - Sugar - was a total misnomer for such powerful music. Anyway, about a year ago I lost the CD and after accepting the fact that it was really lost for good, bought it again. Its great to hear it all over again. So I've bought this CD twice and it was worth the price each time.
Bob Mould at his best........2006-09-02
In my opinion, this is the best album of Bob's discography. Every song has a pulse but can all still be filed under easy listening. I 1st got Copper Gold on cassette tape after seeing them on 120 minutes. The tape was in my tape deck playing continuously for several monthes. That may have just been because I didn't have any other tapes. The music & lyrics from track to track are well-constructed and purposeful, yet, unlike Husker Du, they never veer too far from the mainstream sound. This music isn't for everyone, but it's well worth a listen.
If I can't change your mind (I actually listened to this).......2006-06-10
In fact, I've listened to this disc countless times, and I love it. I like every track on here, but I don't understand why anyone would compare this to REM. Some fans might consider this a timeless classic, I only think 'Changes' and 'If I Can't Change Your Mind' are the only two that don't sound like grunge...not that I know what I'm talking about. I just love the songwriting and the music. If Sugar ever got better than this, I haven't heard it. I even know music snobs who list this as a favorite. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Customer Reviews:
Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17
Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!
Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09
It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.
A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11
This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.
My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).
Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.
cd reviews.......2006-01-15
this cd was very good, much recommended
Poor Quality.......2005-12-05
The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Customer Reviews:
I love this CD!.......2001-09-13
I have been searching for a CD to accompany my balloon mime show for a long time, and when I found this, it was a dream come true. The songs are happy sounding, chirpy and fun, especially the souped up version of the PowerHouse. Comes with a burp in front that I could react to! If you like happy sounding instrumental music, this would be it!
Disappointment and irritation.......2000-08-01
This CD contains 16 tracks, some from Walt Disney "Fantasia" and one (track #11) presented as the recording of "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" from the full length cartoon-movie "Melody Time". Beware: it has got nothing to do with that enthusing performance, in boogie-woogie rhythm, by an excellent piano soloist (Freddie Martin? Teddy Wilson?) accompanied by a string-and-winds orchestra. It is, rather, a very banal rendition of Rimsky-Korsakoff's piece. Considering that I ordered this CD just for this piece (I have all others of classical music, from "Fantasia" in excellent recordings, I was disappointed and irritated when I tried to listen to the jazzed-up rendition of RK's music. This is a misrepresentation on part of the label (Sony). I don't think it's casual that the title of this piece, presented on the detail page as track #11 in the "List to Samples" section, disappears altogether from the following section ("On This CD"). If you are keen on Bugs Bunny and other rabbits, go ahead and buy this record. I'll be grateful to anybody (to the tune of $10) who can tell me where I can find a recording of the piece, such as I heard it on "Melody Time".

Customer Reviews:
My favorite Zucchero cd...........2005-07-25
I had the Italian version of this for a couple of years and despite not understanding what was being said the music and melodies were so wonderful it didn't matter. I loved it. Then, I stumbled across this version that has mostly English lyrics being sung and grabbed it up. What was already one of my all time fave cd's finally spoke to me in a language I understood and I was not disappointed.
As one critic here said there is only one song on this cd that is a dog-the Donkey Tonk...Otherwise this is a near perfect grouping of beautiful songs and enthralling melodies. I cannot fathom WHY Zucchero is not wildly popular in the U.S. You are missing out if you have not 'discovered' Zucchero by now.
One thing I have come to realize over the years of collecting Zucchero's cd's is that you will normally find at least 2 versions of every release. One that is pretty much all Italian and one that has some (if not all) English lyrics. I usually end up getting both. Sometimes the song list is slightly different. Amazon.com is a great place to be able to compare the song titles, ie: whether they are Eng/Ital and the list. There is one cd, his "Greatest Hits" that I think I have at least 4 versions on my shelf. In this case French is one of the versions. So look around and experiment with what works for you.
Give Zucchero a try!
regards,
Laurie
Donkey Tonkey , I mean are you Joking me?!?!.......2003-09-04
I dont know where they found this joker. This music is simply not good. Its like smooth jazz with this guy singing along to these ridiculously simple song structures that simply are repetitive and don't sound good. This music goes absolutly no where and it is very boring. A lot of this guys music is [borrowed] too. Also their is a song called Donkey Tonkey on here which really made me want to [hit] this guy, its like a kids anthem "Do the Donkey, the Donkey Tonkey" ...
Best album in my big collection.......2001-04-06
I was strolling on the Champs Elysee in Paris a few years back, wandered into the big Tower Record store and "found" this amazing album being played at many of their headphone "listening" stations. It was a must buy, must have, must play repeatedly album. There is not a bad song on the album. Zucchero's voice has always reminded me of another of my favorite singers ... Joe Cocker. So, if you love Joe Cocker's raw, gut-wrenching, spine-tingling, emotive music ... buy anything you can find by Zucchero ... you'll love the sugar-man, as I do. This is definately a DID (desert island disc) ... the one you'd most want to have with you to survive SURVIVOR!
Blue was written by Zucchero.......2000-10-02
only the english lyrics were written by Bono - it's an amazing album, incredible - a must have for every collection
awesome cd.......2000-09-14
If you enjoyed Bocelli and Eros, you will definately enjoy this CD. Trust me...get it, play it over and over.

Rich music and incomplete scores.......2004-05-05
The music is unusually rich and full, it will fill the room. My only complaint is the pieces are clipped. You only get William Tell from the "Lone Ranger" segment when the entire work has been used in cartoons. Other clips suffer the same way.

With all the recent consciousness-raising campaigns about the importance of music education, it's about time somebody spread the gospel at the preschool level. Enter the Sesame Street gang with Elmo and the Orchestra, Sony Wonder's companion title to its movement-of-the-moment targeted video Elmo's Musical Adventure: The Story of Peter and the Wolf. Here, Elmo fans giggle along as the furry red guy and Big Bird gab their way through a wide-ranging selection of classic compositions. The venue is Bird's nest, where the Birdapest Orchestra, confidently led by conductor Leonard Birdseed, tackles snippets of Mozart's Symphony No. 40, Paganini's 24 Caprices, Chopin's Minute Waltz, Haydn's Surprise Symphony, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and 14 famous others. During the pair's daffy, Sesame-style running dialogue, Elmo gets a grip on the four sections of an orchestra; delights in discovering that music, even the kind without words, sometimes tells a story (especially when the story is about animals, as in Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee); and, with great enthusiasm, sits in for Mr. Birdseed as conductor for a few performances. Silliness aside, the 2- to 5-year-old set stands to learn a confidence-building tidbit or two about the often stuffy-seeming classical genre from this CD. Caregivers bent on working the music into their kids' cultural repertoire can count on a less guarded approach to complicated (if masterful) compositions when they scoop up this record. And then there's the fun factor--as with most Sesame releases, it's through the roof, so the storyline's treetop setting couldn't be more suitable. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
we both like classical music now!.......2003-06-11
We found this at the library and my 4 year old really liked this. It's the only way we can both listen to nice classical music. If it's not in this format she is not content unless I get creative about listening to classical music. This music helped me do that. For example we imagine what we listen to like birds or clouds.
A must for your collection!.......2002-07-17
I also wish the pieces could have been longer, but I do like the way they talk about classes of instruments (like brass and percussion), and play excerpts of pieces that feature those intstruments. They also make sure to mention the composer before his piece is played. Elmo and Big Bird also find out how different classical pieces can make us think of different scenes, describe something like a bumblebee, make us feel a certain way (like Brahms' Lullaby), or get our feet moving. The music is fun and exciting, and is a wonderful way to introduce classical music if it hasn't been a part of your collection. Hey, it's great even if you DO play a lot of classical music in your house! We find it really exciting BECAUSE our daughters have heard this music before. (And mommy and daddy like it, too!) Enjoy!!
A great way to introduce kids to classical music!.......2001-05-22
If your kids love Sesame Street, but you want to introduce them to classical music, then this is the album for you. Big Bird introduces Elmo to the "Birdapest Symphony" and "Leonard Birdseed", conductor. They teach us about the different instruments part by part, and help Elmo to find the symphony he's heard once before but can't quite remember. Well, after giving us parts of some wonderful classical bits of music, Elmo finds his piece of music. And it's wonderful. The album is great fun, and my only regret is that they never play an entire piece, or even half a piece, it's only a taste, a glimpse. So it's a great introduction, but not truly satisfying. It's very educational and very enjoyable for all to listen to, especially in the car. But it's too short--I wish they would not talk over the music, and that they had included longer bits.

Not great, not bad, just different.......2001-08-31
This second Alligator album by harpist Sugar Blue has been subject to a substantial amount of critical drubbing. Foremost among to complaints are purists' remarks that it is anything but blues. I both agree and disagree with that statement. By no means is this your father's blues and there are a number of songs which require more imagination than I have to call blues. However there are songs that make the cut, even if they are a bit different.
There are several styles represented here. Sugar performs three tunes ("Gucci Gucci Man," "She" and "Whirlwind") which are best discribed as blue-rock, with sounds that seem to harken back to Sugar's days with the Stones. These may not be straight blues but they have pretty catchy riffs. "Gucci Gucci Man" is definatly one of the disc's highlights, sporting arguably the best harp work on the disc and an energy level which is never reclaimed until the final track. "Bottom Line" has a nice jazzy tune to it, with fine harp work. Two more tunes, "In Your Eyes" and "Listen Baby," are haunting midnight melodies with their roots in the blues and are fairly good, though the latter could do without the backup singers. "Bluepine" is a fine piano and harp duet with Pinetop Perkins and is bluesey enough to quiet most complaints.
"Lip Service and Lies" adds a bit of Latin to the mix. I kind of like this track, though I do admit, it was something of an acquired taste for me. It's far enough removed from traditional blues that it probably won't float well with everyone. Still, getting past the non-traditional approach, it has some merit, even if it isn't the best song on the CD.
The major falling point of this album is the track "Love's Sweet Secerets." This is irredemably tacky with hopeless horn arragenments and cheesy back up singing.
Fortunatly, the album is redeemed by a simply astounding version of Dixion's "Little Red Rooster." Sugar's outstanding arrangement of the classic tune may have even the most driven purist keeping this album in their collection, if only to listent to this track.
The harp work here is worth hearing. Blue has gained in versitility since Blue Blazes, playing much more varied harmonica. His melody lines are very cool and his solos are on the money. Particularly interesting is the point in "Lip Service and Lies" where Blue plays something which I believe to be either a low F, a bass harp, or a polyphonia ( If you don't know, don't ask. I may be among the few people actually trying to use a "poly" anymore).
Overall I have to rate this somewhere in the middle. I don't find it as terrible as some do (though the track classified as tacky really is bad enough to make you want to pitch this away). However, I can't call it the greatest blues album ever, either. Blue Blazes remains the better Sugar Blue disc. If you are curious or have really broad tastes, however, you may find something to like here. I didn't like all of it, but there are definatly some fine tracks here. Probably my best advice is to try it before you buy it.
No tradicional... ESPECTACULAR !!!.......1999-06-13
If you want to hear good blues...save your money........1998-09-24
If you want to hear a good Blues CD, save your money. Go get some Charlie Musselwhite or James Cotton, those guys play the Blues. I don't know what this album is. It definitely doesn't know whether it wants to be pop, rock, R&B or Blues and succeeeds in being none of the above. Just a bunch of contrivances trying to be pop hits. Nothing real about any of them. I'd give it no stars if that were a choice. Ugh!
Original authentic talent of legendary proportion.......1998-08-24
i encountered Sugar Blue while listening to Hiram Bullock"s ,World of Collision CD,playing on the Mustang Sally tune,at first I was'nt sure what I listening to,a guitar or what! I had never heard a harp sound like that before, and do'nt expect to again. This fellow knocks me off my feet! Every bit as Seren as The Great One (jimi) .

Sugar Blue is best known for his signature harmonica riff--at once bluesy and tuneful--on the Rolling Stones' hit, "Miss You," but he has recorded with everyone from Stan Getz and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon and Johnny Shines. The diversity of those experiences helps account for the pop melodicism, jazzy harmonics and bluesy note-bendings of Sugar Blue's harmonica playing, but only his individual talent can account for the pure, piercing tone he achieves on the instrument. His latest album, "Blue Blazes," includes his own interpretation of "Miss You" as well as versions of Dixon's "Back Door Man" and other blues standards by James Cotton, Jimmy McCracklin and Jimmy Rogers. The songs may be familiar, but Sugar Blue's harmonica solos are revelatory. Playing with virtually no vibrato, he plays fast, single-note runs punctuated by accenting chords. He feels just as comfortable in the underexploited upper range of the instrument as in the lower. He's a competent singer and leads a solid band, but when he takes off on a stratospheric solo on Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" or his own "Out Till Dawn," Sugar Blue is unlike any other bluesman before him. --Geoffrey Himes

A matter of presonal preference.......2007-05-07
I didn't really enjoy this CD, however, it is only a matter of personal preference. I know of others who give it high marks. Just didn't hit a chord with me. You'd probably like it!
Groundbreaking virtuoso, but probably only of interest to other harp players.......2007-03-08
Sugar Blue is without question the most innovative harp player since Little Walter--nobody even comes close except perhaps Howard Levy. John Popper certainly wouldn't exist without Blue and, in spite of his speed, is a much more technically limited player than him, never venturing out of second position. Unfortunately, Sugar Blue's solo records are kind of flat and self-consciously eclectic. The whole production sounds oddly slick and forced--there is no chemistry with the band, his solos are often overlong, and his singing is cloying. Still, if you play harp ya gotta get his stuff and study it--nobody can blast in third position like this guy.
interesting.......2005-12-18
In a world that craves novelty, Sugar Blue was that new flavor that caught the public's fancy. When controlled by outside forces, such as the Stones on 'Miss you', his chops can be fit into a musical form. On his own, SB seems more interested in dominating the instrument than making sure the music coming out of it is good. When did 'Miss you' come out, 1978?
Sugar Blue in Switzerland.......2005-09-20
Well - at first, this man can play the bluesharp very well and with expression, he is also a good singer. But as i am a fan for charly musselwhite and compare .. sugar blue has not the personality of the other bluesman. Saw him sev.times on stage, wondering he is for ex. using his handy during a song (when with louisiana Red). And at Zurich with G.K.Brothers Bluesband he is playing the harp such loud and instantly . so there was no space for the other (Czech) musicians. Sorry about, but i think, a real bluesmusician can work also a little on his personality - or am i wrong?
The blues must go on - anyway. Got bless you all Victor
Unique harp virtuoso but uninspired CD.......2002-12-29
I've seen him at Kingston Mines in Chicago and some place near DC - the most skilled diatonic harp player I've ever heard. The CD is worth having if you're a harp fan, but it feels like a showcase for his solos and not much else. Even those solos were tour de forces but not as inventive as he can be. It would be great if he could team up with a good blues singer/songwriter.
