Album Description
Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER
Customer Reviews:
Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14
Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.
Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09
John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.
Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19
If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.
Liked it enough to go through a lot of trouble to give it a review........2007-02-07
Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!
John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18
This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

There's a commercial inevitability to holiday song collections that can tempt music fans to mutter "humbug" under their breath. Yet while this collection (released in conjunction with the Tenors' Christmas Spectacular tour of 2003) is no less market savvy, in the end the trio's earnest, energetic performances earn their fair shair of respect. The trio's Celtic shadings impart considerable warmth to "Fairytale of New York" and other performances, but it's the range of influences they (also in solo and duet turns, all solidly backed by the Czech National Chamber Orchestra) bring to bear elsewhere that adds compelling new dimensions to these holiday favorites. Anthony Kearns' "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" may be solidly traditional, but Ronan Tynan imparts "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with some deft, jazzy drama while Finbar Wright gives "Mary's Boy Child" an unexpected Carribean spin. Elsewhere, the folk-classical influences behind "We Three Kings," "O Holy Night," and the gospel traditional "How Great Thou Art" span renaissance, baroque, and modern with a grace missing from the on-the-sleeve sentiments of the closing duo of patriotic warhorses--what would the Prince of Peace make of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," anyway? --Jerry McCulley

We Three Kings.......2007-01-16
The 3 Irish Tenors are a joy to listen to in the Christmas season. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
3 Tenors Christmas.......2007-01-12
This was VERY disappointing - too noisy & just the wrong type of music for these guys. I played it once & will try to get someone to take it off my hands - I love listening the them, usually, but this album is just a dud.
Beautiful and Amazing.......2004-12-18
When I fist listened to the clips from this CD on Amazon I wondered why on earth they put the patriotic songs at the end, and also wondered a little at the other non christmas songs. After listening to it several times however I realized why. They don't leave Jesus in the manger, but take him all the way up to today! Wow. To me that is totally amazing. There arn't many christmas CD's that do that, but I think it really balances things out. I really enjoyed the Drummer Boy, and all of the rest of the songs. I would definantly say that this was a good buy.
These Three Kings Rule!.......2004-04-24
This recording is a wonderful addition to any Christmas collection. It has power, charm and just enough reverence! Anthony Kearn's "Lord's Prayer" is magnificent! Finbar Wright's "How Great Thou Art" is awe-inspiring! After four years with the "Irish Tenors" poor Mr. Wright still must endure the ignorance of a few "fans", being constantly compared to John McDermott. Finbar took the "Irish Tenors" to a new level, as acknowledged by both Kearns and Tynan. I wonder how long "Ringo" had to endure being compared to Peter Best? Get over it people!
Another Winner.......2003-12-22
In their second Christmas album, the three Irish tenors have another very lovely collection of Christmas favorites and a few not so well known. The duets are particularly beautiful and, while I, like other reviewers, would have preferred an all-Christmas album, the American anthems are stirring and well done. My only caveat is the absence of John McDermott, whom I miss. His voice added something less homogenized to the mix and although Finbar Wright has a more operatic tenor voice, I would prefer McDermott if I had my druthers. Nonetheless, this a a grand Christmas album and I recommend it enthusiastically.

Ireland's world-class ambassadors the Chieftains seem determined to play with anyone who is anyone, regardless of genre. On The Bells of Dublin, they do an exceptional job of teaming up with the likes of rockers Jackson Browne and Elvis Costello, as well as songbirds Marianne Faithfull, Rickie Lee Jones, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and Nanci Griffith. There are many resplendent performances here, the least of which is Costello and company's raucous "St. Stephen's Day Murders." Like a banquet of traditional Irish fare with some updating to accommodate individual guests, Bells is the kind of holiday record you don't want to end. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
No music gives me more christmas spirit.......2007-01-18
This is a beautiful album. The Irishness and Chieftains-esque thread runs through it all, but the guest appearances make for a varied and unique listen. It is old and new at the same time. I love this music. Merry Christmas to all.
Great Christmas CD........2007-01-12
The Chieftains are, as usual, awesome and with the help of some good friends have crafted what I think is the best Christmas/Celtic CD out there. It came out years ago, but it has never lost it's flavor, timeliness, or sense of pure Celtic enjoyment. An absolute joy to own again and to listen to.
Hands down - best holiday cd EVER.......2006-12-12
The Chieftans are the only ones capable of making the global leap and carrying such a variety of artists to play WITH them. True it's a holiday cd and it's all you expect: inspiring, comforting, humourous and familiar. It's also breath taking beautiful. Light the candles and cozy up; I've never found a better cd for the season BUT! I don't know how some people keep this for holidays only -- I play the Macgarriles and The Wren medley frequently just for a pick me up.
I'm eternally grateful to the Chieftans for the musical education they've provided me throughout the years - amazing artists and this cd is a must if it's not in your holiday collection.
Already a favorite.......2006-12-06
I actually bought this CD because I am a huge Jackson Browne fan and he performs "Rebel Jesus" on it. Turns out that I prefer Jackson's rendition of "Rebel..." on his "Next Voice You Hear" CD MUCH better.
But as for this CD, it's wonderful. I loved it and I have played it every day since it arrived. Light the candles, and turn it up. Even my day care kids love it! I will need to buy another copy...so I have one for my car and one for my home. And a few for gifts for friends and family......a great CD!
Irreplaceable Part of my Christmas Collection.......2006-08-17
I love Christmas music. I'm one of these annoying people who can hardly wait until the day after Thanksgiving to play it around all the other people who can't stand to hear it until then. It's not necessarily a religious thing for me, because it's been true even through my atheist years; but more of a traditional thing associated with the types of European and folk music I like. So I long ago began collecting all sorts of Christmas CD's, both to listen to as a whole, and to combine with others in mixes of music to play at parties, or simply at home while preparing for the holiday.
I've had this one about fifteen years and would never part with it. In fact, I thought it was lost once, bought it again, and ended up with two! I find the Chieftains' and childrens' choirs the most compelling performances. The lone boy's voice singing "Once in Royal David's city" so evokes a blanket of snow with tiny flakes falling down one can imagine young carollers in Ireland. "The Holly Bears the Berry" has always been a favorite in my house simply because of my niece, Holly, who still likes to pantomime her importance in the life of Christ as exemplified by that song (a lot more fun than Deck the Halls, I am told, although that is provided here too).
We are given the history of the trapping of the wren, how people went from place to place to beg money to bury the wren, and then would dance for the people who payed to bury the wren. This is the occasion for glorious dance music that is hard to sit by and just listen to if you are used to getting up to a jig or a reel!
I am not as fond of the celebrities singing on this disk, with the exception of the McGarragle sisters. Their version of the French songs "Il est ne" and "Un flambeau" prove they are as comfortable with folk as pop.
But Elvis Costello is not, and he does not make is black humor sound at all humorous in the "St Stephen's Days Murders."
And I am not sure what Rickie Lee Jones' song sounds like, but it frightens me.
Nancy Griffith's session is fine, but it sounds like a Nancy Griffith session with the Chieftains; they do not blend as well as I would have liked.
The one last jewel, however, regardless of the sound, is the lyric written by Jackson Browne called "The Rebel Jesus." If you are a Christian of any stripe----strong, doubting, seeking; if you're not a Christian wondering why those Christians are so....you know; mostly hypocritical, this may be the song you wish you had written. I often buy Chieftains CDs and Christmas CDs for how they sound, not necessarily the lyric....but this one stops me in my tracks. I'm glad it's on this lovely CD.

Blending moods of reverence and quiet good cheer, Moya Brennan's first seasonal recording is a dignified, easy-to-like assortment of familiar standards and a few lesser-known carols, all well suited to her crystalline voice and the recording's prevailing themes of innocence and humble joy. Celtic influences and instruments at times serve more as adornments than centerpieces (e.g., "Deck the Halls" exudes a sort of Fleetwood Mac vibe), yet the disc's most distinctive tracks tap more deeply into Brennan's Irish roots, particularly the ethereal textures and vocal tenderness exhibited on "The Wexford Carol" (a carol Brennan traces to 12th-century Ireland). Beyond the tympani-powered opening track, "Carol of the Bells," the 47-minute disc embraces the season's softer, gentler moods, concluding with a lovely, unhurried version of "Oíche Chúin" ("Silent Night"). Here, Brennan--the principal voice of Clannad and the elder sibling of Enya--breathes the lyrics as much as she sings them (it's one of just two tracks sung in her native tongue), then closes by adding the voices of her own children. Pleasant listening. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
The Beauty of the Winter Solstice Season Incarnate!.......2007-02-20
I bought this CD without even previewing it, as I'm a Moya fan. Even still, I was blown away by the beauty of it, the simplicity of the vocal lines, and the intricate way in which the tunes are arranaged. This is not your ordinary 'holiday' clone CD; with one more boring recording of the same dozen or so overdone Christmas carols! All of the tracks offer refreshing new 'advents' into the wonder of the Winter Solstice Season. A haunting, blissful album!
This was the most popular gift I gave for Christmas.......2007-02-07
I was in Barnes and Noble when they were playing this and I was enchanted and bought a copy. One of my friends heard it and was likewise enchanted. By the time I was finished sharing it I had handed out 14 copies to friends, many of whom cited this as their favorite Christmas album this year! Absolutely lovely voice and unique, so that it's not just another version of the same songs sung by a different artist. You can tell that she is moved by what she sings and also that some of these songs are definitely being sung with the heart of a mother singing to her children and wanting them to feel warmth and magic of the Christmas season.
This CD just flew off the shelves last Christmas and I can see why.......2007-01-18
My order came in late, January, to be exact--but I'm still listening to Moya's Christmas CD and loving it. Moya's voice is one of the most incredible I've ever heard. If I were to be asked for a suggestion for future CD's, I'd like to hear more in Gaelic.
Great Christmas Songs.......2007-01-18
I love all this music by the Celtic Woman. I purchased this and one other Christmas cd. I also purchased the Celtic Woman cd. The most beautiful music.
WOW~.......2007-01-16
These ladies are so entertaining, whether you get to see them on TV or just listen to them on a CD!!! I will be lucky enough in May to get to see them in person! This CD brings back many wonderful childhood Christmas memories.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Wolcum Yule.......2006-01-17
The recording is fine . . . it just didn't appeal to me personally
lovely and unusual Yule album.......2004-01-06
Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.
The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.
Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09
This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

The Irish Tenors are an acquired taste that, it seems, nearly everyone has acquired. On Home for Christmas, John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan create a stirring seasonal follow-up to their extremely popular self-titled debut of Irish standards. On this disc, we get some of the best-loved holiday songs performed by the tenors in their trademark, Emerald Isle vocal style. Though the disc boasts a 78-piece orchestra, don't expect big-band arrangements on these tunes; if anything, these are intimate performances, with the tenors front-and-center. Each vocalist gets his own solo turns, but there are plenty of tunes featuring all three: "Joy to the World," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "O Holy Night," The Holy City," "Silent Night," and "Amazing Grace." If you still haven't had your fill of holiday music, check out McDermott's solo Christmas album from 1998, on which the vocalist performs an eclectic mix of standards and lesser-known holiday gems. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Christmas Music.......2005-10-26
I really enjoy this music. I like the quality and style of music presented by the Irish Tenors, and I like Christmas music. This is the perfect CD for me. I like hearing it from early November through the holiday season. I have given this album as a gift, and it was much appreciated. I would recommend it for anyone who likes traditional Christmas music.
BREATH - TAKING !!!.......2001-03-07
I have the CD and the tape of this item and I have also seen the Concert twice.TWICE !! The most amazing part of it is when Anthony sings his LITTLE JESUS BOY. When I went to the concert the first time I wasn't really prepared for the effect that song would have on me. On the CD & tape he sings with a Choral Group to back him up. EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST LINES OF THAT SONG !!!!!.
IT IS ONLY HIS VOICE WE HEAR, AND WHAT A VOICE !!! But at the live shows, he does the same thing, but without the music, and the effect it has IS LIKE A PHYSICAL BLOW TO THE SENCES. I think every one in the place just held our breath until he was finished. IT'S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUND THAT EVER CAME FROM THE MOUTH OF ANY SINGER I HAVE EVER HEARD. I play that one number over and over just to hear ANTHONY'S VOICE. I guess by now you know that I think all THE IRISH TENORS are great, but there is always something special about each of them on certain numbers they each sing. I especially like the trio doing AMAZING GRACE. They do it so well together. Just can't wait for the new "STUFF" FROM YOUR #1 FAN. JOAN WAY
Home for Christmas--A Masterpiece.......2000-05-28
Like millions of others I discovered the Irish Tenors through PBS. I promptly began looking for anything else by these wonderful performers and found this Cd. The music is soul-satisfying as the Christmas music is all sacred (the closest to secular is "Good King Wenceslas"). The arrangements are in turn glorious, tender, and sweet. "Suo Gan" by McDermott, ''Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "The Wexford Carol" by Kearns are highlights. Of the ensemble pieces, "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World" stand out. But the crowning selection is "The Holy City." We are wearing the album out and it's only May. We'll have to have another copy for Christmas!
Live From Belfast.......2000-04-15
I first videotaped the "Live from Belfast" performance on PBS.I don't know how many times I have watched it. Then I bought the CD (as well as the "Live from Dublin" CD and video), thinking it would have a song book, but it didn't. That is the only thing I could wish for. I am delighted to find the "Home for Christmas" CD, as I have been told by two different sources that it is unavailable. As someone else expressed, I am glad Finbar Wright was given a chance, even though I am sorry for the occasion that made it possible. I am of Irish descent, and their songs (and especially their interpretations) touched me deeply. I would also like to see a list of other recordings, especially of Anthony Kearns. Pavarotti and Bocelli are the only tenors I might rank as equals with Anthony for ability, pure beauty of tone, and control. I have tried repeatedly to access their web site, but it is unavailable.
Breathtaking.......2000-03-19
This collection goes straight to your heart. It's their voices, their song selections, and most of all their enthusiasm and heart that makes this albumn shine. I listen to it over and over and it still is fresh each time. The best Xmas singing ever as far as I am concerned!

Anuna shines for Christmas.......2003-11-21
If you're looking for a CD that gets to the heart of Christmas without the glittering commercial wrap, then you've found the right album. Anuna impresses again with its renditions of traditional, and some not-so-well-known, Christmas pieces. The group's sound is other-worldly, and the close, weaving harmonies will give you tingles all over. I only gave "Winter Songs" 4 stars because at times Anuna's sound is thin and lacking in its usual strength and warmth. But its signature sound really shines on "Away in a Manger," "Silent Night," "Riu Riu," and "Ther Is No Ros." Slide this CD into your player and immerse yourself in a talent like no other.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Soothing Music.......2007-02-24
I have to agree on Barbara Higbie's "Lullay, Lully" as being one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I loved the rest of the CD as well, and most of the songs fall outside the traditional Christmas music, so I don't feel odd listening to them the rest of the year!
Sam "Sam" stands alone this time..........2004-12-10
I've enjoyed all the Winter Solstice collections except the "Winter Solstice on Ice" - now, that's atrocious! No. III is one of my favorites because of the vocals. The version of "In the Bleak Midwinter" is one of the most purely spiritual carols I've ever heard. In fact I'm buying my second copy of this CD today because my first has disappeared.
No More Vocals Please !!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-24
I Purchased the Winter Solstice Vol #3 thinking that it would be as good as the rest, was I disappointed. Tracks 5,6,7,10,11.13 are atrocious, the rest of the tracks are good.I cant get to my CD player fast enough to skip over them when they start playing.I now sample every song on the CDs and dont take for granted that all Winter Solstices are created equal.People, please start giving honest reviews and stop the false advertisement.
Love, peace and music.......2004-11-13
The most beautiful and subtle feelings about Christmas lie in this album. A great combination of artist with a lot of coherence between each one's inspirations create this saga which is a masterpiece in itself. Every Christmas time I hear my tape with this and the 2nd part... it's completely magical and gets you into the real feeling and the innocence and magic of Christmas. I'll briefly comment each song:
1. Little Drummer Boy - beautiful version
2. Hopeful - Michael Manring - big hearted piano
3. Christmas Song - Steve Erquiaga - nice and peaceful guitar
4. Veni Emmanuel - Turtle Island String Quartet - wonderful chamber music
5. Christmas Bells - John Gorka - a folkie song
6. Lullay, Lully - Barbara Higbie - stunning ballad; magic
7. Trepak - The Modern Mandolin Quartet - funny song
8. Of the Father's Love Begotten - Tim Story - very religious
9. Coventry Carol - Paul McCandless - ooh... perfect harmony
10. Sleepers, Awake - Andy Narell - nice steel drums
11. Snow Is Lightly Falling - Nightnoise - absolute magic
12. Pavane - Liz Story - just nice
13. In the Bleak Midwiner - Pierce Pettis -- beautiful voice
The last two songs I don't have in my tape. This is one of the most beautiful and heartful albums I've ever heard. I never will forget it.
I wish all the WS CDs were like this..........2003-12-12
What I like about this CD, as opposed to the others in this series, is the inclusion of nontraditional vocals, rather than just instrumental versions of songs and carols. "Lullay Lully" is perhaps the most beautiful lullaby carol I've ever heard, and Barbara Higbie is WONDERFUL on it - so haunting! "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Christmas Bells" are simply gorgeous - very simple.
Maybe I'm just a folkie at heart, and love that aspect of this CD, but this one rates as my second favorite Xmas CD, right below "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together."

James Galway is one of the most successful "crossover" artists around, generally managing to produce albums that appeal to a broader than purely "classical" audience but doing it tastefully and with a musical integrity that has earned him the respect of classical specialists and critics. This collection of Irish folk music and popular song is a case in point, consisting of pieces Galway clearly cares about and that he plays with complete sincerity and warmth. The Chieftains offer excellent support, and everyone sounds as if he's having a terrific time. You will, too. --David Hurwitz

Irish music is particularly rich in songs relating to the celebration of Christmas. Cherish The Ladies, an all-female band made up of Irish-born and first generation Irish-American performers, has mined the purest gold for this delightful set. The 10 tracks are given sensitive yet robust acoustic treatments by a consort of top-notch players. Bandleader Joanie Madden's mastery of tin whistle, low whistle and flute has taken her all over the globe and onto dozens of albums. Lead singer Heidi Talbot's husky-sweet tone is further graced by refreshingly uncluttered phrasing. Mary Coogan's intricate plucked strings, Mirella Murray's lively yet mellow squeezebox, Donna Long's Cape-Breton-inflected piano and Marie Reilly¹s propulsive fiddle are all remarkable but each nonetheless meshes into a tightly arranged, flawless whole. The program evokes nostalgia for joyous childhood holidays long past but also reflects the wistful prayer for peace that a modern celebrant might offer up in difficult times. --Christina Roden
Album Description
The critically acclaimed women's ensemble Cherish the Ladies extends its theme of traditional Irish music to the holidays. On Christmas Night features traditional Irish melodies and carols like "The Holly and the Berry" and "The Wexford Carol" interspersed with well-known Christmas carols, including "O Come All Ye Faithful," "What Child Is This," "The Little Drummer Boy," "We Three Kings," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Silent Night," and "The First Noel." All of the arrangements are brought forth with a new freshness by the use of the group's unique Celtic instrumentation (penny whistles, fiddles, accordion, concertina, piano, guitar, mandolin, banjo, flutes) and beautiful harmonies, and then heightened by the inclusion of world-class Irish stepdancing.
Customer Reviews:
Christmas Carols injected by the Celts.......2007-01-10
I played this cd all through the month of December and really enjoyed it. I never tired of it. I saw this cd advertised in a magazine. The review of it caught my attention, so I checked it out on Amazon. I purchased three, one for me and gave the other two as gifts. The music is lively and soft when it needs to be. On Christmas Night gives a new sound and tempo to the old carols. It also reminds me of the music of colonial America.
Christmas in Ireland.......2005-12-10
I first became aware of Cherish the Ladies when Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops released a collection of Celtic music which features the group as guest soloists. I later saw a slide show of images of Ireland set to their music. It was at that point I was hooked on their music. The music of the group has an authentic Irish feeling to it, but it's not the same old same old that so many recording artist claiming to be Celtic produce. The ballads, jigs, and reels are authentic and original, and in the case of works that the group did not compose, performed in a new manner. The group brings these same qualities to its Christmas collection ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT.
The arrangements of the holiday music are similar to their other recordings. Some of the music is grouped in medleys while others are stand alone works. The arrangements vary in content. Some contain vocals while others are instrumental, and as always, the familiar is blended with the lesser known which creates a great listening experience.
Ireland may not be known for its rich treasury of Christmas music. There is the "Wexford Carol" and "Christmas in Killarney" but while risking blaspheming the name of Bing Crosby, I'm not sure the latter can be considered immortal. This recording demonstrates how Christmas music is truly at home in Irish music and listening to it can almost transport a person to a pub in Ireland during the Christmas season, enjoying the company of friends and quenching thirst with a pint of Guinness. I suppose I sound like one of the "all of the folks at home" mentioned in the song "Christmas in Killarney," but the music of Cherish the Ladies can transport me back to Ireland and this collection can give the listener a feeling of Christmas in Ireland.
Beauty deep and rare.......2005-12-06
This CD is simply beautiful.
The soulful beauty of Celtic music melding with rich and sweet Christmas tunes...the amazingness of Cherish the Ladies as a band and Heidi Talbot's clear, deep, soothing voice...ahhh, its so perfect.
This has quickly become one of my favorite Christmas CD's, but it is of such quality that no doubt I'll find myself listening to it during the rest of the year as well.
A wonderful alternative to "traditional" Christmas music.......2005-12-04
What? You're tired of "traditional" Christmas music? I can't imagine why, they only play the same 20 songs nonstop for 3 months a year in every shopping venue in America.
If you want something different that will still appeal to the traditionalists (we all have a few of those in our families), look no further. This is not only a top-notch Christmas album, but generally a top-notch Celtic album as well. Cherish the Ladies is undoubtedly one of the finest Irish groups in the world, not to mention one of the finest all-female groups! This album is a great collection of classic Christmas tunes, some common, some obscure, that will make for such a nice change come this holiday season.
The Best Celtic Christmas Album.......2004-11-19
I recently purchased this album and can't recommend it enough! I have been a big fan of Cherish the Ladies for many years but I'm so happy they made a holiday album because I own many celtic Christmas albums and this is the best yet! Beautiful stunning singing from Heidi Talbot backed by the wonderful harmonies in favorite songs of the holidays and ones that I didn't know but are sure to become new favorites. The tunes are interspersed with wonderful traditional music - Joanie Madden leads the band with her masterful whistle playing setting the tone for a great foot stomping album that I know won't be leaving my Disc player for the holiday season!
