Chris Franck, the multi-instrumentalist behind Smoke City, and DJ Patrick Forge are the brains behind Da Lata, who really became known in 1998 with the single "Pra Manha," which made a big impact in dance clubs. Building on that success, the artists created a wild album whose textures reflect the light, subtle beats and accents of Brazil rather than the four-on-the-floor of dance music. Dierdre Dubois of Ekova helps out with vocals on the opening "Binti," but most of the singing comes from the smoky-voiced Lilliana Chachian. Strings and touches of brass help the arrangements soar, especially on "Rain Song" and the closer "The Tin Within." Like the late Suba, Da Lata came to Brazilian music from the outside without the restrictions of tradition, and they both impose their own ideas on the bossa nova and samba, letting the groove slide sexily around and allowing the hips to do the talking. Close to perfect. --Chris Nickson

Erin McKeown's quirky, folksy music weds the intimacy of the coffeehouse circuit with the braininess of her daytime gig as an ethnomusicology student at Brown University. Accompanying herself on guitar, piano, banjo, and the odd sampler, this precocious Virginia native has crafted a winning album of original songs that range from the coy minimalism of "Queen of Quiet" to the genuine beauty of "How to Open My Heart in 4 Easy Steps." McKeown infuses her songs with a droll wit and a keen awareness of jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley traditions (how many 23-year-olds cover Rodgers and Hart's "You Mustn't Kick It Around"?). With its echoes of Gillian Welch, k.d. lang, Suzanne Vega, and the Handsome Family, Distillation is an eclectic collection of mostly upbeat tunes that play nicely while the barn is burning. --Bill FormanCustomer Reviews:

www.glasswerk.co.uk review.......2003-04-09
It is with lyrics that the 24 year old excels in the most. Subjects of death among others are dealt with humour and sensitivity, "....we both found heaven right then, you just chose not to come back...." in 'La Petite Mort' a country number with bluegrass roots, and touches on the topics of cocaine and roses in the poignant 'The Little Cowboy' where McKeown reaches Joni Mitchell levels of diva dizziness. The slim production of the record successfully brings out McKeown's ability to use an instrument both rhythmically and sonically. As a result of this the songs sound resolute and bright, with the result that the quieter moments on this record are at times the memorable and striking moments, especially on the quieter times on 'Daisy and Prudence' and the yearning 'Love In 2 Parts' which shows her songwriting to be strong and her delivery impeccable. Swing is also an obvious influence, and provides the jollier moments with a cover of Rodger and Hart's 'You mustn't kick it around' and the quirky 'Didn't They?'. Each song is intricate despite its simplicity, overflowing with invention and sentiment, and is sure to win the hearts of those who cross her path. With 'Distillation' Erin McKeown has proved that less is indeed much, much more.

distilled!.......2003-02-19
Mrs McKeown in her songs achieves the goal of both being distinctly modern, living up to her post-Bjork and Moby comparisons and at the same time old fashioned brining swinging 1920's jazz onto such songs as "Blackbirds". Erin grew up in Virginia and it was at Brown University that she found her unique gift for combining music old and new into her own hybrid style. Very difficult to pigeonhole in one genre toying with everything from modern pop, swing jazz and cabaret. She showcases here all her past influences and love of music and movies. While it's easy to get caught up with the comparisons it must also be said that this is unlike anything else before it, Erin is the first of her kind and it's easier to imagine that in the future people will compare artists to her, instead of visa versa which is a view shared by many writers like Dar Williams, "Don't let anybody tell you that Erin McKeown is the 'next' anyone. She's the very first Erin McKeown, and she's great."
Another extraordinary thing is the production, or lack of it. All of this record is self financed and instead of confining her sound to a soulless generic recording studio Erin and producer David Chalfant relocated to a farmhouse out in Massachusetts. All of the tracks were recorded here and very few have any processed electronic tinkering on them .The songs are refreshingly real sounding and gritty without the usual re-mastering that occurs. What you get is what happened and this, for use of a better word makes it sound real and fresh. The whole thing from the recording to promotion (self promoted from word of mouth and her website) is all very down to earth and grassroots.
Plucky guitar opener "Queen of Quiet" the shortest of the songs offered here, introduces unusual and enchanting vocal stylings not to dissimilar to US singers Kd Lang, but more energetic and uplifting. It also showcases her brilliant song writing with lyrics confessing her to be "The kind of lover that won't run for cover, what kind of lover am I?". Then "Blackbirds", a jazzy, blues style number is so catchy and infectious with it's danceable blues guitar sounds and lovable lyrics harking back in many ways to the children's rhyme with the birds of the same name. If you don't get the urge to dance to this, then check for a pulse. All the songs have smart lyrics from an artist who is offering us everything she is and while some of the best are partly collages of other influences as used on "Blackbirds" she really comes into herself with the more coherent songs like "The Little Cowboy" with the haunting images of roses and cocaine. While we've had ladies giving us distinct and original vocals before, Alanis Morrisette or Ani Difranco for instance, it's the combination her of striking singing and skilful playing of whatever instrument she picks up be it a banjo or a guitar. Smart and very cool.
To the slow emotional "How to open my heart in 4 easy steps". Erin flexing her songwritting muscles again and asking kindly to "Untie these strings, from around my heart" and sadly confessing herself as "undone". That description is appropriate for this and many songs that are so open and overflowing with ideas and emotion. The perfect almost-a-love songs to complete the amazingly eclectic collection of songs.
So cheerful and instantly likable, so diverse that everyone will find something here to there taste. Fans of eclectic musicians like Badly Drawn Boy and the increasingly famous Polyphonic Spree will embrace this album openly. Buy this and then buy her previous albums on re-release soon.

RHYTHMIC AND INSPIRING.......2006-05-11
A mesmerizing and captivating atmosphere opens the album: whispering, drums, moans; thirty seconds, and you are already intrigued. And suddenly, like a brilliant aurora, the magnificent voice of Dierdre transports you to another world of fantasy and delight. That is "Binti". "Cores" establishes the drums' reign; it is a song to dance while the sun sets. There is a warm delicacy about a song like "The Rain Song", a deep melancholy, a true feeling. Maybe it is Lilliana Chachian's husky voice, maybe it is the sultry guitar. You cannot help but adore it.
"Borboleta" always draws a smile on my face. It starts as a terribly simple composition, stripped down, almost acoustic. Then the violin crying, then the delicate drums, then the guitars murmuring. Seductive. "Pra manha" is a samba I cannot resist. It tempts you, it lures you. You either dance or dance. "Tregua" is exactly that: a moment of rest and relax.
Nevertheless, soon you are impelled to dance again, although this time to a darker, more serious song. It is "Inae". "Indo" is a charming bossa nova, with its exquisite rhythm and its seductive trumpet. Pure bliss. "Rio Vida" is a sun-drenched walk around Brazilian beaches, an impetus, a self-content laughter.
The album closes with a rather haunting, elegant instrumental composition. There is a certain sadness about it, like the lonely coldness of a night that is about to end. It is simply moving.
"Songs from the Tin" is definitely one of my favourite albums: a mixture of passion, sensuality and rhythm. It is a celebration of music, a moment of warmth, a catharsis. It is the album that you will love.

Album Description
Micho Russell (1915-1994) of Doolin, County Clare was an Irish national treasure. A farmer who became a performer during the folk music revival of the 1960s, Micho was as at home on stage as he was in front of his own turf fire. His vast repertoire of beautiful old tunes, personal warmth and utterly unique approach to playing the tin whistle won him a loyal and enthusiastic following wherever he went.Ireland's Whistling Ambassador captures the magic of Micho Russell's music and takes the listener on a journey to the very roots of Irish music. The CD features studio, concert and field recordings made by Edward Haber and Bill Ochs between 1990 and 1993. Ireland's Whistling Ambassador was nominated for Best Celtic Album of the Year in the 1995 NAIRD Indie Awards and was included on the "Best of 1995 Lists" of both The Irish Times and Irish Echo newspapers.
The album's running time is 49 minutes. A half-hour companion video, also titled Ireland's Whistling Ambassador, is available. Aside from five minutes of shared material, the audio and video formats are completely different from each other.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellanCustomer Reviews:

More to the point, Morris sings (as she always does) as if she means every single word. So Kiri's rendition (say) of "Look for the silver lining" is perhaps better sung but that of Morris is more believable. Frankly I would recommend both albums, but this would be the one of choice.

This new combo from Los Angles, California writes songs that run the gamut... from Brill Building pop to Tin Pan Alley; roots music to indie pop. It's a hodgepodge of styles that collectively make up what is Biirdie.Customer Reviews:
Stunning debut.......2006-04-26
With that said, trying to describe Biirdie's MKTD is almost pointless. One can toss out phrases like "chamber pop" and drop the dreaded Brian Wilson influence and be completely accurate, but in the end this album is about the songs, not the sound. It's extremely refreshing to hear a simple pop album that doesn't try to evoke the classic pop of the Beatles or the Beach Boys or Big Star, nor does it tread in the indie cesspool of new bands trying to ape the Strokes or the Shins (whom I both love).
Completely free of ironic posturing, Biirdie has produced a magnificent debut full of memorable melodies and homespun TLC that deserves a wider audience. One of the top 10 releases of 2005.

From Pop Matters.......2005-05-10
You can really feel the love that has gone into the making of this album, which was recorded in Flamm's native Florida, in and around his new home of L.A. and quite a few points in between. It's as honest a record as you're going to hear, as it documents Flamm's travels across the country, touching on universal themes such as love (or more importantly, the loss of love), regret, the restlessness that comes with losing one's direction, and ultimately a glimpse at arriving at some sort of personal realization and redemption. It's one of the few albums that gives a voice to all the little in-between stuff that occupies our lives most of the time; the grey that divides the black and white, or the things that we just can't seem to put our finger on, much less verbally explain to each other. Biirdie are adept at occupying this ground and giving it a definitive shape, all the while delivering music that is constantly fresh yet still somewhat familiar sounding.
Heavy? Well yeah, but Morning Kills the Dark manages to convey these sometimes awkward emotions in the most straightforward and personal way, avoiding the wallowing that too often accompanies this type of subject matter. Flamm, along with singer Kala Savage (sister of The Wonder Years' Fred Savage for all you music trivia buffs) and drummer Richard Gowen, have crafted some exquisite harmonic melodies to wrap around the visual lyrics, recalling everything from the Beach Boys to Brill Building pop to Ben Folds with a dash of The Velvet Underground and Burt Bacharach thrown in for good measure.
Morning Kills the Dark is divided into a "Morning Side" and a "Dark Side", with the more experimental fifth track, "Hotel Piano", (with its Pink Floyd-like elements) acting as a buffer between the two conflicting sides. Oddly enough it's the supposed "Dark Side" that is the poppier and more streamlined of the two, with its accessible melodies and simpler production style making it an increasingly satisfying listen to my ears. "I Got You (On My Mind)" cleverly evokes Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now" with its "love, sweet love" line, and the blend of Framm's and Savage's voices is a little slice of pop heaven. Savage is a stronger presence on these later tunes, which shine brighter because of it. Her vocal on "I'm Going to Tell You Something" is especially sublime and sexy, and the natural interplay between her and Framm is again evident on the excellent "To Know That You Need Me".
The promise of great things to come is hard to ignore here, and Jared Flamm has been making music long enough to realize that he's onto something special with Biirdie. The three members seemingly blend effortlessly as they wind their way through the 10 tracks on Morning Kills the Dark, and while it's clear that this is essentially Flamm's vehicle right now, the others aren't there merely to serve his ideas. Savage and Gowen add their own distinctive stamp to the songs, and Flamm is smart enough to acknowledge this and just let the songs develop naturally.
This is a great album to curl up with on a rainy day, and it just seems to get stronger and deeper with every listen. While the earlier tracks tend to overreach a bit, with their ambitious arrangements sometimes falling just shy of the mark, Morning Kills the Dark is still a fine debut album from a band that will hopefully be laying down the soundtrack to our lives for many years to come.
- 6 April 2005
From Glorious Noise, March 2005.......2005-05-10
The magnificent debut Morning Kills the Dark is divided into two five-track parts - the "Morning Side" and the "Dark Side." As one might expect, the "Morning Side" is exuberant and playful, holding promise and hope for the future in regards to things like friendship, love, and the places we call home. The "Dark Side," conversely, feels somber and melancholy, and dwells on the more trying realities of much of the same subject matter.
From the rise of dawn to the fall of dusk, Morning Kills the Dark features stunning vocal harmonies, lush melodies, and bright instrumentation. Its music fills the air like a warm haze, gently easing the listener down to rest in a fog of auditory anesthesia. But this calm is mated to exhilaration, as in a dreamt view from above. The album's most singular moments haunt like a new love: "To Know That You Need Me" - the first time that I heard it, I wrote down "Jesus this song is beautiful;" "The Other Side of Sunset" - opens with a spiritual high/low vocal harmony over patiently pacing piano chords; "I Got You (On My Mind)" - through creatively sparse guitar, synth, and drum fills, the up-and-down melody is never lonely, but never lost; "California is Waiting" - "I'm going to California from this little Florida town / From Hollywood to Silverlake, I'm Los Angeles bound / With tons of cars and five-pointed stars on every sidewalk street / What California doesn't have is you / You and me," Flamm sings with the weariness of two thousand miles in his voice.
Not since Pet Sounds have I heard a pop album with so much orchestrated gorgeousness, so much emotional and aural appeal, so much genuine sentiment. If that classic Beach Boys album is a symphony to God, Morning Kills the Dark is a symphony to life. And it's no less powerful to behold.
