Album Description

This first collaboration CD from acoustic guitarist Michael Mandrell and multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer is a mythic instrumental journey. As a "Yoga Meditations" soundtrack, the album transports the listener into both the faraway lands of ancient India - through the soulful sounds of the esraj, tamboura and tabla - and the mystical Celtic landscape with lyrical splashes of acoustic guitar. From this timeless inner landscape, listeners are invited to travel into the spontaneous journey of the heart that is accessed through yoga and meditation.

ANJALI has recently been featured on Echoes, syndicated on over 175 public radio stations around North America.

I just heard portions from this CD on NPR's Echoes program on my way to work on a cold dreary Saturday morning and the music by these guys made my day - if you need something to lift your spirits, transport you to a place of peace and encourage you to appreciate the beauty around you, this is the prescription you need. Very highly recommended.

A Wonderful Collection.......2002-01-07

This collection of music with a common theme of India came to me from New Earth Records without much of an explanation. But I put the CD on and allowed it to speak for itself. And I was impressed enough to write this review.

This collection contains artists who are well known within the Ambient field as well as others who are not. James Asher, Al Gromer Khan, Deuter and Osho are just a few of the better know artists that are in this collection. The common theme is India.

From the opening of James Asher's soft and seductive "Red Desert" to the strings and vigor of Prem Joshua's "New Kafi", the flavor of India is fresh and alive. James Asher has a second track called "Further East" with percussion and rhythms that will make you dance in your chair.

Chinmaya Dunster and Vidroha Jami offer us "Wandering Way", a string piece with a catchy tune and lots of the flavor of a soft Indian night.

Music from the World of Osho offers a piece called "Namaste", another soft Indian piece that has wonderful guitar work as well as traditional Indian instruments.

Al Gromer Khan's piece is "Agori Dance", a rather darker piece, more like a tiger walking in the forest at night. Very silky and very rhythm based, it flows like a dark river.

Ustad Usman Khan's offering of "Raga Hansadhwani" is much more traditional, a Raga piece that gives you the full flavor of this style of Indian music at its finest. A true traditional Raga, with all the melding and blending and rhythm this music is famous for.

Hariprasad Chaurasia gives us a more subtle piece called "Indian Folklore" which is very traditional sounding yet has very gently inflected jazz tones. A nice original mix and well done.

Namaste has a vocal driven cut called "Gayatri Mantra" with wonderful harmonies and vivid tones. Again, traditional in flavor and gives another perspective on Indian music.

Finally, Deuter performs "Sunlight Dancing", a short but bright piece of flute and drums with an electronic background that does not distract but rather fills in the piece.

World music is a small pocket of Ambient music. This CD gives you a taste of the music of India as presented by both the traditional artists and also those who are not so traditional but still find the heart of India in their music. A good collection for those who enjoy the sounds of India and a good introduction to New Earth Records.

If you like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan..........2004-03-07

then you may forget all about him once you have heard this CD. Abida Parveen is one of the few females singers of Sufi music, but that is not what makes her so special. Her voice is incredibly expressive, with a beautiful, full timbre. I could go on and on with the superlatives about this great artist, but just take my word for it. This CD is an absolute must for any serious listener of music, regardless of genre.

Stellar performance - must in collection.......2005-06-04

I happen to get a copy of this CD in local store here. It is something not to be missed in the collection. A live recording and a good system will make you feel as if you are listening it live. CD starts with raag Bihag in slow alaap style and then joined in by pakhawaj and tabla. The last track has a folk music. Exellent work of recording and performance.

Songs of the Baul mix Hindu and Islamic mysticism........2005-07-10

Bauls are Bengali religious minstrels who take religious elements from Hinduism, Tantric Buddhism, and Sufi Islam and sing devotional songs of their own tradition.

This mix of mysticism is unique, in fact the word "Baul" means "wind" and implies madness. The mix of Hindu and Muslim is one cause for naming these religious as crazy--in a land where Muslim and Hindu are often at odds.

The songs are played on the ektara (one-stringed lute), dougi (small, hand-held, drum), dutara (four-stringed lute), kol (two-skinned drum), bamboo flute, cymbals, and bells worn on the ankles of the singers.

These are not for the person looking for jolly Bollywood tunes. Anyone interested in folk music and anthropology as well as Eastern religion will find these fascinating.
