For some strange reason, very few MCs have managed to display their comedic abilities on the mic. Not so Akinyele, who flips the tip in different directions depending on his mood; with a roughneck voice and a delivery akin to Busta Rhymes's (and the remarkable vocal agility to ape Biz Markie when the occasion calls for it), Ak manages to have it both ways. While he does a nice job on this EP's straight-up rap songs, it's the title cut that distinguishes this CD: "Put It in Your Mouth" is, easily, the lewdest hip-hop song out there. An ode to oral sex of all varieties, it's the type of thing Redd Foxx would be doing if he had been born at the right time; that it's also an insanely melodic single with a singable chorus makes it a must for parties. --Randy Silver

To the douche that didn't like this album, stop searching through your neices files! What are you looking for anyway - pictures of her nude?? That's perverted man. Anyway, here's to free speech!!

1 out of 5 stars It's sad that the public wants this.......2006-01-19

After finding this on my niece's computer, I had to find out why somebody had to sing such raunchy lyrics. This world is about so much more than men forcing women to do what they want. Now they are singing about it, and calling it music? This is pure trash, and if you like this, then this society is in BIG trouble. Don't put any more money into this man's pocket. I would spend $100 to prevent this from entering a child's ears.

4 out of 5 stars good EP.......2004-11-04

Akinyele delivers a good 5 song, 21 minute EP. If you have a soft stomach this ain't for you. Really isn't a weak point on the CD. He says some lines that'll make Larry Flynt blush. Some of the songs on here are gangser type songs and some are just about pu*sy. A good EP to have (plus it should be rather cheap) in your collection if this type of rap is for you. Production is by 5 different people, Chris Forte, Dr. Butcher, DJ Enuff, Frankie Cutlass, and EZ elpee (each do 1 song). It has 1 classics, 2 are ok and the other 2 are good.

#1 - 10 (classic song about oral sex - f/ Kia Jeffries)
#2 - 7.5 (gangsta sh*t about robberies)
#3 - 8 (f/ Complexsion)
#4 - 9.5 (f/ Complexsion - about not paying for pus*y)
#5 - 7 (Thug Sh*t)

4 out of 5 stars I'm glad someone remembers how to ROCK!.......2006-12-16

Recently the local classic rock radio station here in Atlanta changed its format so that it now only plays modern rock, which essentially means an endless loop of Disturbed, Korn, Nickelback, and Linkin Park. What exactly does this have to do with Bullets and Octane's latest album In the Mouth of the Young? Just this: if I have a radio station that is supposed to be dedicated to playing new "rock", why in the hell do I have to keep hunting on my own for bands that actually ROCK?

I'm mainly a metal guy, but there are times when only a good straightforward hard rock album will do. I don't want emo or nu-metal or whatever-core. I want loud, fast, heavy ROCK. I want bands like Brand New Sin, Fireball Ministry, Black Stone Cherry, the Quill, and this band, Bullets and Octane. I took a chance on this album at my local used CD store based largely on the album cover, which has to be the coolest cover in just about forever. In the Mouth of the Young hits you like a heart attack from the very first notes of "Going Blind" and never lets up until the album is over. To my ears, Bullets and Octane sounds like Social Distortion meets Motorhead meets a nail-spiked baseball bat. For all the speed and aggression, there is still that underlying sense of melody that keeps you engaged and able to sing (yell) along with the songs.

This is good stuff, people. It's the kind of no-nonsense ROCK that you just can't seem to find these days. This is the kind of real ROCK that modern rock radio should be playing, but instead will completely ignore unless someone starts rapping over the album or whining about how g*ddamn melancholy they are.

5 out of 5 stars Without Bullets and Octane, what's left to sin for? .......2006-11-18

Okay. I have a little confession for everyone. I'm not a long-time fan of the band... hell, I only heard about them a couple of days before Family Values Tour rolled into Washington D.C. because I was offered a ticket to see one of my all-time favorite bands, Dir en grey. And actually, the members of Dir en grey are best friends with Bullets and Octane so I was willing to give them a listen, although I was doubtful of 3/4ths of the bands at FVT, given that their headliners were KoRn and Deftones. Which I dislike both of them, except for the fact that Jonathan Davis actually recognized true talent with Dir en grey and invited them on. Anyway. I was disillusioned already at the horrible performance of Walls of Jericho and was contemplating leaving the Pavillion until Dir en grey hit the stage until I heard the opening riffs of "Save Me Sorrow." And I sat straight up in my seat in awe. They were fantastic. They sounded so together and professional, yet so raw and intense. I fell in love instantly. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet them that day (because I spent the money to meet Dir en grey) but they stuck in my mind. My boyfriend then bought me the album and I fell in love with every song on the album. They're raw, gritty, yet melodic and polished. You know that they have been playing together for a while with the sync they have together. I'm not going to sit here and detail critique the album for you... because that'll ruin the greatness of it. But take it from someone who tends to be a music elitist and turns her nose up at many bands and artists... and is a classical musician herself... if I sat straight up in my seat and wanted to buy their album instantly, they're definitely worth a listen at least.

4 out of 5 stars Plain And Simple: It Rocks........2006-10-27

Bullets And Octane may not be the most original band to come out this decade, but with "In The Mouth Of The Young" (the band's second album), there is a band on display who knows how to rock like the old school. It's rough around the edges, it's abrasive, loud and in your face. Together with Helmet mainman, Paige Hamilton, working as producer, these guys have no doubt delivered the effort to take them to the next level, or at least get a few heads turning.

Sounds Like: A happy medium between Papa Roach and Velvet Revolver.

The Good:
- The album breezes by, as each track flows into the next perfectly. It's an easy and fun listen.
- Hamilton's influence is evident, but luckily he doesn't go for the completely lo-fi sound he gave the latest Helmet CD.
- The musicianship is something to marvel at, somewhat resembling old-school Guns N' Roses.

The Bad:
- The vocals leave a bit to be desired at times. Frontman Gene Louis could use a little more range.

Hits: "Bathroom Floor," "Cancer California" and "Going Blind."

Future: Who knows. I mean, these guys deserve to get noticed, but it seems like any band who tries out a retro sound and does it justice gets ignored in favor of the kind of alternative/indie garbage that's been clogging the music scene for five years strong.

Personally: I'd love for this album to take off. These are the kinds of songs you wouldn't mind hearing on the radio or on TV a million times. There's something here every rock fan can appreciate. Whether you grew up on Motley Crue or Blink 182, you'll dig Bullets And Octane.

Best Listened To When: You're breast-feeding.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is mine now.......2006-09-29

I first heard this band when they performed on the Family Values Tour (with KoRn and Stone sour). I was blown away. I went out the next day and bought this CD. I love it. It is a great piece of rock music that gets usual rotation on my Gigabeat (I'm listening to "I Aint Your Savior" right now actually). My top 5 tracks are:
1. Mine Now
2. I Aint Your Savior
3. Save Me Sorrow
4. Going Blind
5. Cancer California
But there are no bad tracks. If I could only suggest 1 CD this year, this would be it (but thankfully I can suggest as many as I want: "Come What(ever) May" - Stone Sour, "One-X" - Three Days Grace, "Phobia" - Breaking Benjamin)hahaha! Bye...

Imagine taking all those terrible bands like simple plan, good charlotte and avril lavigne and rolling them into one. Not a nice image well thats Gob for you. This band a) seems to have a serious lack of originality or creativity b) can barely get past power chords or poseur punk cliches c) are trying too hard to be sum 41. You only have to listen to 'Give Up the Grudge' it is practically a total rip off of sum 41's nothing on my back.

The only people this album will appeal to is a bunch of stupid 12 year old kiddies who think this makes the rebellious or something the rest of us true music fans are just left wondering how long can these wannabe's continue to spew out this cloned teeny pop rubbish?

4 out of 5 stars The evolution of gob..........2005-01-29

Thru out the years, I've been following the candian punk-pop foursome known as gob. This is what i've found; In 1995, they released a debut called "too late...no friends". It was your basic mid-90's punk album, with little to no melody, short songs, below average production, and poor song structure.

In 98', the band released a follow up called "how far shallow takes you". This time around, the songs were a bit longer and had slightly more melody, and the band's transformation from "punk" to "punk-pop" was already underway.

After about three years of being off the scene, gob returned once more in early 2001 with "the world according to gob", an album which owed more to Britney spears and the current Blink 182 than it did to early Green Day or the Ramones. The songs were overly poppy, the production was super slick, and the lyrics were varied and covered more topics than just potty humor and teen rebelion. It was A HUGE step in the right direction, with the boys producing an album as strong as "enema of the state" and "all killer no filler". In my opinion, it's their best record to date.

Unfortunatly tho, even with a pop sound and modern lyrical content, gob was still no where near being as big as Simple plan or blink, so one year after releasing "the world according", they decided to go on tour with fellow canadian punk brats Sum 41. The tour gave them the opportunity to impress Arista's Executive producer LA reid, so much in fact that he sent the boys of gob into the recording studio the following year to create...

"Foot in mouth disease". To be honest, its a bit MORE "punk" than "the world according to gob" , but not by much, and with producer Mark Trombino (blink 182, Diffuser, The Starting Line, Finch ect.) and labelmates Avril Lavine and Wakefield, the difference isn't easily noticed. It features 14 songs that run between 2-5 minutes on average, and are all really catchy and singable (the formula for "the world according to gob" was basically duplicated). If you're into melodic, catchy pop-punk, I'd recommend getting "the world according to gob" first and then "foot in mouth". DO NOT pick up "too late...no friends" or "How far shallow takes you" unless you actually prefer hardcore punk to pop-punk.

5 out of 5 stars i love this and i don't even like this kinda stuff.......2004-12-25

i'm usually into linkin park and lostprophets but this cd caught my eye. my uncle had left me borrow all of his cds and this was one of them. the only songs i had heard by Gob were the singles "for the moment" "i hear you calling" and "give up the grudge" so i was willing to give it a listen.

Lemon-aid - 10/10 - a good starting song. this song pretty much sums up how the rest of the cd will be.

I've Been Up These Steps - 10/10 - this song freakin rulz! just listen to the opening and you'll be hooked.

Oh! Ellin - 6/10 - i really don't like this song. it just seems so flat to me. god knows why they made it a single.

I Cut Myself, Too - 9/10 - this song is good to get back some momentum afetr suffering through Oh! Ellin.

Fed Up - 100/10 - THE greatest song ever. a little slower but it FREAKING RULES!!!!

Ming Tran - 10/10 - an awesome song. if you havent already seen the vid then you can just visualize what it would be like.

When Life Gets Boring... - 9/10 - really sweet guitar but the chorus coulda been better.

Give Up The Grudge - 10/10 - obviously you've seen the video for this song so theres no reason for me to talk about it.

Bones - 7/10 - i don't care for this song all that much. the chorus sucks.

This Evil World - 9/10 - good verses and guitar.

I Hear You Calling - 7/10 - this song wasn't on the cd my uncle had... meh. i don't really like it anyway.

Bully - 8/10 - this song actually has some screaming but they try to drown it in the music so you can't really hear it.

Cold Feet - 8/10 - meh it's okay i guess.

Everybody's Getting Hooked Up - 9/10 - SWEET GUITAR! bu that's about it.

DVD - 4/10 - now comon. if your gonna put a DVD with a cd at least have the intension of putting behind the scenes footage on it. i don't give a flying crap about their old videos. and who wants to listen to old song on a DVD player!?

5 out of 5 stars I dont know..sounds awesome to me........2004-02-23

Im new to GOB and I love this CD. I dont know what people are complaining about. I plan on buying some of their older stuff. Maybe its just the fact that Im a fan of many genres of music. Just like every CD it has certain songs that you like better than others for whatever reason. But just look what everyone is saying about these guys. Everyone seems to like different songs the best. One person will say this or that that songs sucks while someone else will sya those same songs are their favorites. The fact is that no song on here is bad. For me every song is enjoyable but ofcourse I have favorites like everyone else. Just because its not your favorite doesnt mean it sucks.
If youre the kind of person that buys CDs for one song and doesnt have time to give the entire album a chance then skip this. If you look at songs like individual pieces of art I think you will really enjoy this album. They have really good lyrics and are really catchy. You can hear alot of different sounds in their music if youd just listen with an open mind. I STRONGLY suggest buying this CD if you are fans of Sum 41, Blink 182, Unwritten Law, Millencolin and Simple Plan.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone outside of Ireland..........2006-11-28

These guys are huge in Ireland and will probably never make it anywhere else. But this album is a gem. I have listened to it at least 20 times and I still love it. Whatever happens to this band, they can look back at this diamond in a sea of coal and say it was all worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Music In Mouth.......2006-04-02

Music In Mouth' is the new album from Dublin-based quartet Bell X1. The band are Paul Noonan, Brian Crosby, David Geraghty and Dominic Phillips, who have made music together in many guises since the early 90s. The album was recorded over the course of 2002 in a series of locations from Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey and The Fallout Shelter in London, to various houses in Dublin, Kilkenny and London. 'Music In Mouth' was recorded by Jamie Cullum (Tom McRae, Perry Blake). Notable guests on the record include Olli Kraus (Beth Orton) on cello and Margaret White (Sparklehorse) on vocals and violin.

While they're not overly keen to blow their own collective trumpet it is certainly true that repeated playing of `Music In Mouth' reveals its depths. Whether that's in the ingenious central idea of opening track 'Snakes And Snakes' (there are no ladders), or the equally satisfying picture that I'll see 'Your Heart' and 'Raise You Mine' conjures; whether it's the way the banjo sounds like an eastern instrument in 'Alphabet Soup', the simple elegiac qualities and atmosphere of 'Bound For Boston Hill', or the neo-folk jug band eroticism and exuberance in 'West Of Her Spine', these are songs that stick around and make their presence welcome. Put simply, 'Music In Mouth' should show the world that Bell X1 are a band that have something for everyone. Includes the single 'White Water Song'.

'And so the Irish invasion picks up pace, as Kildare's Bell X1 spring from the traps. More robust than the Thrills, closer to the finished article than the Basement, Bell X1 have been four years honing their sound. This is rock with gusto and drive and confidence and intent, Radiohead as Radiohead should sound now. It puts down a brave marker' - NME

5 out of 5 stars magical!.......2006-02-23

well, i discovered this album through a friend. i had never even heard of the band and i just went out and bought the thing on blind faith because i trust my friends taste. lucky for me!! this has to be one of the most beautiful, lyrically interesting and underrated albums that i have ever heard!
the first time that you listen to it it's good, but keep listening and it just grabs your heart. every time i put it into my cd player (and that's nearly every day) i find something new to love about this.
it's not just that their lyrics are clever and so true to the point - in ireland in particular, the idiosyncracies of the way that irish people think is beautifully pointed out in this - but the music washes through you and over you.
these are an amazingly talented band, with a beautiful turn of phrase and an ability to hit you in the guts with their guitars!!

and by the way, the third album, flock, is another amazing piece of work. they are just getting better and better!!

rise up all people and buy everything by this band!! it won't disappoint!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-05-25

This is a strange sort of album. On first listen, I certainly wasn't unimpressed, but I can't say that it lived up to the enthusiastic recommendations that it gained from a few of my friends. On a further few listens, however, it grew on me. And it kept on growing. It is truly a superb album. Any newcomer to Bell X1 is likely to have been introduced to them through their minor hit, "Eve, the Apple of My Eye". So you will surely already be aware of the potential of the band (It's worth noting that the album version of that song is quite noticeably better than the single version). And I can promise you that "Music in Mouth" more than lives up to the promise of that song.

In a similar style to "Eve", the songs "I'll See Your Heart and I'll Raise You Mine" and "In Every Sunflower" bring a depth of emotion to the album that is rare amongst their contemporaries - particularly bands, as opposed to singer-songwriters. It's a difficult thing to pinpoint, but if anyone has seen Bell X1 live, it's pretty clear. The songs are genuine. They are tender, personal and vulnerable, but at the same time powerful. It's refreshing to see this, let's face it, exhausted commercial formula applied naturally (or, in another word, correctly) - for once.

But it's not just an album of soft ballads. In "Alphabet Soup" and "Snakes and Snakes", the band display a quirkyness, an intelligence, a personality and undeniably an ability to write catchy, upbeat - verging on rock n' roll - songs. True, there is the occasional track that doesn't quite meet the standards of the rest ("Daybreak", for example, seems a bit tame sandwiched between "Snakes" and "Eve"), but that takes little away from the album as a whole. Listen to each song on its own. Listen to the album as a whole. But most importantly, listen to it again. And again. It grew on me. It's still growing on me. Personally, I think it's the best album from anywhere in years. I don't know how it hasn't made a bigger splash, but don't let that put you off. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Promising music.......2005-05-20

I was listening to a sountrack of a TV show when the song "Eve, The Apple of my Eye" came on and I feel in love with it immediately. I was so impressed I looked for their album and it's definately worth it - another good band from Ireland. The music ranges from ballads to rock, the best tracks being "Eve, the apple of my eye", "Tongue" and "Alphabet Soup".

The only reason anyone should pay attention to this is if you want to hear Sully Erna (Godsmack Vocalist) on the drums. He does a really good job, but all of these songs are immature as hell. Just look at the titles to tracks 4-7, particularly 5 and 6. That immediately gives you the idea. The music is good, but good is all that can be said about. I can understand why they broke up; they didn't seem to be going anywhere. Technically the songs are all played very well, but at the end, I'm left with an "Ok, what can I listen to next?" kind of feeling. I'm left with an unsatisfied feeling, especially when I kind of hear the same song twice. They had an album previously under the band name Seka, and then they got Sully for this album and a new name. Well, only check this out if you are a Godsmack fan and want to hear Sully on the drums (he's the best thing on this record). Get it used or cheap, otherwise just download it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2005-05-20

this was the first ' signed ' band that sully recorded with.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Follow-up.......2003-12-23

There once was a band named "Seka" that realeased a rather decent album called "Love Shim" on Taang Records. They were subsequently sued by the former porn star Seka for using her name. For their next album they changed their name, drummer, and label and put out "What's in your Mouth" as "Strip Mind." "Love Shim" is a lot faster, catchier, and overall entertaining than "What's in...", check that out instead.

This CD is awsome. If you are a Green Day fan it is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars 10 stars!.......2006-03-26

i'd give this 10 stars, if i could! this was the 4th green day, well 'thing' i guess, that i bought(i acctaully found it at tower records for much cheeper then this), i'd had had AI, insomniac, and bullet in a bible before hand. it has awesome awesome awesome preformances, for ALL the songs on it, some which i greatly prefer over the studio recs. its a really wonderful line up aswell, except that at the end of FOD, billie does the 'hey-oh' thing into the crowd he does at alot of concerts, so not a terrific way to end, it makes you want more. but, really, even though it is an EP, it is still by far my favorite CD of all that i own. truely superb.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Ablum.......2005-08-20

I own two Green Day live ablums, "Bowling Bowling Bowling Parking Parking" and "Foot in Mouth" and this is by far the better one. It has most of Green Days earlier hits from their first ablum all the way up to Insominac. The song list is:
Going to Pasalaqua 5/5- this one was from their first ablum, catchy with a new Bass riff.
Welcome to Paradise5/5- the first single off Dookie, even more energetic live.
Geek Stink Breath 4/5- first single off Insomniac, has a catchy palm muted guitar riff, not much changed from the Ablum version
One of My Lies 5/5- A great song from Kerplunk, I don't have Kerplunk yet so I don't if there are any differences.
Stuck With Me 5/5- One of the best songs from Insomniac, Billie says its new but thats because he's not in America when he played it live.
Chump 4/5-This song is okay but I added an extra point because of the crazy ending guitar riff and because tihs song means Longview Follows.
Longview5/5- This proably the best Dookie single, it has one of the best Bass riffs in punk rock. Live its more energetic and the crowd reaction is great, but theres a part in the chourus where Billie stops singing anf you can barley hear the crowd singing over the loud Guitar and Bass.
2,000 Light Years Away5/5- This is Green Day's best Kerplunk song and Live it's even better.
When I Come Around 5/5- Another well know Dookie single, live its played faster and I like the guitar solo better without a rhythim guitar played in the backround.
Burnout 4/5- A little out of place as the second to last song since this is the first song on Dookie, its still good.
F.O.D. 4/5- A great way to end a great live ablum.

        Album Description

Handel's oratorios vary greatly in their presentation. In many ways, Esther is a rarity;it is by far the most intimate, not surprisingly as it was composed for the Duke of Chandos. The Duke's Palladian palace near the village ofEdgware had not been completed in time for the first performance so this may have taken place (as did Acis and Galatea) in the intimate surroundings of a small church, St Lawrence, Whitchurch.

We decided, therefore, that we should attempt to convey that intimacy of performance on disc; so we performed in the round with microphones in the middle, the orchestra in front of me, the choir behind and the soloists alongside. The result is everything that chamber music should be where players and singers can enjoy every aspect of Handel's masterpiece.

"The 'sound' of Esther, superbly communicated in the recorded performance here, is pure enchantment... The choral singing has an exceptional grandure, and the instrumental playing a shimmering beauty. Among the soloists, none of whom is less than accomplished, Nancy Argenta and Michael Chance dominate... Both singers affirm a new golden age of Handel interpretation".

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME.......2007-01-26

Esther is the first of Handel's oratorios by a good many years, written when he was 33 and enjoying the patronage of the Duke of Chandos. When he later became his own impresario and was running into trouble as a composer and producer of Italian operas he turned to oratorio as a strategic alternative, but at this early date his concern was to deliver staged entertainments for the Duke, and Esther, contemporary with the work that later gained the title Acis and Galatea, seems to have been just an unusually serious specimen of its type.

As often with Handel, there is no fully official version of the score, and this particular score may not even be fully complete from any point of view. The libretto seems to have been the work of someone in the frivolously named association of big literary figures called the Scriblerus Club, perhaps Dr John Arbuthnot, dedicatee of Pope's great poetic Epistle, but Pope himself may have had a hand in it too. As we have it here, the work breaks into two very asymmetrical parts. Scenes 1 and 2 start with a recitative lasting only seconds from Habdonah followed by a longer one in which Haman announces his onslaught on the Israelites, and from there on feature only anonymous participants. Esther herself and the other named characters make their appearance first in scene 4, but the change of tone occurs in scene 3. At this point the music gains gravity first in the chorus Ye sons of Israel with its extraordinary modulations and then in the striking aria O Jordan, Jordan. I myself feel that this weightier tone is maintained to the end, whether or not the writer of the liner note is correct in saying that the long final chorus with solos is out of proportion to its context.

Throughout - in the first part as well as in scenes 3-6 - the instrumental writing is vivid and varied, with an extraordinary pizzicato accompaniment to Tune your harps and then an even more extraordinary obbligato from the harp itself at Praise the Lord. The harpist is no less than Jan Walters, but sometime I would like to see the score and check out what seem some odd rhythmic interactions here between her and the soloist Nancy Argenta. There are no fewer than ten vocal soloists in a work lasting a little over an hour and a quarter, and a very distinguished bunch they are. I was particularly pleased to find Michael Chance in the countertenor role of the Priest of the Israelites as I admire the strength of his tone, but there is no real weakness among them, unless Lynda Russell as Esther has a couple of very slightly awkward high notes in Flatt'ring tongue, which must be a little nerve-wracking to sing as she has to find her note for herself unaccompanied at the start and later at the reprise. You will see some big names among the instrumentalists too, with Crispian Steele-Perkins on the trumpet making a predictably fine contribution towards the end, and of course with Jan Walters in that marvellous harp part early on. The chorus gets some wonderful work to do, and rises to it fully. I really am unable to worry about the proportionateness of the final chorus when I hear that incomparable Handelian build of tone, sung by 18 singers and sounding as if there were 100.

There is a good liner note by Graydon Beeks Jr, not perhaps the last word in lucidity (neither is the plot of the libretto come to that) but worth re-reading. Harry Christophers himself contributes a short foreword largely concerned with the recording process and highlighting the contributions of Mark Brown and Mike Hatch, his long-time technical collaborators. I was interested to see also the name of Geoff Miles in a role described as `editor'. What responsibilities this involved is not stated and perhaps I ought to know without being told, but I know the work of Geoff Miles as recording engineer from elsewhere and it gave me confidence just to see that he is involved in the proceedings, and the technical work is predictably excellent.

My collection of Handel oratorios is now almost complete, and what a wonderful musical experience they are. Each is unique in its own way, but Esther is unique in some very special ways, and I suggest that you do not wait until you are my age to get to know it.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-04-04

Handel began composing the oratorio 'Esther' in 1718. There is some confusion as to who actually worte the libretto for it, but the story follows very closely the biblical story of Esther in the Book of Esther in the old testament. The story tells of a plot of Haman, the Agagite (Michael George-bass) jealous and powerful vizier of King Xerses (Ahasuerus-Tom Randle-tenor) of Persia(485-464), to destroy in a single day all the Jews living in the Roman Empire. He is moved to this out of hatred for the Jewish servant Mordecai (Mark Padmore-tenor),who for religious motives refuses to render him homage. The day of the proposed massacre is determined by lot. Meanwhile, Esther, niece and adopted daughter of Mordecai, is chosen Queen by King Xerses. She averts the pogrom planned against her people and has the royal decree of extermination reversed against Haman and the enemies of the Jews. Mordecai replaces Haman, and together with Esther, works for the welfare of their people. As you can see this makes for an interesting Oratorio, which it truly is!
This is a "small" contribution compared to many of Handel's other works. However, it is not "small" in a musical sense. There is much creativity on the part of Handel as to orchestral scoring; he exploits his small orchestra and chorus in surprising ways, introducing new vocal and instrumental colours throughout the score, adding and subtracting instruments and voices in many and varied ways. This is a listening surprise as it moves along. And what a great performance on the part of the Christophers as well as some outstanding vocal soloists. Mark Padmore's (Mordecai) aria "Tune Your Harps to Cheerful Strains" was superb as was the Duet between Lynda Russell (Esther) and Tom Randle (Ahasuerus). But the aria that really drew me into the entire drama was sung by Michael Chance (Priest) "O Jordan, Jordan, sacred Tide." It was perfection itself!!!!The Chorus was extremely good and dictionally perfect. It is a great listening experience.
