Good for collectors.......2007-07-08

This is not Howard Shore and no-one should think it is, however I found it a nice addition to my LOTR music collection. I have all the Shore music and it is outstanding - this is interesting, nowhere near as good, but very nice nonetheless. I especially like the soprano Charlotte Kinder on this CD and I would recommend it just for her contribution in some ways I prefer her to Renee Fleming, but that is of course a subjective statement. The other female singer is ok, but nothing special compared to the originals.

I had real high hopes for the soundtrack cause the movies ROCKED!!! This was a disappointment cause the vocal version of "Into the West" "sucked" cause the lady sounded like she lost her voice an faded in an out. They should have gotten Enya to do the vocals or AT LEAST the Into the West cause the ldy that sung it made the volume "suck" when I thought it would have a BIG finish but instead it had a BIG disappiontment!!!

Just be sure to read up on this closely... it's not the orchestra you hear in the movie, and you may be especially disappointed when you hear the vocal tracts - gone are great talents Enya and Annie Lennox, replaced by no-name voices. This is not BAD music, but don't think you're a genius for capturing the music of the movies on one inexpensive 2-CD set.

Worth It.......2006-03-30

Howard Shore's scores to the three Lord of the Rings movies are a classical masterpiece in their own right, and as such I don't mind hearing them played by a different orchestra. While I prefer the originals on the whole, this set has some very nice things to recommend it. The best part is that you get instrumental renditions of the end credits song from each film. My favorite is "Into the West," from The Return of the King, with a cello replacing Annie Lennox's vocal performance. I really disliked Lennox's ugly, popified performance of the song, but I thought that the melody and orchestration were gorgeous, so I could not be more delighted to hear the song performed by a cello, with all original orchestration intact. That one track is worth $20 to me.

This Collection Captures the Lord of the Rings Aura.......2006-01-27

From the song titled "Concerning the Hobbits" which is lighthearted and cheerful, to "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" with it's intense shadowy drums and chants this collection of The Lord of the Rings trilogy's music ensues the essence of all three movies. My favorites are included along with some new added bonus favorites now. "May It Be," "Into the West," and "The Riders of Rohan." The vocals are absolutely beautiful in some of the songs with soothing women's voices that just glide along as if riding the wind of white cottony cloud. The only down side to the CD's that I found dissapointing was that the last three songs, not being sung by the original artists, don't quite rest as well with the soul as the original's, yet are still very beautifully executed. I have listened to them over and over again even as they are different artists. I highly recomend this soundtrack compelation to anyone who enjoy's the Lord of The Rings Movie's Music.

Beware! This is NOT the official soundtrack!.......2006-07-12

I played my official soundtrack CDs to death so I was looking for a replacement. This is not the real thing. A lot of the tracks aren't even on these, and the order on the rest of them is all mixed up. Bad quality sound, without the energy and passion of the original -- sounds like elevator music. There are even misspellings throughout the playlists. It is not readily obvious to the buyer that it isn't what you think it is, until it arrives.

The Fellowship volume won't play on one of my hard drives at all; it plays, but fuzzily, on my laptop. I gave up before trying it in the CD player in my vehicle.

Not the original music.......2005-07-13

I was expecting this to be the music from the movies - it isn't. It is nicely done, but if you're expecting the same style and sound as from the movies, look elsewhere (this sounds more MIDI than orchestra).

Jobim Alone.......2006-12-16

This is a solo piano gig just Jobim playing and singing unaccompanied.
The piano and recording are excellent. It sounds to me like a hall of about 2000 people. It's all in Porteguese. All the tunes are one time through and about 2 and half minutes long.It's a great look into the mind of a genius.

One of Milton Nascimento's beautiful albums from the Seventies originally released in 1976. The album opens with the wonderful "Minas," a tribute to all sacred music traditions in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, Nascimento's home, which was deeply influential in his musical sensibility. The album launched songs that became strong emotional hits: "Fe Cega, Faca Amolada," "Beijo Partido," the nostalgic "Saudades Dos Avioes da Panair," "Ponta de Areia," and "Paula E Bebeto." Gets better with on repeat listens.......2007-07-06

At first my reaction to this album was mediocre at best. I thought there was some good stuff but the chorus singing that opens up the album was re-sampled to death and the style changes were a little overwrought as well, possibly to cover-up some inadequacies of the musicians. About the third time I listened to it I began to think about certain tensions being played out between the music and that vocal sample. It's overuse was just so blatant and so jarring at times, despite how good it is. I slowly began to put together an idea of what I thought was going on, and by now, I am almost at the point of thinking that it's a concept album. The music competes with and meditates on the simple purity of just a few girls singing "Na Na Na"s, and questions whether there is anything that can compare to that minimal, understated beauty. It's almost an existential struggle, Milton sacrificing himself at the altar of the sample's perfection, throwing himself up against it again and again in any and every way he can think of. The music played and sung by the band is the boat or the sea who's waves crash up against the unshakable rocks where the sirens make their home. (Okay, I realize that maybe I'm reading a little too much into this.) It's quite epic if you give it the chance to be. Through the course of the album Milton Nascimento and his band work their way through a variety of styles and end in a compromise. In the end Milton makes some capitulations and sings along with the sample, sort of bittersweet, but more sweetbitter if you ask me.

I didn't get to contain the emotion when I heard this CD. The songs are amazing, the excellent arrangements, Milton's voice is impressive. My favorite song is "Ponta de Areia", but all of the songs are equally beautiful. The version that I bought has a cover for "Norwegian Wood" of Beatles.

Minas Morgul - The Dead City.......2004-06-16

In the Lord of the Rings books, Minas Morgul was known as the Dead city, home of the Witch King of Agmna. Summoning has gone with more keyboards along with their traditional black metal and it sounds really evil. Silenius is a great musician all around and so is Protector (of all endless sleeps). Protector's vokills are much better (meaning worse) than Lugburz. The song Lugburz is absolutely great and why wasn't it on the Lugburz album? This was worth the $ and is a black/classical metal album.

Customer reviews are rather misleading in that everyone seems to throw the five star rating around without sincerity or thought. Minas Morgul is that rather dry album stuck in between two of Summoning's better albums: Lugburz and Dol Guldar, two of which are essential to a BM collection. While these two albums were a bit more lively and majestic, Minas is rather slow, repetitious, and uninspiring. While repetion is certainly not bad for creating ambience as Burzum, Darkthrone and Graveland have revealed, is is not all that engrossing when it is used soley to make long songs with weak themes. The flow of the album is inconsistent, built of agonizingly slow and underproduced tracks shoved in between squeeky clean instrumentals that don't really add anything to the album. The majority of these instrumentals amount to novelty and almost random compulsion (which would plague later Abigor albums). If you really like Summoning and you have the cash, I would pick this up, but for those who have never heard Summoning, I would listen to Lugburz (for that necro-BM sound) and Dol Goldar (for majestic keyboard soaked soundscapes).

What an incredible album. I mean this is what black metal is all about, pure hatred, sorrow, and suffering. Need I say more?

Summoning at their best.......2001-12-08

They could take the guitars off of this album and still retain the beauty and feeling conveyed here. This is one of the best albums I have had the pleasure to hear. This is not black metal, this is ambient music in the style of Pazuzu with guitars. The concept and music of this band stand alone with no imitators. This is "black ambient medieval music" at its purest. Buy or forever be haunted by the knowledge that you missed out on the eargasm of a lifetime.

Summoning's best.......2001-06-03

I fell in love with this album the first sight :) Beautiful melodies, great keyboards, scary voices and majestic emotion. It takes you back to those dark medieval times when dragons were in the sky, bards and heroes roamed the land, elves hunted in the woods, dwarves carved deep caves in the ancient hills and trolls patrolled the mountain passes, when elder gods walked the earth, when moonlight was young and magic was strong, and sword was the highest judge...

Masterpiece.
