For this follow-up to her 2001 debut, (Salt Rain, which won a BBC Radio 3 World Music Award and was certified Gold in France), Raman continues to build on her tried-and-true formula. Born in Britain to South Indian parents, her Tamil birthright did not preclude an attraction to Western pop and she explores this duality throughout the album. The title tune is a back-room, jazzy rendering of an urban Ethiopian hit--it and a sexy cover of Joan Armatrading's "Save Me" are the only English-language tracks. The other nine offer a far-flung mélange of languages, constituting a dream journey during which the chanteuse's silky, flexible alto encounters trip-hop, Tuvan throat singing, sinuous Indian classical ornamentation, and assorted African influences. As modern electronica flickers amid age-old acoustic instruments with unexpectedly felicitous results, it becomes clear that Raman has achieved a study in contrasts that is also a primer for inclusion. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-02-23

Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10

Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2006-10-31

Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.

4 out of 5 stars those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05

This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Stacy Kent has a voice like the great Dinah Washington's, immediate in its grab of the ear and incisive in its tonal shape. Kent's middle range has a washing quality that pushes the edges forward, even as the edges lilt upward or warble excitedly. Kent and her British band--virtual unknowns prior to this debut--are sure to splash big, with their spare ballad approach (as on Duke Ellington and Bob Russell's "I Didn't Know About You") or their rumbling swing on George Gershwin's "They All Laughed." Pianist David Newton glides across melodies with a light touch but then launches sparkling solos full of funky harmonics--hear "The Tender Trap" for Kent and Newton's mix of charming voice and odd pianism. The band is creative enough to feel at ease reaching into great instrumental passages, giving Kent a first-class platform from which to cue up phrasing that nods to Ella Fitzgerald and a unique, fetching overall style all her own. --Andrew Bartlett

I think Stacy has a wonderful voice. Glad I purchased this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An affectionate voice........2005-04-23

Stacey Kent's voice is unique and distinguishable amongst her contemporaries because it is thin but strong, sexy but sincere and she makes you notice and remember it. "Love is a Tender Trap" illustrates all these wonderful traits. The first six tracts are justly sung with the complimentary backing from tenor saxophonist Jim Tomlinson and company to put you in the mood. The band knows exactly when to add a little bit of piano, a mute scratching of the drums and a bellow of the bass. You can hear this in "I Didn't Know About You." There are also some swing numbers like "Comes Love" and the title track. Either way, Kent's phrasing and interpretation is special and memorable. She is Eartha Kitt and then some.

1 out of 5 stars A not-so-tender trap.......2004-12-25

Despite Amazon's listing showing "Audio CD January 28, 2003", this product was recorded in early 1998 when, in my opinion, Stacey Kent had developed minimal skills as a professional recording artist. I purchased it based on my delight with later CDs like Dreamsville and In Love Again. But I listened to it once and threw it away. The problems were a combination of immature phrasing, off-pitch notes at times, the wrong song choices for her talents and, probably, some poor audio mixing. I love Stacey's later and current work but this one's a bummer.

5 out of 5 stars Just one of Stacey's list of 5-star releases.......2004-09-16

She knows the music, doesn't try to recreate it, but rather dignifies it with her pure clear tones and impeccable timing.

My personal favorite is "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning".

5 out of 5 stars Second album from American-born British-based jazz star.......2004-05-09

Stacey is now getting long-overdue recognition in the land of her birth thanks to her 2004 album, The boy next door, but she has been a major name in British jazz circles for a few years now. This is one of the albums that show why. I am amazed to read reviews criticizing Stacey's voice but we are all entitled to our opinions. I think she has a wonderful voice. Any minor technical limitations are more than compensated for in other ways. She likes to put her own distinctive interpretations on each song, so she can adapt the song to suit her voice. Classic songs from the Great American Songbook are Stacey's speciality. This is a very competitive market but Stacey has proved well capable of taking on the competition.

On this album, you can hear Stacey's versions of such classics as the title track (Frank Sinatra), I didn't know about you (Duke Ellington), Comes love (Artie Shaw with Helen Forrest singing), In the still of the night (Tommy Dorsey), Fools rush in (Glenn Miller), East of the sun (Tom Coakley), Zing went the strings of my heart (Judy Garland), They say it's wonderful (Frank Sinatra), Don't be that way (Benny Goodman), They all laughed (Fred Astaire), In the wee small hours of the morning (Frank Sinatra) and It's a wonderful world (Charlie Barnet). If one or two of the original hit-makers seem unfamiliar, a look at the composer credits will reassure you. Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn, George and Ira Gershwin - they're all there.

Stacey is, as ever, backed by some of the finest jazz musicians in Britain (and she's married to one of them). Her music may have less crossover appeal than Diana Krall and Norah Jones but it's possible to enjoy the music of all three in their different ways.

4 out of 5 stars Took me back.......2007-01-06

I remember eagerly staying awake for the premier of this series when I was nine and being glued to the screen. This CD awoke lots of memories, all of them good. It's got me humming the old tunes all over again.

The CD took a small hit in my view as I actually prefer the original version of the opening them to the slightly different arrangement found here, but the rest of the tracks are more than fine. If you at all like the original version of Galactica, I think you would find it hard to go wrong with this.

3 out of 5 stars Great Score, But Bad Remaster.......2005-09-02

I would give 5 stars for excellent music, but have to give only 3 stars for a terrible remaster. It sounds like someone turned the Treble all the way up and turned the Bass down to zero! It has a very thin, metalic sound to it. Also, the reverb is way over done, as the other reviewers have mentioned. It's to the point where things are so blended together that you can't distinguish the individual instruments. My original vinyl record is better sound quality then this (if you overlook the clicks or pops). I would recommend the June 29, 1999 re-recording with Stu and the Royal Orchestra over this one. On the re-recording the horns blast through loud and clear and the bass blows you out of your seat. You can hear every instrument very clearly as if you are sitting right in front of the orchestra. The music is fantastic and I think the Battlestar Galactica theme is one of the best ever written. Also, the Exploration theme and Base Star (Imperious Leader) theme are amazing.

4 out of 5 stars At last...........2005-06-10

It's strange-- just a few days ago, I was rifing through some old stuff from my childhood (old toys, a pile of very old Starlog Magazines)and noticed an ad in a Starlog for this in its old LP format, back when the show was actually on-air. I remember being a little kid and wishing I could send in for it.

Well, fast forward to yesterday, and I'm rifing through various cd soundtracks in my local cd/dvd wherehouse/bonanza/free-for-all store, and there it was. And by God, it was in cd format! And yes, it was ORIGINAL! Not re-performed by some Scottish Orchestra a couple of years ago! Immediately, it was in my greedy hands, helplessly going along with me to my home.

First off, this cd has liner notes. It's not just flimsy repros of the front and back of the old LP. Glen Larson, Stu Phillips, and Richard Hatch all pitch in with recollections about the show, with Phillips's being the most memorable (John Williams coming by to listen to the theme to see if any Star Wars was in there, in case Lucasfilm wanted to sue).

The sound quality is great, no hiss or tininess. The only gripe I have is that the strings sound a little too "smooth." Don't know if that makes sense, but they sound a little too reverbed, concert-hallish. But hey, if that's all I can come up with to complain, then this is a winner!

Relive the memories, in a format that you can play again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Twenty-six years on, it still stirs the blood!.......2004-11-22

Some people may think of Battlestar Galactica as a hokey show that sums up the era of disco, I don't happen to be one of them however!

One thing most people can agree on whether they be a fan or not, is that the theme to Battlestar Galactica is one of the most memorable of TV themes!

Here you get the pieces that went with the first episode that was broadcast - Saga of a Star World, but many of the themes pop up again further along in the series.

The score is a big score for TV, played by the LA Philharmonic no less, and in my humble opinion, composer Stu Phillips's finest work.

5 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack.......2004-08-10

If I was asked who has the best soundtrack,Galactica or Star Wars,it would be a tie.I especially like the track Red Nova on the Galactica soundtrack.I listen to samples of the new Galactica soundtrack and so far so good. There is a question being asked about the rivalry between the two sci-fi epics of Galactica and Star Wars. When it comes to the music, both are good. Now if George Lucas could come up with better material of what he used in the Phantom Menance and Attack of the Clones and The space battles between the Colinial Empire and the Cylons increases in the future episodes.

With the album's opening words, "He's always giving you free advice / Of ways you can avoid telling him no" (from "Are You the Trash"), Mark Eitzel sets the tone for all that follows. This is Eitzel's music at its best, stripped down to its essential sadness, dominated by the echoing of his acoustic guitar and bourbon-soaked vocals. Even the beautiful accompaniments--from Kid Congo Powers, Yo La Tengo's James McNew, and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelly--that grace 5 of the album's 11 tracks are beautifully, if not painstakingly, understated. Possibly no other living songwriter can mix passion and resignation so powerfully without even a hint of self pity. This is poetry from the corner of the bar--from the man sitting alone watching everyone else's misery--all told with grace, humility and a touch of black humor. --Bill Snyder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars i just wanted to fill your soul with light..........2003-01-22

the emotional intensity and honesty of the record is astounding. it's like reading an open journal. mark eitzel holds no emotion back. "go away" is jaw dropping. the electric guitars are very atypical mark eitzel. almost noise, ala slowdive or MBV. but the lyrics are the most impressive part of the song: "all i've got is the last look you wore upon your face, and even if i live to be 1,000, that's one thing i'll never replace." possibly about the loss of his great love, to a herion overdose. "cold light of day" is also quite raw, but in a beautiful way. for the most part, the album is just mark and his acoustic guitar, which lends this intense emotional fragility that goes amazingly well with his equally fragile voice. the last two songs, despite their simplicity, just really get to my heart. every song is better than anything that was ever on the radio. honestly. at any rate, GET THIS ALBUM! give it time, though, but you will be impressed. he is the greatest songwriter, living or dead.

5 out of 5 stars Another Eitzel Masterpiece.......2002-11-16

If you love sparse, lo-fi, acoustic, sadcore music along the vein of Smog, Cindy Dall, Ida, Idaho, Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek, Dakota Suite, etc. then this is the CD for you. If you've never heard of any of these artists, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
Anyways, this album has a very distinct sound. Each song was recorded in such a way that you feel like you can hear the room ambience (or whatever you'd like to call it) around Mark as he performs. You feel like he's in your living room performing for you. Very haunting.
Solo acoustic tracks open the CD, and they're very good; raw and free of any effects or superfluous filler instruments. "Auctioneer's Song" and "White Rosary" are definite solo highlights.
Track 5 marks the beginning of the full band songs. The minimalist drums, bass, and electric guitar provide a bit of a change-up to the CD and variety to Eitzel's guitar and deep, droning, baritone voice. Highlights here include "If I Had A Gun", "Goodbye", and "Go Away".
The majority of the lyrics on this CD are very despairing and will be loved by any depressive sadcore fans. "If I Had A Gun" is a perfect example of this (as if you couldn't tell from the title). The last two lines of the song: "If I had a gun/I'd give you you're freedom". Enough said.
Buy it! I'm sure Mark would appreciate the support. Also, make sure to check out all of the American Music Club CDs. (AMC is Mark's former band who just happened to be the best sadcore band of all time!)

5 out of 5 stars I'm still pondering the title.......2001-05-13

This album is an amazing collection of beautiful, poetic, well crafted songs. If you're familiar with Eitzel and his former band, American Music Club, I don't think you will be disappointed with these songs. If you've not heard any Eitzel or AMC, then you definitely should and this album is just as good as anything else he's done. For those that might find comparisons to other artists helpful, I'd say that if you like the Sundays, David Sylvian, Jeff Buckley, Billy Brag & Wilco, or Son Volt then you'd probably like Eitzel or AMC as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is a review about this CD by someone you don't know........2000-06-18

Some key dates in U.S. history: 1776-Wealthy American colonists declare independence from England. 1861-1865-The American Civil War. 1995-Singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel disbands seminal sadcore band, American Music Club. While most struggle to spot England on a map, and the Civil War lingers only in isolated pockets of the Deep South, the repercussions of A.M.C.'s demise continue to daily bombard the collective psyche of the nation.

Fortunately for the faithful, on Caught In A Trap... Eitzel delivers his finest work since A.M.C.'s epochal Everclear. Joined by former Bad Seed guitarist, Kid Congo Powers, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Eitzel nixes the piano lounge atmospherics of prior release 60Watt SilverLining in favor of a much sparer sound, making his way through much of the album accompanied only by his own inventive acoustic strummings. Eitzel's vocals have never been stronger or more emotive.

Given the green light by Warner Brothers to record this side project on the condition that it have little commercial appeal, Eitzel was freed from the pressure which has always plagued his career: the pressure to create pop hits. While the tracks `Queen of No One' and `Cold Light Of Day' are pure pop genius, they typify what always kept A.M.C.'s music from widespread acceptance- they're simply too damned smart. Happily, on this Matador release, Eitzel was given license to freely expose his genius.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes it's all you want.......1999-02-27

Eitzel runs the gamut from urban folk (Xmas Lights Spin) to this-is-a-single (Cold Light of Day) to actually whimsical (Sun Smog Seahorse), which is his usual gamut, but a fine one nonetheless. The recording of this album is sometimes intimate; it sounds like he's in the room with you on the acoustic solo numbers. The five songs with band accompaniment left me wishing there were more, but on quiet afternoons I'm glad that he left things as they are. As usual, I'm waiting for more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Else Like It.......2005-10-24

This is really a fabulous album, and has become a real unexpected favorite in my collection. While the title track is catchy and quirky, the real meat of the album lies within. I especially love "Bliss" and "Dhamavati." This music is fusion in the best sense - a blend of worldwide musical influence and truly contemporary approach to border-crossing art. I HIGHLY recommend this album to the aesthetically curious.

2 out of 5 stars Airy and weak pop music.......2004-01-09

Raman's "Love Trap" intrigued me, for its promise of intercultural sound weavings. But when it arrived, I discovered its mediocrity. It's just cheap music, reminiscent of the worst of 1970s pop music: light, weak, and empty. Right from the first track, "Love Trap," you know you're in for a frivilous album, with trite background vocals "Love Trap, Love Trap, oooh, Love Trap, Love Trap, ooooh," and tin-plated lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Her sensual world.......2004-01-05

If world music is all about bringing people from different nations close and making them understand the beautiful side of each others music culture then it's no coincidence that Susheela Raman is one of it's stand out artists right now . The Anglo-Indian gifted lady mixes creatively various elements of the Indian , Tamil and wider western and eastern music tradition and manages to deliver an exotic , dazzling offering . First cd single " Love Trap " with it's poisonous charms can seduce a priest while " Sarasa " is as tender and sensual as a melody could ever be . What's most suprising though about Raman is that despite her young age she delivers such rich perfomances on songs like the slow and hypnotic " Amba " . Clearly she's here to stay and has all the wit and talent in order to do so .

5 out of 5 stars Susheela is excellent.......2003-12-27

I found this CD a most amazing walk into the far-away-lands I never knew existed. I especially like the Title song. It blends interesting rhythms and beautiful voice inflections. I stronly recommend this CD. I enjoy it the more I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Voice.......2003-09-21

I saw Susheela in concert and she has an absolutely phenomenal voice live. A very real voice, she was not caught up in anything but the music. The CD doesn't do justice to her voice, but it is an amazing compilation of her songs. If you read the translation of her songs, it makes the song even more beautiful. A great mix of South Indian Classical music with jazz, a good world beat CD.

5 out of 5 stars Homesick.......2004-03-06

Perfect

I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)

If You're a Fan of How They Used to Make 'em, Guess What? They're Still Making Em Like They Used To...and Just as Good!

4 out of 5 stars Great Voice.......2007-02-27
